Overpriced even at half price as it has low protein content. For example, 100% Whey only has ~75% protein and others like High Protein have even less at ~65%.

    • +4

I always wonder why these Musashi deals are so popular. Their products always look under dosed compared to the competition.

Maybe convenience of being able to walk into a store and grab off the shelf?

      • +18

IMO it's the best tasting WPI on the market, mixes and tastes great

        • +10

          This.

Yes it's one of the more expensive brands. But their quality and consistency is above the rest imo. Taste, little to no grit, mixes well and I believe their nutritional figures are one of the more trusted brands compared to cheaper/unknown brands that claim certain things.

Still tho. Only worth it at half pric imo and the must know people only wait for three deals to buy them.

        • +6

agreed, there's more to life than drinking gross high yield protein drinks

        • They lost me when they stopped making the jam donut flavoured protein. Hands down best tasting protein powder I've ever tasted.

        • +2

Really? I found that Musashi tasted really bad and mixed very poorly.

        • Musashi 100% Whey not pure WPI. Blend of WPC and WPI. I assume it is mainly WPC.

        • +1

I quite like Venom and Bulk Nutrients WPI too (vanilla)

        • I used to think Musashi was OK. Recently bought VitalStrength Whey and it mixes far better and tastes amazing.

      • They taste better IMO

      • +2

When I first started amateur bodybuilding 18 years ago, Musashi was one of the first available proteins I tried in rural Australia.

It was so f'n awful that I ended up just having tuna as a post workout that first year. I still can't believe to this day that they are everywhere, it was literally gag inducing and I haven't been game enough to try it in 15+ years.

The difference between Amino Z & Musashi is monumental.

      • +2

Not only that, their products are low quality in terms of ingredients as well as manufactured processes but they have a great marketing team and sponsor a lot of sports / people and hence people fall for their products.

    • +7

Most popular protein brands (e.g. ON) only have around 77% protein.

When it's on sale, I find Musashi 100% Whey is usually the best value and taste combo of the common brands that are easily available.

If you're elite enough to notice a 2% difference in protein content in your supplements, you probably wouldn't be asking for opinions on OzBargain…

      • +1

I stopped paying top $$ for proteins laced with fillers many years ago. I mostly buy 20KG WPC bag for ~$500 that I split with a mate. It's got ~80% protein content and I mix that with Costco Cacao powder $13/kg which also has 28% protein.

Every now and then there are better deals to be have like this recent MyProtein deal for 5KG @ $66. You can't go wrong at that price.

        • +4

Yeah, I totally appreciate that there are ways to get bulk protein cheaper.

I just think Musashi is pretty good value for most people looking to pick up protein from their local chemist or supermarket, who won't notice half a gram difference in protein per scoop.

I jumped on that My Protein deal too. Much too cheap to pass up!

          • +2

@LambChop: Agree, I did bought a 2kg Musashi @ $44 from this deal last year, which I thought was good value but price keeps going higher and higher.

        • This is not "laced with fillers".

        • +1

I did this when I still lifted. One fat bag of unflavoured protein and mixed it with a teaspoon of milo. Lasted like a year at a time.

    • +1

Where else are you going to get 2kg of >75% protein for under 60 bucks?

Bulk nutrients WPC is around this level give or take, and you're looking at almost $70 for 2kg. AminoZ on their sales are better value, but they are not so common. Even Myprotein generally don't get much better than this pricing, and then you have to deal with short-dated products and really dogshit customer service.

I don't think this is a fair take at all to be honest.

      • -3

Bought this from recent MyProtein deal for 5KG @ $66.

Mostly, I prefer to buy 20kg WPC bag for ~$500 but it's preferred to have mate or 2 that you can split it with.

        • +3

That’s a good price, but at 63% protein content that’s significantly less (especially since you called out Musashi for 75% being low?)

          • -3

@NedStark102: I think you totally missed 3kg additional quantity.

            • +3

@dealhunter52: I didn't - just find it ironic you've purchased something with a significantly lower protein content, after complaining about Musashi products being bad value for having a low protein content themselves (at 75%).

A ~20% total protein difference puts them in different product categories, so not a fair comparison.

              • -3

@NedStark102: Musashi is bad value at the price it is. I look at how much total protein I'm getting for my $$.

                2kg Musashi for $61 at ~75% protein = 1.5kg Protein
                5kg MyProtein for $66 at ~63% protein = 3.2kg Protein

Hope that helps. I know maths is hard :-)

                • +3

@dealhunter52: Refer back to my original question smart man - Where else are you going to get 2kg of >75% protein for under 60 bucks?

