@spaceflight: I do enjoy it very much it is very snappy thank you, and snappier than android phones

@abctoz: I have never made a direct Apple vs Android comparison.

I have only been pointing out how flawed your benchmarking argument is that CPU is all that matters.

I even said that you can "Ignore all the advancements and features on the latest Apple and Android phones then." (I made it bold to help you out)

Because both are more advanced than a 2020 iPhone.

                              You…

continue to be emotional and in denial at how shit their hardware, that’s ok Darwinism at its best

He won't care about RAM, Screen Size, Brightness, Wireless Charger, etc. He can keep on enjoying his TINY LCD Screen and the most amazing pictures on the AI enabled single lens camera with low pixel counts (so fast so fast so fast…..) taken with his "used" iPhone SE.

Very valuable for people who sit around running geekbench all day.

But it's not indicative of actual performance.

Apparently even in cpu demanding games (really the only time you are giving your phone a workout nowadays) the performance is within margin of error with the iphone 14 pro max. Last I checked, geekbench is cpu only too, so best case scenario for the benchmark

      https://youtu.be/rivtFBl2h8w?si=UBokQZ3dLiIMTPF3&t=713

      • -7

that looks like gpu performance to me

I’m talking about cpu performance don’t game in my phone

        • +5

If you clicked on the video, he says it's more cpu intensive and gpu is under utilised.

What are you doing with your phone's? Are you actually sitting around running geekbench all day

@Butt Scratcher: argue with ppl on ozbargain

            scroll twitter
            lose money with trading apps

            you know the usual

You can use the site I posted above and you will find the iPhone wins pretty much all web benchmarks

We’re talking a 400 iPhone here vs this “flagship”, latest gen even faster

          • @Butt Scratcher: That and shining his performance crown.

        • I’m talking about cpu performance don’t game in my phone

Do you take photos, watch videos, use your screen.

Lots of things are reliant on the GPU to give you a good experience. It isn't just there for gaming.

          • -1

@spaceflight: all the things you listed is dependent on cpu performance

Might I suggest you read up how basic computing works before you attempt to debate this topic

            • @abctoz:

all the things you listed is dependent on cpu performance

              Really?

              Do you take photos

This uses the camera, which we have established is poor
              It
Also uses the GPU, not CPU.
              Don't believe me

Apple’s new 6-core GPU powers higher-resolution images via a 48-megapixel, 7-lens camera. This processing power delivers the best camera photos and video using computational photography

              www.forbes.com/sites/timbajarin/2023/09/13/is-the-new-iphone…

              watch videos

Which uses GPU not CPU because isn't the GPU is much more efficient

              use your screen.

Has nothing to do with the CPU.
The CPU cannot change the DPI or brightness of a screen (neither can the GPU)
              That's the physical screen hardware.

Might I suggest you read up how basic computing works before you attempt to debate this topic

              • @spaceflight: you do realize it take cpu processing power to encode and decode your photos

like it’s ok not everybody is an expert in everything, I just happen to like comparing computing performance, I think honestly you are out of your league here

                • @abctoz:

you do realize it take cpu processing power to encode and decode your photos

It's clear you have no idea what you are talking about and no understanding of the importance of things beyond a CPU.

I think honestly you are out of your league here

There is no league here, just someone who has no idea how things work apart from " bigger CPU must be better"

                  • @spaceflight: you literally had no concept that you had to encode and decide photos from you camera

this is why apple phones are snappier when taking photos fyi

                    • @abctoz:

you literally had no concept that you had to encode and decide photos from you camera

Hate to break it to you, but that's handled by the GPU (though I have already said that)

The GPU also handles things such as panning, scrolling, app transitions, window swapping, zooming and so on.

this is why apple phones are snappier when taking photos fyi

                      No it's not.
Apple deliberatey sets up their phones so that photos are taken at what the phone hardware can process without feeling laggy.

The iPhone could take better photos than the default but Apple prioritises experience over the photo quality.
You can just set an Android phone to lower quality if you want a snappier feeling and really need that 0.2 millisecond advantage after pressing the shutter button.

This is why even though the latest iPhone has a 48 MP camera sensor it only uses 24 MP

                      • @spaceflight: GPUs handle photo encoding and decoding guys

                        You heard it here first

    • +1

Even the > $2500 latest iPhone is inferior to the S23 Ultra in FUNCTIONALITY (no productivity S-Pen, 200MP lens, 8K video, multi-windows, DEX laptop style, non-limited O/S..).
But the S24 Ultra is coming in 2 months to make the iPhones irrelevant.

