    Micro Usb in 2023

    • +8

At least you’ll have 5+ cables lying around you could use

    • +1

ikr? cant believe the Boom 4 hasn't been released after all these years - its about time!

      I actually bought a USB C adaptor for this….

    • +1

Yup, ridiculous. To me it's worth $50 like a clearnce item bc of that way out of date and inconvenient port.

Hard pass, though I am looking for portable speakers.

      Thanks OP

      • +3

They can also charge on a dock, which is pretty convenient actually

    • +2

Boring comment. Micro USB is perfectly fine, the speaker is great.

      • +1

But everything sounds so much better with USB-C! Plus speakers have come so far since this was released ;-)

        • 😂

          • +1

@mrau: wait for USB-D….it supports Dolby

            😅😂

    • This is the equivalent of saying a mobile phone won't work with less than 4GB of RAM.

  • +2

Other colours are available at $98 from Gerry

    • +1

But are professionals welcome to shop there?

      • +4

No. I am boycotting that greedy SOB.

      • Nah we’re too professional for Gerry lol

    • +2

You can get officeworks to pricebeat. Even cheaper and you dont give that grub any money.

  • This or Soundcore Motion Boom going at $109 in terms of better ‘bang’ for bucks?

    • +1

I'd get the motion plus over the motion boom. And at this price I'd probably get the boom over the motion plus.

    • +1

Motion Boom. Handles everything effortlessly. Not the best if you want to play music quietly as it has a DSP bug that the Soundcore Boost shares, the volume fluctuates (for speech no problem).

    • linked wrong product.

  • +8

I got this device a couple of years ago and going strong. Great volume and clarity of sound. It fits perfectly in the cup holder of my old car 🚗 😁

    • You are going to confuse a lot of people with that confession.

How can it possibly work with micro USB?

  • +2

    JBL flip 5 better

  • +2

Unicorn colours is also available for $98, but no stock n will be delivered when they have stock. Ultimate Ears Boom 3 Wireless Bluetooth Speaker - Unicorn https://amzn.asia/d/7f66mAE

    • +1

They have to discount it when a unicorn throws up on it.

  • +1

FYI The add says MEGABOOM this is not the MEGABOOM version but the smaller version Amazon false advertising

    • How can u tell. Now I'm really confused

    • +1

Yes there is a slight listing error, but if you look at the rest of the listing it's obvious it's not a Megaboom

  • Sizing the megaboom is bigger than this.

  • +1

Good comparison video. Looks like jbl flip 6 standsout as winner. https://youtu.be/SaXVGasdiBs?si=caWC0s1wSvcNdyEn

    • +1

the only reason to buy one of these now is if all your friends also have them, because the pair up feature is very good

  • 2-5 weeks for delivery

    • For red… blue still in stock.

  • What happens when battery dies?
I have 2 x Bose Spundlink mini 1 & 2 that are unusable since the battery is dead. Can’t even use them plugged in all the time.

    • I think there is a YouTube be video that shows how to replace it

    • You can buy replacement batteries.

  • I ordered & clicked megaboom now concerning knowing different size probably turn up.

    • You will get the smaller one

    • either cancel or keep it, still a good price for the smaller one. which is still pretty loud as a friend has one.

  • +2

My friend has this and I always found the sound signature to be bright and shrill. But it does get loud and robust build

  • I would prefer the Soundlink Flex over this

  • +2

    Micro USB. No thanks.

  • +2

Is this boom 3 or megaboom 3?

    • Boom 3 but you can always hit up the Amazon chat to resolve it

  • I got a Tribit Stormbox for two thirds of the price, same speaker arrangement and likely better sound.

  • Why this shit stopped charging when plugged in?
    Seems lemony

    • "Why this shit stopped charging when plugged in?"

what do you mean? it stops charging when you plug the cable in, but charges when it's not plugged in??

or do you mean "stops playing when plugged in."?

  • Wonderboom 3 looks to be better: https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/ultimate-ears-b… and was previously cheaper.

