Do these work on the same principle as Apple Airtag? i.e. relying on other people's phones in the vicinity?

    • +6

      Yes, samsung phones

      • +1

So ONLY works with samsung phones?

what generalised android phone options are available for tracking tags?

        • +6

This kind of device cannot exist because tracking software is not a part of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and therefore every vendor adds their own tracking software. And since there are over 1 billion active iPhones and over 1 billion Samsung phones you only need to glue together Samsung tracker and Apple tracker to get extremely high chance of detection :)

@alenpln: Google are rolling out their own Find My Device network - https://blog.google/products/android/google-android-safety-f…

The new Find My Device network will harness over a billion Android devices across the world to help you locate your missing belongings like headphones, tracker tags, or even your phone via Bluetooth proximity.
Attach Bluetooth trackers from Tile, Chipolo, and Pebblebee to your everyday objects — like your keys, wallets, or luggage to make them findable via the Find My Device network. And keep your ears open for updates to your existing Pixel Buds, as well as headphones from Sony and JBL, that will join the Find My Device ecosystem soon.

This works across 'all' Android phones (as opposed to Samsung phones only)

            • +1

@b3au: Oh, that's great news. This will however only work on devices that run Google services. Huawei devices, for example, or just old Android devices won't participate in that.

              • +5

Not a problem in Australia then. :)

Tile works with both Android and iOS.

          • +8

@eug: Tile (according to their own website) will only work with the devices with Tile app installed, so nearly nobody.

        • (already mentioned)

        • +2

Chipolo will have trackers that work with Google's "Find My Device" network - https://chipolo.net/en/products/category/chipolo-point - as one example.

(Google have delayed launching the Find My Device network though - https://9to5google.com/2023/07/27/find-my-device-network-lau…)

Google is not launching the Find My Device network “until Apple has implemented protections for iOS.” By making sure iPhone owners can find FMD-compatible trackers, this should hopefully reduce and help prevent the Google network from being used to track Apple devices without awareness from their owners. That would reflect badly on the FMD network and associated products, which is an ongoing occurrence for AirTags.

    • +22

Yup. I wonder if things have changed since this comparison in Melbourne.

      • +1

        Wow, that's a great video!

      • +3

Surprised Apple Airtag didn’t work as well as I expected.

        • +10

The Samsung communication hardware is more advanced & has longer range. eg. Apple tags have <1/2 distance compared to Tile.

            • -6

@freecandy: They are more advanced, as a result the Samsung tracker costs 1.5x more and has 1/4 the battery life. And they actually have a hole for attaching to stuff.

              • +1

@Jolakot: hmm 1/4 battery is concerning i think?

                • +8

@CyberMurning: Certainly not 1/4 the battery life of an Airtag.

SmartTag2 is 500 days on 'normal', or 700 days 'extended'. Airtag is around a year.

          • @taki: This looks way bigger than the airtag?

            • +5

@richmond12: Don't forget to add an additional $10 for an airtag holder if you want to attach it to your keys, pets etc.

            • @richmond12: yes and no. it looks bigger than it is, i saw a video and its around the side of a sdhc card, like the cards you use in cameras

      • +5

Brilliant! Glad I have a smarttag+ and not airtag! :)

  • +4

    still waiting for my chipolos

AirTag & equivalent are great though, came in clutch at the airport on my first use, after leaving a carry on at the exit of plane due to fumbling around with kids. Was able to track it and see where it was left behind.

    • +1

      still waiting for my chipolos

Wow, didn't realise they haven't even shipped out yet…

Luckily I was too indecisive and by the time I decided the referral discount was removed.

  • +5

This or the Google version that's supposed to be released. So tempting

    • IMO, if you're in the Samsung Ecosystem, then get the Samsung SmartTag. If you have a Pixel, I would wait to see what Google has to offer.

      • +12

Yeh I'm with samsung. I ask this because i thought the google one would have wider range to search. Ie. Any android phone versus just samsung.

  • +5

The usual "this is an educational store, you need an university email or some other form to get to this" comment.

    • yeer how are all these OzB working around that?

