Wow 29kg! How does amazon deliver this? Thats a 2 man lift.

    • +16

Self employed people required to get people to cover themselves (Who don't and just destroy their body's).

      • that's true

    • The DCP-L3560CDW was a little over 20kg in its big box and wasn't too hard for me to take it down three flights to my study

    • +1

Depends if you skip arm day 💪

      • +5

Back day, bro. Arms are for sho

    • There is no chance this gets delivered by Amazon logistics. They will use a third party courier.

      • I remember when I bought the Brother MFC-L8690CDW (with a weight similar to the MFC-L8900CDW) from Amazon, it was delivered by StarTrack.

      • +1

Yeah, you can tell it is getting delivered by an external courier because the delivery date is longer than usual and it also states:

Available to ship in 1-2 days

        Most likely Toll.

    • +6

29kg is a 2 man lift? When did we get so soft?

      • +6

it is not just the weight though. It is the size of the box.
A 75 modern inch TV will be lighter but impossible to carry safely by one person.

    • I've carried dozens of this up and down flights of stairs. Out of the box they're really not that bad.

      • What?

        • The box these come in is massive and you really need 2 people to move them. Once the heavy box and excess packaging is gone they're easy af to carry.

          • @Clear: no struggle carrying 29kg up and down flights of stairs?

            • @welikedeals: More like 28kg without packaging but yes no difficulty because you can easily hold it with 2 hands. It's not too wide.

    • No that's a 2 boy or girl lift. If a man can't lift 29kgs I assume it's because they have a prior injury somewhere.

    • Using a trolley.

  • Thanks ! Been watching this for some time. Nice price drop.

  • Thanks OP. Does anyone know offhand what the replacement toners cost ? (just a ballpark figure).

      • Many thanks

      • nice, reasonable price

    • One arm and one leg. Probably better off investigating aftermarket toner. And keep the original toners in case you need warranty.

    • +1

      About $80 on eBay.

    • +2

I bought a MFC-L3770CDW and tried two different types of non-genuine toners and found they caused massive colour-banding or left random splotches across the page. I ended up going back to genuine, but found them from sellers on eBay where I could use Plus coupons and discounted giftcards to bring the overall cost down by 50%. Sometimes it's just worth saving yourself from the hassle and using genuine but your own mileage may vary, though, so go ahead and try the 3rd party consumables and see if they work.

      • Oh no. I bought the same printer recently. Where did you get your aftermarket toners from that didn't work properly?

Edit: just checked and I actually got the MFC-L8690CDW.

        • A random eBay seller who had very cheap cartridges, and Toner Stop where I've purchased black toner refills from previously (they also trade as Aussie Toner).

  • +2

Nice workhorse indeed. We have one of these at our office - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/brother-co… - for those on a tighter budget ($499). Also has Duplex printing. Not sure if you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Been rock solid and easy to maintain and setup.

    • +5

Careful on the MFC-l3760CDW, it doesn't have Duplex scanning (for that it's the MFC-L3770CDW)

      • Good to know on both. I've recently been looking at the MFC-L3760CDW but I may consider the MFC-L3770CDW now based on that. Just a matter of trying to hunt it down for a good price.

      • Thanks for this. Saved me searching around for that exact answer 😊

    • I got this for a relative and it prints well.

However, every now & then, the toner is "running out".

Then, aftermarket toners are not just not as the same quality
or the colours just look a bit botched.

Any tips on which toners to try / buy ?

  • +3

For those of you considering this printer for duplex ADF scan to email, please note that full speed is only possible with an Ethernet connection. Scanning is slow af on wifi.

It’s a great printer, I’ve had one since 2020 and haven’t looked back.

    • Can you confirm if the OP’s model has duplex scanning? I need a cheap colour laser printer with ADF duplex scanning. Thanks in advance

      • +2

Yes it does, it has single pass duplex scanning. I mainly use my printer for that function

  • +2

Take my advice for these printers.
Theyre good initially but freaken expensive for everything including cartridges.

I got my work to update our printers to the epson ecotank ET5800… every ink bottle is like 18-24 bucks each.

So far weve been running it for over a month and still have 1/3 ink left from factory (comes with half fill).

Also has an extra tray and scanning abilities…

Imo don't waste your time with these!

The epson at my work gets a massive workout as we are always printing proofs for art and invoices (busy company).

One by one the brothers are going in the bin.

They last about a year but the overall cost is massively higher than an ecotank even in that year.

    • +13

You are aware that you are comparing a colour laser to an inkjet, right?

      • +1

Completely aware but the overall cost in a busy business means the brother is a massive rip off.

My work place had them for 4 years before realising the inkjet is the way to go.