You still haven't answered this, you've only provided a link to a (now sold out) inferior product that isn't in the realm of comparison, yet in the same comment chain you also say you don't buy products with 'fillers'. What do you think makes up the other 37% of the product you linked above?

You're a walking hypocrit who can't have a discussion in good faith mate.

                  • @NedStark102:

Mostly, I prefer to buy 20kg WPC bag for ~$500 but it's preferred to have mate or 2 that you can split it with.

Having reading difficulties? Gosh you're hopeless! This 20kg bag at $519 delivered (after voucher) is good value and comes down to $52 for 2kg with ~82% protein.

I don't buy 2kg bag, if not cheap enough or good value.

    • Can you recommend what I should buy instead?

      • -1

I would personally get something like this and spit it with a mate or 2. Its $519 for 20Kg delivered after voucher and ~82% protein content or wait for a MyProtein deal. Black Friday is coming so there will be some good deals around.

        • Curious how you go about adding lecithin to the bulk bags and which type you use?

      • Buy Coles Pea Protein at $10 for 500g. The protein to powder amount ratio is very high.

    • +1

Tried a few other plant proteins. Musashi is the best tasting and also no issues with my gut.

  • Buy ON from elite supp deal, it works out better with cash rewards.

    • On from Chemist warehouse now 1/2 bro

      • EliteSupps is still cheaper after cashback lol

      • ON gold not on half price….or at least I can't find it

        • ON performance isolate (@Chem Warehouse) works out to be more expensive (it has the same macros at 79g protein per 100g)

Performance whey has only 63% protein and is not comparable.

  • +1

Also BSC Nutrition seems to be half price

  • +1

Rice crisp bars are the GOAT, undefeated.

  • +1

I had some of these at 50% off.

They were terrible, ended up throwing it away. Really poor quality and taste is horrible.

  • +1

Highly recommend INC as an alternative to Musashi, less sweet if you find that an issue. Generally cheaper too. Their 100g protein bars are also incredible in comparison, the peanut butter fudge one tastes like a snickers

    • +1

Hard disagree on the protein bars - musashi deluxe bars crap all over INC. The actual whey powder is good value though, particularly the cookies and cream flavour from INC.

      • Interesting. I was a long term fan of the Musashi bars but after recently trying the INC ones found them to be much tastier. To each their own!

    • +3

Musashi High Protein bars are top tier for protein content. They beat INC 100g bars hands down.

      Metric (per 100g) Musashi INC
      Calories: 380 341
      Protein: 50.8g 31.2g
      Fat: 10.2g 9.7g
      Carbs: 3.3g 9.8g
      Fibre: 1.6g 10.7g
      • Far content on both bars are like 40% of my allowable fats a day lol

  • +8

Buy the $10 500g pea protein at Coles. 20.2g of protein per 25g of powder. Life is too short to be smashing 90g of powder for 60g protein. Do it in 75g instead and cheaper.

    • How does it taste though?

      • +8

Chuck a small ripe banana in there with some water and blend and you are fine.

Too many people want their protein drinks to taste like a maccas thick shake. So they get crazy flavoured stuff and put heaps of milk in, sweet fruits etc. Then wonder why their macros is all out of whack. The flavoured stuff isn't sustainable taste wise, best to find a unflavored solution and learn to minimally sweeten it (or drink it straight with water).

    • +1
      • +6

Very underrated if you are serious about eating as little protein powder as possible. I see work mates smashing 3 or 4 chocolate looking protein shakes a day which they just struggle with, makes them feel like s**** and they burp and fart up a storm. Get the protein from actual food then top up with this stuff.

PS we can also all probably have less dairy in our lives. Will help some who have problems with bloating etc.

        • +1

100% on the real food comment, but often the cost in dollars and prep time to hit your particular protein target is on the high side and something like this is great.

Looks like work mates are crossing their lactose threshold and need lactase. Or go for dairy protein with lactase enzyme included, like BN's Protein Matrix+.

    • Game changer deal imo. Thank you. Around 1/2 the cost of BN WPC for the about the same about of protein.

    • +1

You’d need to eat about twice the amount of pea protein to get the same benefit as whey. Not all protein is created equal. Animal based proteins have much better amino acid profiles and absorption.

      https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40279-018-1009-y/…

      • Critic's of that highlight that different foods containing protein can combine to complement their rate limiting amino acid. The classic example is rice and legumes, complementing the amino acid lysine, resulting in a high score as the result is now considered a complete protein.
Given that pea protein would not be the sole source of protein, the score does not accurately reflect the overall protein usability in humans. So while you do not need to eat twice as much pea protein, you may have to try twice as hard to get past the taste.

