8GB of RAM in 2024. Lol.

    • +8

      But its a Mac haha

    • +9

      TBF it's a 2020 model

      • +6

the 2024 model still has 8GB lol

    • Meme.

    • +5

The M1 Air is a very capable little machine, that RAM and SSD though are laughable.

      • Don’t forget these are ‘pro’ google docs users complaining how they absorbed 16gb

  • +19

I would have thought that the M1 would be cheaper now.

    • +10

I was expecting $999 clearance pricing considering Apple don’t even sell the model anymore and its design is very dated now.

      • Exactly! Why Apple so stubborn and still not willing to go below $999 yet

        • +2

Because it sells because of that logo.

          • +1

@Trishool: M1 chip is still impressive today regarding efficiency

            • @Zilch: It is, but it is also 3.5 years old (which is very old tech wise) so seems to be holding its price with minimal RAM and storage largely because of the brand behind it.

              • @Trishool: Arguably this counts for gaming but not so much for running MS Word. The base model M1 Pro 16” doesn’t lack for anything in ‘non pro’ performance.

              • @Trishool:

seems to be holding its price with minimal RAM and storage largely because of the brand behind it.

Because of the brand behind it?

Or because it's target audience consider it to be good value? For some people, a light weight, fan-less laptop without the windows bloat and no need to tweak around with Linux (and the battery life issues on laptops, hibernate, etc), is amazing for $1200 in 2024, even with only 8GB of RAM.

      • +1

My wife is very dated and she refuses to sit on the clearance rack.

    • +5

They are holding value like crazy. When the base M1 2020 outperforms even the big expensive 2019 Intels then it makes sense.

      • +9

The M1 chip sure is impressive. Shame about the ram and storage.

    • +1

My wife bought one of these brand new in 2020 for 1500 bucks not on special. Kinda surprising that I’ve than 3 years later, the big special JB offers is 300 bucks off.

  • +21

Base model still $1200-ish? I bought mine in Mar 2021 and cost me $1299 before any GC cashback. Not worth the price in 2024 IMO.

  • +19

Op was embarrassed by the price so they put 'e.g.' in front

  • +5

This seems so overpriced for a 2020 M1 model.

  • +7

So M1 Macbook Air is back to 2020 pricing. :/

    • +2

After inflation it's a still cheaper.

  • +6

False economy. Old form factor, 4 yr old chip

Price match Office Works? Gift cards? 💥

  • how about m3 pro

  • +3

Got JB to match the 5% Officeworks price beat off a macbook air m3.

    • Tried to 'ask for a deal' via JB live chat on the air 15 m3, they wouldnt move on price stating its already on sale.
How the heck did you get them to price match their own JB price with OW, then another 5% off lol?

      • I got lucky with the 2nd JB I called. Said I Will come in now 30 mins before closing

        • What did you say to them? and what was the final price?
I'm curious if I can try this tomorrow before Officeworks match or beat them by $1.

          • @ezza: just buy off the apple AOC store. it's cheaper anyway

            • @BigPeeper: I have JB giftcards I purchased some time ago for 15% off so I was looking to use them.
I was going to bite on the Edu deal + $240 Apple gift card which ended on 13/03 but then figured I'd still have these JB giftcards sitting around.

          • +3

@ezza: $1538 for mac air m3 8/256. Cheaper than AOC store.
I just said Officeworks have 5% price beat. I'm driving there now. Can you match? The guy said "not supposed to, but yes ok" 😂

  • +1

Decent machine of you're be just browsing the web or doing light productivity. This complements my desktop well.

3 years on, still got decent battery life and performance hasn't degraded.

If I was on a budget, I'd be looking at a 8th gen refurb. I also gave a Lenovo Yoga 380 running Ubuntu which I occasionally gets similar use.

    • +1

Same, M1 Pro (similar) from 2020 is still 100% battery health and great for random work from home, cafes, etc.

  • +1

I am so glad The Card Network Home includes Officeworks - this really sweetens the deal

    • +1

Officeworks will most likely match these prices by the morning.
I dont think the Card Network gift cards that have 20x EDR @ Woolies this week have Officeworks in them (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/836503)
Nor does next week's 20 x EDR gift cards (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/836049)
I'm assuming you have the TCN Home gift cards you've purchased previously, or I've completely missed something!

Careful of buying ‘old’ Macs. If your use case is as simple as streaming videos like me. Apple will still find a way to force you to upgrade after a while.

    • +8

they are talking about a 16 year old Mac

  • +1

Still looking at ~$2200+ if you want 16GB. Insane.

  • There's no way to add RAM or upgrade the hard drive for the iMac from jb hifi right?

I might have to buy from Apple. Do they price match jbhifi?