Not sure why my comment is getting negged… trying to save people money here.

Suit yourselves I lived and breathed the brothers

        • +2

You are getting negged because people translate black & white laser to the same with colour lasers.

In my experience unless you need to print colour all the time best to get a b&w laser work horse. Then have a dedicated color printer for those occasions.

If you are printing black & white out of a colour laser than just waste and also increasing wear and tear on the laser printer.

          • +2

@netjock: You started by seemingly defending @sirstiv's position, but then you basically said "buy 2 lasers, one B&W and one colour".

If you are "printing proofs for art" like @sirstiv, sure, get an inkjet. This is not what a typical consumer uses a colour printer to do, though.

        • +1

Kinda cheap looking though printing client facing documents with inkjet.

        • No one force you buy Brother original costly plastic powders.

    • +4

I moved from Epson to brother colour lasers, best thing i did

      • How long have you had them?
You must enjoy paying big bucks for toner for the same results!

        • Is brother still blocking aftermarket toners? or is there a workaround?

          • @John Doh: Brother is known for not blocking, at least relative to HP.

        • +1

160$ for 10,000 pages nah. It's well know the economical side of tonner even oem

          • +1

            @DoesntEvenMatter: 160 per colour …. for brother

18 bucks per colour for the epson
Epson does 4500 in black and 2800 in colour on a half fill for comparison.

My work place was going through all colours every 3 months. Absolute RORT.

            • +2

@sirstiv: 160 for the set. Justify inkjet for yourself. I'll never go back to it. Fast colour print, nice and crisp printouts and bonus it's nice and warm. Laser is also the only correct choice if you don't print daily! You can even get a toner set for 60$. No mess replace instead of refilling the wells. Also life runtime will be way shorter for that inkjet vs a laser.

              • +1

@DoesntEvenMatter: My last Brother colour laser lasted a whole 15 months. So glad to have the nonsense with those behind me.

                • @Mostly Fanless: What you running now?

                  • +1

@sirstiv: ET-3800. Replaced a B&W Brother and a colour Brother. So much smaller, cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable as well! Home office use, so far only needed one black refill in 18 months.

              • @DoesntEvenMatter: It's 160 per colour dude. Not third party ones.

    • +5

Good if you print a lot but laser any day over inkjet for infrequent printing.

    • Had some great long term success with an office full of Workforce Pro Epson WP 4530 that had big cartridges. The colour inkjet heads havent lasted but OK as BW. Laser printers also kill your budget with maintenance costs other then toner, ie drums etc, often better to chuck and get another deal.
With the ecotanks what are the consumables - ink and waste container? anything else.
Is anyone doing aftermarket ink for the ecotanks?

      • +1

I saw third party bottles but they are so cheap you may aswell get the legit ones. ($18-24 per colour / bottle)

The consumables for the ecotank are just raw ink in a bottle and maintenance box from memory.

You fill it up and you're good to go. Setup takes about 10m for first setup but from there it's easy.

Install the driver suite to give you access to diagnostics. Where you can clean the head etc if you have any blocked lines.

I looked up potential ink head replacements in future and they also seem pretty cheap.

Not to mention the extra tray in the et-5800 which the brother doesnt have.

        Scans fast too.

The brother toners @ 160 a pop means that you'll quickly double or triple the cost of the printer within a year if you're printing everyday in a busy environment.

I tried to repair my brother with third party drums and belts and I could never fix them either without going legit was too much.

        • there is a review on google (from officeworks purchaser) that was using the ET5800 for borderless A4 and after an unstated period the machine states the edge pads are full and require replacing. ( In the US firmware an overide service code could be used - but not in Australia) and Epson charged $500 replacement! User Manual says The printer's borderless printing ink pad is nearing the end of its service life. It is not a user-replaceable part. Please contact Epson support. No indication what the service life of borderless printing and if is relevant if you do no borderless A4 printing. Doing my own research it seams that what epson has done with Ecotank models is now incorporate continuous ink systems into their models. It would seem that the same style small ink cartridge style ink heads are used and are being feed with tubes to the small cartridges that go into the printheads. My experience with Epson inkjets todate over a 10 year period is that they all eventually have print head clogging problems. It will be interesting to see if the ecotanks are the same. The fact that there are youtube videos out there showing how to dismantle the ET5800 and remove the small "ink cartridges" from the print head and flush the print head nozzles suggest that the ecotanks may not be different long term. The waste maintenance box on the ET5800 has a chip in it but cant work out if this is triggered by a volume amount by the firmware or moisture in a pad on a contact ( this could be be bypassed in the WP4530 by putting a container in the maintenance box that caught the ink so the pads never became saturated.) Just my thoughts.

