It is a quality little device.
I also love how the 3d printing community has some cool options for it.

    • +4

Don't just tease us with that. Any recommendations?

      • +2

Haha sorry biz. I have seen new face buttons, improved trigger buttons and a grip that the unit slots into.
Google the model number and .stl and you will see a heap.
Edit: I will likely print the grip and rear buttons, especially as the rear buttons are level and the improved ones are staggered so your fingers lay on the more naturally.

      • I just printed (resin) this for my Miyoo. It's awesome, so much more comfortable to play on.

        https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6061286

        • That looks really cool. What sort of 3d printer do you have?

          • +1

@Last Seen: Elegoo Saturn 3. Printed with with Siraya Fast resin. I think ideally it would be better with something with a touch more flex, like Blu but so far so good.

            • @jaymzrsa: Looks cool but might defeat the purpose of the portability of the device!

My biggest gripe with my MM+ is that I actually want something with a bigger screen and I think I like the horizontal form factor better. Waiting for a 405M price drop or considering the powkiddy rk2023 (switching to arkos) which I saw dropped under $100 the other day

  • +6

I have one and it's pretty good.

    GarlicOS 2.0 coming soon apparently.

Also, R36S I just bought with the 11.11 sales for $73 delivered to Western Australia. A good alternative too.

    • +2

Thinking of getting one of these or similar to give as a Christmas present.
Is this the best option under $100 or plenty of time to wait for something else?

      • +3

R36s is considered to be a better option of the Miyoo Mini+ or RG35xx.

However I'd probably order now with these sales, as I don't know how many more chances you'll get before Xmas lands.

      • -1

Highly recommend for gifts. But install MinUI for them rather than GarlicOS. Simple and easy to use.

      • See above. If you want horizontal form factor under $100 look at Powkiddy Rk2023

    • +1

which aliexpress link you used to buy the r36s?

      • +2

just got the r36s for $65.34 delivered

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006152991376.html?spm=a2…

        thanks for the advice @adrianhughes1998

        • No worries let's buy all the models up! But not XU10…

          • +1

@adrianhughes1998: Also ended up getting a SF2000 for $25 delivered, very cheap for what it is.

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005634977936.html

            • @closed: Very nice, bit too many compromises for me but you're right for the price can't be beat!

Tempted to get a RGB30 as well but let's see…

              • @adrianhughes1998: Agree, these ones are for kids presents so they don't break my R36s.

The R36s hasn't arrived but already started looking at what the next step up would be and I kept getting to the $200+ models and gave up. The Anbernic RG505 might be the next one to buy but $200 isn't a cheap impulse buy for me. I did look at the RGB30 but the build quality and support worries me after reading Reddit threads about it.

                • +1

@closed: Same. Once something gets over $150-200 I just think I should bite the bullet and just get an Odin 2 @ $500.

Then I think if I am doing that I should just buy a Ally or Legion Go @ sub $1,000 when they go on sale.

Then I stare at my gaming laptop, switch OLED and Miyoo Mini + I barely use and go back to watching more emulation reviews on YouTube…..

                  • @serpserpserp: haha, I use my gaming laptop to buy these awesome deals but rarely to play actual games. Got an Xbox a few days ago with all the deals but am more excited about the emulators if I'm honest.

        • Is this including get? 72 for me Inc gst

    • Got a link for the R36S?

    • This or the R36s is better?

      • +1

I'd be inclined to try the R36S. The brand isn't as reputable but it's had pretty solid reviews and you'll have more options for systems.

  • Have one of these and love it. Just got a RG353PS plus a case for $112 from Ali.

  • +13

Search archive.org for "tiny best set go" for ready made games, all setup for different SD card sizes

    • +2

archive.org - everyone should have that bookmarked.

      • How doesn't it get shut down

    • I've been looking for something like this for ages! Ty vm :)

    • And GitHub for the custom OS's. Spent more time on archive.org and GitHub in the last year than I should probably share

      • +1

Lmao depends which field you work in!

  • I have one and the volume is stuck on maximum.

  • I think miyoo mini plus is a way better performing device and daily needs.

    • +3

It's not way better, they're about equal.
However given the option, I'd recommend the Miyoo Mini+ between the two.

And instead of either, I would recommend the Anbernic RG 353m. It's slightly more pocketable, but slightly more ergonomic, and has some extra/better features. Remember these are all in the pocketable category, they aren't competing against the NSwitch, iPad, or like devices that are "portable". And you can also step down a category into the "keyring" category but you give up a lot for that transversal.

The best in this pocketable category is currently the Retroid Pocket 3+ but it's a bit "old" now. We should see it's successor the 2024 Retroid Pocket 5 (tetraphobia) in the next few months.

      • Are they seriously skipping the RP4? Anyway yeah this handheld market is pumping out new devices every week. Hopefully things keep evolving at this quick pace. I'm excited to see if we can start seeing RK3588S devices soon. Should be a significant step up from current devices like the RP3+.

        • +1

There's a good chance they will skip calling it the "RP4" and they will instead call it the "RP5" or maybe instead as the "RP3S".

