    Nice one, thank you.

  • Supposedly there is a new one coming out early next year, not sure whether to pull the trigger on this or just wait for that

    • +23

Is there anything you're hoping to see on the new one? If not, buy it now and enjoy it now. Life is short.

      • +1

Yep my 2022 4K 128 is flawless with tvos17. Can manage even the beefiest bitrates on plex direct play

        • HEVC? Atmos? I'm struggling with VLC playing Atmos sound-tracks…

I have Plex lifetime (thx Ozbargain), if you could shed some like on how to set up or a link (or two), that'd be AWESOME….TIA.

          • +5

            @SmartCover: Try out Infuse

          • +3

@SmartCover: No support for TrueHD Atmos found on UHD remuxes on Apple TV, only web based Dolby Digital + Atmos.

Also, no DTS support on Apple TV.

It will support H.265 but AV1 support with software decoding only.

You will run into banding / random stutter issues playing high bitrate 4k HDR/DV content using the native Plex app on Apple TV, Infuse is basically a requirement for issue free playback.

Honestly, if you want to be able to playback Plex content with Atmos grab a Shield Pro it really is the only solid option.

            • -2

@bobmonkey17: I assume you meant DTS:X, regular DTS will play via apps that decode it to PCM (like Infuse).

(Actually DTS:X and TrueHD Atmos will play but you'll lose the height information).

              • +1

@AdrianW: Right, it’s decoded, therefore not natively supported.

Just like TrueHD will play, but it’s not Atmos.

      • +1

Probably better upscaling and better processor (for longevity), I think I’m gonna wait. It is tempting at this price but I’d prefer to just spend the extra on the new one and have it last longer I think.

        • +5

good strategy assuming you also last

        • Hardware support for AV1 as well.

      • That's what I thought when buying the 2021 version. Then along comes the 2022 with HDR10+.

      • My guess is we’ll see a model with an A17 Pro chip in it, given Apple drew focus on gaming at the iPhone keynote and the titles they focused on are limited to iPhone 15 Pro models, or M1 Macs. Makes sense to me that they’d want those Resident Evil titles available on Apple TV, and frankly without gaming the processor and storage of the Apple TV is way beyond where it needs to be.

There was rumour of an attempt to also hit a lower price level. If they do that I’d probably expect them to drop the price of the current WiFi model and leave it’s specs alone, then have a higher end A17 Pro model with more gaming capability + Ethernet on the upper end.

Just my guess anyway, but something like Rwsident Evil on an Apple TV makes more sense to me than playing on an iPhone. Does put them in competition with console makers but.

    • Pull the trigger ? Why don't you buy it , it's easier !

    • My guess is the next one will focus on a more powerful chip that focuses on gaming (just as with the new iPhones, one of the key selling points). AAA gaming on the next Apple TV with limited ray-tracing possible etc.

10% off code also works on Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen $310.50 (last year model and for those who missed out this morning via eBay Plus Tuesdays), renewed Apple products

    • Can you share the code?

    • Interesting how it doesn't work on the AirPods Pro with USB-C

      • use wireless charger I never used lightning port for last 2 years of my apple devices

  • Thanks! Very nice price.

  • I'll buy one. Thought about buying two, but maybe I'll wait for the update next year for the kitchen TV.

      How about bathroom? lol

If you watch YT, cheap Netflix and your own files you might prefer the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro.

The AI upscaling is very impressive and can do it on live tv (been watching the cricket in 4K).

Have owned both and stuck with the NVIDIA but Apple was great as well, just without the upscaling quality.

    • +4

I’ve also owned both and found the Apple TV far superior. The shield just ends up lagging and glitching like all android products. And the UI isn’t as pretty and reliable as tvOS.

      • -5

        Someone's biased :)

      • +3

Yeah I agree. I want a device anyone in the family or visiting friends can use, not some geeked up thing that only I will ever know how to properly work.

        • +2

It's really not as complicated as you make it sound, but each to their own.

          • +3

@SonOfATightASS: If my 9yr olds can use it for the past 3 years, cant be that hard. Does glitch out a few times a year, but thats about it, havent seen any lagging thou, this is from the first gen sheild too.

        • Lol, the Google TV and Apple TV are about the same in terms of usability.

The Apple TV experience is more polished but it is also far more expensive.

          • @ihfree:

The Apple TV experience is more polished but it is also far more expensive.

Chromecast with Google TV, yeah, the original comment was talking about the Shield TV Pro (2019) though, which goes for more than the full price of the 128GB Apple TV 4K even when it's on sale.

      • +1

Shield can look better with a custom launcher. FLauncher is the one I use. I don’t find it laggy. Much better than the Mi Box S I had before it.

Shield is great for more app options: Kodi, Stremio etc. If you only use legit streaming services Apple is probably a better way to go.