          • @ocular: Theres no cartridges…
Theres not many parts in these printers.
In a work environment borderless printing is not required.

Regarding lines getting clogged - yea that may happen but you run the diagnostic and it clears. I have 2 ecotanks at work. One et5800 and one entry level one. The entry level one has had a clogged line once in the last 3 months and after i ran the diagnostic its fine.

How does this compare to something like the L8390? https://amzn.asia/d/72EUBSN

Looking for a laser printer for the home that won't be used a whole lot, but when used would like duplex scanning and printing.

Edit: are brother still the "best" with their enshittification and locking out 3rd party toners?

    • +5

They're just as bad about locking out 3rd party toners, the trick is to never update the firmware (or, turn off the auto-update feature). Future firmware 'updates' are often just an exercise at better detecting non-genuine consumables and making it hard to use them.

      • Good point about the firmware updates. Never even thought of that.

  • +1

Great Printer - I use the Brother MFC-L8690CDW myself which is nearly identical. It is available for $604 at Good Guys Commercial.

    • Same, have the 8690.
heavy yes - however once placed in your office, it's good as gold. bulky yes. but Very reliable.
Downside is that cartidges are on the exxy side.
OW from memory was around$150 per cartridge and there were 4 to replace.
Tried a few non-OEM cartridges from ebay etc.. and the printer didn't take too kindly to those and was not as a good quality print. bled.

  • Bought one. Replacing a Brother MFC-L3770CDW which worked well from 2019 till 2023 and then started having duplex scanning issues and leaky toners. I did temporarily fix these but they come back within a month. As this is part of a business I can write off for new and retire the old one. Note I do not use Brother branded toners and they do 'enshitten' with firmware using non-brand toners but the toner people do catchup fairly quick.

I have yet to notice 'improvements' by any firmware update as it was never buggy to begin with.

I use all the features (Fax, Scan, Copy, Cloud). The only unneeded feature for me is NFC which I never used. I use it through Ethernet so will be nice to go from 100 Mbit to Gigabit ethernet.

  • Thanks OP got it at Officeworks for $692 delivered. Moving home (UK - have a container so space not an issue) same printer at home is $1,500!!

  • +1

Good price. My Brother MFC-L3770CDW still going strong, bought when covid started for home office.

  • Colour ink is usually more expensive.

  • +3

For those with the space, it's worth considering a second-hand business photocopier instead of a new desktop MFC. A few years ago I bought a (100kg) Ricoh MPC2504 for something like $300, and the ongoing toner costs have been minuscule in comparison.

  • Can anyone recommend an A3 printer that also does A4? With all the function of the above printer included. It's hard to find them or don't know what to look for.

    • +1

Go to Brother website and select the filter, pick A3 printing. A3 can always print A4.

  • was checking the detailed spec on brother website and found this:

    2,400dpi (2,400 x 600) default

not an expert myself . but is this a good printing quality? if not, what's a good quality DPI value?

    • its good.

  • Weird question I know, but is a $728.85 MFC-L8900CDW better or worse value than a $210 HL-L3230CDW
    I know it's a Hyundai and a Mercedes.
Which one is better bang for buck as I've probably got both potential options. I want my wife that'll use it to have the best available option. She is the art/design space. Is it $518.85 better though?

    • The HL-L3230CDW is discontinued now, wont find it at $210 anywhere, might find it on ebay for $400. Hard to quantify which is better value, both do different things. But, I have been very curious myself to know if the output print quality is any different between these 2 machines (ie: is the laser print technology the same on both machines).

    • +1

Laser is more for spot color documents.

      Artwork/photos, go with ecotank

    • One is substantially faster than the other, duplex scan and print.

  • I’ve used one of these for a few years. Great printer. I use the inkstation compatible cartridges and have never had an issue. Maybe don’t last as long as the genuine but quality is perfect.

  • I have this printer it is very reliable and the cheap ebay refill cartridges work perfectly.

  • Does this have double-sided scanning through the document feeder?

I read the specs but just want to be sure.

    • +1

Yes it scans both sides at once.

  • We purchased this printer for $747 from Amazon on the recent black friday deal. It does a nice job. I printed 30 colour brochures of 10 pages each with pictures and despite the reviews saying photos aren't great, the brochures were really good.

We live in an apartment and the hotel next door handles the Australia Post mail and if there is a parcel too big for the letterbox they put a ticket in. We were away and I got an email to say it had been delivered. When we got home a week later the hotel didn't have the printer. Toll tracked down the driver who had left it with a random business downstairs. The driver managed to retrieve it and deliver it to the hotel.

  • Price is 1029 now.

  • Available again.
