This is a very good deal as we are expecting all SSD pricing to skyrocket in the next few weeks.

    https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/ssds/ssds-pricing…

    • +6

don't believe everything you read on tomshardware

        • +10

The media has been predicting sky rocking prices for at least the last 6 months.

AI demand for HBM NAND, as there are only three producers will most likely rise. The big players, SKH,SEC,Micron have all predicted data center spend this year, and the return to break-even for NAND.

But on the flip side for consumers, smaller players who don't have a fab might looking at other NAND sources (for price senstive products), say YMTC who are now shipping 232-layer QLC, same as Micron who (I believe) have not shipped their 232 QLC, only sampled. YMTC are rumoured of have 300+ announced this year. SKH announced 321 3D TLC due 2025.

I wonder what NAND this drive is using ;-)

          • +2

@mrhugo: This drive is YMTC 232l.

            • +2

@Clear: Samsung (and the few other manufacturing brands/fab operators) really only care about volume.

Raw materials are peanuts, conversion cost is everything.

Once the R&D and setup costs are ammortised… the rest is cream. So price can drop.

But that said, they quickly stop production of low value models in favour of high value. Aftermarket may take over after that… maybe because they figure out how or buy/license/etc. production capability from top tier silicon companies.

Somewhere in all the above are more than a few the gorillas in the room; Facts can get you quickly to comparisons showing 4TB NVMes cost less than 64MB SATA drives… and so on.

So whilst there is a lot of FUD around that prices will go up, it used to mostly count what PC manufacturers forward order, (who themselves are gambling on how much they can ultimately sell into their own shrinking markets). Plus contention for production between DRAM products and other RAM chip based silicon chips/product types…

I'm pretty sure its absolute chaos out there in OE and OEM silicon market landscape right now. And only getting worse. Esp. with all the chinese fabs trying to muscle in to whatever markets still exist (which they are very good at), and taking what's left of the retail lunch the others are still trying to arrange on the table

    • +2

I thought ssds were going to drop down to bargain levels towards end of last year or did we skip that phase and back to dumb prices now

      • It did dip to rock bottom in Q4 2023 but was projected to implode sometime in Q1 of this year

      • Wait until the market is flooded with Gen 5 solid state drives this year, Then Gen 4 price should drop even further.

        • Gen 5 ssds are still too power hungry for how 'slow' they are. Also anything faster than gen 3 speeds is still not that useful.

          • @JerraJones: In The competitive game I play the difference for me is with a gen4 I can spawn in first and get the unit and vehicle I want . With gen 3 . Half the time I miss the first spawn wave.

    • +2

By skyrocket they mean 15-20%, so yeah, significant, but I probably wouldn't compare it to skyrocket (if we say, GPU prices during covid is the benchmark for "skyrocketing prices").

      • WD has publicly stated that it will increase the current RRP for SSDs by up to 55%.
Samsung according to Honey has jacked up prices on 990 Pros by in excess of 25% compared to 2023 avgs

        • NAND pricing and RRP does not mean shit - the Buy Now price at Amazon is everything

WD has publicly stated that it will increase the current RRP for SSDs by up to 55%.

Because WD need to dress up the books before they spin off the flash memory unit into a new business

Samsung according to Honey has jacked up prices on 990 Pros by in excess of 25% compared to 2023 avgs

Samsung are not NVIDIA and SSD's are not GPU's - if Samsung want to price themselves out of a competitive market, good luck to them

          Current NAND market share rankings:

          1/ Samsung
          2/ SK Hynix
          3/ Kioxia (Toshiba)
          4/ Western Digital (SanDisk)
          5/ Micron (Crucial)
          6/ Others including YMTC

Crucial T500 2TB with 232L TLC has already been down to 2 For $310

Micron could easily release a 4TB P4 Plus for $300 and demolish these B tier Lexar drives but the reality is that Lexar, Fanxiang and the other YMTC SSD's are a blip on the radar

Just like Great Wall utes do not affect the pricing of a Ford Ranger, YMTC drives do not affect the pricing of top tier SSD's

          • +1

@Look Up: Sorry I just found it funny to think of a ford as a top tier car

    • Will Ram price increase as well?

