Google Play hits 25 billion downloads

Whether you’re looking for directions, checking email or sharing a picture with friends, apps are now an indispensable part of life. And if you’re using Android, it all starts with Google Play, home to 675,000 apps and games. That’s a lot of choice. We’ve now crossed 25 billion downloads from Google Play, and to celebrate we’re offering some great discounts for the next five days.

Every day you’ll be able to choose from a collection of apps from some of the world’s top developers including Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, runtastic, Full Fat and more. And all for just 25 cents. We’ll also be offering some special collections like 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and our 25 top selling magazines, all at special prices. Visit Google Play a little later today to check them out.

Twenty-five billion is more than twice the distance, in miles, that the Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled since its launch 35 years ago. It’s the amount of time, in minutes, that have passed since some of our earliest ancestors began to set foot in Europe. And now, thanks to all of you, it’s a Google Play milestone. We look forward to the next 25 billion.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: It's the first time I made purchase on Android Market and I got charged $2 for "PENDING — GOOGLE CHECKOUT INTERNET"!!!
A: See "Authorisations" section on Google Checkout Help. This is normal for the first time purchasers, and you will get the amount back between 1-14 business days, depending on your bank.

Q: I just purchased a bunch of Apps all at once and my bank is rejecting the purchase or I'm getting other errors.
A: Remember to not purchase all the apps at one go. Keep at least a few minutes between each purchase to avoid having them pending / cancelled. If you are having such problem, just click refund in the Market app and purchase again!

Q: Can I use my app purchase on other devices?
A: Yes, app purchases are tied to your Google account, not the device you're using. Any device that supports Google Play will have access to previous purchases.

Q: Can I buy apps now for use on a future Android device
A: You cannot purchase items from Google Play until you have logged into Google Play with your Google account at least once on an Android device.

  • A technical workaround has been posted by 'Anominous Sign' here. Great work, thanks Anominous Sign!

  • A less technical workaround can be achieved by borrowing a friends device, using a demo device in a retail store. You'll need to add your Google account to the device, access Google Play and possibly make a free purchase. It should go without saying that you'll need to remove your Google account from the device once this is complete otherwise your Google data (emails, calendar and contacts) will be synced to that device.

Unfortunately not, and even if you do have a device it has to be compatible with the app you're trying to buy.
A few months ago I wanted to buy GTA3 but my phone wasn't supported, so I had to hack it so that GooglePlay thought it was compatible.
It's because when you buy the app you have to select which device you want to install it on.

But like scubacoles said, log into your google play account using a friend's phone and then you can buy them.

    • Log in to Play Store via the web with your Google Account that you will register on your Android. They will be available when you sync your Google Account to your new phone.

      • I'm in the same position (no Android phone at the momement) - I tried the above method but I'm prompted with this notification "You haven't accessed the Google Play Store app (the white shopping bag icon) on your device with your email account" :(

        • Thank you for all your suggestions. Can anyone else shed light on this? My gf has a HTC legend but it only runs 2.3 so many of the apps will not be compataible, so thus i wont be able to download them under my own account…And i'm looking to get the S3

        • +11

I got it working by using the BlueStacks app player on Windows. Install BlueStacks and then download the Google Play apk from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582422
Run the apk to install it and then in BlueStacks you can use the Google Play Store.

Google Play doesn't show up as an app, so to load it, I went to "App Stores" -> "Get Jar" -> searched for "AppDrawer" and installed that. It asked if I wanted to use 1Mobile Market or Google Play Store. I selected Google Play Store and it loaded from there. Also, once AppDrawer is installed, you can run that to find Google Play.

Once you've bought 1 thing using this method, you'll be able to buy the rest using your browser.

FYI, the BlueStacks device registered as "T-Mobile Samsung GT-I9100" for compatibility.

        • This might be a silly question, but what do I do in ~2 months time when I finally have a Galaxy S3 in my hands? How am I able to sync/transfer these purchases I'm about to make to my new phone from using this method?

