If you fill it up with data that doesn't change and you want to backup forever at the end of the 6 months it will all stay but you can't add to it. Put it on a new google account and you have 2tb of long term storage that doesn't cost anything unlike amazon s3.

Seems pretty useful if you plan ahead. Use cryptomator when you upload and it is encrypted so even google can't even see what is on it. I am thinking about backuping up all my old photos and such from my home server just in case anything happens to it.

      • +9

Good idea until your home server fails and you log onto your "new Google account" just to find that Google has dumped all of your files months ago because you're no longer paying for your storage.

FWIW, if your data is valuable, don't rely on a hack / loophole / exploit which can be closed at any time. Either implement your own offsite backup solution, or pay for a cloud backup solution with a reliable provider.

        • +6

I never said that would be my only backup. But why not use it and add another bit of redundancy for free?

If they delete your files you will get a notification before the fact and they give you 2 years of being over quota so at least 2.5 years of free storage. You could pay for one month of storage when you get the warning to reset and get 2 more years of free storage, in that month you can also update your backup if you need to.

I'm not saying it's a perfect backup solution but many people could find a use for it. But if google went around deleting peoples drives willy nilly nobody would use them.

"If you’re over your quota for 2 years or longer: If you don't free up or purchase more space to get back under quota, all of your content may be removed from Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive (this includes Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, and Jamboard files).

Before your content is removed, we:

Give you notice using email and notifications within the Google products. We will contact you at least three months before content is eligible for deletion.
Give you the opportunity to avoid deletion (by paying for additional storage or removing files)
Give you the opportunity to download your content from our services. Learn more about how to download your Google data."

            @denserham:

I never said that would be my only backup. But why not use it and add another bit of redundancy for free?

It's not just about you though - I'm simply informing people who may be thinking of using this as their primary backup solution after reading your post to think twice about the possible consequences.

But if google went around deleting peoples drives willy nilly nobody would use them.

It's not willy nilly if you never actually paid for the storage in the first place, and only obtained it through an exploit.

Obviously there is a huge difference between someone who has paid for 2TB of storage and entered into a contract with Google to have their files stored (even if over quota) for 2 years, vs. someone who used a tokenized exploit of the Google Play store to get 2TB of storage for free.

Ultimately, I'm indifferent on the use of the exploit - it's Google's problem and theirs to solve. However, I think you're not thinking straight if you really believe that Google will treat you as a paying customer when you've only gained access to their services through an exploit.

If its photos you need to backup, invest in a second hand Pixel with free unlimited Google Photos backup lifelong. Worth it hassle free option. Yes, it costs but not constantly and not lifelong. I think Pixel 5 may have been the last one with it or thats when it stopped but you could get an older Pixel for the same benefit.

        • +2

Yeah it is a good option but I don't want to upload all my photos to google unencrypted. Unless I goto the effort of doing something like this

I think you need an original pixel from 2016 to upload uncompressed photos for free.

          • @denserham: So you can buy a 2016 pixel that someone has unlimited backup to then i get unlimited also? Or the phone has to be active in your name/email to access it.

            • +1

@Jklaro: Yes, you can also root another phone and spoof that it is a pixel 1 and get the same benefit.

        • But then you need find a way to automate a process where you upload via that Pixel alone.

          • @txb: I think I had seen someone talk about using a file backup service to transfer photos at your home via wifi to your pixel and then auto-backup up to Google Photos

  • I still have storage from previous deal, just getting email saying over limit every week. Doubt I can add anything but have all my photos backed up atm.

Only the original Pixel has unlimited uncompressed photos backup. The T&C changed w/ the second generation: they get unlimited but subject to compression free photo storage.

So the gold standard is the original Pixel - and that's why I've seen some sell for $200+

        • +1

This is the safest and most legitimate way of backing up photos and videos. I have a Pixel 1 and use Syncthing to sync our photos and videos to it for free unlimited original resolution backup. Really useful as 4k and 8k video recording becomes the norm on phones.

          • @10101010101: So you use Syncthing to move photos and videos onto the phone [over USB? Wifi?] and then Google Photos on the Pixel uploads them to the cloud uncompressed, presumably with the Pixel being SIM free and using your wireless ?

