Tick, tock – it’s time to shop! Order this product by 18th Dec for Christmas delivery.

Currently $79 at Google, with RRP $99. Google's offer ends on January 3, 2024 at 11:59pm AET.

I called Office Works at 12:20 AEDT and they said they already matched HN in store. It's still $69 online though, so you can call 1300 OFFICE to get the price beat. Have your CC deets ready, as you need to purchase it over phone. Either with delivery or you chose a store for C&C.

Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is $38 (SAVE $20) at HN.

No idea when HN's promo ends.

have one and love it. While the remote is tiny and VERY easy to misplace… it removes the reliance on you phone to cast things to your TV.

it removes the reliance on you phone to cast things to your TV.

You can control the Google TV through the app…

      • +8

        through the app

Sounds like your pressing to hard on the touch screen if your finger is going through the app.

          gorilla glass…

          • +5

            @jv: That's bananas!

          • @jv: Is it a gorilla made of glass or glass in the shape of gorilla? (Bold question)

            • -1

@TheGhost: No, it is glass made in sweat shops in central Africa that employ under age gorillas.

      • Whilst that is handy if in another room etc, a physical remote is much better.

        $48 cheap AF.

    • I got a case for my remote, which made it much easier to use without worrying about dropping it.

I'd recommended something like this (or in a brighter colour if you prefer):

    Your move, Amazon

    • -1

Should have asked for something else.

      • Um, why? Did I miss something? They price matched, didn't they?

        • Your wish came true.

  • +2

Thanks OP - great price, picked one up for an old TV which is struggling to remain smart :-)

      Smart move…

    Great price

Can price beat at officeworks also

      For the win…

      $45.60

      • wondering if there a way to price match online/call with OW? i don't know if this deal survives while i go to one of the OW stores

        • +1

          price match online/call with OW?

          yes

        • Might be too late, I was told over phone that "in their system" it's already price-matched.

That's despite their website still showing $69 - I tried on different devices.

          • @pizzaguy: Well, i am still waiting on the call.. but tried a new browser, incognito window and still same price($69)

  • +1

thanks op. waiting for it to hit <$50

    • +2

      $45.60 at OW…

    • +2

      This deal is <$50 already.

And the option to price beat at Office Works, as noted.
I called OW at 12:20 AEDT and they said they already matched HN in store (my browser still shows $69 though).

      • $38 at JB with a perk code then

  • This and fire TV which one is better v

    • +6

      Google TV is better…

      • I have an LG TV (webOS) that already has Chromecast capability. Is there any benefit to adding this?

        • +1

Is there any benefit to adding this?

Depends if there are any apps you want that wont install or work properly on your LG…

          Google TV is more compatible…

        • WebOS is great but I dont think you can chromecast the google photos app to it? I have an old Gen 1 Chromecast plugged in just to cycle photos on (the kids like looking at em)

        • No not really. I have a google tv and it’s slower, less reliable and more buggy than webOS.

    • +2

Fire TV 4K Max. MUCH faster and double memory. Unless you absolutely need the Google Play store.

      • I already have the fire TV 4k which is quite fast and no issue, just not sure if worth to get this Google one, I don’t need many apps just the basic one, guess I can pass it this time it’s not a lot of Upgrage I guess

    • Depends on your TV tbh. I just grabbed the fire tv cube and it's so much better in terms of upscaling and higher connectivity. I have a high-end Samsung and it's been struggling with Plex on Chromecast.

Fire changed it completely, much better upscaling and snappier.

  • Is the google store the only place that sells chromecast colours other than white? Don't want to mix up remotes as I own a few already.

  • +1

This is a great device, but they need to upgrade it, especially around storage - I can't add any new ones due to space.

    • +2

Definitely agree that this product is good but needs an update. The current model is over three years old and the interface is laggy and storage limited. Would be nice if Google kept everything the same but used an updated CPU, bit more RAM, bit more storage. Wouldn’t cost them a lot to do and I’d certainly buy one.

      • I bought the HD version last week and I thought performance was really good. It zips around compared to my 2015 shield which I factory reset only recently.

        • But when compared to fire tv box or Apple TV, it’s really lagging.

  • Waiting for Google store to drop price so I could use studentbeans

    • Unfortunately, it's already dropped and it's much higher.

  • I cannot for the life of me download the Optus Sport app. Thinks im in a diff country. Have tried everything under the sun from what i could find on google.

All google/play accounts updated, old payment methods removed, removed friend’s chromecast profile from Google Home. Reset etc. i dont use vpn and every single reference to my location is correct. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Its been a complete waste of money as ive been forced to stream it from my phone and the picture/motion quality is woeful compared to how my older chromecast performed.

  • That's a great one to use with Plex and SmartTube. Love it.

  • Got the HD version for my parents for their caravan so they can stop bothering me about how to connect their (older chromecast) when they are out camping. It's a lot easier to use the remote to navigate.

  • Bought it for $20 from Marketplace and regretting it. Slow and sluggish display and needs to be reset when travelling requires connecting to new wifi network. Going back to my old Roku box.