        • I would imagine that, as soon as you log into your Google account and open up the Play store on your S3, the apps would begin to download and install.

        • Sounds easy enough.

And what of this BlueStacks app (and the Get Jar/AppDrawer apps)? Just disregard them?

        • Yeah, you can disregard them once you have your phone. You only need it on BlueStacks to access Google Play because it doesn't show up in the normal launcher.

        • @Anominous Sign: I used your method to get me up and running. Many, many thanks! I used it to get a few apps myself.

However as it uses an SGS2, it doesn't necessarily work with all apps. For example, SGS2 is not compatible with Nova Launcher Prime.

For example, I found that, to be able to purchase Nova Launcher Prime, a VM running Android/ICS can be used.

Basic steps and links here: http://www.keyables.com/2012/05/how-to-run-android-40-in-vir…

          My additional notes:

          • download a later version of the OVA package with Google Play here: http://www.buildroid.org/Download/buildroid_vbox86t_gl_4.0.4…
          • using VirtualBox, an error regarding networking may appear during first time. I found changing Adapter 1 to Bridged or NAT to get Internet connectivity.
          • in Google Play, your new device is called "VirtualBox"

          Good luck.

  • There goes my leftover 82c from my N7 purchase ;)

  • VERY disappointing list of apps in my opinion!

  • i am new to google play purchase, bought a few 25c apps,
but in my bank acc. there is an extra unknown $2 debit.
is that the transaction fee someone commented??

    • i dont know what transaction fees ppl are referring to - my credit card only got charged 25c for each app i bought

    • +2

I'm pretty sure if you've never bought from there before, they'll charge $2 as a 'safety' confirmation thing. It'll be back in your account in a few days.

    • +1

stig is correct, it's normal. I've added additional details to the OP.

    • +1

Read the FAQ's in the original post.

  • +2

Ugh, credit card payment rejected, rejected… accepted!
This happened last time there was a sale.
It'd work a few times and then randomly reject some purchases, the payments would show up on my credit card as going through but then google cancelled a couple of the pending payments.
After days of dealing with their support about it they refused to sell me the app at the sale price.

Most of the time their service is great but when something went wrong for me, they were just assholes.
To make it worse, they were polite assholes.

    • +1

same problem happened to me last time but i couldn't be bothered dealing with them over 10c apps

      • +2

You need to purchase the Apps slowly. Added details to the OP. Apparently something to do with fraud protection on the banks end preventing lots of little transactions happening quickly.

    • I can confirm this happened for me again this morning.

    • My biggest gripe is that I wished it worked like Steam. You add a bunch of licenses to your card, can continue shopping and then checkout. That way you can buy like 10 at once for $2.5 or something.

      • +1

That would probably complicate Googles 15 minute refund scheme

  • +2

Not sure if this has been asked previously.

I have 3 devices signed up on 1 google play account. If I purchase an App is it available on all 3 devices for just the original charge or is it only for one device?

Basically, Do I need to purchase the App separately for all three devices?

    • +5

If you have 3 devices, you only have to purchase the app once and it will be available on all devices. Alternatively you can download it through the web and select which device to download to and it will download on your phone automatically. If you go to your 'My Apps' in the Play Store you can download to other devices anything you've bought.

      • +1

Awesome, thought so. Thanks for the confirmation mate!

    • +1

no it's linked to your account and you can download as many times, as long as you're logged in to the same account to all your three devices.

    • Some apps have a different version for tablets compared to phones, but not many, One example is Swiftkey 3. I use it on my phone and it is great, but you need a different version for tablets.

  • +2

Bought DrawSomething and Cat in the Hat
    $0.50

    • +12

      I +'d you because you're good at maths :)

  • EDIT: Question already asked above.

  • +3

Get on to 'God is not great'

    I miss Hitchens :(

  • +2

    It's also Google's 14th birthday.