Retroid is based in China, but the original crew (Team Go-Retroid) is international based and used to cater to the niche globally. The company that owns AYN has also acquired Retroid company. They were acquired around the time the RP2+ launched, so the kerfuffle of the RP3 is blamed mostly on AYN. I think overall AYN has benefited most from the acquisition, but it has meant that Retroid itself can survive in the market against rivals like Anbernic, PowKiddy, Miyoo, GameForce, Trimui, and the like.

          • @Kangal: Oh OK that's interesting info. I hope that whatever they call it Retroid keep setting the bar for affordable emulation consoles. Their designs, build quality and price-to-performance are probably the best in the market. I just got an Anbernic RG505 instead of the RP3+ because in the end it only cost me US$120 on sale, whereas the Retroid 3+ was gonna be US$150.

    • +4

So to summarise the pocketable category:
      -Anbernic RG 533m (smallest)
      -PowKiddy RGB 30 (cheapest)
      -Miyoo Mini+ (best value)
      -Retroid Pocket 2S (best pocketable)
      -Retroid Pocket 3+ (largest)

If you're interested in the "portable" category, which means the device is mostly for indoor use, and requires a backpack for travel. Well there are a couple great options such as the:
      -GPD Win Mini (smallest)
      -AYN Odin2 (best value ARM-based)
      -Valve SteamDeck New/OLED (cheapest x86)
-ASUS ROG Ally (best value x86)
-GPD Win Max 3 (best portable overall)

-Lenovo Legion Go (not yet decided/reviewed)

Get a kids learning tower from Kmart, one of this, an old 16:9 monitor, a random joystick and bunch of cables you get a low budget arcade machine!

  • +2

Good price this. I'm waiting for a real discount on the 405M. Just like the form factor and slight increase in power better.

    • Me too, I've dm'ed a few reps and there might be a deal soon I'm told!

  • +4

I like how its part of singles day

    Thats triggering

    • Comparing different models and prices I noticed 'Children's Gift' in titles a lot, I was more triggered by that.

  • +1

I've bought the 351v when Hakka had a deal here, didn't think I'd use it. But it lives by the bed side table and love it. Might do the same with this one. Thanks op

  • Love my one of these. So many great childhood memories.

  • Can any of these type of units play multiplayer games like mariokart?

    • You'll want the Miyoo Mini Plus with WiFi if plan on doing multiplayer.

      • Any other recommendations please? Looking for a hogher end device that supports multiplayer

  • +1

I'm new to this but looks like Garlic OS is specific to RG35XX. I bought the R36S as I prefer to have the sticks but looks like this is a whole other OS I need. From a quick search maybe something called ArkOS is what I need?

    Any advice?

    • +2

That's the one. Search Google and it will come up with GitHub for Christian or the Dev who does it. That's the update for the latest arkos cos the one preinstalled is a year old

  • These and other handheld retro consoles are just getting better every year.

I've got a diff model but still works great for what I want it to emulate and with custom firmware from the community, it just adds that extra element of what it can do.

  • Is there a similar product with analog controls? I really like this kind of form factor.

    • The 351v is similar but with an analogue stick. It is only 1 though. However, you're rarely going to need more than 1 given the power limitations which will limit your emulation to psx and n64 at max.

  • I have nearly bought a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus a couple of times recently but I really want Gamecube and PS2 emulation to be a little better before I pull the trigger - hopefully the next unit will have it. Then it will be an easy purchase

  • +14

You could hold an archive of games on this! Might be anecdotal but I think these are the best way to organize your legally-owned retro games.
These are tiny, the best for playing retro games, and easy to setup: Go! Get one! :)

  • I had a Retroid Pocket 2 that I sold because the controls were too spongy. How are the controls on these?

  • This one or Analogue pocket?

    • +1

Good luck finding/buying an Analogue Pocket.

  • Anyone know what size MicroSD is supported?

    • +1

      I am using a 256gb

      • Ta, that should be plenty for me

  • Far out boys. Charged off my credit card via paypal but aliexpress says "expired" closed for security reasons.

Some rubbish about using the coupons.

But you get charged so how you gonna try the coupon works without getting charged each time? Aliexpress says up to 20 business days for the refund

    • tried again no coupons with a different seller but same thing. Whats the story

  • might seem like a noob question, seems the hand held market is alive again and you don’t need to buy a PSP and special memory card ? last time i looked at this stuff was 10 years ago for my son ?

still have backups of toms for various platforms so now they just load and no special memory card needed ?

    • These devices generally run off micro SD cards. Some have some internal memory, but I don't think the RG35XX does.

      • so which is best unit, e.g screen and support wise ?

        • As always, the answer is 'depends'.

What do you want out of a handheld? What systems do you want it to play? Controls? Screen size?

Anbernic models are generally decent enough and I think their support is solid enough for these companies. In saying that, you're dealing with small Chinese companies so it can be difficult. I've never had any issues with my devices though.

          • @Orion au: screen quality and size would be first priority, long term support isn’t an issue once games are loaded.