    • +1

interesting. the Wonderboom 3 has been as low as $69~$79 so seems like the better deal.

the consumer in me didn't even think of looking up a comparison because I just thought Wonderboom 3 is half the size and it won't be anywhere close. but Rtings shows they are very similar in external volume dimensions. the Boom 3 is skinnier and taller but Wonderboom 3 is shorter but fatter. they also get equally loud (86.9dB SPL).

the Boom 3 seems to have a bit more bass boost but the bass doesn't dig as deep and the drop in output at 10k will definitely be noticeable. Wonderboom 3 has deeper bass but no bass boost it will sound a bit more "flat" and IMO "tinnier" because of how the sound is relative to everything above the bass. same IP rating and both have micro-USB. Wonderboom has next track via button available but Boom doesn't.

Wonderboom 3 doesn't have App connection support while the Boom 3 does. but the main reason I would go with the Wonderboom 3 is you get almost 10 hours more battery life (tested 13.7 vs 22.3 hrs).
I also EQ my bluetooth speakers using free apps (don't need App support) so I would choose the Wonderboom 3 tuning with the deeper bass and do a low pass filter with EQ to boost the bass.

what's interesting is UltimateEars themselves claim Wonderboom 3 has two 40mm drivers and Boom 3 has two 50mm drivers. Boom 3 also has larger passive radiators. but the Wonderboom 3 still digs deeper in the bass? I think maybe for sound design the internal volume and shape matters.

      • Boom 3 has much more high bass but it's high frequencies are rather terrible, it's not worth it. I'd rather have low bass output vs muddy bass that's only present in the higher bass frequencies.
Ended up deciding on the Megaboom 3 as a present (https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/ultimate-ears-m…) but missed the sale at I think was ~$170 so not sure what to do. Obviously would have to use an EQ to turn down the bass on the Megaboom though.
EDIT: Also the Wonderboom doesn't have app support so EQ options are rather limited.

        • "EDIT: Also the Wonderboom doesn't have app support so EQ options are rather limited."

yeah I mentioned that, but it's not a deal breaker for me. if streaming most apps have built in EQ (e.g. spotify) and if playing your own mp3 files you have free app music players that have much more advanced EQ control (onkyo HF player app is one great example). if on androidOS I hear there are even system wide EQ apps that will have their effect on anything you play on the phone (spotify/youtube/mp3 files).

Megaboom 3 has been as cheap as around $149 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739071

if you missed your window I don't think prices are going to drop until after Xmas (Boxing day) because stores know everyone is rushing to buy presents.

          • @harshbdmmaster718:

Megaboom 3 has been as cheap as around $149

That was a long time ago though.

            • @AreYouAWiiizard: yeah but product stock gets old. the little batteries in these things don't hold charge forever and a battery sitting at extremely low voltage is not good. stock will usually have a "sell by date" otherwise lots of customers end up with speakers that don't charge or don't hold a charge. even more reason to look out for a better deal IMO.

if you want another suggestion/option. soundcore motion boom and motion boom plus are seen as great value BT speakers at the moment. they just aren't 360 speaker designs. not on sale at the moment but they get close to the $170 budget you mentioned.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: Boom seem a bit too low quality but the Boom+ seem like a great alternative. Disappointing about the loss of fully directional audio and the battery life/charge time are a bit annoying. They say you can lower bass boost to get much better battery but I don't know how much that would affect the audio.

                • @AreYouAWiiizard: "charge time"

yeah that's one of the negatives of the soundcore boom speakers. on the plus side, the slower the charge typically means less heat. meaning a healthier charge. people want fast charge everything these days but it is at the cost of battery health in the long term.

    • hey just had to thank you for your original comment. ordered a Wonderboom 3 from the Target deal + $10 off with newsletter signup. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/821602

couldn't get the colour I wanted but you don't get to pick and choose do you when it's on clearance.

      • Yeah, I ended up going with the Wonderboom 3 also but colours were running out fast (1 went in checkout) so I didn't notice you could save another $10 on newsletter signup :/

        • I got some info after checkout stage I think which said something like "if we don't have stock at your local store, we will find it at another store and have it delivered to you" or similar.
but yeah if you went for one of the desirable/low stock colours it's a gamble because I heard many of the Target "Air fryer" orders were getting cancelled.

"so I didn't notice you could save another $10 on newsletter signup :/"

yeah to be honest I wouldn't have known unless an ozbargain comment said so. no indication of $10 off for signing up to newsletter on Target website. maybe they removed that for the sale I dunno.

        • by the way I just read an email from cashrewards and realised I missed out on roughly another $12 off. 😭

they were offering 20% cashback at Target for a short period which would have been 20% off $64. so yeah I missed out too.