  • +2

I don't want to watch movies on my phone, but Google Play Help says you can just watch the movies online too (streaming, up to 1080p).

Since the rentals last up to 30 days I might actually hook my laptop to my TV and watch a few. Awesome.

    • +2

i think the 30day is the time u get to start watching the first time.
then once started the first time, u ONLY GET 48hr BEFORE IT EXPIRES.

    • Damn.

Tried it, and movie was only 480p. Emailed Google, they said film studios forbid watching in HD online.

Apparently you can download it to android tablets in HD, so not sure if the Google TV android boxes will work or not.

Happy to just torrent the one that I only bought because of false advertising, of course, but they've lost a new regular customer. They're really trying hard to lose sales here.

Hollywood execs and their wilful bite-the-hand stupidity never cease to amaze me. Google could have not falsely advertised it, too, of course.

  • +3

Nice! Au revoir $25 Google Play Nexus 7 credit…

  • can the books be read offline?

    • +2

      yes

  • if i buy it can i install it on all my google devices? tablets and smart phones?

    • Yup, purchases are attached to your account, so if you sign in to your tablet with the same account, you'll get access to all the apps that you've purchased with that account.

You can even set up a device with two accounts, so e.g. your other half's phone can have your account on it too, so both of you can use your apps.

      • doesnt that mean a group of 10 guys could share the same market account and share apps?

        • Quite possibly! I dunno what the limit is. The most I've tried is 4 devices simultaneously.

        • Technically yes, if they're fine with also sharing the same Google account between phones (ie. Chrome user settings, Gmail, Now, Maps information etc)

        • They don't have to - the phone will have their own individual gmail account like normal. They can then add another gmail account on top of that, and set it so nothing is synced. It will still work with the Play Store.

  • +7

Can I buy even without an Android phone? I wanna make a switch from iCrap, but not in the next 5 days

    • +1

See other discussions above, you should be able to but it is a bit unclear how at the moment.

      +ve for making the switch!

  • Does anyone know how much Office Suite Pro usually is?

    • +3

      When not on special: $14.99
But it's been on special before for 99c
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/69659

    • Anyone got anything good to say about it? At work so can't read up on it (but I can be on OzBargain…) Just need some quick advice, yea or nay?

      • Easy yes. Even at $0.99 it would be great value.

        • Fair enough. I bought it purely on your recommendation. Thanks :)

Edit: Just tried it out. Much better than Polaris and Docs To Go. Good stuff!

        • Yes, definitely worth the money! Still waiting for that ultimate document app though..
I still switch between the 3 as some don't do certain things I need e.g. columns, but OfficeSuite is my preferred choice.

  • After purchasing officesuite and opening it up, it gave me network error :/ and couldn't find the refund button..wasted 25c sigh

    • You can still get a refund by contacting Google however I would contact the developer so they can solve the problem, it is really worth 25c.

  • Is Tasks by team tasks any good? Better than the free Any.Do? Thanks in advance!

    • I was completely devoted to Any.Do until I found Tasks. The main difference is that instead of scrolling down to see the different categories, you swipe sideways.

There is a free one and it only has one small ad (so small and unobtrusive that I'm only buying the paid one to support the creator): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.teamtasks.t…

      • Do they app creators get paid the full amount during sales like this, or do they get 70% of the sale price?

        • +1

I'm guessing the sale price. I'm curious whether they are given the option to appear on sale or not?

        • I've been wondering this too.

        • -1

Of course they agree to the sale, it would be illegal otherwise - unless Google actually makes up the difference (to normal revenue from a sale) which I think is highly unlikely.

It has been discussed in the past that they sometimes make quite allot of money from those sales as they sell ALLOT of apps, even for 10c turns out to be allot of money.

      • Ok. Thanks. I'll give it a try.

