Global shutter should be great for slow-mo footage too ;)

  • +13

    Great stocking filler

  • +3

the $300 gift card really pushes this from a good to great deal thanks op

  • +3

I would really like one of these, but at $10k I would need to start some sort of photography business to justify.

    • +2

I’ve sold my body to science for the last 12 months and wasn’t even paid enough for this. They made me get a liver ultrasound and told me not to get anyone pregnant or donate sperm…

    • You still need to get lenses separately!

      • Gonna need to pimp arse to get lenses.

  • +5

Looking forward to buying one used for $3k in a few years time :-D

  • +10

    $10k camera? Raise the rates.

    • Actually what eill raise rates is all the laptops we need for kids school next year lol

  • -3

    That’s like almost 5 iPhone 15 Pros!

    • +4

If you put it that way, this is a bargain!

      • Yeah, made me realise that it is actually so cheap

  • Genuine question as someone just getting properly into photography/videography:

Why y'all buying this? Do you really need 120fps? Is the global shutter going to really elevate your videos enough to warrant the price of 8 Panasonic G9s?

    • +2

Global shutter = no banding from lights in venues.

Got an A1, mechanical + electronic (including variable) shutter can't get around banding on screens or specific lights at high shutter speeds (required to freeze action for concerts).

A Canon R3 in the same venues runs into the same problems.

      • -1

So sounds very specific, but beneficial to your niche of work?

        • +4

Yup and something that no amount of money spent elsewhere can fix.

        • +2

Mechanical shutter makes noise too so this can take photos under lights without making noise, no rolling shutter and no banding. It is a premium price and the tech will trickle down to the more affordable models in the future.

          • -7

@Caped Baldy: Dude. There will be noise. Seriously. Read like…. a thing or something.

            • +3

@Sxio: i suspect he means noise from a mechanical shutter, not iso noise.

          • -3

@Caped Baldy: I just bought a z9 from Amazon for thousands less than this Sony. It won multiple camera of the year awards in the last 12 months and also lacks a mechanical shutter, shoots 120 FPS pre release mode, but if you already bought into Sony eco system of accessories and lenses then it's not a viable option.

            • +2

@spinferno: There is a night and day difference to how z9 does 120 fps with 11mp jpegs vs 24mp raw files on a9iii. It's not even a contest

              • +3

@BuDWiZe: Yeah, you would hope that someone that blew enough money on a Z9 would know better… the Z9 is limited to 20 FPS when shooting RAW and even the existing Sony A1 is already capable of 30.

      • Couldn't you just get a bmpcc for video and a stills camera for stills?

        • I don't do video but all modern cameras on the market will suffer from banding in those circumstances. Until the A9 III releases, there is literally nothing off the shelf that I can buy that can fix this problem, going and getting another camera today won't cut it.

    • Motorsport photography also for example.

      • +1

Whilst I understand these valid examples, I fear many are getting this because of FOMO/GAS

        • +4

Hey if it makes someone happy to get one - more power to them, would also assume they already have some really good glass.

          • @Sal in SA: Yeah if you are on the market for this you are already drowning in GM glass.

        • Why would you care why others are getting it?

You can only control what you do.

    • Ultra high shutter speed for things like motor sports photography at the cost of inferior image quality. It’s not for everyone, or I would say it’s not for most people.

      • +1

An absolutely must for wildlife especially birds in flights

        • Says you. The market will tell.

    • +1

The A9 is really targeted at professional sports photographers (perhaps wildlife too), I'm sure other pros use it, but it's unlikely many hobbyists are using this due to its price tag and the fact it's not necessary for 99% of people.

  • +10

Why can't it be $300 and come with a $9995 gift card :(

    • +7

Videopro, hire this guy. He's a marketing genius

    • +12

"Why can't I have no kids and three money"

      • Because you didn't use protection, a few dollars of investment would have increased exponentially.

      • Haha yes this was the inspiration

  • +1

I thought it was $300 and was going to buy one, then saw the actual price lol

  • -1

    fuxa global shitter
    ?

    • +4

A global shutter means photos and video frames are uniformly captured across the entire sensor. Previous technology (i.e. every other consumer camera) uses a rolling shutter. In the real world this is noticeable if you're panning or walking in videos quickly which results in the image "warping" or appearing wobbly. Can also be seen in photos of anything moving very fast such as helicopter blades as an example

  • +13

Next week if I win $70million, I'm gonna buy you all one!

    • Thank you so much.

    • +2

      !remindme oneweek

    • Could you just transfer the cash?

  • Would you recommend this for selfies?

    • +9

That's actually exclusively what it is designed for.

Includes filters to make it look like phone front cameras from 2012 for that 'authentic feel'.

  • +2

I mean to be fair, it isn't the first camera with a global shutter, and it's hard to justify $10,000 for faster sync when HSS works. But neat for those who have a use case.

    • The amount of use cases a global shutter has is quite a lot, but yeah especially for now until global shutter gets cheaper it’s not for everyone

  • RRP $14995. Now $9995.