    • +1

I think you can do a custom via JB, but then you don't get this deal, as it says in the description that customs are excluded. I bought my custom MacBook Air M1 with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD from AOC for about $1635 delivered 3 months ago. Only got those upgrades as my son needed it for animation and Blender 3D, otherwise I would have just gone with the base model which was around $1350 at the time I think.

      • I might have to decide if it's worth the upgrade then and not getting the 10% off.

I want to upgrade to 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD hard drive, and get the keyboard with numerical pad. That's $3,739 compared to $2,519 from jb for 8GB RAM, 512GB HD, keyboard without numerical keypad.

Essentially I'm losing the $280 savings, but need to pay for the upgrades and get the computer I want.

        • +1

You might have to decide to check the Apple education store and check the price on a m3 air with 24gb or RAM and 1TB SSD.

        • +1

Apple price match up to 10% and as as others have said there’s also AOC

      • That's crazy because I bought my macbook air M1 with the same specs in 2021 and paid the same amount as you.

  • -2

Hate to say this as android user, but Apple is king in retail, they deserve for their quality on hardware and software as they always get basics right.

    • +1

Basics like how much RAM their laptops come with?

      • -4

Trust me, this will be faster than a 16gb windows laptop.

        • +2

          That really depends.

For me, I don't need the extra ram. The system feels better than an old 2018 MBP for basic use.

If you have a task that actually needs 8gb+ of ram or you're a heavy multitasker or have 200+ Chrome tabs open, you'll realise pretty quickly.

        • +2

That's not true. The main problem is people are not comparing equivalent laptops (though it is not easy because most of us keep our laptops for years). Also, you can see a growing trend of youTubers recommending 16GB RAM on Macbooks nowadays.

If you really do work that require a bit of RAM. Even 16GB is not enough on a Macbook Pro. I have a Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM, and it is simply not enough for me. When the Macbook Pro is running out of memory (using a lot of virtual memory), it is very noticeable and quite unbearable. I have to close applications.

          • @netsurfer:

see a growing trend of youTubers recommending 16GB RAM on Macbooks nowadays

Oh well if someone on Youtube says it must be true… There's no way they're getting paid for their comments, no siree…

If you really do work that require a bit of RAM.

            Which is not most people…

The PC I am writing this on is currently consuming 5.8GB of RAM with multiple browsers and tabs open. So why would I pay for more than I need?
Even when I was doing 'heavy' stuff, I'd run it in a VM, so extra RAM required. In the age of cloud computing, there really is very little use case for high end laptops hence why MBA is a big seller. Yes there are some use cases, but they are the minority.

        • Trust me. Meme.

8gb m1 Mac mini is fine for most users.

          Eg. Xcode runs great.

Not sure why higher specs are required unless you are in an industry.

    • Intel got complacent and didn't bring much improvement to consumers for years. Meteor Lake is only available for mobile CPUs. While it is finally somewhat competitive in CPU performance, it still uses much more power consumption. Meteor Lake mobile CPU based laptops aren't cheap.

14th gen Intel desktop CPUs are still on the old Intel 7 tech. Intel is still playing catch up.

Android, I don't get why Qualcomm can't do what Apple's been doing. Sell / use older gen flagship mobile phone CPUs. Why insist on making new mid and low end mobile CPUs with bits and pieces still crippled?

$1153.30 at OW with price match.

I had an m1 up to November when I upgraded to M2 15” with 16/512gb. I don’t notice a lot of difference besides the screen size. I use mostly for surfing, PowerPoints, word, videos, emails. My teen is now using the m1 and she possibly makes it work harder by playing games. Still working extremely well. Apple is expensive but their products are often excellent.

  • +1

I remember when this m1 dropped to 900 when the m2 came out, I didn’t buy it I went for an intel nuc m15 for $1030 instead. Benefits was its a bigger screen but man I shoulda went for m1. Not only is it fanless and does not overheat but it also is super fast and better battery life. I hate the fan noise on the nuc and honestly I can count on two hands the number of times ive used the laptop I’m mostly on desktop. How the hell did it go up in price after 1.5 years tf.. I’m talkin 2022 dec deal $900

The Nuc m15 is the closest thing to a windows version of a MacBook and that’s why I got it, I love the Apple hardware but hate Mac OS, Surprisingly the Nuc m15 is like 1300 dollars now, I wonder if I can sell mine for 1000

    • +1

It is the Apple Silicon CPU you really want. Apple is smart to use laptop screens that have glass like finish, instead of matte finish. You won't like the lack of RAM or the rather small SSD.

You get desktop like performance with Apple Silicon CPU (especially if you don't do tasks that need heavy multi-cores). Mac OS does take a bit of getting used to for Windows users initially.

    • Dropped to $900?

      Too good to be true.

