Nokia 8210 4G $79 + Delivery ($0 with eBay Plus or C&C) @ Bing Lee eBay or In-Store

1850

Kicking around and needing a phone for a badly behaved child (so knocking them back to to the "punishment" phone) and stumbled across the Nokia 8210 4G for pretty cheap. (I know it's not really a Nokia and there are cheaper "smart phones" out there, but I wanted something painful to use.)

Sale is apparently for 7 days?? (But I dont know when it technically stated??)

Blue (10 available at time of posting) SOLD OUT
Sand (4 available at time of posting) SOLD OUT
Red, for some reason isnt on special. Still shows @ $97… (Maybe that is the special price??)

Also available on the Bing Lee website for Click and Collect
Blue SOLD OUT
Sand SOLD OUT
Red (it is $97, down from $117)

I also had an eBay plus $5 code that bought the price down to $74… I am not sure if any of the other codes work… most of them seem to be "Over $100…." codes.

I hope my children learn their lesson after having to use this phone…

    That'll learn 'em.

I've got one of these as my emergency backup and also to punish myself if necessary.

    • +23

like…..by beating yourself with it? orr???

    • Opps, This is the phone. Not for bsdm or emergency.

      • +3

        What about a bsdm emergency?

    • +33

Giving a kid a gift worth $80 is now a punishment it seems.

      • ROFL. Yeah right. What the world had become. Tsk tsk.

        • Once i sold a rare lego for $500 and the bloke came pickup said this is for my son 10th birthday go figure.

            • +7

@Charity: Have you seen the prices of LEGO? It's more a hobby for adults these days.

            • @Charity: Hm, you might be missing the collectors market - there are many Lego kits sold over the years that are rare and fetch a pretty penny. I would imagine collectors don't tend to play with Lego either (although there is certainly a market targeted at adult users).

            • +1

@Charity: "nnneeerrrrr come inside and look at my LEGO deathstar and I'll give you $10 off, neeerrrr"

            • +1

@Charity: Lego sets are no different to a puzzle, I don't understand why people try to give adults shit about building with Lego

              • +2

                @kujaultima:

I don't understand why people try to give adults shit about building with Lego

They grew up to be bitter people.

      • If they've tasted the caviar of mobiles such as the latest Apple or Samsung phone and then gets this, then yes it's a downgrade.

        • +1

But surely it's not a "punishment". To me they shouldn't even be getting a phone (if serious about punishing bad behaviour)

          • +1

@Craze: Giving a kid a small pocket sized, almost unbreakable, easily replaced device, so they can get in touch if needed, and feel safe while out exploring the world - Great parenting!

Giving a kid a heavy arse gaming console made of glass, they will almost certainly break, while forcing them to carry the delicate thing everywhere they go. Never letting them think for themselves because they are constantly bombarded by the naivety and vanity of social media apps they can't get away from, for fear you will punish them for being uncontactable. All while having to learn to navigate complex digital ecosystems in their Samsung/Apple to buy/download the latest apps or be the laughing stock at school still using (insert Facebook alternative here) - Now that's punishment.

            Perspective. 😂

          • +1

@Craze: At some point kids will transition from no phone to having one, just a matter of when. But while they are young, I agree, no phone, no tablets, no laptops, or even tv and toys. Books are all they need.

  • +4

Nooooo. Not the naughty step phone.

Man, that style phone takes me back.

  • +1

Haha. Love it. Naughty children that drop/throw their phone can have one of these :)

  • +21

This is actually awesome, would buy for nostalgia alone. Man, I still remember in high school when the rich kids flexed with the 8810, it was the phone everyone wanted. Now I'm showing my age.

    • +10

      Nokia 3310/15 gang 4 lyfe!

      • +17

Hold on, let me google it.

Edit: The 3210 was my favourite! Remember when everyone lost their minds when the antenna went internal? Haha.

        • +1

I loved my 3210! Old school snake was the best.

        • +2

3210 was the first ever Nokia with interchangeable covers. I remember Chinatown was flooded with aftermarket covers lol

          • +4

            @xenoic: 5110 was

            • @Two50rr: Yeah you're right the 5110 was earlier. However, the 3210 did have some crazy options in Chinatown lol.

      • +11

        My phone history

        5110 > 3310 > 8250 > Sony w880 > xperia mini x10 > htc g1 > Samsung s1 > s4 > pixel 1/3/5

        • +12

thanks for letting us know :)

        • +1

          how are old you…..

        • 8250 - My first phone!!!!

      • +2

Nokia E71 for me. Full keyboard and wifi!
Pair that with a C64 emulator and I was in heaven.

      • +2

Still got a working 3310 in mint condition. Fun fact the SMS message tone spells out SMS in more code. Dot dot dot dash dash dot dot dot.

I've had it as the tone on my Samsung for years, and when it goes off in public you can spot the old 3310 owners. :)

    • +6

My high school - when the 8250 (I think) came out and it was the 8210 but WITH A BLUE SCREEN and it was the TITS and only rich kids had it.

Also when the 3330 came out to supersede the 3210, and it had an ANIMATED SCREENSAVER.

      Man, those were the days.

      • Yeah i had that one, snappable different colour cases.
Worth getting one again to play snake on.

      • +2

I think the 8810 was before the 8250 and it was metal and could slide down the keypad cover, was always too expensive!

        • +2

Yeah I had a 7110(E?), as featured in the matrix.. slide down cover with release button, wap, scroll wheel select button was cool at the time.

