The Chromecast is cheaper delivered via Google Store with a StudentBeans code

I keep waiting for them to bring out a better model of the Chromecast with Google TV 4k but this one just keeps ticking along doing what I need it to do. I guess I'm thankful for that. Makes a great device for streaming from Emby.

    • +1

I'm waiting too. At this stage, if you buy the 4k one, it could be replaced any months from now

      • Honestly, I'd just get it now, it will more than likely do what you need it to do and continue doing it long after if/when they release another model. And then you could sell the old one, probably pretty easily.

    • +1

How good is Emby! Migrated from Plex to Emby, had a short dalliance with Jellyfin, quickly back to Emby. Excellent platform.

      • Why'd you switch from Plex?

        • I found it resource-intensive, constantly requiring updates, and I'd get a Can Not Find Server message every other day.

    • +1

I hear you. I'll hold off upgrading until the new revision is released or my elderly Mi Box gives up the ghost.

    • I just want a Wifi 6 version with a slightly faster processor so I can stream games to it, current one does not work well for that.

  • Dumb question, but you can cast to these Google TV devices correct? Same as the older models?

I don't care about the remote or the hub, I just wanna be able to cast from my phone to the TV.

    • +2

Yes you can, remote and hub are suprisingly useful as well

Own both the Chromecast 4K and the Firestick 4K Max. For the extra $15, I'd buy the Chromecast again if I had to. Much prefer the look, ease and feel of the Chromecast. My streaming requirements are pretty modest though.

Been using the Chromecast 4k for stremio and Kodi purposes lately, it's brilliant.

Can't believe I've circled back to torrentz all over again, but here we are

    • Stremio has been a godsend.

      • Stremio + RD is a match made in heaven for me across Windows & CCGTV

Also 5x rewards points if you activate AMEX offer.

  • Chromecast 4k is $65 here with the same code: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364580450122?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

That was quick, and will teach me to post on OzB before purchasing myself…

    I'm a simple man, I see @shxhshzhz deal, I upvote.

    • +1

      I like how you think.

  • Also, free click and collect available. No need to wait or pay for delivery. :)

  • Does officework price match it?

    • +1

Nope. Ebay uses the code word for the discount.

What is excluded from the Price Beat Guarantee?
      Gift cards
Cashback and coupon offers (i.e. supplier cashback or reduced price available via paper coupon or electronic codeword)
Commercial quantities and pricing (i.e. a reduced price not available to the public and including Apple Reseller Education pricing.)
Stock liquidations (i.e. competitor clearance products or goods sold by a business placed into receivership)

  • Guys, I never used such a device before. What does it do? If I got a laptop and a monitor with HDMI cable or a TV with casting function, do/should I need it?

    • +3

      these are used when:
      1. The TV is not smart and you want to make it into a smart TV
      2. The TV is smart but the smart TV operating system is very slow

    • +1

Plug this to your tv or monitor with hdmi, then you will have an Google tv in your hands where you can install any apps supported like streaming apps (Netflix, YouTube, prime, disney etc.), Games and others. This comes with it's own remote control, you can also cast from your own phone.

  • What's suggested between Chromecast vs Fire TV for a ye olde timer that's not much for technology but wants to see what all the fuss is with netflix and such

I'm leaning to firetv for more click and go stuff.. chromecast seems more phone driven?

    • -2

Fire stick is stand alone, you don't need a phone to operate (but can if you want). It's like a miniature set top box.

Chromecast needs a phone, so you can cast (send) to the TV via the streaming app.

For that reason I prefer a Fire stick.

      • Perfecto, thanks - firestick it is

        • +3

This is wrong info, you're referring to the old chromecast. This is standalone Google Tv (like Fire tv) with its own remote control. But also supports casting if you prefer to use your phone…I have both devices and they are both good but I prefer Google tv because of the ecosystem, i have a bunch of google home devices and most of the time use Voice command.

          • @johnyBgood: Oh didn't know that, thanks for the correction 👍

            • +1

@h4lcyon: This version of the Chromecast has been out for more than three years!! The Chromecast is a better device for a "ye olde timer that's not much for technology". I hope that he/she was able to read the correction posts before buying.

You don’t need a mobile to use the Chromecast with Google TV. It is a stand alone device the same as the fire stick. There is another Chromecast device (it looks like a puck) that only acts as a receiver of sorts from your phone. The one in this deal you can install apps on etc etc.

The my old timers the fire tv works brilliantly. But they’re much of a muchness really.

        • Yep. No phone needed for this Chromecast. It has a remote. It was only Gen 1, 2 and 3 that needed a phone to cast.

      • +1

A Chromecast is as you describe (relegated to just a background app here, by the way), but with Google TV, the product includes a wireless remote control (also optionally IR "programmable" to make some buttons dedicated TV ones), so don't need a phone but might need a gmail. Oh, and you can use your TV's remote to navigate the tubes if you enable HDMI CEC on your TV, as well enables one button press TV source input switching to the Google TV device via its remote.

  • Amazon have price matched $54 delivered for 4k Max

  • are people getting these to jail break them and install kodi? because dont all modern tvs have the same functions?

  • Does anyone know if I can return/replace in store if I buy from their eBay shop?

    • You can pick up from store so my guess if yes….

    • In my experience, it's been No.
