    Grabbing 8 of these.
Had the original Samsung Smart tags and my kids have iphones.

The comparison with the original smart tag versus iphone location tracking is: Smart tag would track more frequently than Apple iphone. Apple tracking would only show current location not recent locations.

There are way more Samsung devices for the Smarttag to connect to than iphones connecting with other iphones.

    Hooe that helps.

  • +2

Does it alert if you are being stalked like airtag ?

    • Yes it does

    • +1

I gave one of my old Smart Tags to a friend to carry around for three days to see if he gets a notification on his Samsung phone. He didn't; that makes it actually more useful for tracking stolen items.

Not sure if the new ones do it though.

edit: Turns out there's a setting in the SmartThings Find app under Labs that turns on "Unknown tag detection".

  • Im going on holidays on the 7th of november and want to use this in luggage. Whats samsung like with delivery times? Im unsure i would receive it on time.

    • The phones I've ordered arrive in about 2 business days. Not sure about tags though.

    • It says preorders are shipped 16 Oct and has quoted 3-10 business day delivery from that date.

      • +1

Yes, but in another page it says they are shipped 'from' 16th October. So i didnt know what chance i had.. especially if it takes the maximum 10 business days.

    • +2

You were planning on going on holidays with or without it anyway. Does it really matter if you don't receive it in time for this occasion?

      • +3

Yep, because i wont want the product if it doesnt arrive on time. Im doing 15 flights over 2months. I had been looking at different options for tags/tiles. Was going to go buy something at jbhifi or somewhere anyway. So fingers crossed this one arrives on time!

        • +1

Ahh that's fair enough mate. Sounds like an epic trip! 👌🏻

          • +2

@orly: It is.. but i think i'll need a holiday after the holiday!

    • the washing machine and dryer I ordered a couple of months back took 2 weeks to arrive…I guess different with tags

      • 🤞

    • FWIW I ordered 2 on Friday and the order is still being prepared for dispatch. So, who tf knows how long it will take.

If I pay $11 more I could order it on Amazon and get it delivered tomorrow, or pick it up from JB…how backwards…

      • I got mine yesterday! I got a 4 pack :-)

  • Can I set up and track these using a non-Samsung Android phone?
Contemplating ditching the 'spare iPhone' I bought so I can use Airtags.

  • +6

I have used Tile, Apple Airtags, EUFY and now Samsung PLUS (UWB)
there is no contest Samsung wins hands down.
Location History is excellent and sadly lacking in the other options, also smart things service that tracks these tags is native on all Samsung mid-hi end phones, It doesn't get shuffled into low power and hardly ever runs (So lots of active base stations around) mine dont get 6 months battery. but I have a supply of cheap energizer CR2032 cells.
Only issue I had, I could get a ping in a locker at tokyo station (also 2 levels underground), but apple airtag also didnt help there

I want stuff like this, but I'm still waiting for a recharge version…

    • +1

With a battery life of ~1.5 years, I'm happy with CR2032.

    • +1

You really don't want a rechargeable battery when the CR2032's lasts between several months to a year and removes the need for a charging port.

      • -4

But i do. I don't want to be using single use batteries.
I'd be fine with qi charging

        • +4

I'd be fine with qi charging

An entire Qi charging loop and circuit is an even bigger ask than a charging port.

        • +2

I'd encourage you to open the thing up and see just exactly how much room the battery itself takes and a single use battery lasts much much longer.

The idea is you should be able to throw this tracker in a backpack or wallet or something and not even think about it. Then after a number of months you'll open your app to see if the battery is still good and then worst case you above to spend the $2-$5 to replace it.

It was designed to ALMOST be set and forget. And for the kind of tracking it provides, it's really something quite genius. These tech engineers know what they're doing.

      • You can buy rechargeable CR2032 batteries.

        • Why are they not mainstream?

          • @John Kimble: I'm guessing it's because of the risk of people inserting regular lithium cells into the charger and causing a flame out.

