Hmmmm. Can early users (if any) comment on their experience with the Go?

Just from elsewhere on the interwebs, seems most folks prefer Ally and the most I see pointed out being the better (apparently much better)speakers, allegedly better ergonomics, and the vrr implemetation which feels much smoother than the go's screen.

Go does have the better technical specs with the faster ram for the igpu and the screen and the removable controllers. And this sale is a bit tempting.

    • Not a user but I've read very positive reviews and seems to be a lot of enthusiasm around the experience.

    • I'm also interested in feedback; in particular the weight of the Go is a bit of a concern. It's 200g heavier than the Ally, and basically double the weight of the Switch. Not sure how that'd go for long trips (e.g. 1hr train ride).

I have the Steam Deck and the Go. I have played the Ally for a bit, but I don't own it.

For ergonomics, the Go is comfortable in hand (I have large hands) but it's heavier. Heavier than the Steam Deck. Much heavier than the Ally. I got used to it pretty quick, but it's not comfortable for long gaming sessions.

Regarding VRR, I'm extremely fussy about tearing. But I have never noticed tearing on the Go. If you run at 144hz, any tearing is imperceptible. Smoothness is another thing. The 144hz should also avoid any smoothness issues, but I haven't tested it against the Ally side by side so can't say for sure.

Speakers are not terrible, but worse than the Steam Deck speakers. Definitely better using headphones.

I'm glad I went the Go over the Ally due to the larger screen (can't go back to my Steam Deck after playing on this screen), and the detachable controllers mostly negate the weight issue for me.

Honestly, I would say it comes down to weight more than anything. If you want a lighter device and don't mind not having the larger screen and detachable controllers, then pick up the Ally. Performance wise there isn't much difference.

        tldr: get buff. get go

          Now that's how you market

      • What's battery life like for the Go versus the Steam Deck? To me that's the biggest concern.

        • +2

Seems about the same to me. The big difference is that Steam Deck handles the TDP automatically. With the Go you have to select the TDP yourself. It's very easy to change and the power button lights up a different colour depending on what you have it set to. But if you are playing a low powered game and you forget to lower your TDP, then your battery won't last very long.

      • Thanks! Reckon i will wait for an ally sale then. My hands are tiny :/

    • I'm not happy with the software, it's abysmal. Plethora of things missing, drivers being months old, bugs everywhere.

Im returning my unit soon because I don't have faith they'll be able to get things to where they should be anytime soon.

When it works it works, but if you are in any way an enthusiast or power user and want to change anything, you're shit out of luck. If you play beyond triple A titles and want to do more than a basic user, be prepared to spend time debugging and getting shit to work.

Coming from steam deck since the first batch to both the ally and go, windows is just not a good platform to have a handheld on.

The hardware performance and specs don't drive the usability of it as far as people think once they've tried what's on the market, which is why the refreshed OLED deck should bridge the gap for a while longer imo.

Having nearly every handheld at some point… The best resolution is still 800p, and the best input system is still steam input, and the best experience is still the steam deck imo.

Lenovo website says take 10% off if paying via ZIP or Latitude (both only for selected products and need to chat with agent) and so wonder if that stacks with shopback deal.

    • No i think you must pay through the credit card option when selecting the payment method at the Lenovo store checkout. Selecting any other payment method would void the cashback since it tracks the payment and merchant through the Westpac card. It would have to show that it was purchased directly from Lenovo through the card. Shopback is linked directly to the card and the merchant, it isn't linked to ZIP.

      • Cheers.

Would the 10% newsletter sign up void the cashback?

        • If it's a promo discount code supplied by Lenovo itself to be used through the store checkout then yes it should. It's listed on the terms i see from here. Have a look all the terms are listed.

"Cashback will stack with any official Promo/Discount Code listed on the Lenovo website, regardless of it being listed on the ShopBack merchant page."

  • Isn't the cashback capped at $250?

    • Yes that’s why it comes down to $1099 if you also use Westpac card otherwise it would be cheaper if it wasn’t capped

      • Oh you need both, I see

        • You don’t need both but if you wanna get the extra discount yer you do

  • What would the process of taking advantage of this look like for someone who doesn't currently bank with westpac? Too much of a hassle?

    • Pretty sure you can sign up and have a westpac account within 10 minutes and it'll give you an online card to use until your real card arrives, also a lot of eligibility criteria for no fees.

  • Does anyone know if the Lenovo Go is capable of running Photoshop well? Just curious.

I wouldn't recommend it. It only has 16gb of ram and that's also shared with the graphics card. So you have 16gb total for graphics and ram. The default is 3gb vram and 13gb ram. 13gb isn't enough to drive photoshop well. Plus the CPU is designed for gaming. You would be better off with a decent quality PC or laptop.

      • Thanks, I'm waiting to see a video or someone's review on it from the information I've seen on it it might actually just be able to run it for my needs as I only do simple shirt designs. I'd be gaming on it 90% of the time but also wondering now if it can run VR decently too. Love the idea of these new handhelds especially the Go but might have to wait another generation or two to get what I'm after.

Yeah if you dock you can have a decent experience.

If you're using this as a ps machine, I'm assuming you're not doing anything crazy in which case you'll be fine, but as a professional I'd steer away.
