except you can fly to south america and back on classic reward tickets with 120k

      • +1

with free mars bars the whole way

      • -6

Classic rewards lol unless you are platinum, gold or silver the chances of getting a reward seat are slim to none

        • +2

Incorrect. I've been bronze (never hit even Silver once) and have travelled at least twice a year on Classic Rewards points to Asia/Europe/US.
You just have to know how to use the search function properly

        • You really dono…

    • +1

You can fly to Los Angeles in business class for 108k…

      • -7

Classic rewards seats are like winning the lotto if you can find one on Qantas.

        • +2

If I search for Classic Rewards from Sydney to Tokyo there is availablity almost every day from July to Dec 2024 (in economy, premium economy and business)

    • +1

Just in the past couple of months I have used 38k points for a pair of ASIC Kayano 30's worth $280ish and 65k points on a Breville Bambino Plus coffee machine worth $500 or so.

Both times they were doing 30% discount on points required so worth keeping an eye out for sales. I was about to buy these items anyway and check Qantas marketplace just on the off chance it was worth using points.

I have young kids so not doing much travel for a few years.

Is it just me or is AMEX the hardest card to get.

Havent had one for 3 years but have been rejected 3 times in the past 12 months.

Everywhere else is fine. Only have 1 card open. My only guess is they're not too fond of churners

    • Apparently they reject churners!!

I havent applied for one in 2 years but churn hard from other providers and am nervous about my application

      • Please report back with what happens, curious to know.

      • did you get it>?

        • Denied.

    • probably easiest for me, hardest one i ever had was ANZ, tried twice - good card…customer service was awful.

      • Yeh ANZ has the most restrictive credit policy I find. Most of their customer service just follow the policy blindly but sometimes you get a good service rep at ANZ who is willing to 'fudge' or overlook some 'minor' detail to get you over the line.

        • That was the crazy thing as I have good credit rating and no issues but seemed if I said I spent $150 on groceries I wasn’t eligible. Got there in the end though

    • Same here. Rejected a few times and then applied again today haha

      • how long between rejections and re-application?

    • Did you get rejected immediately? Or you went through the document upload/proof stage?

      • You get to sit around for 2 weeks while they assess your application only to receive a letter in the mail saying i'd been rejected.

  • +1

    does this work with referral?

    • Keen to know about this too

  • Are you only allowed to use the $450 travel credit with qantas? Can it be on points + pay?

    • $450 travel credit is through AMEX Travel portal.

      • Does it roll over at all? Or does it expire if you don't use it? I assume it expires?

        • +1

Yes, you have to use it within 12 months of receiving it and doesn't give you change from $450. The 2 lounge passes are only allocated after you've spent money on Qantas product or services e.g. flights, taxes and some say paying for carbon offset triggers the passes.

  • Possible to apply once for myself and another one for spouse?

    • We managed that with ANZ black

  • +1

Does anyone know what the minimum income has to be?

  • Wait so you can only use the $450 travel credit if the Qantas flight is more than $450 now?

    • +1

      yup + AMEX Travel Portal

      • So QF flight $360 + Hotel via Amex Travel Portal is okay?

        • Surely there'd be some kind of page you can test this with, make a dummy purchase, it should tell you how much it will take from travel credit and how much will come off your card.

          • @jvalkyrie: If I remember last time I did mine. I bought tickets to VN, with my Domestic leg with Qantas. Got the $450 discount. I am unsure about Hotels.

  • I'm getting 100k even in incognito. Tried on my phone in two different internet browsers and still can't get 120k to show up.

Anyone have any tips apart from using a VPN?

    • Update - it just worked on chrome for some reason. After 3-4 days of trying across various browsers, it was just a stroke of luck lol. Good luck all trying

  • +1

Is amex travel portal expensive than direct airline? Is $450 worth ?

    • +1

I have found amex travel to be approximately the same as Qantas direct…
However I do find Qantas direct/amex to be slightly more expensive than the same fares booked 3rd party.

  • Can anyone confirm if the David Jones American express card is considered a seperate product and therefore the 18month waiting period wouldnt apply for this card? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/644665
    Old post indicated so.

