Poll shows 71% agrees with the ban …

      • -1

that's not what the Poll question is asking…

    • +1

      Seems totally reasonable to me.

      • Why are Scoot accessing their customer's private facebook pages?

        • +2

It doesn't say in the article how the comment was accessed. It may have been observed by a third party, and then reported through.
More importantly, Why is he making threats to hijack planes? What kind of idiot is sitting in an airport, making comments about hijacking and crashing planes?

It was a completely stupid thing to say, and I think this is an adequate course of action for Scoot to take for the safety of their crew and for their customers.

        • Why is he making threats to hijack planes?

Why are people reading comments on his personal pages?
It was a personal comment he made to an individual…
It's not as if he posted it on Scoot's Facebook page…

FYI, the comment is still there…

        • The comment/threat doesn't sound serious enough to deny his return flight.

        • It was a personal comment he made to an individual…

That could have potentially affected the lives of a few hundred people.
Stupid comment by somebody with no foresight.

Why are people reading comments on his personal pages?

What if it was somebody who had him added, and then reported him?
What if it was Facebook, who may have reported a potential threat of terrorism?
What if it was a passenger of the flight, simply looking over his shoulder when he was using his mobile device/internet terminal?
Or, What if it was simply pointed out/share/reposted it until it finally met attention further down the line?

        • The comment/threat doesn't sound serious enough to deny his return flight.

It might have been, had it been made publicly, but it was a personal comment made on his own facebook page in response to another personall comment from someone else.

Scoot has no right to read personal pages of their customers.
They didn't even ask him for an explanation…

        • That could have potentially affected the lives of a few hundred people.

How? it was a comment directed to his son, as a joke. It was not made to Scoot or the public.

        • +1

The airline says that they have an "obligation" to protect passengers and staff, but when their flight was delayed 5 hours, the same airline forgot about the obligation to look after the safety of the passenger who was left stranded.

I don't think any sane person would interpret this comment as a serious threat. If the airline goes out of their way to ensure the "safety" of the passengers, they should do it without punshing the suspect ie, offer to pay the return flight cost in another airline.

        • +1

"it was a comment directed to his son, as a joke. It was not made to Scoot or the public"

If one passenger says (or whispers) to another that s/he would hijack the plane and if this is overheard by the airline staff, I would think they have a reasonable basis to stop the suspected passenger from flying and report him/her to the police for investigation, despite it was a personal comment made from one person to another.

In this case, the airline did not report to the police or do any investigation which is enough evidence that the airline did not take this threat seriously. Instead, they just cancelled the ticket which does look like taking a revenge rather than ensuring passenger safety.

        • which is enough evidence that the airline did not take this threat seriously.

of course they didn't… the only reason they took the action was because the comment was negative about the airline and someone got pissed off…

Just got back from Singapore, can recommend scoot! Great service

Make sure you stay 1 night at marina bay sands! Cost more than the flight, but TOTALLY worth it

Sentosa island is a must as well :D

    • when i go i will definately stay at the mega hotel ( marin bay sands )…i have five people to travel and the rooms there only have a limit of 4 though….

    • +1

      Great flight, Terrible food!
As Scoot is the discount section of Singapore Airlines, I was disappointed the food was not worth eating. Talking to a SA pilot, he told me they repainted their planes & put more seats in.

I recommend Scoot if you want a cheap flight to SE Asia. Often $18 (+baggage) on to KL with AirAsia, and then so cheap to so many destinations.
eg India for au$66 1 way from KL (Book now till 21 Oct 2012 Travel from 3 Jan - 31 Mar 2013)

Been waiting for the price to fall. Bought at $78 last time. I'm booking!

    • Just got back from Singapore

Did you try the Singapore Noodles ?

      • I was in Singapore & Malaysia for the food (eg Singapore Food Festival)!! That is what you go there for - fantastic food at bargain prices. But Singapore is expensive compared with neighbouring countries.

        • +3

But Singapore is expensive compared with neighbouring countries.

          It's also a lot cleaner…

        • +4

          And arguably safer.

        • +6

If you worry about cleanliness & safety - just stay home!
It depends what you want from your travel experience - the closeted hotel/ package tour experience where you are kept at a distance from reality (nothing wrong with a bit of luxury), or living with the locals experience - where you may get dirty, but you may also have the time of your life.

Singapore is all about show / perception - it seems very artificial - like a Sentosa theme-park of life. I found it lacked substance compared to other countries. Work, shopping, food (socialising revolves around the last two) are the pillars of life by what I saw.

A lot of the fun of travel is the chaos of the markets - which are dirtier than an aisle of an Australian supermarket!! Supermarkets in Singapore sell a lot of Aussie food - so its just like home anyway. Shopping is mainly in sterile air-conditioned malls.

