I'll preface by saying I was reluctant making this post as we all know the Super variants are launching soon (with the 4080S launching on the 31/1) and the smart thing to do is to wait for the launch and reviews before making a decision but hear me out…

Looking at the specs of the 4080S it seems like we might see a 5-7% improvement vs vanilla 4080 so really we're all waiting on the Super variant for the price cut and not the performance improvement. The US MSRP is $999 so doing a direct conversion and slapping on the GST we should expect to see the cards launch at ~$1650 however if you were to actually go on NV's website NV being NV have the Australian MSRP listed at $1870 which is trash. This makes me wonder what price the 4080S will actually be launching at in Australia especially with the usual limited supply at launch (and potentially moving forward due to supposedly supply issues with production capacity shifted towards AI). Now one might say well I'll just wait until the price and supply settles later in the year and see what the mid year sales are like however by that time we may be getting quite close to the launch of the 50 series and you might be back to waiting again. IMHO the Super variants only really makes sense if you're planning to snag one at/near launch.

I will say though the 4070 Ti Super does look like the card to get and may be the one to wait for if that's all the performance you need.

This is all hypothetical of course who knows the card may launch at $1500 and I am the idiot lol.

CUDA cores and memory BUS are what you should be looking at.
I wouldn't touch a non Super variant with a barge poll.
Sure the prices are getting cheaper, but they're not worth it when you're getting boosts for the same TDPs.

    • +14

For sure the 4070/Ti Super looks like solid gains but the 4080 is only gaining ~5% CUDA cores and literally 1-2% increase in boost speed which was why I thought we're probably only expecting to see that 5-7% actual gain.

Again my bigger issue/concern was NV listing the Australian MSRP at $1870.

      • +20

We said it and we'll say it again. At this price we should get more than 16gb of VRAM

        • +12

Absolutely, I've been saying for a while now that limiting VRAM was NV's way of planned obsolescence.

I think 4080S was basically NV's way of admitting they f@cked up with the pricing but even then they still find a way to screw us over in Australia lol…

        • +4

Yeah if AMD can give the 7900XT 20gb it's honestly a joke they can't do the same for the 4080

          • @lookingforadeal7: Because of all those games coming out next 2 years that will need 18gb vram

        • +7

At this price I expect a backrub from Jensen.

        • I'm still on 8gb. And the only games I've had to be careful with vram this year were Hogwarts and forza

      • +3

It will drop… the padding in that pricing is a joke.

  • +25

I'm just waiting until GTA 6 PC release so I can get a 6xxx series card, true HODL

    • +17

Lol might even see the 70 series by then.

      • +1

Pc release will probably be 2026/2027

      • Nah 2026 . 50/60. Obviously the game will still be playable with 30/40 series because it's built for ps5/xbx

HODL'ing for the legendary RTX 6090 Ti Super

      • +5

And only with an RP of $8000 with a 5% performance increase from the 4090!! What a bargain!!!

        • +7

          $8000 USD of course!

so it'll be $12,000 AUD + tax, import fees, shipping costs, AIB custom cooler cut, shop markups, scalper cuts, cryptocurrency volatility insurance, RGB lighting subscription, Jensen leather jacket tax, so we're looking at roughly $69,069 AUD.

Thanks for sharing the chart, I really hope we do see that ~$1650 price point but NV has other ideas: https://www.nvidia.com/en-au/geforce/graphics-cards/40-serie…

        • +2

Yep I mentioned it in my opening post hence why I thought $1649/1599 price point's actually pretty solid considering what may well be very minor performance gain on the 4080.

          • +1

@basketballfreak6: The poll results are surprising. I didn’t think many people would hold out for the 4080 Super vs 4070 Ti Super. The extra CUDA cores and memory bus are pretty enticing. If people can hold out, surely there’d be an eBay discount code that could bring the 4080 Super closer to 1500 as we head nearer to EOFY.

            • @Julius: Yea man. I think if the 4080S launch at $1650 like it supposed to then for sure that's a no brainer but if base model really comes out at $1870 for that predicted ~5% performance increase then it's not worth the premium IMHO. Again agreed that the 4070Ti Super would be the one to wait for.

These days I don't put too much hope getting a deal on eBay with graphics cards with all the price jacking that they do, though you do see the occasional ones that forget to price jack prior to sales lol.

        • Nvidia can set whatever AUD MSRP they want but all they’re achieving is creating an opportunity for Geo-arbitrage.