      • +1

My primary school aged daughter has a NSW Education email address 😬

Only found out because of covid and zoom meetings etc

        • +1

mine too in VIC; it was fun, until the IT decided to block inbound/outbound messages…sigh

      • uni students down to primary school kids have edu emails so it covers quite a huge range considering students tend to splurge and parents can take advantage of these to grab a deal for their child

        • Plus anyone who works for any of the education depts. Surely almost everyone knows a teacher.

      • +1

Probably majority of ozbs have gone to uni hence have alumni email from university that gives them access.

        • +2

I finished university nearly 20 years ago, I don't think my email is still active.

        • +1

I know macquarie keeps emails active but i think lot of others dont, UWS doesnt

          • @kirbycake: Oh that's weird I know UNSW does; thought it would be across the board i stand corrected.

  • Wow didnt even know they were coming out with the second version

I bought four of the standard ones a while back for $30 eachand theyve been great. I even have one for my keys and they open the garage.

    • +1

Wow didnt even know they were coming out with the second version

This would be the third tag by Samsung. SmartTag -> SmartTag+ -> SmartTag2

    • Can you please guide me for this? You wouldn't happen to be using tuya for your garage?

  • How do these compare with the old smart tag +. Looks like miles better battery life but that's the main advantage?

    • This 3rd generation is the only one with UWB I believe.

      • +4

        The SmartTag+ also had UWB.

      • +5

The plus also had it. Essentially these are sleeker and have better battery life, and Samsung have consolidated the features of the tag and tag+ into a single model

  • +1

If i put both the Apple Airtag & Samsung Smarttag on my dog, will it increases my chances of finding him in the unfortunate event that he does escape?

    • +2

Providing that the the tags aren't out of batteries, they'll work very well for this purpose. If you're close enough you'll know the exact location, but it they're in a position without any apple or Samsung devices you'll only know their last location. Still useful though and it you get within a uwb Bluetooth range at least it'll let you know.

    • +1

apparently the new batteries on the smart tags 2 last 500 to 750 days dependent on power saving settings, which before, was a huge pain point for people as they used to last about 175 days ish but then again, its pre-order so we don't know how accurate that would be but it is a huge claim so hopefully its good

    • Just buy a real GPS tracker for this purpose.
      Tractive etc.

      • The Tractive has a battery live between 2-7 days before needing a recharge.

Probably good for tracking real-time movements on a daily basis, but I believe the Apple and Samsung trackers serve as a much better low maintenance tracker for when you've lost your pet

        • Low maintenance that is next to useless in a real "lost" event. Open areas will lose connection via Bluetooth quickly and will only show the last known location. Pets move quickly..

Charging the device via usb cable isnt difficult or time consuming. You charge your phone everyday. Plugging it in every few days for a few hours is easy.

          • @CauseNEffect:

            Pets move quickly..

Pets don't run full-bore 24/7. They do get tired and take a break too. At least if you know which general area it's in, you can start narrowing down your search to a few streets rather than an entire suburb or two.

Plugging it in every few days for a few hours is easy.

Everyone has different levels of "easy". I'm OK with charging my phone every day as I'm used to it, but if Samsung releases a similar phone that only needs charging once a week, I'm definitely going for it. Technology is meant to get more convenient as time progresses.

GPS trackers will also require a monthly subscription. If your pet escapes every week or month, or they have a history of running full-bore 24/7, it would probably make sense. But if it escapes maybe once a year or two, a low-maintenance low-cost tracker like this would make more sense.

  • I can't even find the 4 pack… only 1

    • +3

      It's the Black/White circle (2nd option)

    • I've posted a Wanted ad in classified for a share if anyone is planning on getting the 4 pack :)

  • Nice ! 1 step ahead OP

  • +4

Buy now or wait till black friday sale hmmm

  • I've always wanted tags to speed up the process of finding luggage at the carousel after a flight. Will these work for that? Also wondering how well the AR-find feature is compared to Apples one from a few years ago..

    • +13

I've always wanted tags to speed up the process of finding luggage at the carousel after a flight. Will these work for that?

You can't see your suitcase while it passes by on the carousel?