      • No crowns for functionality unfortunately. Performance only.

      • -5

my $200 iPhone has all the functionality I need

Will the s24 ultra will finally be able to beat a $400 iPhone in performance?

or are we waiting another year, I love waiting

      • no productivity S-Pen

I have sat with people that have those productivity pens and they still use a notebook and a pen to write with.

        200MP lens

        A lens doesn't have a megapixel rating

  • Does the 500 dollar bonus gift card last? I have galaxy watch 5 I don't mind trading in for and I'll use it on a pixel 8 or asus zenfone 10 when they go on discount.

    • +2

It is not bonus gift card but a coupon that only works on S23 Ultra.

      JB HiFi Terms & Conditions

Campaign Go live: 12 October 2023
      Campaign: 12/10/23 - 19/11/23
      Redeemable end date: 19/11/23 11:59pm

      • Oh ok. Thanks. That's far less interesting then lol.

        Appreciate your help.

      • How many coupons can I use on a single s23 ultra purchase?

        • Nvm answer below

  • I'm sorry if it's been asked but does anyone know if I can trade in 2 devices and use 2 bonus $500 vouchers? Or even 3?

    • +2

No, the $500 coupon is not stackable with another coupon

    • Yes, you can upto 10 devices and JB will give you cash for the excess

    • +1

You can get as many bonus $500 vouchers as eligible devices, but you cannot use 2 x $500 vouchers in 1 transaction.

  • can I do all of the above in store?

Also can I return my old phone to a physical store?

    • +2

You can purchase in store, just make sure you have the coupon barcode (emailed to you) and trade in gift card (if you are going to trade in the device) ready.

You have to mail the phone in, phone trade in is via squareTradUp, a different company to JB.

  • Should I trade in Pixel 8 Pro 256G for this deal?
    $500 trade in bonus + Pixel credit $990 = $1490.
My pixel often get heated and the camera focus is slow (sometimes it takes 5-10 sec).

    • +3

Yes. 8 Pro is plagued with so many issues only the Pixel fanboys turn a blind eye on.

S23 Ultra is superior in almost every single way.

      • Thank you for your thoughts!

I started using pixel 8 pro for 1 month and have been with this issue with camera slow focus, quite annoying! I have never had the same issue with many other phones I used in the past.

    • Yeah this is what I want to do.

      • Do you also have a pixel 8 pro with issues?

        • The heating is bad, has issues running Pokemon go, camera AI is honestly the only thing I like about it.

          • @killabob: Just went the other way, Samsung has great hardware but the camera shutter lag and photo quality is still crap like since s20.

For camera pixel wins but everything else s23 ultra

But no curved display is a big win too.

            • @badonde: would you be up for sharing more about your experience with the camera shutter lag? On the fence about S23 ultra

              • +1

@paragon: Google S23 ultra shutter lag.
Same issue I returned s21 for. Reviews say pictures are great but my mate 20 pro was way better.

Pixel is the only phone that has an objectively better camera than mate 20 imo.

Samsung camera on paper is great but it takes many shots to get a good one.

                • @badonde: Pixel has plenty of drawbacks too. But it depends what your priority is.
If camera is not your priority s23 ultra seems like a no brainer

                • @badonde: Mate 20 pro is unbeatable. I "upgraded" to an s23 and regret it.

The mate 20 pro IR face unlock is still market leading, can unlock at night guaranteed. My s23 can never do that at night. Battery life is worse on s23.

Also fingerprint is so bad on s23, hope Huawei can get google stores in future sometime. I'd jump back on the mate pro series.

                  • +2

@chillipaste: I love huawei phone, the ban was absolutely bs :'(

                • @badonde: Thanks for sharing!

    • tempted to trade my P8 for this.
would allow me to get a galaxy watch 6 lte as well.
      (where the watch isn't handicapped)
      hmmm

    • Trade in with mobile monster, they are giving better value. Use an apple watch 1 example for this deal to get $500 bonus.

    • Wow.. and how much did you spent for that 8pro? Lucky I never like google phones

  • -1

sorry im not getting this, if in the end i decided to cancel the trade in, how I can still get $1087 for s23 ultra?

    • +1

Which part of my post isn't clear? I can expand on it.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14580210/redir

      • -1

so when you get the link, you advised to pay without using the $500 coupon code, what would the amount show when paying for the s23 ultra phone itself?

        • +1

You don't use the trade in gift card they send for the value of your phone/device. The "$1 gift card (or cost of your device)

  • +1

Does this stack with telstra in store deal (if any currently going ?)

