Received my two orders today; interestingly they have come from "Online Seller" with a Silverwater PO Box via AusPost Express.

Probably explains why they arrived in 4-5 days delivery which was not expected.

So these clearly have not come from overseas and were local stock… Or locally held stock. Packaging tape was over the Auspost labels. No other labelling to indicate overseas package.

    Drives are:
    October 2021 Made in China
    May/June 2021 Made in Thailand

Warranty check on a couple I checked returns the following:

Please contact the place of purchase.
This product was originally sold as a part of a larger system. Please contact the system manufacturer or your place of purchase for warranty support.

I guess that's why EastDigital mentions 3YR EastDigital warranty.

      UPDATE:

I've tested all six drives. I got the x16 16TB drives which arrived this morning (ordered in two orders; one on the 29/12 and the other 30/12).

Very well packaged. Fitted foam [(one box has one drive, another box has two drives)x2] filling up the boxes. My orders have come locally as mentioned above, so these drives must have been held in stock here in Sydney (Silverwater PO address as the sender).

Upon opening, I did a visual check, no marks, prints, dust or the likes on the drives. Three of the drives has slight use signs on the sata/power connectors - not sure if that is from testing or from factory. Three of the other drives did not appear to have these marks.

I ran CrystalDiskInfo 9.2.1 for all six drives individually; all came back as good. Zero power on hours, one power on count, zero host writes/reads/head hours.

So yeah, hopefully all sweet on these drives I received, they sounded normal on power up.

      • Following your updates and thank you for taking the time to write them up.

If possible could you upload a picture of the drives SATA PWR/DATA plugs. You say three appear unworn, and three have signs of wear. I would expect to see no damage from SATA DATA retaining clips while usually bite into the lip (top) of the outer edge of the drives socket.

        • It's very very minor mark on the pin connections, I could try take a photo but now that I've put all six in an external docking station to test them, I've probably rendered that difference obsolete.

I thought I should have taken some photos prior to testing but it was that minor (I was inspecting them with an LED torch) I suspected single connection made to the ports - I'm unsure what Seagate do for testing the drives from factory, but it was just that I noticed 3/6 seemed to not have those minor marks.

I'll try get some photos tonight if it can be shown but yeah the fact I've put them in a docking station may have increased the connector marks.

          • @shiprekt: Which pin set was it, power or data, or both?. The power plug is usually plastic retained by friction, and the data is usually retained by the metal latch.

It's puzzling, I doubt that Seagate plug and remove a combo power/data cable by hand. If each drive was tested, you would think it's robotically inserted or there is some header on the PCB to simplify testing. What ever the process and who does what, you wouldn't expect any damage no matter how minor in a brand new drive. If 50% of the drives are tested without noticeable damage and 50% are, then who tested the drive, and why so rough.

Another good test is to review the screw holes. No one is going to mount a drive using screws to test. In the days of Chia mining, drives were mounted using makeshift racks, or drives holders relying on these screw holes. See: https://www.reddit.com/r/chia/comments/pto8e5/in_china_there…

            • @mrhugo: There was no damage to any plastic or anything, I stress it was very very minor contact marks on the metal pin contacts, what would be normal connecting a drive into a port/tray/cable arrangement. Such as how the female connector houses the sata/power male connectors.

I'm not concerned I just mentioned this as this was my finding when inspecting, a very slight contact line on the contact.

              • @shiprekt: I'm sure I've seen this on normal new drives too, I just always assumed it's how the drives get the SpinUp count of 1 in the factory before you receive them…

                • @Nom: This was my thinking also.

              • @shiprekt: Thanks for that, that's reassuring.

    • +2

Yeah, I have a sneaking suspicion they have someone handling stock for them in Australia. Check out this seller and more so the description-

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/225919155509

      Then check the location :)

      • This makes a lot of sense. I got one tracking number on the 29/12 and another yesterday (02/01) and they both updated with Auspost yesterday and arrived today. So essentially took 15 hours from the new notification yesterday to receiving it in my hand mid morning today…

  • +1

Got my order for 3x14tb delivered today as well but none of them are working.
2 of them are May 2021 and 1 is Feb 2021.
1 produces rhythmic clicking noise (Feb 2021 drive).
2 of them produce buzzing sound periodically (May 2021 drive).
    Shipped from HK via FedEx.
Packaging was fantastic still I suspect damage in transit.

    • +2

That's terrible luck, let's hope East Digital are good on the returns/replacement process. Please update us with how it goes, will be good to know.

    • Damn I was about to order some of those myself. But this gives me pause. What's your plan? Are they asking you to ship them but or will you get a refund?

      • +2

I have reached out to the seller about this. Will see how it goes.

        • +1

Sorry to hear that. As per the above keep us updated with how you go.

        • Was also going to buy. Commenting in here so I get updates, too.

    • ozmma- Just a quick question. Do the drives work other than the noise? Have you had enterprise drives before as they are noisier than standard drives-

      Check here-
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI8WDB1W11w
and the comments in the youtube video

and google Seagate 14TB Exos X16 SATA noise and checkout reddit (result will show for 16TB drives).for comments on noise so you can see what to expect and what may be normal.

