Who has steam deck and what games have you been playing with it?

    • +24

Got it for a long time but collecting dust for a long time after finished all series of nekopara

      • +1

        + for nekopara

      • -1

Steam deck seems to heavy to be held with one hand

    • +6

I have the LCD model. My most played games are Spiderman and Forza 4, which run great. It runs most games fine, if you set your expectations right. The gyro aiming is great for FPS games, and the steam control customisation allows a lot of flexibility for dialling in control schemes.

    • +16

I've been hopelessly addicted to Balatro. I get like 5-6 hrs battery life on my OLED

      • +2

That game looks sick. Thanks for the rec 👌

      • +5

        How bloody GOOOOODDDD is balatro?!?!!!

I’d recommend buying this just for that sweet sweet on the go balatro goodness.

****I may be slightly addicted to gambling

        • +1

It's ruining my life. I love it.
I had a 3 hour plane right Saturday and it went by in a blur thanks to Balatro.

          • +3

@theguyrules: I have 1 hr lunch sometimes and the other day… I played 1.5 hours and didn’t even get stuck into my zinger box…

      • +1

Another Balatro addict here. If anyone hasn't played it, definitely do.

      • That game is crack. I thought slay the spire was addictive. Close but no.

        • My wife watched me play it on the plane and didn't get why I was so addicted. I also can't explain why. I guess just "big numbers".

        • +2

for what it it was, slay the spire slapped pretty hard i gotta say.

    • +8

Balatro, Spider-man Remastered, Brotato, Binding of Isaac, Yakuza 0, Batman Arkham series games, Hades, Risk of Rain Returns, Neon Abyss, Rogue Legacy 2, Ori and the Blind Forrest, Dredge, Dead Cells, Cuphead and Hollow Knight.

There's more if you want though, I haven't listed anything emulated yet.

      • +3

Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Fallout 4 (for 100+ hours). Resident Evil 4 remake (3 times over), Alan Wake, Control, GTA V, Lake, Life Is Strange 3, The Stanley Parable, Uncharted 4, Tomb Raider, Terminator Resistance, Robocop, Days Gone, Real Myst.

    • +12

I have this model and love it. The ability to pick it up and be back in a game under 10 secs is magical.

Especially when you are time poor and two young kids.

      • +4

This is the shining feature for me. There is no messing about. Power on. Choose the game, and you're up and running. I have the Ally too and I hate it because of windows. Update required. Reboot required. Upon reboot, update required. Drivers update required, armory crate update required. Drives me nuts. By the time I get through the updates, I can't be bothered actually playing a game. I use the Steam Deck OLED for 98% of the games, and the Ally for the other 2% if the steam deck can't run the game.

        • You know that you can dual boot steam deck, right?

    • +3

I got mine a week ago, and so far Children of Morta.
I also have a gaming PC and a PS5 and so far only use the deck for quick gaming sessions in between other stuff. I haven't even taken it out of the house yet.

Got 15 min to kill? Steam Deck. Booting up my PC and loading RDR 2 will take 5 minutes on its own. Waking the SD from sleep and continuing with my run, less than 5s. 30s if it's in the other room and I have to go fetch it.

      • How does RDR2 play on the SD?

        • Really well. It's one of the most surprising Steam Deck games for me.

          • @theguyrules: My biggest fear with the SD is the reduced resolution making a bit of a mess of games designed for a higher res.
Are there any games where that's been an issue?

            • @BinaryPirate: Definitely some. You can run Cyberpunk 2077 but you have to use FSR up scaling which fan make it a bit blurry / smudgy.
RDR2 is sharp though and runs at a solid 40fps

        • Pretty well. I kept it on default settings, which is ultra textures but the rest is low, no upscaling, no vsync. I get mid 40s to mid 50s in the woods and high 30s to low 40s in Saint Denis. The game still looks gorgeous, due to the great screen.

That said, the objects in the distance sometimes look a little soft, and I struggle to see enemies more than when I'm playing on my PC. I played it just to see how it runs, I'll rather stick to playing it on my PC on a nice big monitor and high resolution.

I am getting older and need new glasses though.

          • +1

@WorstAgreeableRadish: I'm going to commit a bit of heresy here. I don't mind if a game runs at 30fps if there's no micro-stuttering, tearing or other interruptions to smooth visuals like pop-up. Pop-up, load times & game price was what pushed me away from consoles, otherwise that level of performance is fine with me (I skipped the PS4, 5 & equivalent Xboxes).

Not being able to see objects on screen does seem to be a bit of a drawback. As you say, however, the desktop/laptop is always there for those titles.

    • +3

I have had a LCD one for a while now (upgraded to 2TB and also have a 1GB SDcard in it)
Best thing about it is that most of your pc library becomes accessible for it!

      Binding of issac
      Hades
      Vampire survivors
Im working my way through borderlands now that I saw theres a movie trailer on it
Bought armored core for it but havent spent to much time with that game

      • +1

Try deep rock galactic survivor if you like vampire survivor etc

    • +6

Most recently, Dave the Diver! It's perfect for the Steam Deck in my opinion.

