Used this a few years so in my Xbox. Works good.

  • wow, shortest deal? :-/

    • Not much of a deal. You can get something from aliexpress for a fraction of that price. Or do none of the common ones fit in an xbox?

      • Yeh that was my thought. I bought some ages ago but the other way, to use PATA drives on SATA, and were only a couple of bucks each.

Worked well though, was making use of old DVD burners, so goes to show how long ago :)

Its hit and miss with the cheaper ones apparently, the startech always seem to work and they allow a faster boot.

      • +3

As said above, the cheap unbranded ones typically don't have a Master/Slave jumper (so don't work) or if they do work, can be very slow. So this StarTech adapter along with one or two others are recommended… but as they normally sell for $44 this was a good deal! (Plus lowest price in AU according to the Camels)

        • Yes as someone who was using the cheap ones who had issues - swapping to the Startech one works so much better.

Half of the boot time, the really cheap ones do not have a master/slave select which is required for the cloning part (cable select CAN work if you've already cloned the drive). I've been sent the incorrect one a few times and I've had one work so far (Have soft-modded around five Xboxes so far).

The slightly more expensive ones are more likely to work; however I've had them arrive DOA and also have issues copying to the point that I'm switching consoles to clone HDD's and whatnot.

The PCB Quality is a lot nicer and it's slimmer as well (but admittedly more flimsy, since it's not got the plastic bracket around the IDE pins) but this is obviously to make it more slim.

The other benefit is that you do not need a molex Y-Cable for when cloning on an original Xbox as the cable it uses is a Y Splitter effectively. The cheap ones do not have this so it is a consideration.

I REALLY wish I was able to get another one of these (for $23) as I have another Xbox I'm going to hard mod for myself. The others at this point are all for parts.

      • The other brand ones are known to have compatibility issues with the Xbox. So not really relevant.

        • Do I use this adapter for a PS2?

          • @tunzafun001: I brought an adapter that converts the offical Sony network/HDD adapter to SATA.

There’s also complete replacements if you don’t have the offical adapter (but no networking port, not that really matters now days).

    • That's why this adapter exists - to replace an 8Gb IDE HDD with an SSD :-)

      • I'm not up with OG Xbox mods but whats the point of an SSD really? It's still not going to make the IDE interface (133MB/s) any faster than a modern crappy 5400rpm drive.

Having said that SSD is probably more reliable these days and slightly more responsive.

You're right, it's not a big difference; a 5400rpm SATA drive on an 80pin IDE cable is near the controllers limit. But as I have a few SSDs from retired/dead laptops, might as well!

@stokesy77: Just make sure to use small SSD in some cases due to BIOS limitations. For example, 8 GB BIOS limitation etc. I had to get small SSD from Aliexpress for such cases and feels like they are a better choice than CF cards.

One of my laptops had 4200 rpm 1 GB HDD, even the cheapest 4 GB CF card made it a lot faster, but the speed was limited by the 16 MB RAM lol.

        • the point is Cheap storage :) some of the cheap no name brand SSDs may even be more reliable than an 80 gig IDE drive thats been sitting around for Eons :)

        • I'm not up with OG Xbox mods but whats the point of an SSD really?

It doesn’t have to be an SSD. I used a SATA HDD.

    Looks pretty easy to make

Seriously? There’s a 100-pin IC and 50 microscopic SMDs. You must be good with a soldering iron!

    • +5

These are highly recommended in the OG Xbox modding community. I haven’t seen anyone say they’ve lost all their data. Why make shit up?

      • The proper rhyme is ‘Molex to SATA, lose all your data’ (and possibly your house) - due to the fire risk of non-crimped connections that can arc and cause a fire.

you can just use $5 ones from Aliexpress, just make sure to get ones based on JM20330 chipset. I have used couple of them on my Retro PC projects and OG XBOX (500 GB) with OpenXenium. Still working well!

    • Same adapter for chucking some old PS2 games on to a HDD?

      • sorry I don't have any experience with PlayStation. If it is a normal IDE interface, it should work. Please note that OG XBOX is just a Pentium 3 733 MHz PC with 64 MB RAM, not a specialised console in that sense.

      • No - for a FAT PS2 - I.E a 30000 or a 50000 you just need to get the Gamestar PS2 to Sata adapter that you find on ebay.

If you've already got the genuine PS2 Network adapter that's got the IDE plug, you can get a replacement PCB for that part and swap the IDE port out for a sata upgrade.

The Gamestar ones work fine, I ended up having one arrive DOA (damaged SATA port) and I tried to be cheap and get one from Aliexpress and it never showed.

If you're using a 2.5 inch drive you can 3d print (or purchase) a bracket to let it sit in better. The only real downside is you need to remove and reinstall the drive to add games.

        • Yeah, I ordered a Gamestar type adapter (IDE interface). Ordered a IDE to SATA convertor from eBay… Never arrived..and scum bay kept the refund (as I used my eBay plus sign up voucher). So need to find a IDE to SATA adapter.

@tunzafun001: Go with this - it's a bit more then ebay, etc but Jeffy will sort you out if it doesn't arrive. It's where I got mine from.

Startech makes quality parts but they are ridiculously overpriced …

    I bought 10 of these

    https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005066835576.html?spm=a2g…

years ago and still going strong in all my retro PCs. Total cost for 10 of them is only a bit more than one from ST.

    • +1

same here, these are JM20330 as shown in the photos.

    • They're probably OK for retro PC's but I can tell you first hand that for Original Xboxes you want the startech one. I had nine Original Xboxes (parts + working ones for friends to soft mod) and I originally got the generic IDE to SATA adapter from ebay. It worked well for mine, but had a notable slow boot.

The issue is that the next four that I got only two worked. My original one ended up burning out (burned my finger on it) while swapping the hard drive out and no longer works. I got mad and spent $40 on this and it boots so much faster and let me clone a drive without issue whereas I had issues for the others. This also would save you buying a molex splitter if you don't have one too.

Of note; if you are soft modding an Xbox you'll need a 80 wire IDE cable too, as well as a controller port to USB adapter, flash drive (2GB ideally) and a copy of splinter cell. If going with a generic adapter you'll want a molex splitter if you don't have one.