The converted JPY MSRP of these supers is even lower than the converted USD price - and there are many deals I’ve seen on ozb for Amazon Japan items being sold through Amazon Australia.

If supply if good and demand doesn’t spike to the moon - it should be fairly routine for Australian buyers to pick up a 40 super card for around the converted USD MSRP imo

    • We already have an official AUD RRP.

This is my first time to see a chart in comment..

  • Is this good enough for city skylines 2?

    • +1

      Not at launch.

      • i'm ootl. is this satire? a $1600 gpu can't play city sims these days?

    • +1

There is no good system for CS2 or it may not exist just yet :). But this one might be beneficial for sure paired with a good CPU.

  • +3

Thanks OP, I just claimed back $279 via 28 Degrees price protection for the MSI Ventus 3X OC that I bought back in April last year.
Hopefully prices across all models and brands will continue to come down further.

The RTX 4080 has been working like a dream, very energy efficient, cool and quiet when undervolted.

    • +2

That's awesome man! Also that's crazy long price protection!

      • +2

Indeed, one year of PP is very generous. I'm super lucky to have gotten in before they grandfathered the price protection scheme a few years back.

        • That's dope, so I assume even when the current card expires the PP will carry over to the new card (since it's the same account)?

          • +3

@basketballfreak6: Yep, it carries on until you hit the lifetime claim limit of $20K at which point the scheme ends. There's also a yearly claim limit of $5K.

  • Hmmmm one of these or hold out for a super or hold out for a second hand one? Doesn't look like much more than 3% difference in games between the non super and the super.

    • +6

That was me all of today bud lol.

Spoiler alert I caved and got the Gaming X Slim.

I upgraded to a 3440x1440 UW OLED last year and am finding the 3080 starting to struggle in some of the newer games so was waiting on the Super when it was rumoured to be better and cheaper. Obviously we know now that the 4080S' performance gain is probably going to be negligible so I was waiting on the price cut, then found out NV had the MSRP set at $1870 which sucks.

I am also heading overseas for ~3 weeks early February so if I were to wait until the release of the Super I probably won't even look at picking up the card until March and judging by the AU MSRP I doubt we'll see the cards at $1650/1599, not to mention the Gaming X at least is mid tier and comes OC out of box higher than 4080S stock boost clocks. I like the aesthetics better than a lot of the base models as well.

I figured if I get the card now I'll get to enjoy it for a few weeks before I fly not to mention I picked up a few new games during the sales; if I come back end of February to see that the price was no better/higher than the BPC Tech sale price or there is no stock I'll be pretty filthy and if I wait for sales later in the year I feel it'll be getting too close to 50 series release and I'd probably then end up HODL again.

So that's my sh!tty justification on how weak minded I was after being strong for so long if that helps lol.

      • +2

        Don’t look back bro. Enjoy

I’ll probs do the same and cave !!

        • +3

Thanks bro absolutely; I hate saying this but life really is too short.

  • +5

4070 Ti Super with stacked eBay and gift card discounts is the only card worth getting after launch

256 bit bus and 16GB VRAM will hold performance and resale value

Both 4080's still poor value and only exist to shift sales towards the 4090

    • -2

Fair call. But many eBay prices almost always jacked to account for 22% codes etc

  • +3

Fellow HODLers, resist the temptation and keep hodling!!

    • +2

ill hold until msy hit that price then i might not be able to resist… cant imagine the 4080s being $1660, which would account for the paltry 5% performance increase.

      • +1

        Stay strong brother!

    • +2

Just one more year, we can get a 5070 with might be 16gb wwwww

      • Hodling till 6090, then its an instant buy for me ngl

      • +1

If that's what you want may as well get a 7800xt

    • +1

Must hold…. A…few…more…weeks/month-ish….for $1500 or less… but these two cards the only ones that fit my SFF argh, so tempted!

But also re the Ti S settled prices to see how far off vanilla 80 for price: real world performance. Might be better value end of the day….

    • +2

      Still on my 1080TI mate

      • At my place, one pc has a r9-380, one has an rx480 and one has a 1080Ti.

        I can't hodl much longer.

  • +9

The RRP of the RTX 4070 Ti Super is $1499. It also has 16MB less cache than the 4080.

If I were in the market for this tier of GPU I would definitely consider a discounted RTX 4080.

    • +2

im considering it pretty hard tbh

      • I’m so hard hahaha. Trying to HODL

    • +2

It also has 16MB less cache than the 4080.