      • +1

Yeah, sometimes it's a bit hard when there's more than like 3 passengers hey @spaceflight? 😅

But seriously, I'd rather know where it is after landing and not worry my way through immigration that it might be spinning around the carousel ready to be stolen. Might even give me some worry-free time to shop duty-free after a longer flight. 😁

        • +3

Yeah, sometimes it's a bit hard when there's more than like 3 passengers hey

I've never had a problem flying on a full A380

But seriously, I'd rather know where it is after landing

So you can then worry your way through immigration knowing that it is spinning around the carousel ready to be stolen?

          • @spaceflight: A380's don't go into space, nice try!

Luggage doesn't magically transport onto the carousel instantly..? When you fly enough in this atmosphere, you tend to rememeber where the carousels are. So you just have to beat the luggage there, as long as this thing works as I was asking originally..

    • +8

Yeah they work well for that. I recently went to the Philippines and had a smarttag+ (last gen version) in my bag. I was on the plane sitting on the tarmac about to take off and could tell my bag wasn't loaded onto the plane as it was showing 200m away.
Sure enough got to destination fired up the app and my bag was still in Manila. Having proof and being able to pinpoint where my bag was made life somewhat easier to retrieve it.

      • Woah, nice! Good you were able to keep an eye on it after they left it behind. That's a bonus in terms of lodging insurance if anything happened afterwards!

I'm going to have to definitely get my hands on these.

    • +1

I've used the smart tag + for that.. Works well. A little awkward holding your phone but works.

      • +1

Thank you, will be grabbing a few!

        • +1

          NW!
The only issue with the older gen for me was that everytime I travel I usually have to put new batteries (or must have remembered to take out the batteries). Now that it's fixed, it'll be even more useful!

  • +12

hopefully in 10 years the eu keep doing the good things theyve doing in the mobile space and enforce some common standard for these devices. would certainly make law enforcements job easier.

  • Bought a 4 pack, I have one of the oringinal smart tags and I've been looking for good deal to buy more. Had no idea this was being released, happy days.

  • +2

Some how I had 14000 reward points in my account that I was able to redeem, so basically got it for free!

    • You must have spent quite a bit in the Samsung Store to accumulate that many reward points.

      • If you've spent $2,500 over the past 2 years (e.g. a flagship phone and a tablet), the earn rate is 3%. That $2,500 would earn $75 credit.

The next step up is 5% if you've spent $4k in the past 24 months.

        Under $2,500 it's 1%.

        • Didn't know that it's dynamic. I should have passed 4k by now. Should try to make the other purchased before it drops back down.

Edit: Must have been a promo but I remeber getting around 10% for my TV and soundbar. Then I only had to pay sub 700 dollars for the Fold 4

      • Nothing too crazy I would have thought. S20FE, Galaxy Watch 3, S23 Ultra, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

In fact I just checked, and the S20FE and watch 3 didn't earn any points. The S23 actually earnt 13920 points. I assume there must have been a bonus promo.

    • +1

Thank you so much for this post!

I had no idea those points actually did anything useful.

I had enough points to buy the four pack for $29

    • +1

I had no idea from my S23 Ultra order I had ~18k points, $1.34 to pay as you can 'only' pay 9(% of an order value with points.

      • Probably so you're still paying the GST rather than Samsung losing on that part.

    • Can anyone please share the direct link on where you can see your points? After I log in, it's telling me it's only available for US members? (might be because I'm in the US right now - so thought a direct link may help)

Did you guys also have to sign up to Samsung Rewards separately before earning the points? I did buy the S23U but don't recall being part of Samsung Rewards - shame if I had to in order to earn points!

  • +2

I wonder how many people have these in their car or bag and are unaware.

    • +4

Not many. Android has put a tracker detector into android and detects any brand of tracker following you. I suspect apple must have something similar.

      • +2

        Can confirm.

Went hiking with friends and my dog (Tile tracker on collar) and the Samsung 20-something showed a message like "a device is following your location".

        • +1

          It's warning you that your dog's a robot now…

  • how well do these work if you put on a cat collar? asking for a friend.

    • +1

      Meowwww

    • +1

Don't need one if your cat stays inside