There are even pickpockets in Singapore, as in lots of places.
(I travel in Japan for months most years - a much safer country in my opinion. Sometimes I sleep in parks or on beaches in Japan, and the locals just are curious & give me gifts!)

A lot of rubbish on the streets last month - dirtier than most Australian cities. Some areas stank.

Food hygiene is controlled, so hawker stalls are pretty safe to eat at. But locals told me they try to get away with things if not watched. It is very much a society that is used to being watched.

Graffiti is limited to slogans by the government (unless you know where to look - got some great photos). There are instructions on the slogans of how to upload photos of you in front of them, what hash-tag to use, and 'PLEDGE' buttons - like FB 'LIKE', to show allegiance to the government's thoughts…

And people repeatedly tell you how wonderful Singapore is - without thinking deeply about what they have been told to say. Seems LKY was great at spin & control.

I could not get out of Singapore fast enough - give me a bit of rubbish & chaos along with spontaneity of the people any day! But I did see a snake in the Botanic Gardens & the Orchids there were absolutely the best displays I have ever seen.

(But just booked my flight as the price is right. Will fly on from Changi to KL the same day. Singapore is a good transport hub, and I can see orchids in the airport.)

        • +2

Couldn't agree more with your assessment of Singapore, bruce. Malaysia is just over the bridge and a manifestly more vibrant and interesting place. :)

        • +1

Thanks - hope I am not banned now!
(Used to happen a while back. I was actually banned from another country & deported based on my reputation! Have a current defamation threat from a law firm on my desk - all because I say what I think (which my lawyers insist I state is my personal & definitely fallible opinion). But have never lost in past defamation actions.)

But head up into Malaysia - away from Singapore over weekends. The working hordes from that big city head into Malaysia to devour the real food & descend on the beaches & islands! Those Locusts barely leave enough for me.

I love Malacca, but Jonkers Street is full of Singaporeans from Friday night to Sunday lunch. They MUST eat in that famous street. The food is good, but usually no better than restaurants a block or two away.

        • mm I suspect we went to a different singapore!

sure there was the polished side, but there was also the bars packed with smokers

          or hostesses

or karaoke singers.. or possibly all three

Perhaps it was because of the hungry ghosts festival?

        • +2

I was sticking with locals - eating & talking with them, mostly away from tourist spots. As with every experience, we all go to a slightly different Singapore - we take our own framework to view our experience through. Having different experiences tells us more about ourselves than the real experience - at least in my experience.

In 2013 - Hungry Ghost Month is August 7 to September 4. I missed it this year.
That time of year is different… "Many taboos are applied by Chinese people during the Hungry Ghost Festival such as not to wander at night, not to go swimming, not to have a trip, not to get married, and many more. As a result, most entertainment places are empty in the countries celebrating the Hungry Ghost Festivals."

Most travellers just use Singapore as a convenient stopover, so enjoy a safe modern Western experience in Asia. Nothing wrong with that.

But it seems too much like a big working-shopping-eating theme-park to me. I think, Godzilla like, the theme-park that is Sentosa Island has risen up out of the bay & taken over the whole Island of Singapore, but the locals don't realise it.

        • +2

"we take our own framework to view our experience through. Having different experiences tells us more about ourselves than the real experience - at least in my experience"

          spot on there :)

It seems like the festival did make a difference, that and we completely avoided shopping.

        • I think not shopping is against the law in Singapore!!

        • +1

It's about managing risk. ie. I'll cross the street, but I won't cross the highway.

        • Have seen a few dead Toads on the highways lately :)

And theme-park rides are all about 'managed risk' - all the perception of high risk, but (mostly) done in complete safety. That's my impression of Singapore - a fake 'gated community'.

Off to play on the highway of life again!

    • S$25 (Au$20) just to walk around the rooftop.

  • The cheapest I can see is $199 one way.

    • +4

I just found $99 flights straight away in November & January dates. Special is from Gold Coast only.
      Very limited dates: 1-9 November 2012 & 21 Jan - 6 Feb 2013
But found no cheap flights back on Australian site - try Singapore site - it is usually cheaper.

      • +1

"try Singapore site - it is usually cheaper."

        Thanks for the tip.
Just wondering whether this complies with their T&C.

eg au$150 (S$188) on 22 Jan SIN-Gold Coast (make mistake before)

        • +1

I indeed saw that tickets are cheaper when booked separately as you suggested ie. Singapore-Gold coast sector is cheaper when bought as a separate ticket.

The question I have is whether this is frowned upon by the airline (or worse, whether their terms and conditions disallow this practice)

        • +2

No problems at all in my experience. You are buying 2 separate flights.
Notice taxes & charges only appear after selecting flight!

        • I booked my flightsas you described last time i flew, and i had no issues.

