[VIC] Melbourne Free Tram Zone Extends to MCG Precinct Stops from 16 to 18 February @ Public Transport Victoria

250

Don't shake off this temporary extension to Melbourne's Free Tram Zone as it is extended to cover up to the tram stops near the MCG, thanks to Taylor Swift. Handy for visitors staying in the CBD to get to the concert for free or enjoy a stroll though Melbourne Park and along the Yarra River.

The temporary extension to the Free Tram Zone will be from the CBD boundry up to:

  • Stop 11: Jolimont Station/MCG on Routes 48 and 75.
  • Stop 7C: John Cain Arena/MCG Gates 4-7 on Routes 70, 70a, 75a

  • So they can afford their super expensive concert tickets but they can't pay for their $5.30 myki 2 hours fare?
Why should every Victorian pay for their transport cost?
    How can that benefit me?

    • +29

      Now we got bad blood?

      • +2

Maybe for Dan, it used to be mad love.

    • +23

Probably more about avoiding massive traffic jams by encouraging more people to tram instead of driving to see Tay Tay.

    • +12

      You got to calm down

    • +8

      "How can that benefit me?"

      Selfish conservative nutjob identified.

      • +4

Doesn't have to be conservative, despite talking like if they were the shiniest snowflake…

    • +7

I'd say to reduce the congestion. The number of people at Taylor's concert will be massive and I am 100% sure fans without tickets will also want to gather around the Stadium. Imagine everyone touching on and off and see how much delay that it would add up for the night. Also this event did attract quite a fair bit of oversea travellers to this concert so I don't see anything wrong with making the concession there.

      • +8

        Yeah.

The City of Melbourne estimates Swift will bring in more than $1 billion to the city's economy alone, during the three touring nights there.

Like it or not, it's a big event for the city. And some are like "it doesn't make sense to me, so it shouldn't be".

        • -3

They will still come to Melbourne with or without free tram. $5.30 is nothing to them.
There is no EXTRA benefit from offering free transport to them, in the cost of mine.

I prefer spending extra on more reliable ambulance, extra police during night time and better infrastructure.

          • +4

@TanedaR: You might be missing the scale and how the society works here.

It's not about whether people can afford $7.20 (return on a weekend) but rather if they jump in the car instead, which is something noone wants, but for families it might be simply cheaper. And more convenient.

            • -4

              @pizzaguy: Invalid argument.

No one will stop driving just because of the free tram zone.

              • if they are a big family, they will still go ahead and pay for parking anyway.
              • if they take the train, they've paid for Myki fare already.
              • if they live in the city, anyone with common sense is not going to make his way from CBD to mcg by car.
              • tourist, oh great, they don't have to pay for transport now but they don't care anyway. They don't have a car.

Again, I don't see how free tram zone will change anything and get EXTRA benefit.

Also, Unlike NYE free transport that brings everyone to the city and generates revenue for CBD businesses, bringing people from CBD to the MCG will generate nothing. $0.

              • +1

@TanedaR: Since you seem to have done your sociostudies and from that you're sure that extending the zone a little for three days won't impact people's decisions or the traffic, then it's also pointless to continue that debate.

The only impact seems to be that people consider it as a nice gesture on a concert day - three of which are expected to bring city one billion dollars (!).

Because those who already paid for PTV, or decided to go by car, or wouldn't catch a tram from the CBD if it was $5.30 don't affect the situation. Right? But then why would you start this whole thread?

  • +15

Not sure why they don’t do this for all major events held at the MCG…

    • +1

Or year round… the free tram zone isn’t set in stone

  • +2

Why can't they extend one more stop to Crown/ Jeff's shed

  • -1

What's the point? Many people will be starting their journey from a non-free zone and will have to tap on. Once tapped on, free or paid doesn't make much difference.

    • +8

If I had to guess, it's due to the numbers of people going through - tapping your myki takes time and they want throughput. Which I think is the reason they introduced the free tram zone in the first place.

  • +1

Should do this for the formula 1

    • +9

They already do… Public transport is the easiest way to travel to the circuit, with free tram services for ticket holders on event days running from Southern Cross Station for Gates 1, 2 and 3, and from Flinders Street Station for Gates 5, 8 and 9.

      • I didn't know that

    • +5

No point in letting F1 fans travel for free to MCG.

  • Waiting for the Tram Free Zone offering.

  • +5

Just to make it clear. The point is to lessen the amount of Myki swipes that will bottleneck the mental amount of people travelling to the G for this. It's not just ticketholders.

    • Is this an insiders' knowledge or a suspicion? Honest question.

      • +2

"Insider" so far as I work for public transport and have heard first hand about this.

  • +3

    Free Tram Zone (Taylor’s Version)

  • Or you know, they could just walk. It's seriously not that far. 1.3 kilometres from Flinders Street steps to the MCG via Birarrung Marr and the Bridge.