It could also be devices that use CR2032 cells last so long that it's not worth the extra cost for most people. They're also much lower capacity than primary cells and have a higher terminal voltage so might not suit every application.

          • @John Kimble: they hold nothing lol

  • I just ordered via Unidays app.

    • any discount via unidays?

      • Same price as this deal

  • How are they looping the keys in? It doesnt seem to open up like a carabina right?

    https://img.global.news.samsung.com/au/wp-content/uploads/20…

    • +1

      It's not a real image

  • Thanks got 4 via EPP

  • +1

Based on the email I received about my pre-order being unceremoniously cancelled with no warning I suspect these have been found to fail product safety standards for devices which hold a lithium coin cell battery and I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung has to issue a full recall notification in the next day or two.

    • Havent heard of any safety concerns with this new model

JBHIFI is still selling it and they're one of the stores that didnt sell the Airtag due to battery safety concerns and they still dont sell it

      • Is there actually stock anywhere?
I checked a bunch of retailers and although a few of them still had listings on their website none of them had stock or an ETA .

        • Is there actually stock anywhere?
I checked a bunch of retailers and although a few of them still had listings on their website none of them had stock or an ETA .

Did you check JB? Their page says 16/10.

Also available to order, albeit not at the discounted price.

    • I ordered the 4 pack before I posted the deal, and order still showing as 'awaiting dispatch' (4 pack doesn't ship out until 16th Oct).

      • If they aren't about to be recalled then Amazon definitely got some splainin to do…
Especially considering they wouldn't do anything about that heymix garbage when I gave them a detailed write up and pictures proving that not only was the original job non compliant but that it wasn't even remotely meeting the specs or having any of the important features they strongly promoted

        • they do not care lol, some sellers literally sell grey market imports as australian model tech items on amazon. reported them a year ago and 2 months ago again, nothing happend

          • @abjsdhasehasee: I'm just a bit burnt that they cancelled my pre-order… There's not much stock around, if any of the 4pk and my faith in the Samsung store is pretty low after two pre-orders got delivered weeks after release :(

  • I've got the same price on the Samsung Employee Partner Portal. I just ordered a pack of 4. Thanks OP.

  • "Galaxy SmartTag2 needs to be paired with ultra-wideband(UWB)-enabled Galaxy smartphones with Android 11 or higher to fully function."

    "Current Galaxy products that support UWB include Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S22+, Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold2, Z Fold3, Z Fold4, Z Fold5."

Does this mean if I don't have UWB I can't use the tag at all? I have a base S22…

    • All good, found this in the fine print elsewhere.

"Compass View feature requires ultra-wideband(UWB)-enabled Galaxy smartphones with Android 11 or higher. Availability of the Compass View feature may vary by OS version, connected device, or country."

    • +2

Tag should still work, just won't have the AR Finding Feature using Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology.

  • this deal is for edu.au account. how do i get one?

  • +2

    My order:

    Arrives on 17/10/23 Standard Delivery
    Shipping Charges: Free

  • Any updates on shipping? Mine says shipped in the timeline but the status still says awaiting dispatch

    • +1

      Mine was delivered this morning.

      • Thanks for the update! Was this for the 4pack or just the single?

        • Sorry I should have mentioned that was the single pack. I ordered the 4-pack a day later; that's still "Awaiting dispatch" on the website.

          • @eug: The 4-pack which I ordered on Thurs 12/10 arrived today via StarTrack. I didn't get a shipping notification for this delivery and the website still says "Awaiting dispatch".

    • If you ordered the 4 pack, it doesn't ship out until 16th Oct (today).

      • Update: Shipped out with Auspost Tracking; should be arriving tomorrow.

      • Mine just got dispatched. Will arrive tomorrow!

        • Same here.

          • @RichardL: Haha i saw your message pop up right after posted my comment. You beat me by 3 seconds lol

    • Ordered 2 singles on Friday…still "preparing for dispatch" -_-

  • +6

I just got mine in the mail and have put a couple videos up one for the teardown to see what is inside and the other video is how to disable the sound easily.