      • +1

Would have been useful if the OP had mentioned this as I don't want to check every date range to find them.

        • +1

Yes. Deal link shows $199. Deal was only in the email sent to subscribers to Scoot.
OP probably was unaware that this promo is targeted at Scoot followers.
To help, I put dates above in bold.

  • Same here

  • Fly = $99
    Fly + Baggage = $223

    Phew!

    • +1

Travel light! Just back from 7 weeks on $78 flights - 7kg bag + 3Kg day pack. Was so happy not to have the hassle of all the extra baggage while travelling on local transport & bought what extras I needed while I was there at bargain prices.

      • What is 3kg day pack? Isn't 7kg the total hand luggage weight allowance?

        • laptop bag allowance

        • +3

          7kg + small bag/laptop up to 3kg - no problems
I wore a few layers of clothes & pockets full through check-in to save weight in bag.
They did not worry about my bag being nearly 8 kg (less than 1kg over seemed fine)
Did not weigh additional small bag (with food for flight etc)

        • Is it allowed for the laptop bag to have other things without a laptop?

        • +1

No worries! They didn't even look at it at Gold Coast or Singapore.

      • son, i am impressed.

      • Backpacking, gotta love it!

      • Became friends with a 73 year old backpacker on Perhentian Besar Island in NE Malaysia in late August. He was just back from Turkey. Have been invited to stay in one of his homes in Oz & NZ.

We were paying $6/n in a resort (24hour electricity & aircon dorm - far from everything so continuous electricity from quiet generators is a luxury) & having $3 all-you-can-eat breakfasts, before a day of snorkeling, lazing on the beach while being massaged for 2 hours ($15), use the free WiFi, before an evening meal of BBQ fresh fish, salad, fruit, etc on the beach for $5. (That is expensive compared to some locations in Asia.) Life is tough! But traveling light makes it easier.

    • +3

Choose fly, then proceed with the booking and choose to add anywhere from 15kg of luggage for $28 up to 40kg for $60. Works out a total of $139 for fly with 20kg of luggage and credit card fee. Compared to choosing Fly+Baggage.

      • Good find

  • Damn it, I literally booked 2 weeks ago when they were on sale for slightly less. All up cost me $395 per person with 20kg of luggage. Return from the gold coast to singapore. Would have cost me around $320 return putting the same dates in now. Oh well $395 is still damn cheap., considering it is costing me $300 return from Townsville to Brisbane.

    • $249 return if book return flight at www.flyscoot.com (au$150) (Sorry to tell you that!)

      • +1

Nah I am flying out on the 1st of Feb and back on the 15th of Feb. Booked separately from flyscoot.com, OOL-SIN $139 with 20kg luggage and CC fee. SIN-OOL $SGD232, $185 with 20kg luggage and CC fee. Total cost of $324 return. I paid $395 return.

  • How can I pay with ING's PayWave & get 5% off ;)

  • Get lost lah

      • but what is there in Singapore? did you scooter around? it seems like Penang, all about the food..

        • There's the ummmmm…..the….the night safari!!

        • The night zoo

          How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too
We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo

        • and whats wrong with "all about the food.."??? Penang is mainly about food, which is great.
(I travel to places simply for great food & genuine welcoming smiles on people's faces.)

Singapore is a tiny country - its a few day stop-over place for most travellers, rather than a destination. Its where you can get to (cheaply) from Singapore or KL that matters. I will just transit there on the cheap ticket I just bought. There are so many more interesting places to visit - but that's a personal preference.

        • +1

Bruce, you should start a travel blog. You posts are always interesting, informative & even amusing most of the time. Good stuff!

        • You can't be allowed to get away with saying that!
The defamation action is in the post.
Thanks! But writing is work, and travel is for pleasure (up to 9 months/year).

        • Just curious, but are you a journalist/media reporter by any chance (I've come to the conclusion that you must be well known [from something you did due to job] to cause you to be actually banned from a country…)?

        • 9 months per year! How do you do it? Are you a retiree?

        • Political - went through a military interrogation at a border crossing (with 3 rifles at my head at one stage, told I was to be shot, short detention, then deported). Believe me - no one should experience that. Still have the occasional PTSD symptoms.

It was the Queensland Police (1980 - Queensland did not stand for trouble makers who organised rallies against police corruption so I sometimes had 24 hour 'protection' by Special Branch) who tipped the other Government off that I was to visit a group in their country to teach organic gardening - I had been invited by the group. By the time the news reached the other Government - I was the most wanted terrorist, not a hippie gardener.

Well that is the version fit to print… I'm certainly not well known & the Police files from that time were shredded to stop any action against members of that Government! But I am theoretically still banned from that country.