Eg the trade in $500, switch to telstra for a 1000 gift card as well and phone cost <$100

    • did you get your answer from JB?

  • Worth upgrading from s22 ultra?

    • I upgraded my s22 to s23 with $20, best upgrade regrading battery life. Don't know about ultra series

      • Happy with battery life of s22u ultra. Size or spec wise don't see a major update. May skip this generation or two.

      • HOW?!

        • Tradein

    • No, definitely if you go from the 12gb ram s22 to the 8gb s23, the subjective performance is worse in my experience. Also in normal usage there is basically no batgery life difference. In fact my s22u somehow seemed to last longer. Worse upgrade i ever made

    • Samsung thinks so.

    • Yes, no, maybe

    • Not a chance

  • Does Galaxy 23 Ultra comes with round edged screen? If so, it is a turn off for me. Wonder if the new S24 series will come with same or flat screen?

  • +6

HN n Amazon selling for $1448. Can we do price match and use this coupon ? Is it allowed?

    • Yes you can

      • Haven't done price match with JB before - how do I get them to price match if I buy online?

        • +2

Go to the live chat, request price match with the shop you're matching and they'll send you a link to a custom basket for checkout.

During the live chat they'll ask for the link of product you're price matching with so have that handy.

    • Yes, matched and used Ultimate GC (10% off) .. Thanks.

  • I did this squaretrdae thing for pixel 8 and actually sent the device in. The email I got for additional coupons had both Samsung and pixel coupons and I used the pixel one then. Now I went back to the email and clicked get coupon for Samsung and I got one. can u use both pixel and Samsung coupon. Can I use that? in the terms it mentions 1 coupon per trade in

    • looks like it, I think earlier comment said so.

  • do these have exynos or snapdragon

    • +3

      SD 8 Gen 2

      • The beast incarnate

      • +1

oh man this is a tough choice. i was leaning p8p but with snapdragon, s23 ultra could be the go

        • You are insane to go with p8p.

It is no match to the Samsung, unless you love overheating and lagfest.

          • @mg_k: Meh I had both and S23 is superior but if you value pixels unique features they are hard to live without.

            voice dictation I use constantly

Turning off mic and camera at hardware level for privacy.

            Camera also

The voice dictation and poor camera was enough reason to go back to pixel .

But I am not a gamer , I just want the best camera and decent battery.

            • +1

@badonde: Best camera goes to Samsung. Your AI is no match to superior hardware. Besides the Pixel can't even focus properly and hunts half the time lol

Decent battery on p8p? Hahah that's laughable.

It overheats and lags constantly. Battery life is no match to the Samsung with the interior Tizen cpu.

              • @mg_k: I preferred the photos on Pixel 7 over my S23 Ultra so much I installed modded gcam lol there are a lot less noise in photos now but still not as good as Pixel 7.

Video is a lot better on S23U with Samsung camera tho.

    • +1

snap, Samsung stopped using their own shit for premium models

      • oh man this is a tough choice. i was leaning p8p but with snapdragon, s23 ultra could be the go

        • -1

          p8p is pure android
samsung has its oneui bloatware which is loaded with features but is slow and unpolished, had 8gb ram so apps will keep reloading on resume.

        • Avoid the pixel like the plague

  • I wonder if there'll be any additional discounts for the early black friday tomorrow…

  • +2

Anyone who purchased today pls confirm how the invoice and gst amount looks? Is it showing as full amount or less coupon value. Am checking for TRS purpose.

    • I will probably be less that's how discount and GST works

    • Mine shows the amount before trade-in discount, i.e. $1087.

      • Any idea, how invoice will look, if I pay by gift card.. same TRS purpose.
Shall i pay with 5% GC available or pay by card and claim 10% GST.

        • +1

you claim the 10% GST amount
          Invoice will show.

          Payment method
          Gift Card

          Total amount paid $349.00
          Includes $31.73 GST

        • +1

Same TRS purpose. I just price matched instore with HN and paid using multiple GCs. Invoice came at $948. GST is $86.18.

  • -8

Why bother with deals like this? You can literally buy on Ebay someone selling 1TB version for this price.

  • +2

Wow, this makes the iPhone 14 pro max irrelevant.

  • Does 256GB model has 8GB RAM?

    • +2

      Yes

      • Hate when company like samsung try to save money with such cheap tricks

  • Anyone have advice on whether to go for this or Pixel 8 Pro at the student 10% price?

I'm upgrading from a S20 FE. Main gripe currently with my S20 FE is battery life and camera. Everything I read on comparison is conflicting so I've just been more confused.
