  • Just curious, how does this compare to the Intel price equivalent?

    • +6

These would only be good for existing systems. For a new system you're better off with the 13600/14600K or 13700/14700K/7900

Thanks for your feedback, it seems like intel has taken over the price performance at the moment

        • +2

Depends, you still have to factor in power usage, that's not free for most people. Still, good that intel is competitive, keeps AMD from 'doing an nvidia' with CPU prices.

          • @Borkbork: Ah so AMD is that much more efficient atm, that's interesting, thanks for the feedback ๐Ÿ‘Totally agree, competition is always welcome !

            • -1

@wonderboy4: I'd say a 14600K would be faster and more power efficient for most people. The 5900X would only edge out if you always have it running at 100%.

              • @BROKENKEYBOARD: Thanks for you're feedback, I was thinking the Intel must still be very efficient due to the efficiency cores ๐Ÿ‘

                • +2

@wonderboy4: Nah Intel are pushing their chips to the limit to compete, so they gobble up power. I really depends what you want the chip for and the budget. 7800X3D seems to be the go to for gaming if budget allows. Also keep in mind the AMD boards will support future chips, Intel won't.

                  • @Froglotion: Thankyou, this is interesting, it looks like I will have to watch some reviews in order to catch up, because there seems to be some conflicting views here. But it's really good to hear some different opinions and the point you make about board support is a very good one, cheers ๐Ÿ‘

5950X was down to $570 a couple of weeks ago. Was tempted then but decided to just hang out for zen5 and do total upgrade.

5900X at $430 is probably about the right price for people still on AM4 who want a cheap upgrade for productivity apps. For gaming you're better off with a 5700X3D/5800X3D.

    • +2

Yeah I'm still on AM4 (2600!) and can't quite justify the extra cost to upgrade the whole system. I'd like to go for a 5800X3D but it's currently still about $100 more than the 5900X here. Hard to justify an additional 20%, especially since an ultrawide 1440p monitor means my GPU is the bottleneck rather than the CPU. The 5900X would definitely be "good enough" for gaming and a significant upgrade over my current CPU, and I can put those savings towards a better GPU.

        Try the 5700X3D for $350!

        • Yeah it's an interesting option and very tempting for gaming only. I do occasionally dabble in music production and photo editing too, where the 5700X3D is a bit poor, so I'm on the fence…

I'm probably keep sitting on the fence until the 9800X3D is out, if past history is any guide!

          • +2

@tophorus: If you're gaming at 1440p and above, but need good productivity, then the 5900x is a good compromise - you get the extra 4 cores, higher clock speeds, and 64MB of L3 cache - less than the 96MB on the 5700X3D, but still double that on the standard 5700X/5800X.

Having a 3900x, debating on whether I should upgrade ๐Ÿค”

    • It depends on whether you can hold off until either EOFY (should be good deals on Zen4), or later this year when Zen5 releases.

Otherwise If you have enough ram and a good mobo, and you are absolutely hammering your cpu now then go for the 5950X - it will give you a significant bump over the 3900x.

    • Same I have 3700x, there's nothing at the moment I use that I struggle to run so I really can't justify an upgrade yet

  • 5950x is now $544.35 from Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0815Y8J9N

    • Damn, I missed that, I would have been into it otherwise.
