Qantas Return: Tokyo $905, Bengaluru $954, Singapore $601, HKG $882, Shanghai $771, Seoul $914, Bangkok $884 @ Beat That Flight

Megapost: Qantas is having a massive Asia sale, with fares roughly between March and December. All flights include checked luggage, food, movies etc.

There are actually cheaper ones where say, one leg is with Cathay, or another airline and those will show, but i've tried to only show tickets where ALL legs are Qantas, so you can maximise those Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

I've done a scan and found a bunch of example fares from the capital cities.

Interesting to notice that Hobart is often a lot cheaper than other capitals!

Don't forget there are hotels on sale too.

$950 for Sydney to Tokyo still seems pretty meh.

Anyone have a wild guess to how much Jetstar return flights would run during their usual birthday sale?

  • +19

    Tokyo:
I would probably spend the extra money and go with JAL.
2-4-2 economy on their 787s versus 3-3-3 on QFs 787s and MUCH more legroom.

If you are Qantas Silver, Gold, Platinum, Platinum One or Chairmans Lounge you will still have benefits with your Oneworld Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald status.

    Hong Kong:
Cathay Pacific is superior to Qantas and worth the $100-$200

    • +4

JAL is amazing! I didn’t feel the blah/yuk feeling after any other economy flight I’ve done! I felt fresh even after 10hours in the plane!
I’ve also flown JQ to Phuket and I felt like dog balls after that flight

    • Would you do it for ANA vs QF? I found a deal for ANA that’s around 1k with free domestic flights

      • +1

ANA all the way, unless if you are a religious Qantas flyer or something lol

  • Wt is this pricing with Qantas? ADL to Singapore $908, Hong Kong $913, Seoul $932, Tokyo $1052.

    Just so over it… 😪

    • +2

      What do you mean?

      • -7

Singapore from Adelaide was never this expensive. Its a result of flight cuts out of Adelaide especially by Qantas.

Also, just looking at the ADL > TYO and Virgin is sub $1000 for same Nov dates. Sure, it's via half of QLD but still…

        • +3

If Qantas had their way they'd cut flights everywhere other than Sydney. Qantas is Sydney's airline, not Australia's

        • +5

          Virgin Australia?
          Hybrid Carrier
          737 MAX 8
No Food Included/No baggage on lite fares
Cairns is a shithole to transit

          Qantas?
          Full service mainline carrier
          A330s and B789s
          All inclusive
          Transiting is easy

You cannot compare the two as if they are the same

        • +2

Singapore from Adelaide was never this expensive. Its a result of flight cuts out of Adelaide especially by Qantas.

There's just not enough people in Adelaide to offer regular services anymore.

Having flown a lot via basically all of the major cities in Australia, direct flights to/from Adelaide were/are almost always very empty compared to Sydney / Melbourne.

Most of the cost of operating a plane are fixed vis-à-vis the number of passengers - if your plane is only 50% full, then the cost per passenger to operate is just twice as much.

FWIW, not a defense of Qantas - the Australian airline industry is notoriously uncompetitive and Qantas rort Australian consumers in the domestic market. International is better, at least there's a fair amount of competition.

          • +2

@p1 ama: Qantas did fly using A330-200s from Adelaide to Singapore. Until they posted a $2.8bn loss over a decade ago and they had to cut it.

If Qantas flew every single route like Hobart/Adelaide/Gold Coast/Cairns/Darwin to Singapore they would be bankrupt before 2000

          • +1

@p1 ama: You do get a much better service on Qantas domestic though compared to Qantas international. I quite like flying Qantas domestic (aside from the price most of the time) but international isn't a good service even in J. That's what happens when domestic has big margins and international has paper thin margins.

            • @CheapBrah: What about domestic J is better than international J?

              • @recession1: J class is the fare bucket term for business class.
                A/F = First
                J/C = Business
                Y = Economy

                • @AircraftFreight: Yeah I get that. I just don’t know how you could say domestic J is a better experience than international J.

                  • @recession1: I'm mainly talking about the level of service you get from the crew, the service you get is much better because the crew to passenger ratio is better. You actually feel like you're getting a J service on domestic. Obviously the seat and food isn't as good as international but thats because its a much shorter flight, plus you're better off eating in the lounge anyway and don't need to eat again on the flight. The service on Qantas international in J honestly feels like an economy service, the staff dont want to know you as they're too busy running up and down trying to complete the basics of the service, it's a struggle just to get some water. I never pay cash for Qantas J, but if I did I'd be pretty pissed off if I paid for international J in cash given the cost and poor service.

