    2023 Xmas Charity Donations

We'll be making donations to these charities ($6667 each) later today.

Original post

It's almost Christmas, the time where many of us will travel, feast, spend time with family and spend money on shopping. However it's also the time of the year to remember and think about many around us that aren't as privileged, and how we can be generous towards them. OzBargain will be donating at least $30,000 to charity organisations this year! We have been donating to selected charities biannually since 2012, and whom we donate to depending on your suggestions and votes!

I have pre-selected 20 charities from last year's Xmas donation poll. However, community can use the "Suggestion" box in the top-level comment to suggest more charities to the poll.

Add your poll suggestion here

If you are suggesting a charity, please also

  • Check the current poll to make sure your suggestion is not already in the list.
  • Provide a link in the comment.
  • Add one or two sentences on what this charity is about, to help the community to decide.

The poll will run until Friday 22 Dec @ 12AM. After poll expires, votes will be revealed and we will divide up the final donation amount to give to the top 6 charities. Donations will then be made over the weekend before Christmas.

Moreover, for each unique commenter in this forum post, we will be donating an extra $10 (capped at $10,000 extra) to the total sum of donations. For example, if there are 500 OzBargain users commented in this post, we'll be donating $35,000 to 6 different charities ($5,834 each). If 1000 OzBargainers commented, $40,000 will be donated ($6,667 each).

Note to the Charities

This is a poll for the OzBargain users. This is not a contest between charities, and please do not ask your staff or followers on your social media to vote for you here. We had similar incidents happen in the past and those charities got disqualified from receiving donations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which charity should I suggest?

There are some limitations on the charity that a user may suggest:

  • It must be a registered charity eligible for DGR (deductible gift recipient). That would make NPOs like Wikipedia & some international charities ineligible.
  • As we are OzBargain, it would be great if the charity is Australia based or benefits Australians.
  • The suggestion feature will also be closed after having 50 charities on poll.

Please note that all the suggestions will have to be manually approved by the moderators, so they might not show up straight away.

Q: Why is foo charity on the list? Why is bar charity NOT on the list?

All the charity organisations are suggested by the community (either this year, or from previous years). If you think certain charity organisation ought to be on the list, please suggest it (provided that we haven't reached the 50 options limit). If you do not think a certain charity should be there, please leave a comment in the post, and use "Report" to notify a moderator. We will assess your claim and decide whether to remove that charity from the list.

Q: Any bargain?

  • Love the work of the charity help save lives and seen how they work. Would love if OZB can support them.
    From their Website:
MedEarth helps protect and enhance our natural environment by working with a range of partners to recover usable medical supplies and equipment that hospitals no longer want and would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Australian hospitals generate a large amount of medical solid waste each year. Much of that solid waste is unused medical supplies and equipment. As part of our environmental protection program MedEarth redistributes the medical items we recover to communities in desperate need of them.

MedEarth promotes environmental stewardship and better health in our community. It’s a simple, yet extraordinarily important process.

Every year, millions of children die before their fifth birthday – most in developing countries, and most because of preventable illnesses. MedEarth bridges the gap between our abundance and their absence, our surplus and their scarcity. Using the surplus we recover, we match our inventory to the needs in the world by partnering closely with both domestic and international partners to ensure people get what they need.

    Suggested Cerebral Palsy Alliance

@scotty great initiative again and thank you for your ongoing generosity.

My suggestion is Cerebral Palsy Alliance as it’s close to my heart and I’ve seen how challenging an impact the life long condition has on people.

Thanks to you & yours Scotty for organising this from OzB. So many are doing without & it's good to know the OzB community are trying to help just a little bit.
I like to think that most of us try to use the $$$ we save here by taking advantage of the great deals/freebies etc we find to donate that little bit extra to charity, not just to get a tax write off for EOFY but because we are a community that like to share and help each other. Why else are we on OzB in the 1st place?

Merry Xmas to all my fellow cheapskates. I hope Saint Nicholas brings you all everything on your Xmas lists & 2024 is a wonderfully happy time for us all.

& I love the $10 incentive to write this. cheers

  • Nice one guys

So many worthy charities, since I can only choose one then I have chosen The Salvation Army. As a kid growing up I remember one Christmas Mum couldn't afford Christmas presents or the Christmas lunch. I remember the Salvo's turning up with a basket of food, I found out years later they also had presents but they were hidden from us kids when they were delivered.

This is really hard! And cool!

I'm torn between something for young people, they are the future, and something for older people, me.
Or maybe something for young people who will be looking after old people, again, me.

Ok, it's young people. Healthy, safe, smart young people.
If we get this right everyone will benefit.

    Suggested Royal Children's Hospital Foundation

    Royal Children's Hospital Foundation

Children are so precious 💞 and make our lives full of joy. Whenever we are stressed whether it's work or money or any relationship issue, a cuddle from kids gives us the immense strength to face those challenges.

It's in itself a breakdown when our kids are sick and life comes to a stop when they have to be admitted in a specialist hospital like Royal Children's Hospital.

I believe this is a wonderful cause to support the kids specialist hospitals to at least not let money influence the decision making when it comes to the health of our kids.

This is RCH, Victoria. Please add your state's children's specialists hospitals as well or merge all of them into one category.

    Royal Children's Hospital RCH

Thank you @Scotty and Ozbargain community for making Christmas wonderful again this year.

  • Sorry mods for the duplicate unpublished post - it didn't preview with the heading, so I thought I'd stuffed it up. Original post:

    Endometriosis Australia

Hi all! Just putting this one out there as an option. There are over 830,000 people in Australia with endo, and it affects so many different aspects of life - obviously your physical health, but also your relationships, career and mental health. The average diagnosis time when I was first diagnosed was nine years. It's now about six and a half years, but that's still too long for anyone to suffer before finally getting a diagnosis and receiving treatment. Endometriosis Australia fund awareness campaigns, create educational programs and raise funds for research into the causes, treatments and (hopefully eventual) prevention of endo.

I suggested Rescued With Love earlier, but I wrote about lifeline so I’ll tell you a bit about Rescued With Love:

    www.rescuedwithlove.org

They are a small group who take elderly ill and often mistreated dogs from kill shelters, and via donations, give them healthcare and often the only love they’ve ever known.

They ask for donations on Facebook and people are wonderful. When and if the sad cases are helped and loved, they are often adopted out.

Not many people would take on a matted, toothless 15 year old dog with tumours, but RWL do this.

  • Great initiative, Scotty. Thanks!

Took my mum this year :(

    • I second this. MND Australia would be a great charity to add to the poll. The poll appears to be full though, so we will have to try for next time.
