mini PCs on special again (after doing the old 'increase the price, then offer a discount' move - but the lowest price previously was $679 - now it's $530)

after some people complained that the Intel N100 chipset based mini PCs for $230 'werent powerful enough' (even though I use one daily for my email/web/o365 and MS Teams workhorse) maybe this Intel I7-12560H CPU (10 cores, 16 threads) with 32GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB SSD will be enough for them. Geekbench score is single core 1715/ multi 8392, DOTA 2 supposedly runs at 90+ fps.

Listed price is $979 (other I7-12560H based mini PCs on Amazon are around the $700-800 mark) but click the 'apply coupon' button and you'll get it for $530.

this is a similar Intel i7-1650H based mini PC tested for gaming at 1080p - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlD9V0wWSMw

and another similar review video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD1y70MQ2Do

the Kamrui AD08 also seems to be known as the NiPoGi overseas - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1-TWcAQfds

supports up to 64GB DDR4 RAM, has a PCI Gen3 NVME and SATA SSD slots.

If you're after a cheaper system then the N100 based mini PCs are $230 again after clicking the 'apply coupon' discount button.

not affiliated, I just like lower energy consuming devices that are also cheap (and stay away from raspberry pi 5 for emulation boxes guys.. they cost nearly the same as an intel n100 mini pc once you add in power supply, case, SSD and you're limited to 8GB maximum. Get a proper x86_64 based pc and run emulators for 3DS, PS2, PS3, Wii U, Switch, Gamecube etc.) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mwgH9xY6WE

Nahh. That stuff is liquid filth.

Got it to fit in the budget instead of Vegemite. Never again.

  • +5

    Interesting design

    • that and the price caught my eye, but I already have 2 Intel N100 based mini PCs so don't think I can justify getting a third. Apparently the side panels are magnetically held in place, it's a pity the RGB cannot be controlled 'to make it go faster' (sarcasm)

I thought the power button was a detachable torch from the thumbnail haha

  • +3

That's a good price especially with the RAM and SSD included. For example the Ryzen 7735HS barebones version on AliExpress would set you back US$398.27 (~A$605ish). The 5700U/5800U variants not much cheaper either.

    • You don't know what type of RAM and SSD is included, though.

Getting barebones PC and choosing own RAM and SSD is better,
but it won't be as cheap as how these companies do it (eg. Beelink, Minisforum, Kamrui, etc.)

      • +1

While true the i7 blows all 3 of those CPUs out of the water, except for the 5800U graphics. Let's hope it's dual and not single 32GB RAM.

Doesn't seem to be a slouch
        CYX-SSD-C1000 is the model number

        RAM is 2x16GB Lexar 1Rx8 PC4-3200 RAM

    • 5825u (better) for $360 delivered - barebone

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005520742106.html

      • It's not the same one though. I can link dozens of better different ones. This Kamrui has a few distinctive features like being able to set the power level of the CPU with a turn of a knob.

        • i wouldn't bank on configurable firmware on these cheap mini pcs

the biggest motherboard manufacturers often launch with crippled and broken firmware and constantly patch fixes until EOF

best you can hope for is that it performs as expected - you are going to end up disappointed, especially when you break the hardware after running an pre-configured aggressive profile

        • btw the ram is too slow on the 780m model, needs to be 5600mhz otherwise you are leaving 10 - 20% of performance on the table

you can pickup a 7840u s500+ with 6400mhz for $600 from morefine offical website

my bad - you were quoting a 680m cpu, not the zen 4 - another bad deal imho

  • +2

This is a lot of PC for the price in a compact design.

  • +4

Great specs for the price it seems. Would be a powerhouse of an emulator box.

    • +1

I haven't been able to find any emulation benchmarks for the I7-1260H CPU as yet, but here is the lower model the i5-12450H and this is how well that slower CPU handles emulation under batocera o/s - https://youtu.be/4fm6TXzWblc?t=453

    • Cemu (Wii U emulator) still not recommends Intel chips.

One not so related question: Do you know a good Wii U emulator to run on Macbook Pro ARM?
      Thanks

  • +5

The cooling is fantastico, meraviglioso, stupendo I think, but I can't speak Italian so I'm not sure.

    • +2

      yeh nah that was good….bellissimo!

  • Does it has a discrete graphics card?

    • +2

My good sir, Are you joshing? Pls say u are!

    • +6

no, it uses the Intel build in APU - same as most mini PCs, they don't have the space for a discrete graphics card (most of the mini PCs are - mini sized! Mine is 12cm x 12cm x 5cm tall). If you want a small PC which can also fit a discrete GPU then you're looking at possibly a mini-ITX sized case / motherboard and that will cost a lot more than this mini PC without a slot for GPU (though I cannot find if the USB-C supports connecting an eGPU in it's own case or not - it does support 4K video output for a third display though).

