Powerball Is 200m How Much You Spending on Tickets? [Updated]

We all know the lottery is essentially a tax on people who are bad at math (myself included) but almost 2/3rds of adult Australians had a ticket to the 100m last week (including myself)

So be honest how much you dropping on Thursday nights 150m

i only tend to play when the jackpot is over 50-60m which probably happens maybe 5-10 times a year between Oz Lotto and Powerball when i play i tend to drop around and i know im getting ripped off every time usually most of the $ i spend 'are people saying 'do you want to join our syndicate?'

so with SO many of the adult population buying a or multiple entries be honest what you dropping for a 'very very small chance' at extreme riches?

ill share a few stories from clients over the years on crazy lotto bets

  • one guy dropped 6k on tickets won $42 his wife 'almost' left him when she found out
  • i knew a girl whos relative had won 1st division 3 times (yes he is take lucky)
  • new a person who played for the 1st time ever at age 21 and won millions (disappeared oversea after that an is living his best life)
  • i know a new a guy who worked in a factory where guys working in pick pack won 1st division in the syndicate, all of them resigned bar one bloke who it turned out was on holiday and didnt put his $10 for the week in and missed out on the millions (got fair depressed for a while after that poor bloke)
  • i also know a bloke (not lotto) who won the Melbourne Home lottery but he was already rich so it wasnt all that interesting

25/01/2024 - updated

SO somewhat unbelievably no one took out the 1st div it is now 200m next Thursday [01/02/2024]…… i added change in votes in case you change how much your spending next week.

I think this is the largest jackpot Australia has ever seen domestically, im going to honest i have no idea what i'd do with 200m but i'll be playing if I win ill probably set a special 'charity' poll to donate some of that cash too, however it is beyond my ability to comprehend what i'd or anyone else would do with an instant 200m. Maybe ill consider upgrading my 9 year old Honda Civic i probably wouldnt care about expensive servicing and insurance cost on a European car, perhaps an EV [as im told they are better for the planet] .

Good luck

It's a 50/50 chance of winning, you either win or you don't. I'm going to buy 2 tickets and automatically win.

    • hahah what a way to think about it

    • wait…. I think you've cracked it!

    • +1

Must have studied mathematics at a private school! /S

    • Exactly.

If the universe wants you to win,
you can win with just 1 line anyway.

  • +2

because of odds and prize sharing, i only play Powerball at >= 100M and sat lotto if >= 20M

for sat lotto i play 1 game of system 7
for pball i play 1 game of system 8 (i think)

this way, lesser wins get multiplied.

  • +4

With power of OzBargain ,how about we all join same syndicate of ozlotteries and purchase a large system 12 power hit and become news headlines as powerball winners ?

    • -1

Panasonic would make a boat load from all of us buying Enloops lmao

    • I would definitely be in.

It's like a Netflix group plan but the reward is not movies I'll never see it's money.

  • +1

When you choose random numbers when buying online is it really random, do you get numbers that no one else would have got if you didn't buy them? Not that it matters really, you may as well play 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, your odds of winning are the same.

    • +3

Odds of winning are the same with any set of numbers, odds of sharing (a win) are variable though

      • +3

If I cbf picking numbers I usually start the runs from higher numbers to avoid the sharing. Would love the story of being the person who solo won on consecutive numbers.

    • +1

better to find stats on the least played numbers and play those.

or take the easy way and just stay away from 1-31 (birthdays)

    • +3

Incorrect. You increase your chances by choosing lightest balls. Every serious gambler knows 1 is the lightest ball (less paint) so it has the least path of resistance and squeezes through more often than any other number.

All will be revealed in my next book.

      • so 6 vs 9? we need to know if it has the line below to show which number it is?

    • 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 is the most common ticket purchased so you would probably be sharing with a lot of other people if you did win

  • +1

$5/$6 - the cheapest ticket. Gotta be in it to win it. But I don't see the point of spending more money as the odds are still low asf.