    • +1

This uses YMTC nand so it may not rise as much as other SSDs.

That being said it is expected that will be price rises across the board.

    • +2

YMTC stock piled a lot of NAND flash so I am not sure I am that impressed with NM790 started the price rise last year. At least other SSD makers still cleared their stock last year (instead of trying to take advantage of the situation).

Given Lexar ANZ rep indicated the price rise months ago, I don't quite see a reason to delay buying NM790 till now, then numb the brain to think this is now a good deal by expecting the price of other SSDs to rise more soon.

Also, is the linux issue fixed for these? Or, it is basically just a workaround that has been baked into newer distributions of linux? Lexar and YMTC doing nothing to patch it via firmware?

    • how many months/years have they been saying that?

    • Just waiting for the authorities to slap them another price fixing fine then prices will go down. The China Nand fabs are also ready to trash the western brands price party but USA is on the lookout for any 'threats' from any China brands and put them on the ban list.

(eBay Plus) $289 Delivered from BPC Tech eBay: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325737102952

    • Thanks - bought it from the link above for $279 including delivery.

    • +1

Was $270 from them during October sales plusa bonus pair of Razor headphones.

    • oh wow good catch, shows $279 for me too!

      • +1

        How are you getting $279? I'm only getting a $20 voucher 😅

        • I have EbayPlus (got in for the $5 for the year deal) and it automatically takes $30 off in checkout

          • +1

@jumbosloth: That would explain it, I already used up my $30 voucher from the $5 deal.

        • But 2, so can use $50 which makes $5 cheaper each

    • +3

how? I only got $10 off with ebay plus

    • Thanks mate I just bought 2 for my new build!

  • +3

Great deal. Just remember no dram. So if it's your one and only drive on a PC it's not perfect.

    Perfect price for PS5 though

    • +1

Yep, buying it as an additional drive for PC games. My main OS drive is SK hynix Platinum P41 1TB, which has DRAM, bought it in Dec 2023 for $114

    • Know of any good deals on 4TB with DRAM? I only have the 1 m.2 slot and need to upgrade from a constantly full 1TB drive.

      • +1

I doubt you’ll find one. The Samsung’s have all been jacked recently! Plus they’re nearly double this price!

    • Sorry. This has no heatsink. Which you will "need" (possibly) for ps5

    • Lack of DRAM doesn't mean it shouldn't be used as a boot drive. Look at the reviews, this drive is fine as a boot drive

  • I think my Z270-A is only compatible with PCIe 3.0, but from a quick search this would still run, just at 3.0 speeds not 4.0 speeds.

    Is anyone able to confirm?

Would be good to start ticking off upgrades ahead of a bigger rebuild later this year.

    • Correct it'll just run at the slower speeds. (source: I have a 1TB of this model in my b450 that only supports 3.0 speeds too)

    • Correct

  • Could get cheaper? Say $250 ?

    • Are you genuinely asking or suggesting?

    • It was 240 a few months ago. A friend got a heatsink one for his ps5. Which this is perfect for

      • +1

Yes, saw that deal, was hoping it would come back

  • would this pair with "Simplecom EC415B NVMe M.2 SSD to PCIe x4 x8 x16 Expansion Card w/ Aluminium Heat"?

    • +1

      Yes

  • +6

Cheaper here for the same product if you don't have mVIP ($289 free shipping to metro areas)

    https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/lnm790x004t-rnnng-lexar-n…

    • That's now 375 dollars, wow

      • Oh wow! I've not bothered plugging it in yet but definitely feeling positive about the purchase, cheers for the reply!

  • Will this work on a PS5 and does it require a separate heat sink?

    • +4

Works on a PS5 even without a heatsink. However, just get a cheap heatsink so you stop thinking about it.

    • +2

Im no expert, but if concerned the Heatsink version is available for $299: BPC Tech

  • has the linux issue been fixed on these?

    • +1

      wait, what?

Just ordered (from the eBay link) and I run a Linux laptop.

I've found this thread, is there more to it than this?

      • +2

Yes, they have been resolved, but you need to run a kernel 6.2+

  • I ordered Crucial t500 from amazon earlier this month at 175.68 but it’s still not shipped yet.