If you want a mini PC with space for a GPU then you may need to wait for something like the Deskmeet X600 - which you need to add in your own cpu, ram and storage - the previous model the deskmeet x300 was around $400 barebones - https://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/DeskMeet%20B660%20Series…

      • Minisforum HX99G has discrete graphics

    • +1

if you want one with discrete graphics card then you're better off waiting for ASUS ROG NUC but price is unknown but I'm just guessing it'll be over $2k

    • -2

No, and advertising it as a "gaming pc" without one is arguably fraudulent. At the least it's taking the piss to an extreme degree.

      • +2

It lists games with resolution and fps - no it's not going to run AAA titles at ultra resolution and ray tracing enabled but very few gamers actually have rigs that high end to do so. There are more casual games than hardcore gamer, must yout gatekeep gaming because it doesn't suit your definition of what a gaming rig should be? Hard core gamers would be well aware what they're getting for a $500 system vs a $3000+ system with RTX etc. SMH.

  • +4

Want to buy this but no idea what I'd actually do with it…

  • Would recommend people look at Intel 13th gen Mini-PC or AMD Ryzen 7000-8000 series instead, for USB 4.0 to then be able to use a dGPU over Thunderbolt.

    • +4

This has USB 4 also. IMO if people are wanting to game and the solution is buy a dGPU case AND a GPU to go in it, they really should have bought a proper desktop in the first place.

      • +1

I can't find any mention of USB 4 support. Where does it say it? Because this image only mentions USB 3.2

        • +1

ahh you're right, I mistook the AM08 (AMD CPU) for the AD08 (Intel CPU) and the AM08 has the USB 4 port (and I cannot edit the original post as it has been replied to).

    • I mean not sure a dGPU is much value when CPU and RAM will probably bottleneck you first.

Unless you just really want to run 3dmark lol

      • +1

I mean at least you have the option with USB 4.0. Sure buy a proper PC for gaming, but USB 4.0 is just better than USB 3.2 objectively.

    • Where have you seen a cheapish eGPU enclosure? They are fscking expensive :(

      • +1

An actual enclosure? Yeah, they're expensive. I have seen just the PCB as a dock on AliExpress for like $100 and a separate case for like $50. Or you can buy one of these for about $185. Not cheap but I suppose thats true of any eGPU solution because they're niche.

      • +1

Occasionally Facebook market place has them. Often with the GPU inside still.

  • +3

This design always reminds me of the brown paper bags at the tuck shop

    • +3

      It's a MIGHTY brown bag.

  • i have a 49" ultrawidescreen. How can i find out what refresh rate at what resolution this can drive?

    • it's in the specs - "2 HDMI 2.0 ports and 1 Type-C port (4K@60GHz), you can connect 3 displays at the same time, perfect for multitasking, saving time and increasing productivity." you will not be able to game at 4K resolution and fast refreshes - this is not a gaming PC. It should handle media playback more than easy enough though and would be able to game or emulate at 1080p resolution pretty well though.

Theoretically HDMI 2.0 ports support 4K video at 60 Hz, 1440p at 144hz and 1080p at 240hz, but I don't have one so cannot confirm.

I thought this was a breathalyser.

it is! blow into the front of it, then turn the knob at the top and it'll change colours - https://youtu.be/yjgrnKEiszM?t=496

old Rodney Rude joke - so I blew into it and it changed colour. Went through all the colours of the rainbow then melted.

  • A laptop would be a better option?
What use case would this be better?

    • +3

For when you don't want to be squinting at a 14-15" laptop monitor? my mini pc (not this one) is mounted behind the 27" monitor, with webcam, mouse and keyboard connected so I have a 'proper' sit down working space.

Isn't having options and choice a wonderful thing? :)

      • +3

Yeah, but you can also connect the laptop to external monitor.

        • +1

true.. but the laptop will take up more space (usually). I used to have a dual monitor setup at work with a lenovo M720q mini PC installed behind one of the monitors.. worked fine for a year like that.. again just had a keyboard, mouse, wireless headset (for the phone) and the monitors on my desk. Work then decreed everyone should have a laptop.. so went to monitors, keyboard, mouse, dock, laptop stand and laptop being on my desk. I lost space, not gained it. Laptop didn't leave the stand for 2 years after that. And the laptop was slower than the mini PC I had previously (and over heated).

As I said, it's up to personal choice.. there will be options where a laptop is subjectively better, there will be options where a mini pc is subjectively better.

          • @gizmomelb: Thanks. I guess you can use a wireless keyboard and mouse and mount this on the back of the screen, it would have a clean look.
With the laptop, you can pay more and get one with dedicated GPU and it perform better for gaming.

Initially I was thinking you can place this in living room, mount a external drive and use it for Plex.

            • @congo: oh this would work with plex for sure - but honestly the N100 Intel based mini PCs will also work fine with Plex (and transcoding) and they are less than half the cost. I've been using my N100 for KODI media centre on the loungeroom tv for a while and it works really well - the one failing point for me is it doesn't support HDMI-CEC so I need to use another remote control to control KODI interface, rather than the one remote control which controls my TV, surround sound etc. through HDMI-CEC. First world problem I know.