  • Usually I play minimum (something like $4) but when jackpot is higher I am more generous - last week paid $16 something (12 games). Same luck :)

  • +3

I usually play when it hits 100 million and above (which basically means under 5 times a year which I think is reasonable). Makes it easy to decide when to buy, and your expected value is actually not bad when it gets that high.

And when I play I buy the ~$10 ticket so I'm not throwing away too much. About $20-$50 a year from memory. Nice to think about what I'd do with the winnings but as always, never lucky.

  • I might if I knew how to play - can you buy tickets online?

    • yes

    • +4

I'll sell you mine at a discount, on Friday.

  • I played for a similar reason last year for the first time in years. I was waiting for someone in hospital, saw a news item about it and that it was about to close, so bought an entry online on my phone, about $50?

Later realised I had done it through ozlotteries.com instead of the official lottery website, thought I had thrown my money away.

But I won a small amount though that didn't quite cover the outlay.

    • I buy through ozlotteries.com.au
And now after reading your comment and clicking through I find TheLott.com is the official site?
Does it even matter? Genuine question

      • I just checked and it's ozlotteries.com (ozlotteries.com.au redirects there).

It looks like you pay more per game going via them:

        https://support.ozlotteries.com/hc/en-us/articles/6886086826…

Do I pay more when purchasing via Oz Lotteries?
Yes, Oz Lotteries lottery tickets are priced higher than those purchased from The Lottery Corporation. The additional fees in your purchase assist us in covering our expenses while enabling us to improve the overall online experience for our customers. The premium fees are outlined in the Oz Lotteries Terms & Conditions.

      • Thelott is the official publically listed ASX lottery company. I would only buy from there.

Ozlotteries is some random online company that reselling lottery tickets.

  • +4

I only play Saturday Lotto as the odds are much better

    • +1

I only play Mon and Wed lotto as the odds are the same as Sat, but the per game price is cheaper!

  • +2

150 million is a lot for one person. It wont happen but it would be nice if there was 50 winners thats 3 million each. Change the life of 50 people instead of 1.

    • If the numbers are predominately in the 1-12 range I am sure more than 50 winners is a possibility. odds go down the higher the numbers drawn.

    • I would probably change over 100 lives. I know many people with mortgages, I'd pay them all off. I would likely give away almost all of it.

      • Bro $250,000 is all I need right now to get back on my feet. Any extra is a bonus.
I'm working two jobs and making below wage. However I'll still be fine without it, should take less than 5 years to get back on my feet…. But it'll be nice.

  • I bought a cheap ticket to be in it because my monkey brain wouldn’t let me pass on the very small chance.

I have a regular automatic $2.95 ticket in the OzLotto every week enough for two games. It enough that I don’t notice it come out of my account, but always nice when I get an email saying I’ve one the odd $20 or $50 division. It’s like the Monopoly chance card

    • +1

I do the same, 2 x minimum tickets on Tuesday and Saturday for a grad total of $4.90. If I ever get a call to say I've won "only" $1M one day, that isn't going to suck.

That said, I do tend to buy the $10.80 8 game card for the big ones… honestly, I think the cost of entry is covers the dreams we get to make for those few days before reality comes crashing back down.

My plans are boring and simple, long holiday visiting all the places my wife and I have talked about over the years.
Buy some land and build our dream house, buy a house and car for each of the kids.
Invest the bulk of the money and live off the proceeds.
Volunteer in some social enterprise somewhere for something to do while donating a large chunk of that income since it's not really needed to maintain my old and boring lifestyle.

      • +2

Id like to just go around handing out prepaid mastercards to randoms all the time. drop them as tips at a restaurant. drop them in homeless peoples laps. drop them in a street performers hat. post some to a few houses that look like dogshit on the outside that could do with a some good luck… I would literally devote my life to finding fun new ways to spend the money. And 150 million just using interest alone could allow me to really have some fun in a sustainable way over many decades..

I don't understand the mentality of people buying tickets/more tickets when the jackpot gets higher.

      • +1

I lurk, but signed up just to say this.. this is really the only comment in the thread to take note of. You can buy a ticket when it jackpots like this as your bet has a positive expectation despite the long odds. Of course, you'd have to be the only winner, it's a -EV play if someone else wins too. I already won once, so nothing.