        • you may have to try twice as hard to get past the taste.

lol once you decide it isn't that bad it really isn't that bad. Just take your muscle medicine and harden up :P

But in all seriousness, whey is fine, but the facts are is that you take more of it to hit similar proteins, taste sickly sweet after a while, cost more (given Aussie dairy input costs at the moment) and we all probably consume too much dairy anyway.

      • i like how vegan/anti animal everything (including) protein people still wont accept that wouldnt have gotten this far as a species to have these conversations if we hadnt eaten animal proteins, thats how we got these amazing noggins and bodies. If we'd only et plants we'd still be dragging our knuckles (some still are - i could say see the weekends referendum at this point, but i wont). You might like to argue in a post/forum, but its hard to beat science…

  • +1

Was thinking about the high protein bars, but even $3 is a rip off. I swear they were much cheaper last 1/2 price CMWH sale.

    • -1

Plus there is a boat load of fat in them compared to unflavored protein powder. Unless you are on a massive bulk phase and eat zero fat elsewhere would not recommend those bars

      • +1

Boat load? Only 5g fat for brownie one, is that bad for 45g protein?

      • Massive bulk, huh? These are pretty much #1 for the Protein/Calorie ratio in Aus, please do share if you know of any other protein bars with a better Protein/Calorie ratio than these. The few protein snacks with better macros, non of which are bars, are wildy more expensive than these. Also, don't compare bars to powder they are two completely different things - it's like saying water is a healthier type of doughnut.

    • +2

I've been making my own bars using the below recipe and am really happy with them.

I actually roll mine into balls in a bowl of desiccated coconut as the bars are a bit sticky otherwise.

From my maths, the mix makes 16-18 balls, each with around 8g of protein, so I have three for breakfast when I'm at work.

      https://www.chewoutloud.com/5-ingredient-protein-bars-bake/

      • Nice. What is the fat and carb content per ball? Sorry if I missed it on that page

        • +1

I didn't notice before, but right at the bottom of the recipe, it lists the following per serve (although doesn't specify serving size):

          Carbohydrates: 20g | Protein: 14g | Fat: 13g

Using Wolfram Alpha just now, I get that 1/20th of the mixture (a small ball) gives around the following:

          Carbohydrates: 17g | Protein: 8g | Fat: 8g

The macro ratios are definitely not what you'll get from a low-carb sports bar, but they suit me as I'm just trying to up my protein at the moment and the rest usually takes care of itself if I exercise enough.

Oh, also, I use chocolate flavoured protein powder and honey instead of maple syrup and it tastes great to me, especially with the coconut on the outside

    • Nah this is around the best price you'll get - if you buy 10+ in store you get an additional 10% off ~2.70 bar isn't bad. Think the record low I've had them for this year was ~2.40/bar, but they used to have an RRP of 5.50 so would be 2.75 at half price.

  • Not the best price on the proteins but their pre-workout cans are one of the best on the market and also the cheapest as well.

Mainly includes ingredients that actually work and not much else which is good.

Gonna get a few 4 packs since no 24x pack deal on their website.

    • Very low citrulline malate at 2g per serve. If that was at about 6-8g it would be a great blend.

    • Referring to Musashi Energy?
Currently cheaper at Coles at $2.17 per can.

  • ive always wondered about protein, for years i used to take the gold standard one, i was on and off lifting for the past 13 years, for the past 1.5 years i got back into gym and lifting again and i have not taken any protein powder or any creatine or any kind of supplements, I've grown bigger than i ever have (testament to a very strict diet). I'm wondering if protein powder really does make a difference tho..

here is like 5 versions of the protein powder, which is best for someone who wants to grow muscle without putting on any weight. like lean. (not bulk)

    • Actual training is more important than any suppliments. If your diet already includes a good amount of protein, you'll see minimal gains from protein powders.

If you're on a diet or meal plan that does not include a lot of protein (~1.5g per kg of body weight), then you would suppliment it with powder to help the training process.

Research varies, but ones I've read says protein powder can provide on average 8% more muscle gain, and creatine is around 3%. So, not a whole lot really when you think about it..

      • here is the kicker, my diet would horrify most people but it has worked for me beautifully, i skip breakfast, i eat a salad for lunch (no protein) than fruits at night, sometimes nuts as a snack. this is done 5 days a week, than weekend its cheat days so its open season with carbs and meat, this method allowed me to loose covid weight and maintain

        • Yea nice. Sounds like an omad/intermittent fasting style diet.
I'm guessing you train regularly then to see the muscle gains you mentioned.