    • +2

You should try GTasks - pretty much the same as Tasks but has MUCH better widgets :)

  • +1

If I buy an app online on the Play website for my HTC Legend, will i then be able to re-download it for free when i get an S3? It's just that it says "send to HTC legend" so i'm wondering when i get my S3, if it will give me the option to re-download it and send it to my s3?

    • +1

Yup, no problem. The app is tied to your account, not your phone.

      • Thank you! Is there a way of buying the app off the website, but NOT sending it automatically to the phone to download?

        • Hmm don't think so. Why not just send it to any phone and uninstall if not needed? Or cancel the installation on the phone when it starts.

        • I can do that but the phone has limited memory so it fills up fast.

        • +1

That shouldn't be a problem. Just let it install and fail (or cancel it before it completes). The purchase should have already gone through before that.

  • So it's only 14 apps that are on sale.
With so many positive votes i thought it was going to be a lot more than that.

    • +3

I'm fairly certain they'll have a new selection tomorrow.

    • Clouds & Sheep! Fun stuff.

      • What's the difference between the $0.25 version & the free version?
        https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hg.cloudsa…

        • Ads, mainly. The free one has a massive ad in the top left corner. Not overly annoying on a tablet, but kills me on my phone. Plus 1000 stars or something (pretty sure these are currency - I only play because I like flicking sheep up in the air and stuff…)

  • Is it just me or do the links for the Movies and Books not work? I can't find the sale for these items on GooglePlay store either?

    • The links are working fine on my Nexus 7.

      • Is this the link for movies?
        https://play.google.com/store/movies/collection/promotion_20…?

When I click it (on phone and on my desktop) it just says" We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server"

        • That kind of error usually appears for geographic 'region' based issues. Are you currently using a US or UK proxy/VPN? The link in the OP is specific to Oz as other countries actually have different deals. eg. the US have lots of deals on 'buy to own' movies (as opposed to just renting), something not enabled for Oz yet.

        • Aaaaaa, I use Unblock Us, which changes my DNS so I can access US based sites. I can access the Apps no problems. Weird as I have never had a region based issue before this. Not sure how to fix that…Thanks!

  • Is it possible to somehow purchase these apps without having an android device?

I don't have one yet, but have bought the note 2 and am expecting it next week - would be nice to get some cheap apps to start up, but it doesnt seem like it will let me unless i sign in on an android device

    • +1

This question has been asked several times in this thread, please see previous comments above

    • +1

Suggestions are in the OP. Try on BlueStacks if you're technically inclined! ;)

  • +3

Finger crossed for 25c Titanium Backup PRO
    Would be SWEEET

    • -4

      I can't find it for 25c

      • +17

You're not crossing your fingers hard enough. ;)

        • -2

          haha..cool! :)

  • Is no one tempted by the pottery app!

    • I got it

    • i got it too… its not a bad little time waster and keeps my 3 yr old occupied

  • +1

Anyone who purchases "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists by Neil Strauss" should get a free "DOUCHEBAG" wallpaper and ringtone.

  • True Crime and The Drop are both great reads.

  • AWESOME.
I bought the NFL Kicker Game, OfficeSuite, runTastic and rented "The Wrestler".
Really good deal and easy transactions.. this will tempt me to buy more from the play store in the future.

  • +1

Got Office Pro for my tablet. Have been waiting ages for it to go cheap!

  • Went to hire "2 days in Paris", but wasn't what I expected…

Best use of myTab until I can OzBargain a new Android phone :-)

    • +1

What, were you expecting it to be similar to "One Night in Paris?" :)

      Naughty, naught boy.

  • Great post got OfficeSuite Pro. What about the Asphalt Heat guys? Quite mix reviews ?? What do you think is a good movies to get?

    • Can't go too wrong with Pan's Labyrinth (subtitled), The Wrestler and Pulp Fiction I reckon. All Oscar winners, I think, or at the least nominees.

  • Weren't the books/movies $0.25 this morning too? did they jack up the price or was i blind/read too fast this morning? :(