  • +1

    Are those points worth $450?

    • Approx 1.25c pp so 120k points is about $1.5k

    • They could be worth $5000+ depending on how you redeem them

    • +5

A good rule of thumb is to be conservative and estimate it as 1c pp as it's really easy to beat that but not by a significant amount. It's also then an easy conversion (divide by 100).

      • Thanks, do they expire or anything?

    • Just in the past couple of months I have used 38k points for a pair of ASIC Kayano 30's worth $280ish and 65k points on a Breville Bambino Plus coffee machine worth $500 or so when on sale ($799 RRP).

Both times they were doing 30% discount on points required so worth keeping an eye out for sales. I was about to buy these items anyway and check Qantas marketplace just on the off chance it was worth using points.

I have young kids so not doing much travel for a few years.

      • +1

        You can say that again!

    • Well if you upgrade with points on Qantas they can be worth many thousands on an equivalent fare. Using the points for items - probably. Best use of points by far is for redemption seats / reward seats.

Am just about to book a Bali fare for 14k points + $95 one way - equivalent seat is worth $300.

      • Not to mention the complimentary Wine Club membership (triple points on wine purchases and free delivery). Current 9x points WC promotion would get you 12 bottles of RRP$25 Chockstone Shiraz plus 15075 points (12K bonus points + 2700 promotion points + 375 at 1.25 points per $) for only $300
$395 gets you to Bali and a box of vino awaits your return.

      • Have seen flights to Bali go on special for not much more than that though

    • Can be if you intended paying for a flight worth >$450 in the next 12 months, the card becomes free. Alternatively, find a friend or relative flying and offer them $50-100 off their flight and book it for them. They get a cheaper flight, you get a great card, points and some lounge passes for $50-100

My wife is currently an additional / supplementary card holder on my Amex but she hasn't had any other Amex card in the past. Would she be eligible to apply for this card and still get the points?

    • i wanna know this too

      • +1

Response from Amex Chat: "Yes, if she has never been a primary cardholder in last 18 months, she will indeed be eligible for welcome bonus offer on her first Amex card."

  • Stupid Coles MasterCard gave me a $30k credit card, beware! (I just left the credit amount blank as previously was given $2k by Amex) and now I can't apply for any new cards, have cancelled but have to wait a month I reckon. Best thing is I'm not even working and my asset is an 9 year old Swift 🤣 looking for one with either or - travel insurance/extended warranty/no annual fee/international transaction fee free if anyone can suggest, cheers. Apologies for story of my life.

    • Why not just lower your credit limit on the card to 6K- once lowered it will only show the 6K lower value on your credit file as an active account, but it will likely show the initial credit enquiry at 30K.

      • Oh coz I wasn't getting any perks, it just had no annual fee so I thought while waiting for the next bargain I'd use it to save on interest.

      • do you know how long it takes for the new limit to show? thanks

  • Is there a critical time window for a Credit Query be done on your credit rating, that makes an application refusal more likely?
So like 2 in one month, bad. 1 a month ok?

    • I try and do 1 per month. But, it really depends on your total outstanding credits across your cards and other liabilities, and how long you have been in your job for etc. If you close a card off and apply within a day or so for new card, sometimes the new bank thinks this old card is still active and may call up asking why it wasn't included in your active card total, and then ask for a proof of closure letter. Having said all that, there have been several times when 2 applications have been made within a few days of each other with no noticeable negative effects on acceptance or credit score.

      • This is what happened, they just rejected my next applications so now giving it a couple of months

  • Excuse typos…

  • Anyone who has applied for this already, can you confirm if you can use Apple Pay instantly, or do you need to wait for the card to arrive?

    • +1

Need to wait for the card to arrive. Can’t activate the app without it.

      • +1

        Thank you

It seems like everyone and their dog are offering Qantas points lately. This leads me to believe they’re next to useless and almost impossible to actually claim a rewards flight.

    • +1

I flew round the world on business tickets last year using points. It’s difficult but not impossible. Points are extremely valuable if you know how to use them.