        • To be fair a decent dock-monitor or dock are a few hundred $$$.

But yeah it's pretty close either way.

    • +1

Laptop performance is limited by ventilation.

      • -1

Modern laptops have pretty good cooling.

    • +1

Good luck finding a laptop of equivalent performance for $530

      • Maybe for $300-$400 more.
But laptop would have more uses and you are paying extra for the screen.

        • In Cinebench R23 the 12650H has around 70% faster multithread and 50% faster single thread than the 5500U per Notebookcheck median results, not to mention double the memory. They don't have equivalent performance.

  • -4

You just have to be very careful with spyware with this brand. You will Def's have to install a clean OS, but also there are rumours of spyware embedded in the board.

    • which is why I always recommend to NEVER use any pre-installed O/S - which reminds me, I must try tiny 11 on my Intel N100 - it should absolutely fly with that installed.

      • +3

Yup, I bought the N95 during the last sale and even Chrome was full of their search engine.

Lol not sure why people negged my comment.

        • Lol not sure why people negged my comment.

You needed to provide some links. Otherwise you'd be perceived as one of those tossers that say everything from China is malware.

      • +2

damnit I googled tiny 11 and looks like I'm going to be in this rabbit hole for a while… thanks for bringing that up though :)

        • There are a few stripped down windows which enhance these mini computers.

        • thanks to abs898 for mentioning Tiny 11 previously.

    • use linux

zorin is nice, it's very windows like but with the polish of mac os

thanks to steam gaming has come a long way on linux, not that you'd use this as your primary gaming rig

Cant find the apply coupon button - is it just me or am i late to the party?

    • same here.

      • +1

edit. coupon now appear but may have been reduced to 400. Item is now 580 afer coupon

  • This may a bit too noisy of you plan to put it on your desk. Two fans and 35-48 db probably means it will be pretty noisy. If you plan to stick it a server cabinet it will be fine though.

    • is noisy in gaming mode (34DB+), but as low as 20DB when in quiet mode. Since the sides come off easily (held on by magnets) you could always take them off to allow better circulation I'm guessing. My N100 is usually totally silent (fan ramps up a bit for a minute or so when it finshes downloading something and then auto-unzips the file and moves them to the NAS for me).

  • Could someone till me if this machine can display triple screen with all at 4k 60hz?

  • Is there a coupon? It shows up as $979.99 for me.

  • 5800U / 16GB / 512GB is interesting for $489, not sure why an Ultrabook chipset is in a case like this versus an H model.

    • because they high clocks at low power

if you want a quiet mini pc then you should be going for the U series

  • Don't see any apply coupon buttons

  • no more coupon,

  • yes looks like coupon for this has expired, but coupons for other models still active (just dont buy an N95 based mini pc! their built in graphics are horribly slow, like half the speed of the N100 chipset). Dinner is up but I'll look at the other mini PCs on sale afterwards.

  • Can someone tell me if this will run the Sims on it??

  • +1

The coupon I'm seeing brings it down to $580

    • yes looks like they changed the coupon, not as good as $530, but otherwise the cheapest this has been prebviously was $680 I believe.

  • +1

the coupon is up again now only $400

  • Power draw? Looking for something that's a little more powerful than n100, but similar, sub 10W power draw. Oh and ideally 2x2.5G eth ports

  • +3

    Also is a N95 with 16gb ram 512gb SSD for $169.98 - https://www.amazon.com.au/KAMRUI-Windows-Computer-Ethernet-B…
(Redeem 10% and get the coupon)
Not as good as the $99.99 one recently but not bad.

    • How can they be making any money at these prices?

      • when I bought the Chuwi Larkbox X (another Intel n100 based mini PC with 2x 2.5GB ethernet ports) in mid 2023 it cost me about $180 AUD - the prices for mini PCs increased for a while towards the end of 2023 and pricing is dropping again finally (probably because all the newer chipsets are on the near horizon so 'old stock' needs to be cleared out).

  • +1

    Good deal,
But I'm waiting for a Ryzen 7840 mini at this price

  • Hey guys, i got a stupid question…. What are these mini pc used for?
I mean apart from space saving…

    • +1

      office or nanna box

    • +1

Home theater PC and retro gaming box or anything that doesn't require a discreet graphics card.
Their super low power consumption means they are suitable to be left on all the time.
Most of them can be powered from 12V DC so they are good for caravans and camper vans too.

      • +1

I replaced my main desktop with a mini PC - handles O365, MS Teams / webcam and general work from home quite happily and uses bugger all power (about 1/10th over what my desktop would use). Also is good for overnight useet downloads / torrents and basically silent.

  • +1

I Legit thought that had a flashlight on top and was hoping it would and will be pretty cool

    • +1

there was a mini PC I saw today (probably news from CES) where it has a small tv screen built into the side of the case and it displays system info like CPU temp, CPU load, memory usage etc. etc. I love that geeky stuff.