  • Powerball has to be atleast 10 times harder to win than the regular tatts lotto.

    • It's fair. Saturday's Tattslotto jackpot is $5m. This next Powerball jackpot is 30 times that.

  • Lotto takes 50% commission! You could make your own lotto ticket for only a few % commision by putting $20 on one number on roulette and letting it ride 3 times. Think thats a million ish

That would be an easy court win if they did. Lotto winnings are tax free income.

        • I was told the advertised jackpot is just the post tax amount.

          • +2

@7hours 44min ago: Someone told you fibs. That may be the case in other countries but not here. Obviously any interest earned on your winnings will be taxable.

  • I usually just go for an 18 game for $25ish for bigger draws but this week I bought a syndicate ticket for the same price as my usual but I’ve got 150 powerhit games sharing with 150 others.

It’s a win it or bin it scenario because anything less than division 2 will probably return cents

  • +3

Quite often with Lotto there are many more winners in the bigger draws than in the regular ones, because a lot more tickets are sold. So you'd actually win more if your numbers came up in a regular draw.

The exception is Powerball as the odds are so ridiculous that even when the jackpot gets massive there may be only one winner. Whose life and family relationships then get destroyed by it of course 😃

    • -1

The exception is Powerball as the odds are so ridiculous that even when the jackpot gets massive there may be only one winner. Whose life and family relationships then get destroyed by it of course 😃

this is probably one of the biggest Myths about lotto 'people who win end up worse' - this is not actually true - there are people who win that do lose all there money but most of them tend to win around <1m and spend like they won 50m.

Although i agree it is a bit of a waste of money you never hear about the VAST majority of winners who are living it up and invested wisely because 'the media' dont want to write stories about rich boring people and people who get instate rich tend to keep avoid being public about winning.

while the few who lose it all are more then happy to discuss their poor choices.

      • win around <1m and spend like they won 50m.

        Legit. $1m?
        Don't quit your job.
Do not buy a fancy house. Buy an average one on a big block, nice area - YDY.

Honestly, don't even tell anyone. Buy a house + and quietly move in once you've made your financial decisions. Don't tell people how much you won.

Decide what small amount people are getting, if any, and put that aside. $150k aside for fun/savings to make life a little easier. Maybe $100k in trust locked for 10 years. So next time you want a new car, it'll be there. Then the rest in Super/Retirement.

Scale down for whatever you spend on the house.

        • +1

For most ppl 1m would mean they are home loan free - you cant 'quit your day job' but you dont need to stress about $$$

          • @Trying2SaveABuck: Yeah. Granted, You might need to still be putting $100 a week aside for the next time something breaks in the house - the landlord used to pay for that. Land Rates.

But an extra $200+ a week makes so much difference.
Not to mention no one can kick you out.

        • Don't tell people how much you won.

The people who hand you the winning amount to you,
know who you are anyway, and they can leak that information
and put some bikies onto you, … because you're rich now.

          PS:
          OzB poll was missing 'Bikies'

        • +1

          Honestly, don't even tell anyone

I think this is the key for a smaller win, say $3m or less.

But if I win massive, I'm sharing the wealth.

          • @TEER3X: Yeah, oh course.

But i think you should be well into having plans and systems in place for the money: Houses, money aside for later, investments, if possible before everybody starts telling you they've always had this business idea, or their husbands Uncle is in finance/realestate and can handle your money….

And you probably should not tell anybody what you won exactly.
Tell them, then maybe go MIA kinda for a month or two, while they can settle down with their money you've given them, without thinking they can get in you ear at any time to get more, or find out how much so they can find out how much you should have left.

    https://lottosimulation.com/au/powerball

Very interesting site that runs through a simulation of the odds of winning the powerball.

    • Guaranteed to lose. haha

Doing a powerhit ticket with $1000 in account. Lasted 60 weeks, 24 wins @ a dismal $20 average and 36 losses.

