New Slim PlayStation 3 12GB - $232 +Shipping

170

eSold seem to have a good deal on the new PS3 12GB at $232. Shipping cost $9.95 to metro Sydney, don't know how much it is to other areas (hard to tell from the site).

Don't know when the deal will expire, possibly tomorrow morning.

Peace

  • Great price!

Good price but if you don't mind picking up, I think it's probably worth the $7 more to buy from Kmart so you have a store to take it back to for warranty.

So it's not a typo - it really is 12GB.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a HDD, since 12GB won't be enough for some game installs.

This new look PS3 is bad. Not only does it look cheaply produced, it costs more than the current slim.

    • So…$232 is now more expensive than $348?

      • +1

I'm talking about RRP, or MSRP. Sales don't count, since the current model can have sales too.

Do not forget that the $348 includes a HDD, while the $232 does not. And you need a HDD, since some games have mandatory installs. 12GB will not be enough. You also won't be able to download much from the store, which locks you out of half the things you can do on the system. Some of that 12GB will also be taken up by the OS.

I agree but Sony have officially confirmed no RRP for the new Slim PS3, it's why everyone is scrambling with 'sales' or package deals. Basically you will permanently see it cheaper than what Sony suggests.

HDDs are almost neglible, by now most people have a HDD laying around waiting to be thrown out or can be had for $30 for a 160gb.

        • Sony announced the $299 RRP for the 12Gb unit ages ago.

I agree that $299 with no hdd is silly given the older unit was cheaper as an everyday non sale item.

At this rate I see it as $199 at xmas given that it is a very cut down unit. And scab a 2.5 hdd from a discarded laptop and away you go.

        • It's really technical, but the $299 is not RRP it's a suggested price. And as I mentioned it's why you see the prices from $249 at KMart to as low as this $232 + ship price.

The RRP of this 12gb model is $50 less than the RRP of the 160gb slim. Get your facts straight.

        • that means very very little when they were $250-$280 in the real world…

They have confirmed pricing.. they confirmed it at the TGS keynote when it was unveiled.

          Flash Memory 12GB - 229 Euros, AUD $299.95, NZD $399.95 - October 12th (September 27th AU, October 18th NZ)

          500GB - 299 Euros, AUD $399.95, NZD $519.95 - September 28th (September 27th ANZ)

In the US, the 12GB flash model is actually $20 more expensive than the HDD'd current Slims. The 500GB is a lot more expensive.

HDDs are almost neglible, by now most people have a HDD laying around waiting to be thrown out or can be had for $30 for a 160gb.

Not sure if your pricing is for 3.5" or 2.5". It has to be a 2.5". I wasn't aware they still sell 160GB drives.

My problem with the new look PS3 is that it looks cheap as crap. If you're going to make something with cheap looking plastic, it needs to be priced accordingly, that means substantially cheaper than what's out there right now, not same price or a bit more. Where did the money saved from their cost cutting go? Into their own pockets? Thanks but no thanks.

  • Almost the same price as this PS3 320gb Slim..

On the bright side, it didn't take long for the console to drop so far in price.
I'm sure we'll see this console actually cheaper than the slim has been at some point.

  • I'm sure I missed it, but what was Sony's thinking/reasoning behind a 12GB SSD? It is SSD, right?

The main thing I don't like about it is the sliding door, which means I can't shove in an entertainment unit without a lot of head room.

    • I'm sure I missed it, but what was Sony's thinking/reasoning behind a 12GB SSD?

Cost cutting to increase profitability it seems. Normally when a new refresh is released which costs less to make, it means a price drop so the consumer saves some money, not the manufacturer.

      It is SSD, right?

I would hope it's SSD. That's the only type of flash memory that isn't slow as hell. Imagine installing a game at 6MB/s USB stick speeds, LOL.