I tend to play less graphic intense games on it and leave those for my desktop.
Some other games I've played on Steam Deck:

      Slay the Spire
      Halls of Torment
      Fable: Anniversary
      Kitaria Fables
      This is the Police
      Stranded Sails
      Going Under
      Octopath Traveller 2
      Coromon

I've recently bought a JSAUX Docking Station from Amazon for my TV, so I've been experimenting with games on that so far with an xbox controller.

Fave thing about the Steam Deck is definitely putting it to sleep mid game and it resuming days later at the same place. Makes life easier with games that have save points so far apart..

      • How is like docked to the TV? I hear graphics don't have to be high in hand held mode to help with performance. Does it look bad on the TV though?

        • It's not the best looking - but depends what you want to use it for.
I'm currently trying Planet of Lara on it which is pretty and works well.

I loaded Dragon Ball Z Karkarot on it and it seems alright, I'm not much for fighting games however! This is a game that looks awkward on my ultrawide monitor, so I wanted to see it on the TV.

I did find an issue with recognising my controller. Apparently there is a bug sometimes when your steam deck goes to sleep, it then won't recognise your controller in game (but steam menus are fine). So this blocked my limited time to test on the weekend!

          • @Jaded: Just an fyi I've been able to fix this by pressing the steam button, going to controller settings, readjusting the controller order then swapping it back. Should work on all steam deck compatible games. Happy gaming!

    • Against the storm, Cult of the Lamb, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Slay the Spire, Backpack Hero, Hades, Diablo 4

    • Dead Cells. 270+ hrs on it.

    • I played rdr2, spider man, ff bio crisis core. It’s also my switch emulator and ps5 portal rolled into one. It does everything I love it.

    • +2

Takes a bit to set up but i run a pair of apps. Sunshine on pc and moonlight on SD.

I stream all my AAA games off it and get 90fps with 8ish hours of battery.

When im on the go (i.e away from wifi) i play hades, cult of lamb, and dave the diver.

      • I was thinking just this. I've got a Switch Lite that barely gets played and I'm mulling over getting a Steam Deck instead. I use Moonlight on my Apple TV to stream to my Living Room TV, and if the experience is great on the Steam Deck, then it might just be worth pulling the trigger.

        • Yeah I use moonlight on my steamdeck and it's fantastic - especially the OLED at 90hz. And I dock it to my TV and can stream my PC at 1080p/120hz or 4k/60hz and it's seamless!

          • @jk82: Good to know. I think it'll be one of those things I barely touch, so I'm going to consider getting something like a Backbone and using my iPhone for Moonlight. If I use that all the time, then a Steam Deck could make sense in the future.

            • @thrillhouse: I have also tried a lenovo y700 with a gamesir g8 galileo. Had to break off some stoppers on it but it fits nicely. That tablet screen is hands down better screen if you exclusively game at home.

i stick with the SD because i travel for work and enjoy low latency when playing games like hades.

      • I bought this for the same reason. Is the latency noticeable?

        • I get about 15-30ms latency which is fine for me. I wouldnt play competitive fps games on it.

My setup has my pc connected to router over 1gbit ethernet, which really really helps.

    • World of Warcraft

    • -1

I play things like Dave the diver and Dredge on mine

    • I've had the OLED for a couple of months now and LOVE it. I mainly use it to emulate PS2 games from my youth. But, I've also been playing Sunset Overdrive and Stray.

    • Actually just took mine to a LAN for a mate to use as a PC while we were there. Plugged it into a USB-C monitor, experience was flawless. Quake Champions, Rocket League, Serious Sam, Wreckfest, Titanfall - good times!

    • Stardew valley. Telltale's Walking Dead. Subnautica (although can't get mod support working so only put in about 10hrs)

  • Happy with my upgraded 1tb lcd version for now. I’ll wait till they release whatever’s next

  • Helldivers 2!

    • What kinda fps you getting?

      • +4

Havent checked but smooth enough and totally playable… Id say at least 35-40fps… I will check tonight and report back, for democracy!

      • +1

So without playing around with settings at all really, on 'medium' graphics preset its doing 25-30fps, on 'low' 35-40…

Both are totally playable and im sure can tweak it better to squeeze a bit more out.

Battery life not sure but I would say 2.5-3hrs.

  • Im actually tempted by this… I have a lightly used (maybe 10 charges) LCD model, which I have put the 2TB HDD in, which I would sell.

Not sure what a fair price is for a used 2TB LCD model though?

  • Damn only if they decrease the price for the 1TB model as well.

    • +1

      $150 is not bad. It's $US100 officially.

A 1TB drive would cost you about $90.
A matte screen protector is $10. (Not exactly the same)
And you get the special case with removable liner.

      • Hi there, does the 1 tb model come with a case and screen protector?

        • It does not come with a screen protector but the actual screen is matte instead of glossy.

It comes with 2 cases. A slim case that fits inside the big case.

        • +1

It doesn't come with a screen protector, the 1TB just has the anti-glare etched glass. Both the 512GB and the 1TB come with a carrying case but the 1TB includes a silmmer liner that you can take out of the case.

      • Shame I couldn't make up my mind to order the 1TB one without seeing in person if I'd hate the etched glass.