      • +1

Yes, I am aware the usual noise. I even have the same exact model already working in my NAS. Disks aren't detected in NAS or Windows(using external SATA dock)

        • +1

          Thanks for clarifying.

      • I dont think he was selling Seagate 14TBs, only saw HGST 530s which have one of the lowest AFR's on the market (0.3%), very unusual for them to all die like that.

        • Checked the disks several times using NAS and windows. I am thinking someone dropped the parcel or handled it rough. I can't come up with any other reason.

          • @ozmma: I did hear similar stories from the last group buy, IIRC one guy ordered 4x new Seagate 16s and the lot were DOA. I thought DOA's were put down to postal carrier, namely Auspost/CP… evidently not…

            • @BargainKen: Last GB through Neology? AFAIK for the last GB he used another supplier half way through. And the last deal he posted at Christmas I assume also would be a different supplier,

If you are talking the last ED deal posted not a single person mentioned an issue with receiving DOA drives nor chasing a warranty claim.

              • +1

@Spizz: I'm referring to the 5th groub buy.

All the drives I've received via ED so far so good.

    • Any news on how the return is going?

      • +1

Seller provided me with the return label to local address. It hasn't reached there yet. Requested for refund.

        • Glad to see they covered postage. I guess that local address is their local eBay username (au_2023) located in Regent Park,NSW.

A local address for warranty returns (depending on how quick they refund you or send you replacement drives) could be the icing on the cake.

          • +1

@Spizz: Seller just gave me the address first. I had to ask for return label which seller happily created one. Rerurn address is KERRIMUIR VIC.

            • +1

@ozmma: Thanks for the update. Interesting ref return address which differs from what I assume is their local eBay listing.

            • @ozmma: It wasn’t PO Box 1 by chance?

    • +1

Just an update for everyone. Got the refund after the drives are verified.

      • Good to hear, got one yesterday and DOA. When connected to PC I can't even boot into bios. Tried different sata controllers and nothing. Just the sound of the drive buzzing but black screen on PC. Hopefully seller is as accommodating.

  • Did anyone get tracking numbers from the Shopify store? If not, then it seems super dodgy. They haven't replied to my messages. All I got when ordering was "thanks for your order".

    • +1

I received tracking numbers when I received the next automated email saying that my order was on the way.

I also received my six drives this morning.

      • +1

As did I. My tracking number was in the with this header- "A shipment from order #1*** is on the way"

        • Yup exactly the same for me, funny thing was though on my second order I received the Auspost email/notification a couple hours before receiving the Shopify automated email saying it was on the way. Confused the hell out of me yesterday.

          • @shiprekt: https://webapp.hongkongpost.hk/en/mail_tracking/index.html

            Tracking showing as-

Date & Time * Location Delivery Status 2

02-01-2024 15:25 HONG KONG Handed over to carrier / Left for destination

            • @Spizz: Did you get the 18tbs?

I have a feeling the 18tbs are coming in from HK. Couple mates ordered 18tbs I think on the 30/12 and I believe have not yet received tracking numbers. Though being so close to new years I assume a few extra days is expected.

              • @shiprekt: Yes I ordered the 18TBs. Look at the tracking above. Looks like there was a delay in it being both received by the post office and the post office sending it and I'm not expecting a quick delivery with Hong Kong Post.

                • +1

@Spizz: New years eve/day surely playing a part there.

                  • @shiprekt: Looks like I may have underestimated Hong Kong Post as it is now in Australia, and if it wasn't for New Years it may have been even quicker again (AusPost is listing an expected delivery Mon-Wed next week)-

                    • @Spizz: I'm glad the Hong Kong shipping is moving quickly as I'm sure that is where mine is coming from… I've still not had my order from the 28th shipped.

Edit: Finally got tracking but no email from ED to advise, only that I'm occasionally refreshing the order confirmation page that I got the tracking number.

                    • @Spizz: Brilliant, that's good to know.

Contemplating getting two more 16tbs haha.

    • I ordered on the 30/12 (#110x) and only just had my order tick over to received, so I reckon they are working through a new years backlog.

  • I ordered 3x 18TB drives from their Shopify store on the 29/12,
They were delivered today 3/1, by FedEx.

All sealed and all look unused,

I've popped one in my NVR and it's building it atm, it shows zero hours used,

My only issue is I'm unable to order more, when I try on the store, it just shows the address as invalid, I've reached out to them over the last week trying to get it sorted, I even showed them 3 other locations around South Australia, and non of them work, so I'm not sure what the deal is.

I've asked them to reach out to Shopify for support, but who knows if they will.

    • +2

Try limiting your order to 3 drives.

      • If I could kiss u @bargainken and @Spizz, I would,

        That sorted it

    • +1

As BargainKen said just limit your order to 3. You gave me a fright that they had finished up their shopify store before I get a chance to order more down the track.