    • +1

As long as you are flexible on dates and routes it’s not that hard to use Qantas points. Example I flew first class Dubai to London, first class Singapore to Melbourne, business class Melbourne to Rome in last year all using Qantas points and have an up coming first class Sydney to Tokyo also on points.

      • +1

How much point did u have :o

        • +1

lol a lot but not as much as others. Maybe around 700k back then - all from churning cards. It’s not pricey points wise. First class Dubai to London was 89k qantas points flying emirates. First class Sydney to Tokyo is 129k Qantas points flying Japan Airlines

    • I've got business flights booked through reward seats from Sydney > HK > London

And also Rome > to Taipei and then premium econ back to Sydney

Like others have said it's not impossible you just have to be flexible and know how to search for it properly

    • Not as tough as you think but you do need to be creative and flexible in your itinerary. Like @Ghogger, I flew RTW in Business last year and doing another one this year with a mixture of classes. Hardest part is in and out of Oz but once in Europe or the US, you can use Oneworld partners to fly short hops in Economy. I flew New York to Chicago with AA for 5600 Qantas points (33% off points promotion) and $US5 taxes.

    • I somewhat agree, even though I just applied 😄. If these bonus point schemes add 100k worth of points to too many accounts, then the bean counters at Qantas are just going to dilute the monetary value of apoint or reduce the availability of reward seats.

  • +1

Any Virgin link for the same deal?

  • Damn. Got the 100k off the last deal. Shows 120k for me when using an incognito window. Is there anyway to make a referral show the 120k though? Was about to refer my wife but it still only shows up as 100k for a referral.

  • +3

What are some of the usual ways to spend $3k in 3 months on Amex?

    • +1

      bills

    • I used Sniip a few days ago to pay for my car rego

    • Flights and hotels for holidays. If paid with this card, you also get some very rudimentary insurance

    • Put some utility or phone bills into credit. Grocery gift cards. Buy me something.

    • +2

looks like you're lucky guy with struggling to spend 3k in 3 months 😅

  • +1

dang it i just signed up at the end of january and this extra 20,000 wasn't available yet. i just got the amex card on tuesday and activated.

is there a way for me to still get the extra 20,000?
i already have a QFF number for a few years already, can i use that or do i have to make a new one to make it work?

  • +1

    100k Chrome
    120k Firefox haha

  • +1

Man I've held on to a very old amex velocity due to the zero dollar fee. But I take it that counts as me holding an Amex, right?

I need the card though, often things like discount Apple cards and other transactions, my primary bank west gives me trouble purchasing.

    • As long as you have had the card for longer than 18 months you can directly apply with zero issues

  • +2

Is there any specific referral to use ? I'm always getting 100k incognito/ Firefox🥵

  • "An updated even higher earn rate than https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825421"

The way that's worded implies that this offer will earn points at a higher rate ie: greater than 2.25 and 1.25 per $ spent.
Is that the case? Or does the OP mean more bonus/sign up points compared to the other deal?

    • I believe OP is referring to the bonus points. 1.25/$ and 2.25 for Qantas products are standard earn rates.

  • Is it possible to get both this and current 20k bonus offer? Or not possible as to be eligible for that 20k bonus, you must apply through qantas card website??

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/829318#comment-14913854

    • Pretty sure you only need to register for the bonus then apply for a card via the card website directly. Worked that way when I got the bonus points with my ANZ card last year.

  • Anyone know where Amex do ther credit checks through? Experian, Illion, Equifax?

    • +2

      Equifax I believe

  • Couple of quick questions, can't seem to find this info, hope someone here can help. I haven't used AMEX in more than 5+ years.

    • Can I use this CC overseas and not incur the standard international transaction fees?
    • Can I use this CC to pay some of my HECS/AUSHELP debt with the ATO and will that count towards the $3k spend? I know it mentions you'll earn a reduced amount of points but not sure if it'll count towards the spend.

    Always appreciate this community!

    • Found the answer to first question: American Express charges a currency conversion fee1 of 3% of the converted amount of the transaction for each foreign currency purchase you make. So remember to factor these fees into your budget.

Can someone help me understand the payment of HECS/AUSHELP debt with ATO and if that counts towards the $3k spend.

      Thanks!