                    • @CheapBrah:

I'm mainly talking about the level of service you get from the crew, the service you get is much better because the crew to passenger ratio is better.

Most business flyers aren't paying for people to be nice to them, they're paying to expedite queues (because time spent in line is time not working), to get a more comfortable sleep (because time spent sleeping in the air is time not spent sleeping on the ground), and to have better food (because time spent eating in the air is time not spent eating on the ground), and to have a better place to work (because time spent working in the air is time for more work on the ground).

Qantas J is not targeted at casual flyers who want luxury (try F instead), it's first and foremost a practical service aimed at businesses to basically make sure their highly paid employees are more productive, or to make travel less of a bear when it's the 50th flight you've taken in the year.

Domestic J targets a very different market - no business is paying their employees to fly J on a MEL-SYD flight (I know of executives who are paid in the seven figures who fly Y), so their paying customer base is basically just rich people, much more similar to the group flying international F than international J.

                      • @p1 ama: There are more corporate travellers in domestic J than rich leisure travellers in my experience, but it's hard to tell who is on a cash fare because the target market to me seems to be to try sell a few seats on each flight at exorbitant prices and then dump the rest into the loyalty program. Seems 4/12 seats are reward seats on each 737, and then a few upgrades will get up as well, so probably at least half the J cabin on each 737 flight isn't paying cash to be there. Meanwhile it makes people think they got a good deal with their points when comparing to cash fare, but that's only because the cash fare is generally quite high and not worth it.

Also FYI at my work there is a decent chunk of people who fly domestic J, usually they're on 400k+ but like 10% of people working there are on that much. Granted this isn't normal, but there is still a small group at many big corporations who can fly domestic J.

                  • @recession1: I think its in comparison with the competition.
Qantas J on my runs to Perth is superior to VA J by a looong margin. I also find catering is superior than a lot of QF International catering, especially on those flagship transcons on the A332/B789.

Qantas Domestic Business lounges when I used to be in them were superior to all of the International J lounges across the network with the exception of Perth, London and maybe Brisbane.

International J for the most part is superior to Domestic J, but Dom J does have its pros to be honest.

                    • @AircraftFreight: Singapore international business lounge is good and better than the domestics, but it doesn't really matter since you can go to the Qatar lounge which is even better by a significant margin.

                      • @CheapBrah: The Qatar Premium Lounge is fantastic, always my go to.
The QF F Lounge is wayy to crowded during the 90min tech stop of QF1.

    any business class deals?

Just FYI, Qantas does not fly direct from Melbourne to Bangkok. You'll either be on an awkward connection through Sydney or be put on Jetstar flights if you insist on direct.

    • It's not that awkward, the bus between terminals can apparently have a line at times but Ive never had an issue and you can just take the shortest connection time option they have since there are endless Melb - Syd flights they can put you on if something goes wrong. Even having to clear immigration isn't that bad since you would have to do it in Melbourne otherwise, really only double up is that you go through domestic security in Melbourne. Also your not going off course much. Direct is obviously better but it's not the worst stop you could have.

  • +3

    If it's boeing, i ain't going

    • -3

Nothing wrong the with 787’s. Even the recent LATAM issue was most likely due to Clear Air Turbulence and passengers not wearing seatbelts as instructed than an issue with the aircraft.

    • Yea brah, we going Fujian now.

  • Qantas apparently price match if you book direct but Ive never tried it as I barely ever pay cash for Qantas flights. Worth looking into.

  • +2

So much for flights going back to pre covid pricing, still too expensive.

  • +3

    Qantas, no thanks

  • Are the flights to Japan non stop?

    • Cairns - Jetstar
      Brisbane - Qantas, Jetstar
      Sydney - ANA, JAL, Qantas
      Melbourne - JAL, Qantas
      Perth - ANA

  • Bit annoyed, Brisbane to Tokyo was $1264 yesterday when i wanted to travel, 29th of Aug to 13th Sept. Now increased in price to $1394 return for same dates.

    • try checking in incognito browser mode

  • Wow Canberra to all those global cities is cheaper than the return direct flight to the furthest state capital, Perth. What a disgrace that flying directly within ones country costs more than going twice the distance overseas.