          • @G-rig: Haha epic! That would've been expensive af

            • @Kammi: Guess was on a plan back then.

      • Haha yep, the blue screen was revolutionary.

      • WITH A BLUE SCREEN

Meh ! My whole 3310 running rhythmic rainbows RGBOYIV all-round , on full transparent case front to back.

    • +1

      Oh man the 8810!

It was the Vertu of it's time!

  • That's a good idea. I'll have to implement it. But will definitely be a case of me implementing double standards :p

  • +14

Got a similar dumb phone for my kid and she won't even take it with her, says too embarrassing

  • Does this overheat like the iPhone?

  • +1

https://www.amazon.com.au/eboxer-1-Vintage-Standby-Bluetooth… - if only that wasn't 2G, perfect punishment phone

  • +14

If anyone is considering this as a way to transition to a dumbphone for social media detox etc. etc. whatever your reason is - consider the AGM M7 instead. It's still an android phone, but clunky enough that media apps barely work, but just functional enough for Spotify/Audible.

    • $240 though!

  • +6

Only need to charge it once week!

  • +1

Nice… burner phone when you need one on the run. When you're done you can just snap it in half and dispose of it.

    • +28

You don’t snap a Nokia phone, it snaps you

      • +4

        And then dispose of you

    • +1

Could also get the Nokia 110 for $67:

      https://www.binglee.com.au/products/110-4g-1-7-feature-phone…

      Only single SIM

    • Around 2003 i got an sms that pissed me off so bad i put my 3310 under the back tyre of my VK Commodore, got in and redlined it and dropped the clutch. The phone shot out the back and the damn thing delaminated a massive chunk of the tread about 2-3 times the size of the phone down to the wire.

  • Internal storage:128 MB 2
MicroSD card support up to:32 GB
    RAM:48 MB
    CPU:Unisoc T107
Features:Torch, Gameloft Games (Snake, Tetris, BlackJack, Arrow Master, Air Strike, NinjaUp); Origin Data games (Racing Attack – Multiplayer, DOODLE JUMP, CROSSY ROAD, English with Oxford)

  • +3

    Blast from the past!
This phone was too expensive for what it was :-)

    • +4

I remember back in the day, this phone, in its original size, with no colour screen, was a shade over $1000 in about 2002. In todays money, that’s about $1700.

I remember getting one of the originals and it was $299 + $50/month over 24 months… on Vodafone.

      • Yes, Apple took Nokia's golden goose!

  • +1

This was when smart people bought Apple stock

  • +4

Yuck! Micro USB port - did they do that on purpose to emphasise it's an "old" phone?

  • +1

    Great burner phone

  • The thought of being given one of these as a punishment when I was a kid cracks me up

  • +1

Is there a way to remove the web apps like facebook and opera?
I have a 13yo thats smart enough to use web versions of certain apps that I want to remove him from

    • I don’t know… maybe put a “calls only” sim in it? You could delete the data connection details, but it takes a 2 mins Google search to find them again.

I was going to do the same thing. Either delete the apps, or lock out the internet from connecting. They could still piggyback off WiFi though…

    • +1

you can't, i actually returned the nokia phone i purchased because of this, it's not dumb enough

    • +7

lol my 5 year old figured out how to access a YouTube domain block on my router by accessing games with ads that have YouTube links in them that use different domain names.

  • If only it had a GPS chip, it would be a perfect phone for kids to know their whereabouts as well.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but these don't support VoLTE, so they will "stop working" soon when 3G is turned off.

    • +7

VoLTE does not affect purchase decision making because the device comes preloaded with snakes.

    • +1

Couldn't find it on GSM Arena, but the store listing for this phone on JB Hifi claims it does have VoLTE, so it will probably be OK after the end of the year.

      • +1
        • Couldn't find whether it supports VoLTE listed there…

          • +1

            @coxymla: Nokia

With an even bigger battery, Nokia 8210 4G delivers weeks of standby time, so you can go offline with confidence. You’ll also enjoy longer talk times and crystal-clear audio quality with VoLTE technology.¹

            then…

¹ The actual availability of VoLTE calls is subject to local operators’ and carriers’ services and HMD's support for a particular operator.

    • +1

Correct. "Between December 2023 and September 2024, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone will close their 3G networks to make room for new, faster services. The 3G network shutdown will affect vital equipment and services and the road transport sector is urged to start their transition immediately."

    • +1

      isn't this a 4G phone?

    • +1

      Correct me if I'm wrong,

      You are wrong. Has VoLTE.
I hope nobody is selling a phone without it now.

      https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_au/nokia-8210-4g?sku=16LIBG2…

    • +1

Just got mine today and can confirm that is does support VoLTE. It comes up in the top next to the sim card connection that it is using.

  • +1

these are indestructible. all they did was take out the old internals but are still using the same shell from the 90's

  • +4

Jesus the wooden spoon was bad enough but a punishment Nokia is going to leave a mark

  • +1

    I miss the flip phones

  • +3

Dual SIM too. You can put two long-expiry cheap SIMs into these for use cases where you only expect to receive incoming texts, e.g. SMS order updates, or as a burner number to put into price comparison websites.

  • +4

The good old days of snake and charging once a week.

  • +4

Smart parent = give kid a dumb phone

    • -4

      Cruel parent.

      • +3

U sure, it has snake what more could u want