    • +4

You’d be crazy not to buy one.

  • Nah their shipping is too pricey.

    • +1

The postie left mine on the doorstep and a bloody quokka nicked it! I knew the tourist push for "quokka selfies" would be trouble, bloody things have turned into photo mad tearaways!

  • -8

    Camera: Sony
But, anyone who pays this for that is insane.

    • +1

I’m thinking of buying one to take photos of my dog eating pizza…

  • +1

Nice bargain. Don't the shutter on every camera work globally, not just this model?

    • +6

No, some freeze once you leave the country.

      • Need to add an intl roaming e-sim.

    • +6

Other digital camera sensors record images line by line by line when using the electronic shutter. For fast objects this can cause distortion (eg helicopter propellers).

This global sensor records the whole image at once.

It's niche for most people but useful for videographers and sports photographers and some others. The tech will trickle down to "cheaper" models in a few years.

  • came here to read the shitposts, was not disapointed.

    • +1

      Same

    • Come back and read mine.

  • +1

Could have grabbed it for 9k the other day via JB. They had 10% off store wide, no exclusions. Pre-ordered the two new Canon lenses - RF 200-800 & RF 24-105 f/2.8 with the 10% discount. Rumoured to be happening again before xmas.

    • i want the 200-800 for sport!

      • Not so sure about its sports performance due to its aperture being so high. Maybe in bright sunlight it’ll be ok. I mainly want it for daytime wildlife shoots.

    • JB Hi Fi are pretty inconsistent with stocking Sony gear, the A9III isn't listed on their website and a lot of existing lenses are missing too.

      • +1

They aren’t usually listed. I always have to go in and ask, but they have them in their system.

        • Ah right, will keep that in mind for another sale then!

          • +1

@eecan: It really burned JB badly when they had 25% off canon a few years ago! Picked up a bunch of the pre-ordered RF lenses for a steal as I managed to stack the further 5% discount email code + 10% off for buying the EOS R & RF lenses on the same invoice + 5% off JB gift cards through Youi. Basically got 45% off RRP of pre-ordered lenses as well as the EOS R for $1899 (plus a further $250 Cashback!).

    • To be fair JB’s Canon prices are usually full RRP no matter how much time has passed. 10% just gets you closer to other (also local) retailers. Handy for a preorder though.

  • Our poor AU dollar is certainly making this worse. The US price is 6k. Still, these cameras are overpriced, i don’t think the sensor is that expensive to produce.

    • +1

Most people buying this would be buying with an ABN and tax deduction. It's priced accordinly :P

    • You have to add r&d costs into it to

      • +1

Yeah but still they have made similar sensor already for cinema and industrial applications. The body is basically the same as the rest of at alpha line. It's just market economics, they are charging what they think they can get. Same with the A1, from a manufacturing perspective it would not be 2k more expensive than an a9

    • Which poor Aussie dollar? It gained 4% over the past week or so, after US feds announced multiple rate cuts in 2024

  • +2

The amount of people trolling a 10K camera post need to know that this price is for body only.
No, people will not put a $200 camera lens on $10K camera body.

    • Why? Are you saying $200 lens will not work? What about $300 lens?

  • +2

Hopefully the tech starts filtering down to the a7 S'r, R's and Base. Will probably be some time before the R's and Base a7's get a Global Shutter, but I can see this sensor going in the next S as that would clearly benefit from a global shutter (but the S's BSI 12MP readout is pretty quick anyway, so maybe Sony will milk that sensor a while longer). Not sure about the a1 which is BSI, and 50MP which is would be epic if Sony could achieve G/S with BSI @ 50MP.

Game changer for me as there would be no need for a mech shutter as I feel that is the limiting factor on S's and Base a7 which don't feature as good a mech shutter as the R's (which is rated to 500K), unrated for a others, plus is a different part number (Nidec supplied). By that time mech shutter actuations count would be a non issue. Excluding the obvious gains with no jellow/rolling shutter effect.

    • Indeed it would be a game changer for many event photographers.

I'd love to be able to use electronic shutter 100% of the time in a camera with global shutter with no drawbacks. Light banding in interior environments drives me crazy if it's an event where I'm forced to use electronic shutter due to mechanical shutter noises being disruptive (ceremonies, solemn occasions, etc.)

Like many others, I'm waiting for this to trickle down to more accessible camera bodies in 5-10 years.

  • +1

    Thanks OP bought none

    costs more than my car

  • +3

$10k and no free shipping, what the heck

    • yeah such a shame. at least the gift card helps to offset the cost a bit :')

  • Nice xmas sorted for the family!

  • Ive seen it 9999 already by black friday the 10.5k price seems bloated . Reckon you see ships compete to 9.5 by release day.
I would hold off on a pre order till we see dynamic range tests. Other rhan that this camera is boss mode for sports and a tthing with artificial light

  • Last time i owned a camera it was a Polaroid camera how does this compare with a Polaroid?