  • Finally, it is showing in the SHOP app, HK post. I guess it there in Hong Kong, and won't be chucked together with the other non-fragile items and arrive damaged like others have reported.

    • At least you now have tracking which should be a relief for you.

“Damaged like others have reported”? AFAIK only 1 person thankfully in this thread has mentioned received non working drives.

  • +1

So we will need to hope that Easterndigital stick around to honour the 3 year warranty

    • Purchased some of my drives with others back on the 7th of Feb 2022. Nearly 2 years already. They've been on eBay for 10 years and counting.

If anyone is worried and wants local warranty backed by Seagate for an extra $250-$300 they can if thats important to them.

  • +1

Got 2 of my 3 orders. The orders 1 and 3 were exos 16TB x16s. Look brand new in every way, sealed, no marks, no marks in mount holes - testing shows zero hours - passed seagate tools testing and crystaldisk.

My other order I haven't even got a tracking number yet (WD 14TBs). Have emailed them but no response yet. Suspect they are probably coming from HK.

  • +1

Ordered on Wednesday. Arrived today. Ran CrystalDisk and says 0 hours

    • Nice. Fedex? What size did you get?

  • Very impressed with the shipping packaging for my 18tb drive. While it took a long time to get tracking, once it came through it was delivered the following day as it shipped from Melbourne. I believe they may have send a bulk of drives to Melbourne and shipped them to the orders from there. Must have been a fair few of us ordering.

  • +1

Yeh shipping on my 18tb from Melbourne was amazingly packed too. Boxed/thick foam. Took me awhile to get shipping too. Ordered 28th Dec. Arrived today.

  • 2 x 18tb x18 arrived yesterday in melbourne 0 hours. working great. june 2021 date

  • Just received my 2 18TB drives. Took 10 days to arrive via Hong Kong Post. Extremely well packaged as per usual-

    https://ibb.co/2gnQ85d

Drives are mint. June 2021 as per other above. Won't be testing the drives for a few weeks though.

    • I'm still waiting - ordered on the 30th Dec. Did anyone get a tax invoice?

      • Did you follow it up via email? I got no shipping confirmation for one of my orders. Emailed them asking about it and the same day they replied with tracking (received package today).

        • ordered 2 - only 1 came even though the docket says contents 2 HDD. The box only had space for 1. Took a photo and emailed them. Will see what happens

  • +1

Received my 2x 14 TB WD HC530 refurbs - both dated Nov 2020. Have passed all tests so far, extremely quiet too.

The scary thing is - both came in the same factory sealed packaging as my new exos… also no noticeable markings on the pins nor screw holes so I am not feeling as good about confirming the newness of the exos with these same features lol.

Power on hours for the HC530s - 22,000. Power on count 20. Have run them through a few testing programs and all have come back good. Overall very happy with my purchase for the price - will see how these go in my system and will definitely get some more from this seller in future.

  • +1

Far out looks like their website is down - links don't work, is this correct?

    Only received half my order

    • offline here too. i got my drives. i was actually impressed and wanted some more. spinups = 13, no errors. nice.

  • So I got one of these and went to install it today, think I might have DOA drive..

Wired it into my Desktop, can see it in Disk Management, but gets an I/O error when I go to initialise.. and also fails all Seatools tests :(

    • EXOS X18 or another drive?

      • +1

exos x18 - has now been sent back as a return, they supplied sent a reply paid label which was good.

      • and they sent me back a replacement which is working fine :)

  • +1

I got my two 18TB X18s on the 11th, ordered on Dec 28th.

Everything seems good with them, the packaging was great, the drives appear new and I've had them running most of the last 24hrs transferring stuff onto them.

They definitely aren't as loud as I thought they'd be.

Even though two set me back more $ than I had planned on spending off a spur-of-the-moment sale, I wouldn't have minded a third one so I could put them in their own external enclosure with better formatting. However, then I'd have to follow through on one of the DIY DAS/NAS builds that I've been going over the last few weeks. Maybe too much money then. Nonetheless, very satisfied thus far.

$574 total for the two drives. $287 per X18, sounds like the new price to beat.

  • +1

Site back up. Price for the 18TB has increase yet again. Started at $276 now at $309.

  • The prices of these HDDs are still good even after their frequent increases (still cheaper than their ebay).
I'm building a NAS at the moment and need storage between 12TB and 16TB.

    My options are:
    1- 4x 4TB WD Red Plus (256MB Cahce) in RAIDZ1 configuration (~$650)
    2- 2x 16TB Seagate X18 in MIRROR configuration ($584)
    3- 2x 16TB WD Ultrastar HC550 in MIRROR configuration ($428) [2200 hours and 11 power on cycles]

Option 1 is brand new which gives me piece of mind. But option 2 gives me more storage and is cheaper; however in case of drive failure it will cost me more to replace. Option 3 is the cheapest but apparently it is the noisiest one as well.

Just wondering what the experts here recommend? People who have recieved their HDDs, what's the condition of the drives? has anyone found any issues with them?

  • +1

Credit to the store - they shipped out my other drive very quickly and were accountable for not sending it with my first drive. good service.