My motto - "live a memorable life"

        • OzBargain, jackofspade - keep the costs low & travel longer.
Don't have much, don't need much. No house, no car now, no children or spouse, no real bills or commitments - few choose this life. But I travel most of the year, now for many years.

Work? Wash your mouth out! Well I love work, and do it infrequently. Luckily I can charge a lot for so little, working with very successful people. (Last worked for a day in 2007.) Have just finished intensive training with the idea of working again. But I'll think about it on the next holiday, or the one after!!

Hitch-hiking in rural Japan (easier for me than working out bus timetables), I wanted to visit an historic mountain valley, but all information was in Japanese. At a stall selling local produce, a man recognised me from 2 days before at a museum about that mountain village in the Prefecture capital. He insisted I travel with them as they were a group of travel guides in training, learning about that village. As soon as I boarded their bus, I was given premium beer & food. We then picked up a history expert, and my 11 travel guides took turns translating the wonders of the area to the sole traveller. Not the usual ratio: 11 guides to 1 tourist.

Simply wonderful. But they would not let me pay for anything. That continued as they gave me the best room at the hotel, while they doubled up in other rooms. We ate, drank, and laughed so much that night. When they dropped me by the mountain river (with lots of wild monkeys) that would be my home for a few days, they gave me an envelope - obviously a gift of money. I was embarrassed as I had only given them each 20c koalas that clip onto my name-card. It was $200! I sent them an email expressing my gratitude, and that a gift like that is unusual in my culture. I was told, it is for us to give, and you to receive. I am learning.

While that is not necessarily my usual travel style, I am often called a very lucky traveller. And I do stay in hotels & even rented a small apartment in Singapore for the July trip, so I could enjoy the food festival better.

You don't need much money. I have travelled, ate well & stayed in Malaysia on $20/d. By keeping airfares low (eg $650 AirAsia return to London, $380 Jetstar return to Japan, $160 Scoot return to Singapore) and enjoying life with locals, overall costs are kept low.

Now lets get back to the DEAL!!!

        • Wow, thats incredible! Have much respect for you. Also totally agree with your motto!

        • +2

…and nothing to do with the deal!
My work was in helping others create very successul lives - so for me it is quite normal. In Galway Ireland, I met a woman who simply said she forgot a lot of things. Nothing unusual in that. I realised as adults we live largely boring lives - doing the mundane over and over. There is nothing original to remember, so why wouldn't we forget. But a child is excited by all the new experiences, comes home excitedly with 'Mummy we did this & this…". I decided to "live a memorable life" - not an extraordinary, or different life, just one that would be memorable - at least for me.
Far too much for a deal about cheap flights!

        • I envy you having so much time to travel. I can't wait to escape the rat race.

        • Sometimes it is difficult finding something new to do. 9 months travel overseas most years since 2005 can be a bit like hard work. Research takes time. I am slowing now, spending longer in locations, just sitting with the locals until they come up for a chat. So no need for envy.

I have heard great reports from travellers about the people of Burma, so am looking forward to going there - and this deal has got me as far as Singapore.

        • +1

Long term holidaying beats work any day IMHO. Have to say though planning an itinerary, researching POIs & accomm. is a fair bit of work (and time) in itself before you even go. Great how you have the time to enjoy & take-in the surroundings/culture of a country; something I plan to do soon (or someday) hopefully…

  • How does AirAsia fare in comparison to Scoot? Do people prefer one over the other?

    • +1

Scoot is a lot cheaper from where I am to Asia. But no great difference. I use AA in SE Asia.

My guess is Scoot is modeled on AA. Sometimes, Singapore & Malaysia are like siblings - wanting a bit of what the other has, not wanting to miss out.

Singapore was late to the discount game. When Malaysia & Singapore shared an airline (MSA), I am told LKY wanted to innovate & look outside the Penninsula, but that was not what the Malaysians were interested in - they wanted to serve their people's needs not the International market. So Singapore Airlines was established - bragging twice the Hosties, good food & free drinks on every flight. It grabbed the market.

Air Asia has recently run into some trouble within Malaysia - losing its Europe flights. I am told by insiders that was because the cheap flights affected Malaysia Airlines sales. AA was using unused MA flight slots, and had to give them back. Rumour is that AA will base its European flights out of Indonesia (Bali or Jakata?) & return to those routes soon. So a new cheap flight hub might open up to us. But it may all be complex commercial jockeying - can't see the Malaysian Government wanting KL's LCCT becoming under-used.

      Try 2,3,5,6,7,9,10,12,13 November, 28-30Jan, & 4Feb
      That's even beyond the promotion dates with 10-12 Nov (1-9 November 2012 & 21 Jan - 6 Feb 2013).

LOL Seems someone does not believe Scoot's site or failed to read the dates/ Gold Coast only condition - just check Scoot if you do not believe my research :)