Just wondering how does this compare with the crucial t500c

    • Is that price for 4tb? That particular listing on Amazon has an error on the capacity.

      • +1

From the description it should be 2tb instead

        • after you get that and its indeed 2tb try to talk to amazon chat and complain bout it, apparently some people got some amount of total, refunded, worth a try

  • Kicking myself for wasting my limited slots on 1gb and 2gb nvmes. Didn't realize how valuable these would be.

    • +4

I can offer a sole, just buy more. It's the ozbargain way.

Pop the old ones in enclosures.

  • Sorry for stupid question - up to recently nvme drives were good or bad depending on if they had DRAM, as caching writes could make the drive as slow as a sata ssd BUT am I correct to assume that new drives like this still get great sustained writes without dram? Due to better design or faster nand or?

    • +1

Not that straight forward. Plenty of drives without DRAM were still excellent drives. And almost all people never even saw the slowdowns from huge sustained writes anyway.

And no not all new drives without DRAM are great, it’s literally drive dependent. And some manufacturers put out better firmware early and then when positive reviews come in swap it for the inferior stuff.

      • +1

        *hardware not firmware.

Yep, for example, HMB, which is in some dram-less drives, have improved things alot.

        • Yes hardware sorry not sure what wires my brain connected on that one…

  • +1

Is this single sided? My NUC can only fit a single sided nvme

    • +1

  • Only 100 more than my 2tb in my ps5 from 8 months ago!

    Nice

  • looking to get an external ssd for games, is this worth getting if i get an enclosure for it?

    • +1

i guess that fine, I use a cheap Adata 2tb ssd and 1tb 980 pro in encourage for past 2 years and everything is fine.

  • This is not much of a deal for $285 plus delivery charges. I've seen the Lexar NM790 as low as $250 before at one point.

    • +4

Yes but you have to consider the price increases and what’s to come. All you have to do is read the posts above…not hard.

  • +1

I bought the heat sink version for ps5 for my kid - it works a treat. I just as at the shop and saw a package deal with razor headphones for $315 which was awesome as he needed some headphones. https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/lnm790x004t-rn9ng-rz04-03…

I started looking around at SSDs again a few days ago and didn't realise how expensive they are (I'm saying that at someone who paid the apple tax and got 8TB in my new macbook)

How would something like this go for backing up a FLAC music collection? I'm looking at playing around with Ableton a little too so would like something to store samples etc.

Obviously no substitute for internal storage, and I have a NAS for longer term storage, but i want something for regular time machine backups and sample pack usage etc. Not looking at anything too silly like editing 8k video directly.

In summary (after being very wordy), I can use internal storage and mostly after something for short term backups and to offload + free up space.

I don't even know what kind of enclosure to pair out with. Looked at TB4 and realised how crazy expensive it gets, plus the need for a dock to avoid plugging in a millon things.

Thought maybe this drive and a chapter cheapish 10Gbps enclosure would be okay?

    • This would work fine. I use a spare ssd in a cheap amazon enclosure for a similar purpose, 10 gbps is plenty for occasional backups.

      • -1

        Sweet, thanks!

  • They fly even at high zstd as compression. I now retired my 8tb spinning drives to offsite backup…

  • Heya ha ha those comments still have me wondering. I have a 2tb Samsung 970 with windows and games on it, if I got one of these would i I notice any difference if os was on it as boot drive? Cheers

    • I honestly don’t believe it would be drastically noticeable hence why I got these over a 4TB 990 pro.

  • This is very tempting, my two 2TB HDDs have started to develop bad sectors. One is totally fubar!!

  • I want a Ps5 SSD and will definately want 4TB as storage is key and only have limited slots…

At $299 for 4TB, this is too tempting (Lexar NM790 Heatsink M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4×4 NVMe SSD 4TB NVMe SSD)

Any concerns I should be aware of? Thanks

  • Arrived today, installed with ease, however did show up under storage spaces so had to delete it from there before being able to use!

  • +1

This drive has gone up everywhere since the end of Jan. I finally have some money and it's $100 more expensive everywhere.

  • +1

Guy in the comments saying a huge jump was incoming was completely right! So glad I got 2 👌💪

    • Yeah it's very expensive now