If it was me (and it is because I eat similarly) look into supplimenting with powder because muscle do need protein.
Maybe you'll see some benefit from it added with all the extra work you're doing.

          • @Herbse: religiously 3 times a week though. Monday Wednesday Friday.
good point i guess its worth a 3 month test run to see if it helps gain that extra muscle, which one of these do you recommend? there is like 5 types of protein in that link

            • @Roe Jogan: I go with the 100% whey one. Has the best bang for buck with number of scoops and protein amount wise.

            • +2

@Roe Jogan: Tbh I'm surprised you have energy for working out with no carbs or meat in your diet??

              • +1

@Herbse: yeh bro idk how that works, i mean i eat that on the weekend idk if that counts, its my sheer will i guess. sometimes i do feel tired but that fulfilment after a workout makes me feel better like ive achieved something no matter how the day plays out

        • Protein should help. Helped me when I was long term vegetarian.

          • @Cave Fire: idk if its worth a test drive sinceive been seeing good results without any sort of supplements, i might stop by chemist warehouse to pick up a bucket to try out for 3 months.

  • -1

Please note that the protein bars have Sucralose which is a very dangerous ingredient and can significantly increase the chances of diabetes. That's only one of its many problems.

    • How many bars a day can create diabetes

      • -2

It really depends on your body and how it deals with these stuff.

        • +1

At least show some evidence of your claim..

    • +2

Fear-mongering to the max. Countless studies have shown that when consumed within the ADI sucralose is safe - which is why it has been approved by food safety agencies in the US, EU, Aus, NZ, etc. Claiming that sucralose is a "very dangerous ingredient and can significantly increase the chances of diabetes" is ridiculous.

      • Care to share some of those "countless" studies?

food safety agencies in the US, EU, Aus, NZ, etc

Yeah that doesn't mean anything. They approve any shit that's thrown at them as long as it doesn't instantly kill you.

        • +2

I love it when people make baseless claims and when people point out how wrong they are they demand to be presented with studies. If you are unable to search a journal for yourself you really shouldn't be commenting on health/science matters at all.

          Nonetheless here's a comprehensive metanalysis:

          https://doi.org/10.1016/j.fct.2017.05.047

          Per the studies highlights:
          • Comprehensive review of sucralose toxicology: growth, development, genetox, reproduction, neurotoxicity, and carcinogenicity.
          • No adverse effect on health or glycemic indices following long-term sucralose consumption in healthy and diabetic subjects.
          • Estimated intakes of sucralose remain well below acceptable daily intake values.
          • Confirms conclusions of regulatory agencies globally that sucralose is safe for intended uses as a non-caloric sweetener.

With respect to your specific concerns regarding 'significantly increase the chance of diabetes' note the relevant paragraph from the conclusion
"Previous and numerous more recent clinical trials, in both healthy and diabetic subjects and using a variety of approaches and conditions, and including measurement of gastrointestinal incretins, collectively provides evidence of a lack of effect of sucralose on both glycemic control and gut hormones and/or gut function"

There is plenty of false information coming through social media and suspect you are likely repeating what you have seen elsewhere out of concern for the health of others (i.e. you are more than likely a caring person with good intentions). As a general rule don't repeat health/medical information you have seen on social media and if you are concerned take the time to look into the published data. Sadly by repeating baseless claims about the safety of certain additives, you are contributing to an issue that will likely see health information being censored on social media (which is a terrible thing as it will prevent additives that actually cause concern from being investigated).

      • Just because its been 'approved' doesn't necessarily mean its safe or healthy to be honest

  • So from what I know, you need some fat for preserving the protein. Then after that you get about 3g carbs as that's a component of the protein chains. So maybe this does have 3g additives per serve. Guessing you go unflavoured to get the best protein content, then add your own low cal/no cal flavours.

  • does chemistwarehouse not offer free shipping anymore?

    • Don't think they do it for bulky items like protein powders. I tried buying some INC 2kg massgainer and the they tried to charge me $12 in shipping even though i went over their $50 threshold. Turns out the tub is really, really big so I guess that was justified.

  • +1

What's their pre-workout like? I'm trying to find non stim or low-caffeine pre workout powder that doesn't make my face tingle (like BN's non stim powder).

  • Awesome - been waiting for this did a little restock of bars the other week when they had 40% off, good to know the days of 50% off had ended.

  • Try VitalStrength Whey. Higher protein content. Mixes much better. Tastes amazing.

  • Half-price Musashi now available at Woolies too.

Looks like 20 SKUs including 12 types of bars.