      • +3

I’m going to agree with you there.

I own two NVIDIA Shield TV Pros (2019) and also a 1st Gen Apple TV 4K (2017). Both Shields have randomly crashed/frozen on several occasions, have been intermittently laggy and the default launcher pushes ads in your face. Meanwhile despite its flaws of not supporting TrueHD Atmos, the Apple TV has been stable and reliable.

NVIDIA’s AI upscaling is also highly overrated.

    • The shield YouTube app does not support 4k HDR and DV on nvidia shield Apple TV does.

      • it supports. it is an android app by google always up to date.

        • No it doesn’t. I own a NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019 - latest model) unit and it doesn’t support 4K HDR on YouTube. I bought it knowing full well it doesn’t.

          • +1

@skittlebrau: I have my own too. I have 4k OLED 120hz TV but can't see any differences from native tv app or apple tv.

            • @javawoo: as with me I have a sony a90k oled and a YT premium Account… when you go to picture settings on the inbuilt google tv it only gives a max of 2160p60… same with on the Nvidia shield 2160p60… on apple TV it gives you "2160p60HDR"…. thus anything in the YT app on shield and/or google TV will NOT be in HDR. also there is even differences between the rendering of the PQ in the Google TV YT app vs shield and other streaming boxes…. check out this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmc4rupKJ9s check out the interface section…. ANDROID fragmentation hits again an OS on a lot of TV's and the Developer needs to write an app that works withas many tvs in mind…

  • are there any benefits going for the 128gb other than ethernet and apple arcade/games?

    • Possibly the extra storage will give you more buffering space, especially after you've filled some of it with games and stuff? I can't confirm this is the case but I got the 128GB one for that reason just in case. Also might use the ethernet one day, or whoever I end up giving it to years from now might use it.

    • +1

Ethernet one also has matter capability which will be useful for HomeKit/smart home stuff if that is important

    • +2

There is a significant difference between the 64gb and the 128gb if you are planning on using an Apple TV as a HomeKit hub. The 64gb does not support Thread, whereas the 128gb does. Also, the 64gb is wifi only, the 128 supports Ethernet

      • My HomePod mini keeps defaulting as home hub despite the ATV’s being hard wired ethernet and arguably a more reliable device

  • Ugh just bought this 2 days ago for $221.35 at OW (via price beat).

    • Return it, though it is only 20 bucks.

      • Yeah that's what I figure – probably not worth my time/effort!

  • does this support vpn apps?

    • Yes

    • With recent update yes, however not many VPNs offer it yet. PureVPN is one of the ones that offers it and had 130% cashback on recent deals via shopback.

      • would a certain site work on it using the browser? 123movies?
ideally i want it to have a browser with a pop up blocker, that can access these streaming sites. then ill buy it
Edit: i just searched it up and apple tv does not even have a browser, i think one of those little intel mini PC boxes is the way to go..

  • I’m thinking of getting one but seems like this doesn’t come with a HDMI cable and it needs to be purchased separately?

    • correct

    • You are already looking in an Apple TV which is 3x more expensive than android ones like chromecast, but stopped because a $10 cable?

      • +1

Can you please provide a link to a $10 Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that’s suitable for 4K HDR?

        • +2

Any HDMI 2.0 cable will be fine, this one is 10.99 for 2m

          https://amzn.asia/d/6xgXQPs

HDMI 2.1 needed for 4K 120hz for gaming etc

          • @Gmetal: The Officeworks Keji ones work really well too…

          • @Gmetal: ty for reminding me I need 2.1 for 120hz tv

          • @Gmetal: Hope theres new apple tv on 30 oct apple event with hdmi 2.1

  • I think Apple TV can be downloaded as an app on lg oled’s now

    • +4

Not the same thing, you are thinking of Apple TV+

  • -2

I still can’t figure out the appeal of this 😅 my LG tv watches Netflix and YT perfectly fine. The only thing is NBA I need to fast but that’s so easy to do.

    • +2

some tvs are dumb, some tvs are slow

      • +7

most tvs are dumb, most tvs are slow

    • If you have other Apple devices the integration is great.
I have a headless mac mini that acts as my iTunes server.
In 20 minutes I can have a new release HD Blu-ray rip downloaded and into my library with all the meta data, artwork etc and ready to watch on the Apple TV.
It would be quicker if I had better than 20/10 internet.

    • Not all apps are the same. If you care about picture quality. From one google tv to another google tv the PQ is different. From one Apple TV to Apple TV the YT app is the same. Lots of google tv YouTube apps won’t show YouTube 4K HDR or DV

    • TV UIs are the worst.

      • not mine LG UI, fast and reliable….lmao i dont know which potatoes negged me but that's my experience anyway

  • Used to have one, I travel a lot and hotel WiFi’s wouldn’t let me connect (needed landing page/web browser) Have they fixed that issue?