The lottery is only for people who are not good at math 🤣

    • +1

I think it's more of an emotional purchase than a logical one.
A lot of people know the odds of winning are unimaginably small but to consider that your entire life can be changed so significantly from a lotto ticket they buy one anyway.

    • sounds like loser talk to me

check your maths lol - its literally +EV now.

And yet those that are good at math aren't rich either, so who's laughing now.

  • +4

I find it hard to believe 2/3 of adults had a ticket where most people don't even buy

maybe they were dividing the number of games by the adult population?

    • -1

im unsure how they get there statistics but you're probably right

      • just think of it as a donations if ya don't win as golden casket, lott, tatts "donate" to charities

    • One game cost about $1.25
Jackpot went up $50m this week so pre-tax they took in about $75m.
At $1.25 per game, they had 60m games sold.
Average spend is $20 according to this poll so there were about 4m tickets sold.
Multiply that by 3 is 12m which is not the number of adults in Australia so my math is way off.

  • +1

the absolute bare minimum amount of tickets - I think its 4 for $6 or something?

I just like to imagine all the thins I could buy if I won. I know the chances of me dying today are higher than winning powerball

  • +1

never bet/gamble. But for the fun, I do always write down what numbers I would have chosen. So far tp date, I would not have won ahah.

    • +1

    • +1

For your own sanity, I suggest you never do this again.

You can keep your miniscule chance of winning a ridiculous amount of money. I'd rather spend my money on an excellent chance of eating a tasty meal

    • Floor pie?

Leave my pie alone, I was about to eat that

    • You can buy many tasty meals with your lottery winnings :)

      • +3

I'm not buying a ticket, but because I'm generous I'll let you buy me food when you win

    • excellent chance

So there is a chance it won't be excellent? Not sure I like those odds…

  • +2

I just bought the cheapest ticket I could get, which was $8.05.

Definitely a tax on stupid people (like me) but you can't win it if you're not in it.

    • +1

For me it's a contribution towards someone else's dream. Nothing wrong with helping your fellow Aussie strike it rich. Ive wasted and continue to waste more money on worse stuff.

  • +2

I wasn't going to until seeing this post.. I guess FOMO kicked in.
Decided to play a bit differently this time. Used Excel to select only the most commonly used numbers and powerball from the last 6 months (for the first 25 games) and then just random numbers for the last 25 games.

I'll report back if I'm a multimillionaire on Friday (unlikely that I will be)

    • +2

Probability of a normal distribution would argue you'd choose the least picked numbers in the last 6 months if you really wanted to try and game it :-P

    • +1

I'll report back if I'm a multimillionaire on Friday (unlikely that I will be)

You won't need to report back.

We'll notice your lack of visits to a certain website about … bargains.

    • Got a few games with 2 and 3 numbers but none of those contained the crucial Powerball. Damn.

  • +2

    Fun Fact -

You're 13 x more likely to win the same amount of money playing roulette vs playing Powerball.

Don't let the emotional part of your brain win.

You're better off going to the casino and putting $50 on black/red and having it come up 9 x in a row and playing all your winnings than winning the equivalent in Powerball.

    • -2

even if you won 10x in a row doubling your money from 50 you wouldnt be close to winning powerball let alone this thursdays powerball

      • "equivalent winnings" and, yes the same math rings true for all division wins.

        • -2

          50x2 = 100

          100x2 = 200

          200x 2 = 400

          400x2 = 800

          800x2 = 1600

          1600x2 = 3200

          3200x2 = 6400

          6400x2 = 12800

          12800x2 = 26400

In what world is 26k comparible to 150million? (It isn't even comparable to 4m the lowest Powerball jackpots) if you double it another 10x in a row it's still not close as you land around 27m in which is still 5 time less then Thursday Jackpot, ill note even if you dont win 1st division, 2nd division will prob pay 200-300k which is miles better than you 9 times in a row casino comment

Which I would hazard to guess would be far worse odds then powerball

I'm not a math Wiz but your orginal comment is just wrong. I'm not sure where you heard it or who made that up but dead set miles off

