"Experience Luc Besson’s 1997 sci-fi classic in stunning 4K. New York, the twenty-third century. The Earth is about to be destroyed by a huge ball of fire racing toward the planet. Cornelius, an old monk, knows how to stop the burning sphere: the Fifth Element, the Supreme Being, who unites the four basic Elements — air, water, fire and earth — must be summoned for it is the only being who can stop Evil. Cornelius, with help from Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) a taxi driver and former secret agent, and Leeloo (Mila Jovovich) an alien in the shape of a beautiful, orange haired woman, set off on a myriad of adventures in an attempt to save humanity and fight the horrendous Zorg (Gary Oldman)."

    My kinda deal

  • If this is the Studio Canal version as per the listing photo, it's the best remastered version.

    • +1

I believe I have the other version. What is the difference?

      • -6

Oh there's way more than just two masters of this. You have one of the other ones.

    • Its crisper, but duller contrast right?

  • +17

    Leeloo Dallas Multi-pass

  • +13

    Gimmie the Cassssh!

    • haha f'n love that guy!
for some reason I disliked him when I was a kid

      • +4

Maybe you just didn’t like his hat.

    • +1

      That's a very nice hat.

  • +9

Negative I am a meat popsicle

    • +1

Milla Jovovich can have my meat popsicle.

  • +1

    Multi pass!

    Green?

    • +11

It's a bit like ghostbusters. It's an offbeat scifi comedy grounded in a real world. And prime Bruce Willis.

The director was so sure he was making something super special that he swore everyone involve to secrecy about the specifics of the film. And he was kinda right, it's a pretty cool movie.

      • +1

For me the secrecy was part of the problem - based on the trailers I went in expecting gritty noir sci-fi but was very annoyed when it was more Hudson Hawk than Blade Runner. I’ve come to like it more in retrospect.

      • This movie and Total Recall (1990) hits the spot.

        • watched pulp fiction the other day.. classics
The BRD version looked better than what i remembered too.

    • +4

Sux to be you, I loved this movie growing up.

    • That's a shame, I remember watching this for the first time as a kid and was blown away.

Everything was futuristic and it actually looked real! It has also aged great for a film created in the 90s.

  • Here we go again

  • This movie was good for its time

    • +7

Now must also be its time.

    • +6

good, because this movie is timeless

  • shut-up and take my money, I mean, chicken good

  • +3

    Big bada boom

  • +7

    Streaming free on SBS.

    • And playing on TV for 6-7 hours straight at least once a year…
Still tempted to get a hard copy of the 4K cut though.

  • Korben Dallasssssssssssssss

  • +3

Another disc to be watched maybe once and then put on the shelf to gather dust never to be seen again… ;)

  • This comment does a semi decent job at explaining the variables between transfers: https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/comments/18x5ofv/comment/k…

TL;DR: Studio Canal release purportedly closer to original print, but the some people prefer the So y one. Newer scans tend to be better than older ones for most movies.

    • Any idea which scan MadMan Entertainment version was?

      • +1

The Madman version that was released here is the Sony transfer.

    • So the best version is debateable?
4k for this price sounds good.

Will have to watch this again, classic. Stremio has various 2160p versions, no doubt will look great still.

  • Great movie, but it wasn’t shot in 4K in 1997 I don’t think. Yeah yeah, digital remastering, upscaling and filtering, yadda yadda. Doesn’t make it as good as a 4K shot film. Nice to see that it’s about 40% the cost of John Wick 1-4 Box Set in that other deal happening now (about $68). Good indication of the entertainment value of the movie.

    • Yeah i think it's too old for 4k to be as crisp and immersive as modern films,
Sampling a few blu-rays (2160p TrueHD remux ~76GB) and still seems grainy on my 2k monitor.

ps. anyone know if the older BD burners can read 4k, circa 2014 (Pioneer BDR-206). Couldn't find much, maybe not?

    • +5

Fifth element was shot on 35mm film which retains a lot of detail but has more grain, also depends on other factors like lighting, lenses etc.
Many older films scanned and remastered for 4k look amazing, Jaws, Alien/Aliens.

Many Fifth Element scans happened in 2010 for bluray but this version was scanned in 2020, however still limited to the capability of the scan/film.

      • yeah I assumed that was the look they were going for. It would be cool to see it - someone I know may already have it and said they can rip in UHD now.
May have to watch it in the meantime.

I'm still impressed with the Stemio setup, google TV seems to upscale very well too. That Halo series is a visual feast, super crisp and awesome sound too (or a modern comparison, but pretty CGI heavy).

      • Watched a 4k BTTF, must be similar but seemed pretty good. They can only remaster so much, the sound was pretty crisp but the surround presence was non-existent almost.
        (89GB)

    Smoke you!!!

  • +1

    I've been waiting for this.

  • This was a great movie, it needed a sequel or something the universe and lore was pretty awesome

    • +1

No sequels, no remakes please. This movie is perfect on its own.

  • +4

    Aziz LiiiiiiiiiiiiiiGHT!

  • +1

Grandfather says, it never rains every day. This is good news!

  • Best comic book movie adaptation ever (even though it wasn't based on a comic book haha). Wish I had prime to nab this with free shipping.

    • +4

Yeah it's weird how people prefer the superior technology.

      • I am confused - you are referring to blurays as the superior technology? You can get bluray quality versions of just about anything electronically (and for free if you so want). Playing something from a file hosted on something like Plex is a lot easier these days than using a bluray disc and player. I pretty much just got the file versions of all my blurays and haven't used the discs since.

        • I pretty much just got the file versions of all my blurays and haven't used the discs since.

So you would have had the disc in the first place (unless you are talking about pirating).

I think people are implying that the full bluray quality is better than most streaming platforms offer (it can become compressed if you get buffering).

    • I'm sure it is worthwhile for those with good eyesight. Unfortunately, was wasted on me. Just as blueray arrived, my vision went in the opposite direction.
An investment in a pair of cheapy shop glasses however paid off handsomly!

  • Seems to be $41 now.

    • You can't snooze on these deals for too long.

  • Just arrived this morning, cannot wait to rewatch after fettling my home theatre in the last few weeks.

    • How did it go?

      • +1

Not gone yet,… "cannot wait" has become "will have to wait" as room is a mess and nobody but me interested in watching it!