    • I have been able to connect to new Wifi without resetting.

Did you try updating to the new firmware.

      • Yes. All done and latest firmware on it.

  • +1

Success! Price matched at JB Hi-Fi and paid with discounted 15% off gift cards.

Rumors are there is a refresh coming in 2024 https://9to5google.com/2023/09/18/google-tv-amlogic-s905x5/ - personally I have 3 of this gen and the main gripe is the number of apps

4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage should be baseline for next one. Perhaps this is the runout model.

  • +3

Bought this to use streamio / realdebrid. So good. Finally ditched all the subscription services with it!!!

  • +2

Recommend. We've got 4 of these now. 3 replaced regular Chromecasts which are inconvenient to use, and the 4th went on our 2021 Samsung Q60A as it was already starting to get a bit slow at both loading and using apps.

    • Yep out Samsung TVs are the worst. Meanwhile lg webOS still going strong.

      • Yea.
Our other 2021 TV is a Sony X90J with Google OS and it's great.
Before that I bought and returned a 2021 Samsung Q70A. It was great for a few months, but then it started taking several minutes to respond at times, rendering it almost unusable.
Our ~8 year old Samsung got so slow after a few years that I had to disconnect it from the internet to speed it up, instead relying on a Chromecast for streaming.

        • Oh man I have the x90j and it’s terrible haha. That’s the one I bought the Apple TV for!!

          • +1

@onlinepred: I disabled the targeted advertising option, or whatever it's called. It declutters the home menu and speeds it up a fair bit. Less adds and recommendations. Just a single "latest release" at the top and then all of my apps. That got it from not so great to good.

  • damn it, just bought hd one the other day for $30 something -.-

    • Yeah looks like the first time this low on the 4k one from what I know and it's HN's deal

  • Given the age of the device, this is what it should be retailing for normally.

    • +2

If you can make one for $48, then go for it…

    • age should not determine cost or value

      • No, but storage space and RAM should. This device is low on both (I've reached the limits on my device - to the point where I can't install any more apps and it slows right down). Its age also means it's due for a refresh soon, so I'd be hesitant at paying full RRP for a device that will be replaced by something better shortly.

  • Loves Gerry

  • Thanks OP, got 2 at OW with free shipping.

  • +1

Pricematched at Good Guys and used the $20 voucher they gave out because the lenovo chromebook I ordered is delayed. Happy with $28!

    • +1

Damn I forgot I had the same $20 Voucher. What a rookie mistake from my behalf.

      • buy another one? :P

    • Did you do it over the phone or in store?

    • +1

Did the same but had 2 x $20 Store Cash to use up!! Happy with $8 :)
      I did it in-store

  • Can't stand the OS on Samsung and LG tvs. Also can't stand regular tv remotes in general. So I got 3 of these. Crunchyroll can barely function on this thing though.

  • -1

Good to combine with the $20 off $50 in store Afterpay spend maybe? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/819302

  • thanks. Was able to get jb to price match over live chat.

  • You can side load apps like onstream.

  • Does anyone know if chromecast bypasses the netflix household thing?

  • +2

So OW still shows it at $69 online, but when I call them to price beat, they say it's $48 in the store.

I won't be dying on that hill, but sounds dodgy as - they have a legit offer online which they're supposed to price-beat, but they won't do that for me.

Is that a usual Office Works' BS or should I try another store?

    • +2

Officeworks price beat over the phone for me. try a different rep?

      • Had to call 1300 OFFICE (instead of my particular store - I know now, that it's the go-to number for price beat) and a bit reluctantly they agreed to price beat and do click n collect. Reluctantly, as they said it's already $48 in stores. But still more expensive online.

To pay, they took my credit card number on the phone.

        That's 1:30pm AEDT.

  • G'day, how are folks getting price match at officeworks? I want to get a few as Xmas gifts.

    • Just called one of the local stores and confirmed they can price HN. I'll pop in and tell the staff to price-match it for me this arvo

  • +3

Was driving past HN - saw the deal and my car automatically drove right in without asking - nice one OP

  • Have a classic old Chromecast what this can do better rather than 4k and apps when I don't have a 4k TV?

    • It doesn't have a display, it won't cook your dinner or anything like that, so since 4K and apps have been noted as the (big) difference, I guess what's left is USB-C instead of micro USB.

Oh, and you get a remote.

      • Do you get confused with all the buttons?

        • It's a bit of the learning curve, but manageable.

  • Apologies for my ignorance, when you have a smart tv, why do you even need a Chrome caste ?

    • +1

Some smart tv's are slow and sluggish…my experience with the chromecast is fast and reliable

      • +1

Or at least faster and more reliable, as some peeps in here say it's still too slow for them.

Anyway, the user interface is neat and fast, the apps take a bit to load, but no drama to me.

  • Does Google Photos actually show your photos in 4K these days? That's the main reason I'd buy this. I'd read somewhere it only shows photos at 720p…I'm hoping that's wrong

  • Update: confirmed OW have priced matched to $48 in their system however online still showing $69. Can pick up in store at this price.
    Hope that helps.