          • +2

@Trying2SaveABuck: In a game of roulette, where you start with $50 and double your bet on black/red each win, the amount of money you have after a certain number of consecutive wins can be calculated using the formula:

            Final Amount

            Initial Amount
            ×
            2
            n
            Final Amount=Initial Amount×2
            n

            Where:

Final Amount is the amount of money after
            n
            n consecutive wins,
Initial Amount is the starting amount, which is $50 in this case,
            n
n is the number of consecutive wins.
You want to find the number of wins (
            n
            n) needed to reach $150 million. So, you set up the equation:

            150
            ,
            000
            ,

            000

            50
            ×
            2
            n
            150,000,000=50×2
            n

            Now, solve for
            n
            n:

            2

            n

            150
            ,
            000
            ,
            000

            50

            3
            ,
            000
            ,
            000
            2
            n
            =
            50
            150,000,000

            =3,000,000

Take the logarithm base 2 of both sides to solve for
            n
            n:

            n

            log

            2
            (
            3
            ,
            000
            ,
            000
            )
            n=log
            2

            (3,000,000)

Using a calculator, you can find that
            n
n is approximately 21.87. Since you can't have a fraction of a win, you would need 22 consecutive wins to reach or exceed $150 million starting with $50 and doubling your bet on black/red in each round.

Assuming a green 0 and 00 on the wheel, your odds of winning 22 times in a row on black or red is about 0.000000014%, or about 1 in 7.16 billion. Hasher22 pointed out that the odds of winning division 1 is 1 in 147 million, so this lotto ticket has 48.72 times better odds of giving you 150 million dollars than winning 22 times in a row on the roulette.

          • @Trying2SaveABuck: My original comment is correct. You simply don't understand what the word "equivalent" means.

"I'm not a math Wiz but your orginal comment is just wrong. I'm not sure where you heard it or who made that up but dead set miles off" AKA - I have no idea what I'm talking about but I'll just say you're wrong.

You buy 3 x Powerhit tickets which is equivalent to 60 entries at a cost of $80.
            You're chance of winning $15K is 60/686,176 OR 1 in 11,436.

You're chance of winning betting on Red/Black (with double 0s) at the casino is 47.37%.
Most Casinos aren't going to let you bet high amounts on gaming floor tables and will require VIP room access so let's use $5K as the max bet which is generally used across most Casinos.
To win $15K take the same amount spent on the lotto tickets ($80), you would need to double it 6 times, giving $5,120. Then take a $5K max bet and win 2 more times with that. So in total you need to win 8 x. Odds of this happening are 0.4737^8 = 1 in 395

            11,436 / 395 = 29.

You are 29 times more likely to win equivalent money off an initial $80 bet, playing roulette at a casino vs playing powerball.

I had rushed the initial 13x on Div 2 calculations assuming no max bet limit on a roulette table. The math is sound but no casino in the world is going to let random joe walk in and be betting that much.

TLDR - Lotto has terrible, terrible odds.

@Powershopz: I agree lotto has terrible odds but you are terrible at math

Odds of winning powerball for a single game is 1:134m

But with 50 dollars you would get 36 games thus the odds are
              35:134m or 1:3.72m

Once again winning a comparible amount in Roulette is much worst odds

    • Speaking of Roulette, I remember a poster on here a few years ago advertising the virtues of "their system" at continually making money from Roulette and wondering if people would buy into "their system"

    Simple hack, you can't lose*

The smallest prize is about $12.00. The trick is to never spend more than $12 on tickets. This way, even if you only win the smallest prize, you're always winning.

    It's that simple.

This is the kind of math based strategy I'm all for. People don't understand there is a smart way to play the lottery. Hence math professors winning multiple times…

If that makes you feel better about losing then sure and for many such mind tricks helps them justify it. The reality is you are simply choosing to win less often in exchange for being able to break even when you do win on that ticket. The reality is you are no better off. The only trick to guaranteed winning is not playing and if you are playing then being honest with yourself and realising you are most likely losing your entry ticket money.
