Thanks for sharing, unfortunately my quote was $1400 vs $800 from AAMI. Worth a try but also worth shopping around as this deal won't be for everyone as you say 🙂

    • +2

Same… even with the discount AND cashback AAMI was much cheaper and with a lesser excess!

    • AAMI is cheaper because they don't allow you to choose the repairer, instead they go for their own certified repairers whom they screw down the costs on.

Whereas this one is insured through QBE and they allow you to opt-in to choose your own repairer.

This policy also allows agreed price, which is better because market value is another way they screw you - your cars worth can drop by $1000s in a year on RedBook and you won't know until you make a claim.

I actually went to the QBE web page to get a quote for comparison, and it was ~$1000 more expensive!

So this is definitely an OzBargain.

  • True, My quote - $1989 vs Budget Direct - $1486, $500 difference.

fyi cashback approved quite fast. so you can swap and get a refund

    • what is the cooling off period for this?

      • Just get partial refund for unused portion if the annual premium

    • Wow this is hardcore :)

  • quote is $2300 vs existing $1300 with coles

  • Quote is $800 more expensive than RAC. They can shove that $75.

  • Quote is insanely expensive

RACV is pricy but this is like 500+

This is not the Ozbargin I know and love

    • This is QBE though, and they have more options like chose-your-own repairer and agreed price.

I put a comparative quote through QBE and it came up a $1000 more, AusPost was $2k and QBE was $3k.

It is an OzBargain in that regard.

  • Insurance might be on of those things that's impossible to call a deal for everyone.

RAC used to be my best option. Now its $1000+ more expensive than others.

I hear lot's of people recommend AAMI, but for me they are $400+ more expensive, and Coles won't even offer a quote.

    • might be IS.

So many variables, most of which are covered in the questions they ask. Your suburb/region alone could cost you more, or less.

  • Interesting feedback, on the back of AAMI being mentioned a few times, thought I'd check them out again, where I ended up paying $863 with auspost, nearest identical policy quote with AAMI was $1279. Several years ago I moved away from AAMI as at the time the policy wording could be interpreted as having to list every driver, and we have under 25's in the family, and when including under 25's the fee doubles or worse. With Auspost you dont have list every driver, as long as you are aware that an unlisted under 25 will trigger an exorbitant excess. And FYI - Today AAMI's policy wording is unambiguous, everyone driving has to be on the policy.
Back to Auspost, what was also interesting was the difference in fees when located in Sydney's northwest which was $863, vs being located 5 hours inland in NSW in a small town, the latter reduced the fee to $535/year.

    • Did you try a quote from the actual insurer, QBE? My 2023 premium with AusPost was one third ~$500 lower than QBE itself were asking - all variables were the same. Needless to say I dumped QBE and went with, er, QBE(AP). They, and most insurance companies, rely on customer complacency/fatigue/lack of knowledge.

      • And that complacency/fatigue in the context of renewals is often referred to as the lazy tax, which is what brought this post about, received renewal paperwork substantially higher than the previous fee so had a quick peek at alternatives, but looks like everyone has upped their fees and ended going with a new policy (not renewal) with Auspost/QBE, as for my circumstances that offered best bang for buck.

  • Thanks OP, this deal worked for me. Aust Post beat Coles and AAMI and QBE and Woolworths, and that was before the cashback. Thank you.

    • Great to hear. And whilst typing here, have an update on the cashback, my payment was $862.90 on the 15th, and cashback was reported as $81.65 on the 17th. That means the base amount for cashback is 81.65/11*100= $742.27 which matches the premium before the combined fire services levy and GST and stamp duty.

  • just an enquiry, i can't use cashrewards for this one? specifically, i need to get the rewards through shopback? sorry guys, still a noob when it comes to doing rewards :(

    • +1

Just checked both Cashrewards and Shopback. Cashback via Cashrewards is now showing as 7% (previously none) and Shopback continues to be 11%. So you can do Cashrewards again, just not as favourable as Shopback though.

  • copy that, thank you so much for the input

  • as I am completing the signup, where do I get the $75 off? or is it already applied during application? also, how do i get the shopback for it? again sorry for the noob question

    • +1

$75 is saving compared to organising the same type of insurance via different means, for example via phone, or via a renewal. The price quoted is after the $75 discount having been applied. With regards to cashback, pls check the shopback site for finer details of how it all works, but in summary, in my experience a cashback tracking email follows in the hours or days after the transaction, and is confirmed a few weeks or months later. Once confirmed you can initiate a transfer of that cashback amount to your paypal or bank account and do with it as you please. Good luck.

      • thank you so much, appreciate the help

This popped up yesterday, Choice is comparing lots of car insurance companies https://www.choice.com.au/compareproducts/money/insurance/ca…

Could be helpful for those not sure where to start

The table content is consistent with feedback provided by others, shows the Auspost/QBE arrangement is lower cost in NSW than in other states, and that others are more competitively priced in states other than NSW

Please make sure you do research, mileage (pun intended) varies widely.

has anyone claimed through aus post? is their customer service 24/7?

    • Dunno but it's likely you'll be patched through to QBE. Don't think they're 24/7 but I found them to be very good as long as you keep pushing them on progress.

      Just found this: https://mozo.com.au/insurance/car-insurance/australia-post

How to make a car insurance claim with Australia Post
When you’re in an accident or something goes wrong with your vehicle, you may need to make a claim on your Australia Post car insurance.
***The insurance offered by AusPost is underwritten by QBE, and they’re the company you need to contact when making a claim. You can call QBE on 133 723 or lodge your claim online. ***