What games better playing with joysticks better than mouse? Trying to justify..

    • +1

      METRODIMANIA

    • +3

DmC series , GoD of WaR. Spiderman, Alan wake series, The Ascent, Souls games. The point is any 3rd person Action/RPG/Adventure game also Twin Stick Shooters. And then there are Side scroller, 2d games too.

    • +1

Pretty much any arcadey style game.

It was annoying for me playing RDR2 on PC because I wanted the aiming of the mouse, but the controls of the controller….

      • +1

You can get one of those high rise joystick cap to improve aiming on controller

        • +1

I can aim just fine with a controller… but nothing beats the mouse aiming. RDR2 with a mouse + the gun play = easy mode.

          • @Ruddaga: I see, or you can buy the steam deck and use it as controller for PC since it has trackpad as well (you can set it as mouse)
but only if the game support simultaneously controller + mouse input

you can use steam controller as well but that has been discontinued and hard to find

            • @dione: I have a steam controller lying around somewhere. Wasn't really a fan of it tbh.

  • -1

I almost bit the bullet on this until I did some research and got the Asus ROG using OW price match for 1054.
Now enjoying all my steam titles, switch games, retrogames and windows games.
    I don't think I made a mistake

    • +7
    • +1

the ally struggles with frame pacing and even though hit hits higher average frames, it gives a worse experience than the deck which almost always has significantly higher 1% and 0.1% frame times. the ally is a stuttery mess. windows is a joke for gaming. my 2080 super is a stuttery mess compared to my SD. i didn't notice it until i noticed how unbelievably smooth 60fps can look when it doesn't stutter.

      • -1

Honestly I've been heavily using my ally for a couple weeks and love it. not a single time i said anything about frame pacing lol. Games look nice, I'm having fun, the screen is great, I'm happy.

        • +2

my point wasn't that you won't enjoy the ally, or notice the frame pacing. it's that you won't notice the "lower frames" on the deck. given that the deck has a dignificantly better software experince i'm saying the deck is a better choice. enjoy your ally, hadnhelds are amazing. Just giving the info to anyone on the fence.

          • @JigBew: Please specify you're talking about steam games or other emulators

            • @samsal46: the ally isn't an emulator, i never mentioned them? i didn't proof read my comment tho, meant to say the steam deck has better 1% frame rates, not higher frame times. it rarely seems to matter what is running though. windows is poorly optimised for gaming.

  • +1

Cheers OP, didn't bite the bullet myself on the last few deals, couldn't resist this time around.

Pairing this with the JSAUX Mod Case which is $39 on Amazon at a discount, and I'm set.

  • -1

    It must be nice!

  • Project Zomboid surely would be fun on this too?

    • +4

I tried to get into it… but I think it’s really best enjoyed with keyboard and mouse especially if you haven’t played since the original alpha release and there’s about a billion changes and tool tips you actually want to read…

Has anyone ever tried to claim warranty from one of these ebay sellers? I've got a few minor hardware issues with mine, but not sure if it's worth the hassle

    • I contacted the seller on eBay last week. This was in regards to "excessive over heating" so I asked if it was normal or if it was a fault.

They sent me the standard checkliat. Have you done this that have you made sure it's ventilated have you lowered this setting and also then said to contact valve in regards to the issues…

I was kinda pissed off. Haven't replied yet and if they want me to talk to valve and then talk to them

I don't see the point of me buying from them. Unless they are just assuming it's user error and deterring people that are not persistent enough or well versed around warranty and returns

I think peoples mileage may vary

  • Did any play ea fc 24 under window boot?

    • +1

As far as I know windows on steam deck oled specifically is not functioning very well. Driver issues mostly and just unstable

      • Thanks foe the confirmation.

  • -1

Tempted but I have a PC PS5 and switch. Tbh it's not comparable but I'm just waiting for the switch 2

    • In the same boat. My PC is 10 years old or something now. Will not support Win11, and I've had trouble getting some Steam games to work on Linux.

I was thinking of getting a Steam Deck just so I can replace my PC, and carry it around with me when I travel.

      • Which games have you had problem running on Linux?

Also, installing Windows in Steam deck is relatively straightforward if you can follow instructions. I dual boot so I can use game pass on Windows for my Steam deck.

        • I can't remember, but I can tell you which games worked flawlessly. Anything from Valve ran amazingly.

One of them was Tomb Raider or something. I think the audio was choppy. Same hardware as the Win10 installation.

    • +4

      Shit opinion more like

      • -3

        nah shit device.

    • +2

its a nice device but way overpriced

      • +3

And it will continue to be overpriced unless and until Gabe Newell gets over his butthurt feelings from the ACCC and actually releases it here in Australia.

It can even be an exclusive at EB or JB if he prefers not to go full on in Australia, unlike the rest of the world where he does.

        • +1

It should be in $900s but even that is a bit pricey for a handheld I feel

  • can it play microsoft flight sim?

  • +2

I own one and this deal is good. Got mine brought back through a friend for maybe 900$, so this is a pretty good deal.

Probably the best purchase I’ve made this year especially when on flights and being bored to death.