I have a Pixel handset but have yet to sort the "deployment" out - are photos/videos that get uploaded automatically deleted off the Pixel by Google? Any gotchas?

            • +1

@kale chips suck: Syncthing copies automatically from my phone and wife's phone to the pixel over wifi. The pixel has Google photos installed with backup enabled for the Syncthing folders. The Pixel doesn't auto delete the photos and videos from the phone nor does Syncthing from my phone or my wife's phone. We both have large storage on our devices (512gb-1tb) so we don't really find ourselves needing to delete. Every now and then I go and use Google photos on the pixel to cleanup backed up items. It's a simple couple of clicks to do so.

Main issue is the time consuming process to back up your initial backlog of photos and videos. My Pixel has 128gb storage and probably only 90gb usable so I had to manually copy from my PC to the Pixel over USB in 90gb increments, let the pixel upload, purge from the Pixel and then repeat the process. Took a couple of months for 4tb of photos and videos. Fortunately I had 100/40 NBN uncapped at the time as it chews through bandwidth and transfer allowance. I'm now on 5G home internet which is capped to 1Tb so I wouldn't attempt to upload 4tb of data again.

              • @10101010101: Awesome, appreciate the overview.

I guess my brain struggles with the 'mirroring' side of Google photos; where photos are purged locally b/c they're backed up online. I'm used to Gdrive where something deleted locally is also deleted from the online space.

I'll have to dig through the photos app some more I think!

              • @10101010101: The 90gb at a time wld be bcoz yr not deleting as you go tho, right?

I.e. if GPhotos set to delete local, as it uploads, wouldn't that be faster?

                • @nessism: From memory I don't think you can set auto delete on Google photos on the pixel 1. But perhaps I'm wrong.

  • Is it me or are the payment options in Vietnamese?

      đúng rồi

      • I was in Sang Bang….Dang Gong…I was all over the place.

  • +6

    They cancelled it last time

  • +13

for large cloud storage, if it only lasts for short period of time, i cannot understand why we upload data to it

  • After the 6 months, can we cancel but still get access to pics etc of what we've saved in the cloud? Just not as anything extra?

  • +3

Suggest to try it on a new account not your regular one, last time there was a hack deal, google blocked those email addresses for policy breach.

  • +3

what's the benefit of having that storage for 6 months? Once the plan expires, you have to migrate all those files somewhere else.

    • +1

My storage now is 5380% used, I can still access all files. I signed up with this deal, my NBN plan at that time was 100/20. If it were the current 250/100 plan, I could upload more files.

      • +1

You can access it now. What if Google decides to do a data clean-up of their warehouse? They surely are not going to let you use 30 TB of storage for eternity.

    • WORM storage (Write once, read many)
Whatever you upload there will stay there even after the plan expires.
You can't add or modify anything, unless you would delete the files to get under your new quota.
But for things you don't want to modify - i.e. photos from last year vacation, you can upload them during the large quota period, and they will remain there accessible even after those 6 months.

  • You're not eligible for the free trial

  • +2

Maybe best way is new account, then setup family with yourself to share the Google one storage

The world's most pointless thing - short-term large cloud storage

    • Not really, as per this comment, It is going to be permanent storage forever, only thing you can't add or change any, but you can access that 2 TB forever.

        Until you can’t.

      • Yeah, so you can't update it or the like. Who does backup/storage like that? Just bizarre.

Not to mention all of the "they cancel this" comments, making the uploading even more stupid.

      • Yeah, great point, assuming "forever" includes values of "a couple of days."

  • +3

Every other hack they’ve cancelled within days. Why wouod this be different ?

  • Other than the 2TB of storage, you'd also get 10% back on store purchases. Not bad for free if you were wanting to buy something.

  • +1

Ah s***, here we go again

  • It's been fixed.

  • Still works. Thanks. Applied to four Google accounts.

    • And they all cancelled them now.

      • But I can confirm, it still works. Great for backing up "files" for storage that you wouldn't edit or amend.

  • brb, getting popcorn

  • i got "You're not eligible for the free trial"

  • +1

Received the "Your membership ended" and "Cancellation" emails a few hours ago, was nice while it lasted…

  • +1

    Membership got refunded and cancelled.

  • +1

    Yup, mine got cancelled too!

  • Great for my back up, thanks
