Usual fake deals. For instance today coles has “half price” of Cadbury Favourites 520g for “only” $11, “down” from $22. aldi sells it for $10.99

    P.S. also Grainwaves were “half-price” 2 weeks ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/grain-waves

People happy to score a fake deal on Colesworth are one of the reasons they have the power they have now.

What's Colesworth? I've never heard of that term

    • This Colesworth oligopoly really needs to be broken up by looking into ways such as their divestiture to increase competition. Unfortunately our PM confused this with nationalisation (as in the Soviet Union) which is really totally different thing with a completely opposite purpose. Divestiture means the forced selling of part of their business to one or more new market entrants (which would still be in private controls) to increase competitions. A good example was the of breaking up of AT&T in the 80s to drive competition in the Telco market in the US.

We had a chance of having some healthier competition with Kaufland but what we got is this ACCC “investigation” from January 2020:

The ACCC is going to investigate claims about why Kaufland decided to abandon its plans in Australia.

It seemed like an odd decision. Why quit when you've put money into hiring hundreds of employees, choosing over 20 sites for stores and starting work on a distribution centre?

According to Australian Financial Review reporting, it wasn't just because Kaufland wanted to concentrate on Europe.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is going to look into claims that major food suppliers were not going to supply Kaufland because they were worried about retribution from Woolworths Group Ltd (ASX: WOW) and Coles Group Limited (ASX: COL).

According to one supplier, Kaufland apparently saw that it wouldn't have been able to secure the best supply deals, which would have led to losses for a number of years for the retailer.

        Source: https://www.fool.com.au/2020/01/24/accc-to-look-into-kauflan…

Speaking to the AFR, ACCC chairman Rod Sims said: "We'll definitely have a look at this. Agreements between competitors not to supply certainly raises cartel concerns and the law is pretty clear on this. Even if it's less than [cartel behaviour] you can also deal with it now under concerted practices.

And what a look ACCC had! Still looking but, I guess, making sure ColesWorth and Qantas do not have any competition is “in the national interest”.

A good case study of how oligopoly works by pressuring suppliers is here…
        https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/duluxgroup-stops-pa…

When there was a new competitor to Bunnings, they allegedly pressured Dulux, who had the biggest market share in paints not to supply the new players. If you stop a couple of large suppliers in categories such as milk, bakery etc, new entrants will be forced to walk away.

Did grainwaves shrink in serving size? I got one recently after a long time and felt the package got smaller, or am i tripping?

    • You have fine senses. It used to be 175g many years ago.

      • +1

Actually Gainwaves used to be 210g $1.75 then went to 175 g & the price doubled of course I used to buy them all the time but stopped when they started their shrinkflation tricks .

        • yeah right 210g!!! sheesh!! shrinkflation. The double dipping in profits always hurts!! smaller and more pricey.

    • +1

I wondered. I was also reminded of the old Cadbury ad slogan where they always promised "a glass and a half of milk in every 200g block" when I saw Cadbury Dairy Milk Block Chocolate 160g-190g.

      • +5

It still has a glass and a half of milk in every block - it's just a shot glass now.

  • Grainwaves us to be 175g and not long ago were $1.87 half price special. World has gone mad and we are all suffering now. Imagine in a few years and then 5, 10 years from now. Be lucky if Ill get a packet of Grainwaves and a bottle of Coke for under $20…this is ridiculous.

    • Got your back. My dad loves Grainwaves but from the time it's gone up from 1.87 he does not even bother.

By then we'll have digital currency with expiry dates tied to some kind of social credit system.

    This basically promotes Aldi?

Colesworrh do need some FAT fines (which are disbersed back to actual customers in the form of Flybuys points etc) for lying about discounts from RRP. No point fattening gov regulator coffers…bad as each other.

Good opportunity to point out Foodland (SA) has 1kg Conroy bacon for $6.99, 250g Mcvities Digestive choc biscuits $1.99, Party Size 380g Red Rock or Smiths chips for $4.25, Various types of ham from the deli section $12- $17/ kg, Rump steak $12.99, scotch fillet $15.99, Weetabix 500g (Pasadena) $1.59.

Also, as of Wednesday I saw Aldi Pork Legs are $7.99.

    Ie..actual discounted items.
