  • Not bad for a discontinued product. I'd suspect there would be more price drops from other retailers.

I'm confused. Is this the NEW iPad ? Or the "NEW" NEW iPad ?

Is the NEW iPad now called the OLD iPad ?

    • +3

I hope Apple regrets calling 3rd gen "new iPad" now. I mean, an item can only be considered 'new' for a few months to a year tops before being superseded. But they wanted 3rd gen to be called new Ipad forever.

I was at least expecting this new refresh early next year, not within the same year.

      • What has me really confused is that they've orphaned the "Old New iPad" & kept the iPad2 in their 'current' range - what the??? :o

        • +1

What has me really confused is…

It's weird, they should have gotten rid of the iPad2 and made things simpler by just having and Old New iPad and a New New iPad…

        • iPad 2 makes the mini look better than it not being there. Also makes larger iPad seem better value.

        • +1

's weird, they should have gotten rid of the iPad2 and made things simpler by just having and Old New iPad and a New New iPad… then if you buy a preowned New New ipad, you're getting an Old New New ipad.

But if you buy a preowned New New ipad, you're getting an Old New New ipad. Would that be better than a New Old New ipad?

        • The "old new iPad" has a retina display, but the GPU just doesn't do the screen justice in high-performance apps such as 3D gaming. Too many pixels to push.

The new new iPad has the A6X chip (same as iPhone 5) which will handle full-resolution 3D games a lot better.

So Apple keeps the iPad 2 as a cheap option, and the new retina iPad replaces the old one.

      • They wanted it to be difficult to know which version you were getting - that way the price of the obsolete items maintains its value.

Or did you think the Intel numbering scheme was supposed to help the customer and provide information?

  • +3

These iPads are the "old" new iPad (gen 3, 30 pin) not the "new" new iPads (gen 4, lightning connector, twice as fast) that were just announced.

Similarly, the iPod Touch is the "old" Touch, not the new ones with the 16:9 screen and lightning connector.

  • +1

Apparently Apple in the US is offering cash back for people that have recently bought iPad 3. I think I'll stick with my Nexus 7 for a while!

    • +2

So they should, the way they've done this is douchebaggery of the highest order IMHO!

      • my very first ipad (the old new ipad) becomes obsoleted in just half year.

fortunately, they released a 13" retina mbp not 15" that i have had only for less than 3 months.

        • +2

did your current ipad suddenly become slower?

apple always do this, all electronics brands do it. The smart thing to do is buy something because it best suits your needs, not because its the "newest" in the range.

I still use an ipad2 and love it. nothing is slow on it yet. don't even care I don't have retina.

        • Same here :)

        • Same here, me too.

What a useless response from the GG rep. Not even answering the above poster question. LOL

        • Yeah I know… lame response rep… Guess what?? Just bought 2 at uniquemobiles!!!

        • The link the Rep provided details what you need to do. In short bring in proof of lower price and they will refund the difference by 120%. Full details on the page the link takes you to.

        • Well not that sure… because on the link says only 120% refund for "Local competitor - A local bricks and mortar storefront, actively engaged in The Good Guys local retail market". Don't know why the rep doesn't want to clarify it here though.

        • It is possible he did not understand exactly what part of the 120% Guarantee you weren't sure about. Anyway, good to see you got a bargain price on a iPad.

Thebadguys trying to take people in loop by calling the old ipad (3rd Gen) a new ipad (4th Gen).

    • +1

It still is technically, the name Apple gave it. Just because it's not a "new" item anymore, doesn't mean the name isn't still "the new iPad".

Now it's even harder to distinguish between the two models by name (at least in a conversation), since Apple didn't officially call them 3rd gen or 4th gen.

  • Yeah apple did stuff up the naming they should of just said iPad (3rd Generation) when announcing it, on the box it just says iPad, people take it as a joke and call it New iPad. Anyways this is iPad (3rd Gen) and ipod Touch (4th Gen) apple is still selling ipod Touch (4th Gen) but not in 8GB anymore. If you are buying cellular models its best to get the iPad (4th Gen) or ipad Mini as it supports 4g Optus (Virgin) and Telstra in the CBD. Also not worth buying ipod touch (4th Gen) as it is 2 years old with A4 chip most likely it will get iOS 7 but not all the features will work on it. So the best thing to do is just wait a month let all the old models be sold out and buy the new models at similar prices.

