Thanks just what I was looking for, and the one pass no minimum free delivery came in handy for a change

  • Can this handle hot boiling water??

    • Yes

      • Will it make the outside hot as well or is it well insulated?

        • +3

It's borosilicate glass. It's not insulated.

    • +4

Yes, Its the good stuff Borosilicate glass, the stuff they use to make lab equipment.

    • +2

….as opposed to 'cold' boiling water?

      Sorry…..lol.

  • Decided to click and collect instead of onepass delivery. Avoiding the risk of the glass breaking during transit.

    • OnePass will cover the refund for any damages during the transit.

      • you get your $4 back, plus a box of broken glass which you have to clean up. Thanks One Pass Love ya!

        • Kmart Onepass sent two A76 batteries in a box H 12cm x 24 W & D box and marked as fragile when the battery package was 5cm x 7-8cm and less than 1cm. Box arrived crushed and empty. 2nd attempt success. Why not just a flat envelope???

  • Would they fit within the fridge door?

    • +3

10cm Diameter idk you fridge mate.

      • -1

I have seen jugs in shops that say they fit within the door as a feature. Each to their own.

    • The handle doubles the jug's size.

  • I've had this before. Used to store boiling water. looks good

    • not ideal for storage of hot water, consider a thermos.

      • its Borosilicate glass its literally fine for boiling water…

        • +1

the glass won't break under the heat stress due to the addition of boron, however that is beside the point. Thin glass like this is terrible for storage of any hot liquid. To store a hot liquid you need an insulated vacuum flask.

  • Cheers got one, does the lid fully seal?

    • +1

No it doesn't. You can easily pour contents without removing lid on the one I have.

Got two, thank you OP. I make jasmine/oolong/earl grey tea in jugs like these with boiling hot water so they need to be glass, but I do tend to smash them over time so I always keep a few glass jugs handy for when I smash the current set! The last one I broke was when I tried to grab it without looking, I ended up knocking it over and… gone.

If you want to get the most out of tea, try 70°c for the greens, 60°c for the blacks and 80°c for the herbals. 100°c is unnecessarily high and kills/mutates good stuff.

      • Interesting… Everywhere I had looked said 80° for green tea… But, regardless, one is very unlikely to attain any such precision in a home kitchen; by the time you pour the water in the jug, it's already dropped quite a few degrees.

        • Lower temp is not an issue, the initial heat would activate whatever is in the tea and get the process started. Problem arises when it’s too high. Think pasteurised milk 🤮

          • @frugalftw: Cleopatra then?

            • +1

@wisdomtooth: It’s been replaced by a cold-pressed non-homogenised one, at least the last time I tried to look for it. https://www.madebycow.com.au/cold-pressed-raw-milk-products Did not cause issues in my body last time I had a whole bottle.

              • @frugalftw: Yeah, I've had Made by Cow. You reckon it's better (or safer) than Cleopatra? Have you dug into what happens to milk proteins in pasteurisation? Does that not happen with Made by Cow's microfiltration?

                • +1

@wisdomtooth: I think it depends on the freshness, because milk does degrade over time. The cold pressed one might be better if you have to store it for a bit. A bottle of 4-day old cold-pressed milk does less harm than a 4-day old Cleopatra. Thing is we are not privy to the information as to how long it’s been since the milk has left the cow. I’d still go for cleopatra, but can’t source it.

Heat denatures protein and kills microbes, which makes it harder for the body to process. Microbes are an important part of the digestive process, they are just a bunch of organism that swims in their own stomach acid because they don’t have a stomach inside. We labels them as either good or bad depending on whether or not their metabolic waste is considered useful to us. But of course it is way more convoluted than that, it’s an ecosystem, and as far as an ecosystem is concerned, it’s never a good idea to single out any single species.

There’s a reason lots of people prefer medium rare steak over well-done, and salad over soup. They might not know why but their bodies do.

  • thanks op bought 1 even though I know I'd crack it at some stage, let's hope no flesh is left bleeding.

From the image it seems that the spout does not have filter? insects could get in?

    • improvise - I would use the cling wrap already cut out in squares when I'm not knitting and then just seal it.
I was thinking of leaving this in the fridge mostly with juices or tea

    • Didn't realise they've changed it then, the older one I have from a while back looks pretty similar expect the lid is taller and has two "outlets" on opposite sides, one open, one dotted (to block ice for example). It's actually kinda annoying as the water doesn't come out smoothly.

(On closer look can see this one has a ribbed pattern, yuck lol)

  • Not a fan of the unsealed spout. I guess this is why it's clearance stock because it's poor design . And that handle…is massive lol

    • Have seen this in store.

Likely also clearance because it doesn't fit everyone's aesthetic. Which is to say I personally found it really ugly.

  • Thanks op. Managed to get 2 via click and collect. The glass itself is a bit thin but overall looks to be good quality.

  • Had a look at this in store. Didn’t like it. Lid is plastic underneath with a (silicone?) seal. Glass is also quite thin.

This is a better jug for $1 less at normal price https://www.kmart.com.au/product/17l-glass-fridge-jug-431193…

    • But for this one: Not suitable for microwave, dishwasher or hot liquids. Might be okay if you don't need these.

  • Thanks I grabbed 3 and other clearance items also.

Clearance items are 33~50% of RRP.