    Disable Sound
    https://youtu.be/hIfUHOo93sk?si=MJSaNJUBPfqY9iim

    • Both links go to the same video

    • Interesting teardown 👌🏻 So was there any functional reason electronic wise for the integrated keyring?

      • +1

Not at all nothing was connected to the ring it is just for design purposes. There were total of 3 flat antennas on the bottom half.

        • +2

Such an odd design decision then. Admittedly, it make the design different but I do think a compact design would have appealed to a broader market.

          • +3

            @orly: They're pretty tiny IRL.

At least you don't have to pay for a case and get the added bulk like you do with Airtags.

            • @gadgetguy: But even the previous gen Smart Tag had a small hole which you could slip a keyring inside so that design worked. This integrated keyring seems unusually large for no particular reason. They are other designs that I can think of that would serve the same purpose in a compact form factor.

    • Now waiting to see the completed miniaturised wallet mod.

      • +1

I have made it wasnt going to make a video of it. But I might make a short video of what it looks like.

        • Let's see it mate 👌🏻

          • +3
            • +1

@ThaiArse: Thanks for taking the effort to post, it was interesting to see!

            • @ThaiArse: Pretty nice 3D outer shell. Going to close it up with the same 3D printed plastic?

              • +1

@orly: Nah I just used kapton tape to tape it together. The open side is against the back of my drivers licence so is protected. I didn't want to add any more thickness.

    • With the speakerless mod, have you tested if it throws any errors or anything like that?

      • +3

No it doesn't I removed the speaker in mine for my wallet version. It wouldn't be worth it for Samsung to integrate a check for the speaker.

  • Tested mine this morning and looks to work well

  • NVM, working now

    • Might have to refresh the page.

These Samsung cases make no sense to me? Why build a loop into it then ignore it? Am I missing something? 🤨🤔

    https://www.samsung.com/au/mobile-accessories/galaxy-smartta…

    This one makes sense:

    https://www.spigen.com/products/galaxy-smarttag-2-case-rugge…

Not that I will buy one anyway…

    • The Spigen Case looks nice, will be expensive in AU though…

      • Yeah, but adds too much bulk/and I assume weight IMO

        • +1

I'm a sucker for Spigen Tough/Rugged Armour Line, it's my go-to case for Phones and Peripherals..

I'll probably end up picking up a cheapo case from AliExpress for the SmartTag to minimise the scratches.

    • These Samsung cases make no sense to me? Why build a loop into it then ignore it? Am I missing something? 🤨🤔

That case lets you hook it on to things like a bag handle or similar and allow it sit flatter like a zipper pull.

  • I've used blu-tac to put one in the empty speaker space on the dash of my car, but I'm thinking I need to insulate it from the heat with something? Thoughts?

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/190487/107413/20231018…

    • +1

It would get better reception outside the cabin and less heat. I double-sided tape mine to the tail light housing

  • So I have a few of these now. AMA?

    https://imgur.com/a/5Lg2FCA

    • Setup process was good. The firmware update if you try to go to settings the first time takes maybe 15 minutes.
    • The press button default is meant to be ring your phone, but that doesn't work. I really wanted that feature so thats a problem.
    • The finder works good enough. The metres to it is probably the most handy thing.
    • Like the other tags I've tried, sometimes it can take a while for the tag to "wake up"
    • The press button default is meant to be ring your phone, but that doesn't work. I really wanted that feature so thats a problem.

      Works for me?

    • +1

Its double press to find your phone. Works for me

Single press and hold button can be configured

    • +1
      1. You need to enable in SmartThings app.
      2. You need to press the button twice.
      • Presume it also has to be in range of the phone as well

  • For those that have these, would someone be able to test if you program an action in SmartThings for the 1-button press, and connect it to non-samsung android phone with the same SmartThings account, would it trigger the action?

  • +1

Hi guy's, sorry but how would i access this if i dont have education access?