  • +4

Apple's naming team sucks, even Gen4 was not named ipad4 but 'ipad with retina display". Apparently all the near future ipad will be retina screen so there might be more name confusion on'OLD" ipad with retina display and "NEW" ipad with retina display. Pity those shops sell them…

  • +1

LOL @ Crapple. Misleading title. People this is not the newest iPad. It is the previous 'New iPad' but its the 'Old' New iPad. iFail. Can't imagine about 5 years down the track. The old newer newest iPad 2017 model.

  • Man bought new ipad on launch day. Regret buying then, now with new new ipad out makes me want to throw it out the window.
Seriously apple? its not even a year old and now makes my new ipad automatically old ipad :(
Lost me as customer now. This is not cool at all, its like ps3 being replaced 6months later by ps4.

    • Calm down mate, it's not that old, CPU is the only diff and pretty sure it won't be 2 times faster as advertised. Other than that they are exact the same…oh, unless you are in love with the lighting cable…

      • lol I am calm. But I was expecting at least a year before an upgrade and knowing there's another better version makes me feel ripped off as I bought it not so long ago. I cant afford to keep buying every year but know its 6months later bam another model.

        • "I cant afford to keep buying every year"

How about you stop being a sheep and only buy one when you need one. Why is that everyone must always have the latest and greatest? If it still works as advertised and is still just as fast, I don't see why people would be even looking at getting the newer model.

        • Because they are ozbargained.

        • "How about you stop being a sheep"

Actually this was an upgrade from the 1st gen ipad I had before. I skipped ipad 2 and bought the ipad 3gen as felt the ipad 1st gen one was getting sluggish. So I am not a sheep. I even upgraded iphone 4 bought in 2010 to a galaxy s3 2 months ago. I was just a bit mad that it was replaced so fast as I will probably have it for next 2-3 years. Just sorta feel cheated as its usually every year it gets upgraded.

Anyways Ill stop my complaining now as its actually good that technology is getting better.

        • +3

It's a sad reflection on society when people feel the need to constantly update their expensive tech gadgets cos its not the latest and greatest anymore. Is there something wrong with their existing device? No. It's simply because it's not that shiny anymore.

It makes me cringe reading on whirlpool people who upgrade their phones and tablets every three months cos the latest one offering only marginal improvement is out. Sad, really. Guess what, im typing this on my iPad and low and behold it still functions and hasn't disintegrated at the announcement of the latest version!

You don't blame apple. You blame the fools who cry and whinge but hand over their cash anyway. If people werent so willing, these companies wouldn't be so haste to offer new products

        • +2

I don't get it… Apple updates iPad faster wouldn't make your iPad"3" any slower. Just use your iPad"3" until it start to feel sluggish and upgrade to whatever iPad available at the time (be it iPad6/7/8.

        • That's right. Upgrade your girlfriend / boyfriend more often instead.

        • It's a sad reflection on society when people feel the need to constantly update their expensive tech gadgets cos its not the latest and greatest anymore. Is there something wrong with their existing device? No. It's simply because it's not that shiny anymore.

Agreed. If you're pissed off because you bought an iPad 3 a few months ago, skip iPad 4 and get iPad 5 or 6 instead. Your 3 is still just as useable now as it was months ago when you bought it.

In a way, I'm kind of glad I missed out on those TGG 20% off gift cards and couldn't get an iPad 3 like all the cool OzBargainers did.

  • wouldn't this be a better deal?

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82821

    • no that is a second hand faulty item thats been repaired!

      • +1

Normally that is the case; but there seems to be a plausible school of thought that Apple is using the refurbished store to offload new but superseded units.

LOL, they were apparently trying to avoid some confusion over the new release…oh boy, has that horse ever bolted on them! :p

    • +3

They are "refurbished" old new ipads, not refurfbished new new ipads… of course they're going to be cheaper than "new" old new ipads !!!

      • +2

You do realise that this paradox is going to cause me to melt down, don't you? ;)

        • +1

just wait 6 months for the next apple announcement…

  • I'm still using iphone 3g… and the best part is that it still works. lol

    • My colleague got an iphone5 after he put his 3g together with iphone5…lol

  • ipad 4 is just around the corner and will work with Australian 4G.
the ipad mini is also coming soon

    • Ipad mini doesn't come with retina display. I will get ipad 4 for $150 extra.

  • Ipoad Touch 8GB white is a bit cheaper at OW for $159