    • +2

Exactly the reason for my Macbook Air M1 purchase three years ago while I was cross shopping with Thinkpads x1 carbons etc. I did not even consider the Macbook pro version due to the fan. The battery life was (and still is) better than any of my previous Windows Laptop and is great for day to day tasks. Took me a while to get used to Mac OS. The fanless but high end performance is great.

Few months ago I bought the M1 mini as well and that has been great as well (mainly due to the quite processing). Just turned on my Thinkpad x1 after three year just now and while I instantly loved the keyboard, I did not enjoy the noisy fan and the heat blowing on my lap.

Still, this deal is way too expensive for a two gen old processor with basic specs.

      • +1

yeh no at this price you might as well spend 300 dollar more at get the m3, from the education store deal posted few days ago, i wonder if i can sell my current nuc and the old macbook air (pristine condition) but does not turn on, and same for a 5th gen ipad (pristine does not turn on) and get a m3. its just such a hassle to sell them on ebay and deal with charge backs if any..

the m1, bestbuy has it for 650 dollars us, so it really should not be more than 1k here, 650usd is 980 aud.
        https://www.bestbuy.com/site/macbook-air-13-3-laptop-apple-m…

  • Costco has m3 version which is also 10% discount, I don't see why people want to get such old version with nearly same spec by paying a few hundreds more.

    m3 - https://www.costco.com.au/Computers/Laptops/Apple-MacBooks/M…

    m2 - https://www.costco.com.au/Computers/Laptops/Apple-MacBooks/M… ($1,499.99)

    • +2

I think these pricings are the reason why the m1 air ought to be sub $1000.

  • may as well get the m3 version for a few hundred more.

  • +1

Not really a deal. Bought Mac M1 in 2021 for $1247. Also, bought Mac M1 from Officeworks for $497 which is perfect for desktop/WFH/Uni work Macbook companion for the times I need to get the work done - which I think was good value especially with Apple Ecosystem compatibilities. $1247 was also the original RRP for the base Macbook if I recall correctly but was a bit hard to get due to lockdowns and demand at the time.

  • +1

Did a price beat at Officeworks over the phone for 14” MBP M3 pro.
Now to find some discounted gift cards and do the old return repurchase manoeuvre.

    • Didn't they ask for payment straight away with OW?

      • Yes. Paid over phone. Hence the return in store and repurchase when/if I get some discounted cards.

If you have gift cards in hand and your local is out of stock… Apparently you can go in store, they will price match and order from warehouse, pay on the spot. I’m skeptical, but this is what I was told from the lady on the phone when I purchased.

        • Ughhh that sounds painful! But prob worth the hassle I suppose.

        • +2

this is how one price-beats iphones :)

    • +1

Went to OW last weekend and was told that they have a new policy now of maximum 3 gift cards per transaction, so the staff asked the manager if I could use 6x$50 which he agreed and did the check out himself

  • Got a 16GB one of these recently from work. At first I was a bit miffed that I was given the 'old' model but the capability of this 4 year old machine really blows me away. It performs much better than the 32GB RAM equipped 13th Gen Intel laptop I initially received from work, has much better battery life and most importantly is totally silent!
Haven't used an 8GB RAM version but if my experience is any indication at the very least for light tasks this machine I expect would be fantastic.

    • Work gave you a Macbook Air M1 16GB RAM? Work didn't give you a Macbook Pro M1 16GB RAM? It's a bit unusual for a workplace to order custom spec Macs.

      • Not really, as far as I know they order it direct from Apple and they order them in batches, given I had to wait a few weeks for mine.

  • +1

m1 8G is more than enough for most people…

  • Alot of complaints regarding price, but these are good machines.

    • Yeah, and may have small ram, but what it gets done on its battery is unbelievable. Far less heat output under load than any x86 I’ve come across. For a laptop that’s gotta be important?

Though this also makes any cool running, aluminium chassis, M chip equipped Apple laptop a bit dicey in winter if you put it on your legs while wearing shorts. Brrrr!

      • Funny story: I noticed that my battery was starting to drop a little faster than usual one evening, thought maybe the battery was aging. But then I remembered that over the last week it felt more like room temp than the usual cool to the touch you’d expect from metal. Didn’t think much of that, but now days later I’m noticing reduced battery life. Put it together, looked at activity monitor and saw why, some software had bugged out (Notes) and a cpu core had been 100% , I guess for several days haha

        • M1 air here, the Notes app always freeze after a while if left open through sessions, ie closing the lid. It’s a bug that drives me crazy as I need to force quit the app all the time

  • +1

Bought a 1 week old m2 base model macbook air on marketplace for $850 which i thought was an absolute steal. I see the m2 on marketplace avging around 1.2k can probably negotiate a little less as well. I feel theres better value buying second hand if you can get one close to brand new.

  • This Macbook Pro 14 M3 1TB seems like a good deal from Retravision

  • I have one for sale $950 - I have listed it on the Classifieds