  • +1

Apple TV now has FaceTime (using your iPhone as a camera) and allows VPN.

    • This is main reason I bought it.

    • Allows VPN? Bloody Apple should have never blocked it.

  • +1

Picked one up a while ago to replace a Google TV. I mainly wanted to get rid of ads for commercial TV in Australia and I couldn't be bothered messing around to get rid of it.

It's been pretty solid. The main issue is the remote seems to lose ability to control the soundbar.

    • How did you get rid of ads for FTA?

      • ahh sorry - just banner ads

  • +1

I love the UI would love to move back to one but not being able to play my files in True HD / generally missing some codecs is a deal breaker

  • Thanks op got one

  • Recently bought 128gb model. Pretty sure it came with a short hdmi.
The UI is of course very nice, but very “Apple” , in thatb the home screen is just apps, only needs 1-2 clicks to get to show listings , but I sort of miss the google tv style layout,

Appletv Has a few unique tricks, Facetime on big screen is pretty good, apple arcade is also great for simple gaming, being playing a lot of the local multiplayer titles.
Combining phone camera with apple music karoke mode has also been a family hit.

Been using infuse to play movies off network and its pretty slick, yearly pricing but very reasonable , like 2 bucks a month or something. can also be setup to search and play downloads directly from real-debrid , haven’t tried it yet though.
Also keen to try it out with airipods bought from todays deal.

Some things missing… VPN selection is pretty limited if youre wanting to run it directly off appletv. Im guessing this will improve as more apps are released. Kodi not available and mrmc doesnt allow addons now, so no adfree local tv 😞.
Miss the upscaling and sideloading of the nvidia shield. Almost thinking of switching between the two as i need , though that seems a bit painful.

    • You are meant to use the ATV app and find the shows from there. You build a library, connect your streaming services and see your up nexts. The ATV app should be at the top row. It will show up with “up next” seamlessly on the top of the screen when you are hovering over it.

Once that is done you simply say… “Watch The Simpsons” and it goes to The Simpsons, continuing from the Up Next queue from the ATV app, and opens Disney+, and plays the episode. Then you want to watch Bones you say “Continue watching TV show Bones”. Absolutely no UI is involved just simple voice commands.

      • ok thanks, i diid realise the tv+ plus app lists shows , but it seemed like not a lot of apps were feeding it info, but i might need to investigate things more.
        I

      • +1

The ATV app doesn’t support everything however. Might be some services missing entirely, and a big one to note is that Netflix will only have results for “Netflix originals”, not licensed content. Unsure if overseas services that you may bring in, like Hulu, would show up if the local region is set to AU also. No integration with Kayo, although that’s fairly specific use case anyway.

        https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT205321

It’s pretty good but probably worth understanding whether a service you use is being omitted or to only expect a subset of the content.

        • +1

Overseas apps only show in the Apple TV app continue row when logged in for the region with that app, does not show in Apple TV app when logged in the Aus region. Would be great if it appeared regardless of region but understandable that it doesn’t.

          • @ducksmad: Yeah, not unexpected.

Apple TVs handling of multiple accounts isn’t as streamlined as one may like, or tied to third party apps. When searching for content that appears in say Disney+ from the Apple TV app, we often have the redirect to the Disney app fail because a child’s account was the last one to use Disney+ and what we are searching for isn’t available to them.

Would love some sort of solution that’d tie streaming service accounts to the Apple TV account, and for Apple TV to be able to more quickly identify who the user was. For all its failings, Xbox One’s Kinect knowing who was holding a controller and being able to switch to the right user account was always neat. I’d be keen to see Apple try something similar using proximity of an Apple Watch or iPhone to guess who is holding a Siri Remote.

            • @Smigit: Try Just Watch app in the meantime. I use that to find shows or movies and can choose different countries to check where it’s available.

              • @Pricebeat: I’ll have a look at that service. I usually just Google “where to stream X” and have an answer in the first result.

            • @Smigit: Tying Apple Id profiles to streaming app profiles seems like a no brainer feature.

  • Just in time too, I have been using the older AppleTV HD on a 1080 TV in the bedroom and was pondering how it's been getting a little slow and clunky with some video.
Is it WiFi? Is it that particular media? Plex? All I know is that it doesn't seem to happen on the 2nd gen unit I have in the lounge room.

Figured I'd grab the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Ethernet version for the main TV and shuffle the older 2nd gen model down a peg, then this shows up.
To be honest, I first searched around for deals through other sources before calling myself an idiot and remembering I should have just searched here first. BAM, $50 discount. Sorted.

  • yeah got the 128gb model love it still doesnt' let you download movies from you itunes library it seems to do that automatically when you start watching a movie, I wish they had an option for downloading movies you want to have stored locally.
