  • This thing is awesome, for anyone who is into music production, this runs rings around the Apple equivalents which are priced much much higher.

this runs rings around the Apple equivalents which are priced much much higher

Which is their for about everything when comparing an equivalent products against Apple.

Apple isn't about being low cost or value for money

      • And what is Apple about? Your point is moot as it just proves what I am saying.

        • verbleen goods

        • this runs rings around the Apple equivalents

          [citation needed]

no doubt they are priced extremely higher, and this would be more powerful on paper, yes

          • @kind0fmagic: No citation needed, any equivalent Apple hardware from music production

            VS
            MAC Mini

Mini starts @ 2K, similar specs put an additional $900 for 32GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. Which for $2,900 vs $700, the Mini is not 4 times more powerful.

Something like this would be a more reasonably priced comparison (what you configured is indeed a ridiculous ask),
and I already acknowledged that they are 1. much more expensive and 2. less powerful on paper

hint: like the previous commenter indirectly said, leaving the "Apple experience" (particularly with something like music production) out of the equation is disingenuous

              • +1

@kind0fmagic: Your link doesn't even work, I posted like for like, you know apples for Apples.
Same specs which means that the Apple is poor value for money and a waste.
I specified music production as am very familiar with musos getting caught up in the Apple hype.

The MINISFORUM i7 Mini PC comes with 32GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, so you should be able to compare directly to the same specced M2 Pro.

                  Ignores my entire point

I can't have this conversation again.

The link was broken, I'll give you that

                  • @kind0fmagic:

what you configured is indeed a ridiculous ask

No it wasn't, it was a like for like, that's what you don't understand.
Both machines are similarly CPU matched, they have the same format, then everything else needs to be like for like, ie SSD capacity and RAM.
That's why this Intel wins hands down, that's why there needs to be no conversation.

for anyone who is into music production, this runs rings around the Apple equivalents which are priced much much higher.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Apologies, I meant it was a ridiculous ask as in WOW that asking price is ridiculous!!!

                      • @kind0fmagic: OK but I even checked the lower specced non Pro version of the Apple M2.
This is still $2100 when you go to 24 GB RAM and 1TB SSD.
It's also much lower in CPU specs here
If you want to do music production, more cores/threads and RAM always wins, the caveat is that the Apple wins when doing video editing. It has its own proprietary codec ProRes which favors M2 hardware.
It wont matter though, anyone trying to video edit on an IGP will have more to worry about than RAM or SSD size.

The point I am making is, no matter how you look at it, nothing Apple has comes close to this Intel offering for a music production machine at the asking $.

                          We are in agreement!

You, however, said that it would run rings around their Apple equivalents. It does not.

                          • @kind0fmagic: Yes it does, look at the context, you need to pay 4 times as much to get the same perf and specs, somehow you're being obtuse to this fact even when its been presented to you many many times.

$700 vs $2900, which runs rings around it for the $?

                            • @[Deactivated]:

which runs rings around it for the $?

This is a different argument from what you said in your original comment.

Not so much me being obtuse as your poor wording.

                              • @kind0fmagic: If you cannot figure it out, the value per $ vs perf, yes the Intel runs rings around something that costs 4 times as much.
That would be you being obtuse.

I will do like for like, a $2,900 mini PC vs the M2 Pro.

MINISFORUM UM790 Pro Mini PC AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS

                                Only $$2,636.97.

                                Lets compare CPUs. Oh noes

Chalk and chalk right there, or more so, apples vs Apple's.

                                • +1

@[Deactivated]: I am not being obtuse, your original comment simply does not say what you are now saying. We are in agreement that Apple is a relatively poor value proposition.

Now on a purely "performance like for like" basis, there are many valid reasons why one would opt for the Apple ecosystem (especially for music production), benchmark-whoring aside

                                  • @kind0fmagic: No you've been obtuse all along because you've known all along what I have meant.
Intel costs 4 times less therefore runs rings around the Apple equivalent.
Thanks for the agreement, now we can move on.

                                    • @[Deactivated]:

                                      And what is Apple about?

Reflect on this one ;) it's not ONLY overcharging out the ass

Truly thanks for the back and forth tho, I know there's no place I'd rather be on Saturday night than in OzBargain comments

            • @[Deactivated]: What exactly makes this good for music production compared to literally any other desktop / laptop?

Why would you use some generic brand commercially?

              • @NuclearWessels: Every brand is generic unless you're using inhouse PCs which is the worst possible purchase due to inflated $.
Laptops are horrible due to size of screen, none will touch this mini @ this price for something with same specs.
                a) you need a good cpu
                b) you need a good amount of RAM
                c) you need a sizeable SSD

This mini has it all and no laptop will have the same specs @ $700.

                • @[Deactivated]: Every brand isn't generic. If you're using this for personal use - sure go right ahead.

If you're doing anything commercial, etc - spend the extra and get an Intel NUC and fit it with some proper RAM and a proper HDD that won't fail in 12 months time.

                  • @NuclearWessels: Sorry but it is generic, because you're using off the shelf parts to assemble.
                    Proper RAM?
Proper HDD? This comes with an SSD, how do you know the quality of these components other than speculation?
Anything commercial? Why would anyone spend $700 on an entry level product?

You clearly missed the whole point of my OP.

can you add external gpus on these?

    • Yeah would like to know as well

    • I can't see that it supports thunderbolt so the answer is no. No eGPU support.

    • They do have a model Minisforum B550 Pro with ability to transfer to SFF with separate GPU but not this one

FYI, Price is in USD and for me shipping was $155 USD

  • +1

Wow this is great specs for a mini PC

  • Any idea which OS comes with these? Hoping for Win Pro as needed for work

  • +1

Typically unless specifically stated they come with No OS but then there are some questionable machines which come with Windows but the licenses may not be legit (I know that is a rash generalisation) but in the past I’ve seen machines ship with questionable copies of OS, especially Windows, some even have KMS activation and others have OEM Windows where some company has recycled old machines and people have taken the licenses from those.

For the record I’m not saying this one has but a lot of people, including myself, have seen that before - typically genuine OEM Windows which a new box adds somewhere from $110-$170 to the price depending on whether it’s Home or Pro.

If it’s not stated then quite possibly no OS at all.

    • +1

Just do a fresh install yourself either way

      • Probably a good idea in case it comes with some nasties on their Windows, again not saying they actually fo that, but there are places around where you can buy semi-legit keys which often taken from recycled machines and you can often buy those for anything from $3 to $30 depending on which site you go to.

        • You can also run an easy to find activation script for $0 and it about as legit as those $3 keys.

        • where to get $3 one?

  • FYI I couldn’t find anything on the Amazon description that indicates there is an OS on the machine. Also these USFF PCs use XXGB of DDR4 DRAM (typically in a SODIMM format) DDR5 might have been nice though nothing is explicitly mentioned on Amazon’s site, it also does not say what version of Wifi or Bluetooth it uses, so maybe do a bit of further research before you splash your cash. That being said it’s still a decent buy for the money. I’d expect BT 5.2 or 5.3 and probably some Wifi 6/6E but expectations and reality can be a some way apart.

    • The UN1270 isn't even showing on Minisforums website yet, but the Amazon splurge in the link reads "in view of the popularity of UN1265 among customers, our R&D team has developed a sister version of UN1270" (bit Chinglish there)

The UN1265 is Wi-Fi6E and BT 5.2, and it's a pretty safe bet they wouldn't be stepping backward from that for the UN1270.