I don't think it does? You might be thinking of the 4070 Super being touted as having 36 MB instead of 48 like the OG 4070 Ti, but that was an error in the presentation.

EDIT: I stand corrected, but it's also 75% of the cache for 82.5% of the SMs. Probably not a bottleneck given the VRAM.

    • +4

Oh damn I didn't even check that the 4070 Ti Super MSRP was $1499.

      What a joke.

  • +1

Gaming X SLIM at 62mm wide there's nothing slim about it.

  • +1

I’ve heard that the entry level of 4070 ti super (fk this is a long name to type) would be around 1.3k and premium models around 1.6k. So if u can wait, just wait

    • It took you longer to type your complaint than it did the 4070 Ti Super.
      Oh my fingers hurt now.

  • +5

such a shame how gpus are now used for other applications besides 3d and gaming, making them rack up in pricing. this ai and crypto stuff needs to be stopped

  • you need like a 1000w psu to run these right?

    • +2

      Nup

    • +1

      750W minimum with 850W recommended

      • I run a 3080 that used up to 380watt with 750 with no issues. 850 is unnecessary for these cards which is much more efficient. Maybe for a 4090, I'd still run that with my 750watt if i had one lol

        • Was just stating the official recommended specs, but yeah completely agree that even lower is fine even during peak loads.

    • +4

People run 4090s on lke 650w PSUs

  • This or the 4070 Super TI?

    • +1

Hard to say without real world benchmark comparos and some early indications of Ti S AIB prices..

  • +1

how are the cooling performance of these cards running AAA games at stock?

and why do i feel like the Gaming X Slim is going to suffer with temperature?

    • I have watched this video and as you guessed their cooling is not really as good as other cards.. if you’re keen this is the link of the video I was referring to: https://youtu.be/jGORmB6GoH8

      • hey thanks for the quick reply. Seeing slim I'm guessing they trim the heatsink thickness hence suspecting the poorer cooling performance.

    • +4

I think most if not all cards will be fine; one thing NV did well was efficiency and with the over-engineered coolers I don't think temps really get all that high and the fans don't really spin up that much (from what I've gathered anyway).

Coil whine OTOH seems to be a hit/miss issue with a lot of these cards…especially ASUS seems to be more susceptible this round from what I've read around the interweb.

I personally went with the Gaming X Slim by the way which comes out of box OC boost higher than stock 4080S boost clock.

  • +1

Wondering if is worth getting these at this price as its likely not happening again especially after the Super variant releases.. what do you guys reckon if you were after a 4080 with a reasonable price?

  • +5

i just stumbled across the pc part list i put together from 2018. i paid $800 for my 1080. current state of the world just makes me sad af

    • +3

I remember thinking the price of a 1080 Ti (>$1000) was absurd af. Current state of the world definitely is indeed pretty sad.

    • You will own nothing and you will be happy

  • +2

House prices have gone up, rent has gone up, food has gone up, GPU has gone up… Very sad…

    • +7

And wages have gone up… Wait nevermind that's a lie

      • +2

        Mine hasn't :-(
Been in the same jobs for years…

        • +4

Yeah my mum was on $28 an hour for unskilled labour 10 years ago, seemed to have been the standard "above award rates" hourly rate for the last decade for that type of work.

      • +5

Our income is decreasing every year if pay raise is lower then inflation.

        • +3

Yep, even the tradies are feeling it, you'll hear that $50+ an hour "isn't enough" these days. I've just changed my lifestyle up a bit and decided to not worry about getting ahead since being on lockdown for 350 days during COVID. Stress is a killer there's really no point.

  • +1

the super series will be 1500aud to 1600. The current nvidia website price says 4080 in Australia cost 2150, take their website pricing with s grain of salt.

Too little too late. Still not low enough, id pay this if they did a 4080ti with ad102 and 20gb. For card though $1,300 if it was that price at launch. This far into this gen though..

$1,000 or less lol ill keep waiting the 5000 series. This gen was a massive fail and Amd wasnt much better

    • +5

AMD continuing to sniff glue while NVIDIA is asleep at the wheel is one of the biggest fumbles in tech history.

      • the xtx orginally seemed promising when the price was announced when it was implied it wouldnt be too far off the 4090 but it wasnt close at all lol. Being a direct 4080 competitor instead they should have been much more agressive but instead followed behind nvidia with the ridiculous pricing lol. Amd keep on fumbling

    • +1

Was also hanging out for a 4080ti with AD102 but it seems that's basically what the RTX4090D is. SAD
