The basic calories in vs calories out seems so hard to grasp.

    • +3

The ratio of macros matter too. For some, going on keto for some duration solves a lot of health issues. Though I am not a fan of giving up carbs at all, being a vegetarian, not easy too.

    • +7

It's a hard balance when people are getting fit and actually need to increase their calories to account for increased physical exercise. Calories in vs calories out won't work if all you are eating are chips and ice cream. 'Not all calories are created equal' and eating for satiety is a better concept to live by.

I used to think this but “That Sugar Movie” suggests you can get fat based on the type of calories, in his case excessive sugar.

    • +31

Speaking from experience with keto, I managed to drop from 105kg to 77kg in a year thanks to the diet. Sure the reason that Keto works is due to the calorie deficit, just like regular calorie counting, but it has its perks.

One big advantage is that keto foods are super filling, which means you won't be as tempted to snack or crave stuff. I mean think about it, what's going to be easier to gorge on, a 2L tub of ice cream or a 12-pack of avocadoes? Plus, when you start keto, you shed some initial water weight, and that can be a real morale booster that you don't get with regular calorie counting. It can be the difference between sticking with it or quitting after seeing little progress. Also, your body uses glycogen as its primary energy source, and when you have no glycogen (as it comes from carbs) your body utilises fat as your primary source of energy. Now I'm no scientist and don't know the specifics of how it works, but knowing that my body only has the option to use fat as it's primary fuel source gave me solace in knowing that my efforts were worth it since the scale went down on a daily basis with little fluctuations due to water weight (from carbs).

Now, Keto is great for weight loss but by no means is it a sustainable diet to stick with long term as it has quite a few drawbacks:

      • Food options are limited especially when eating out.
      • Keto flu sucks, I couldn't sleep for a good few days when starting keto and had a ton of energy. Not sure if this was due to my body switching to utilising ketones for energy or just telling me to stay awake and hunt some food. After a week it's over though and you'll be feeling good.
      • Expense: You're eating meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, and berries for pretty much every meal and these can put a dent in your wallet fast.
      • Weakness: I lifted weights alongside and felt depleted, couldn't get a pump and just felt like crap. I've heard the opposite for folks who do cardio though so results vary.

At the end of the day. carbs are not evil: I've kept off the weight and just do basic iifym for staying in shape. Life without carbs isn't a life worth living, burgers, pizza, ice cream… these are all glorious and as long as you can exercise some restraint and some self-discipline, it's just calories at the end of the day.

Thanks for sharing your experience and realistic expectations for those giving keto a go. I’ve always been low carb by preference but have been considering keto for a stint.

This has to be THE answer.
ChatGPT will crawl on your comment and would adapt as next Keto answer.

      • Well done mate, fat adaption is a thing

    • +4

Body functions are controlled by hormones. Carbs raise insulin and insulin controls fat storage.

    • +3

Ever stopped to think about why the entire western world seemingly lost the ability to regulate calories in vs out around the same time?

Hint, its because the makeup of our modern diet (extremely refined carb and sugar heavy) (profanity) with our satiety signals.

  • whats a keto?

      • -1

but I like both high fats and carbs :D

        • -1

          Then don't do Keto.

      • -2

        good info.

        I might try 'girl dinner'….

      • It's good until he mentions "just look at Horses or Gorillas". Two completely different animals with different metabolisms and different ways of processing foods. He also tends to ignore the science when it comes to organics. The rest is great though.

In this context a diet that removes carbs from your diet and will put your body into "ketosis" in which it will burn your body's fat.

I know of a good number of people (including my sister) that have used it to manage type 2 diabeties and reduce or eliminate the need for medication.

Personally I think it works very well in conjuction with intermittent fasting to help lose weight.

But also personally I don't find it sustainable long time as I like all foods and don't want to cut out any food groups.

  • it keeps asking me to sign up to premium, despite already doing so. is this happening to anyone else?

    • yes happened to me, I then hit the 'redeem previous purchase' and it stopped

  • +1

Looks like a keto recipe aggregator. If you are just looking to track your macros, my fitness pal was very good from memory, esp with the barcode scanner.

    • +2

Easy Diet Diary is an Australian-based app that also has the barcode scanner and works really well. The advantage I've found of Easy Diet Diary over My Fitness Pal is that there are quite a few Australian products that the MFP barcode scanner library doesn't have that Easy Diet Diary does have. Very similar interfaces and super user friendly, I just found there's less manual entering with EDD.

      • Thanks for the lead. I don’t track the stuff anymore, but it might help someone!

  • Tried adding foods and doesn’t even have Lebanese bread or butter chicken.

  • Doesn't have Vogel's cafe-style ultra low carbs.

  • +2

Just eat meat and low carb vegetables. Don’t need to track anything

    • Just eat meat

      What about Ian ??

      • +1

If you're trapped on a mountain with no food and Ian dies first then… Sure. Otherwise, maybe don't eat Ian

    • Sure.

But some ppl track stuff to stay on their chosen path and for motivation

    • No. just eat less than 50 carbs, 20 if you have strong will power.

  • What's the catch?
You subscribe to $0 per months but they can change the price later?

  • You're a legend mate. The app looks pretty good for keto recipes on free

  • Yay! Another app that I'll never use after free lifetime subscription

  • +1 for keto. The only diet I can lose weight with, do it every few years when the kgs slip back on, can usually lose 10-20kg in 3-6months without much heartache once I’ve started…

Getting used to it is a bitch, I miss beer and pasta but better beer and cheese get me though.

  • keto is the best. if i had will power i would be on keto permanently as it makes you feel so light immediately, within a day or 2, due to carbs retaining water so if you take out carbs the water weight drops. but… as my name suggests… i love pizza.

and i have previously lost 25kg using the normal calories in calories out method. it has nothing on keto.

  • I don't wanna click "Buy Premium Now" in case it charges me…

    • Maybe it's expired? I can't test unfortunately.

    • +1

I just did it and didn't get charged.

  • So when I join I use the 0 dollar option and press 'Buy Premium Now' and I don't get charged plus I get lifetime subscription?. Thanks.

    • Its meant to. Let me know how u go :-)

  • I know when I buy a movie on Apple TV, I don't get the charge straight away. That's why I'm concerned with this purchase…

    • -1

I am concerned as I can't test it. I will expire deal, to avoid any risk of people accidentally paying money for it.
