Battlefield 1942 for Free. 10 Year Anniversary

2930

Celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the Battlefield series they are giving us arguably the best of the series for free. Battlefield 1942! Even after 10 year the game is still widely played online and with mods.

Even though the page is the demo page it was the only way I could find it get access to the full game.
From what I can see this does not include the expansions. Origin client IS required.

Click "Get now". It will ask to launch origin. Do so or create an account if you have not done so before.
Login, start the installation and away you go.

Not bad for a first submit I think ;)

i remember trying to get a pc that plays this half decent…and the loading was so pretty long even on a fast pc

    • +6

i tried to run this on a TNT2 m64 with 32mb of memory on P3

      • +1

I had that card! Damn thing wouldnt work :D It was lacking T&L lol

        • -6

I might run this off my SSD just for the LOLs :)

        • +6

          Yes….big belly laughs

        • yeh i literally borrowed my friend's geforce 1(GF256) just for that damn T&L feature, later there was patch for the TNT2s to fix this, thats some memories, mainly cause i wanted to play this so bad back then.

      • +1

OMG I had that card too :) Brings back memories

      • But then I got my Sparkle FX5200

    • +8

The desert Combat mod for this game would be the best game ever made that supports 64 players!!!!! :)
and yes in some maps you get close to 40+Tank/APC WARS.. or 40+ Jet fighters/Choppers

To watch 40 Jets in the sky fight it out really is something,,,, Even to this day we don't have anything close to that game play its so sad!

      • +1

I miss that no fly zone map

  • Ahh memories. Downloading, thanks OP.

  • +1

Are there still local aus servers running?

  • Tank jumping. That is all :p

  • +8

Geez, ten years. Time does fly.

  • Thanks, just another battlefield to my collection

  • +1

Yes indeed its a good first post, cheers mate.

Just a note from FAQ (http://blogs.battlefield.com/2012/11/download-bf1942-for-fre…)

Q: Can I play online against players who have the original disc-based version?
A: Unfortunately, no. This Origin digital download version can only be played against other players who are using the same version. But since it’s free for everyone, everyone can download their own copy of the game. This version of the game will only show applicable (new) servers in the server browser.

    • +2

This is a bit odd as EA mentioned no tweaking. If people are still playing MP after all these years (no, really) then i'm sure they could do with some company.

Otherwise at least you know your enemy is an ozbargain member which should make it all the more satisfying.

    • +3

      How strange.

  • +6

Yesss, the more exposure this gets to Aussies the better.

BF1942 got me into PC gaming, timeless classic.

  • Excellent, thanks OP.

  • OzBargainers Gather! haha downloading now :)

  • bbl, time to go stand on some wings…

  • +5

Someone should host an OzBargain server with one of those HP microserver deals.

  • +64

Damn, paid $100 for this game ,,, on release day, should have waited!

    • +2

I got it for $50 2 years after the release.
Still haven't installed it. Too many other backload of bargain games thanks to Steam.

  • +2

Wow that takes me back. Time to dust of the clan tags |LAB|

    • +4

Oh |LAB|… I didn't play a lot of 42', but I played a lot of BFV. |LAB|Booth was an infamous base camper and all round pain in the arse haha. |LAB| was also the team that knocked my clan out of the semi finals of gamearena back when I was in aK`, using some crazy strat of flying the mig17 out of NVA's base with almost their whole team standing on the wings. Good times.

      • +1

i too remember that salty dog Booth, and aK were good, damn good. fun times. And you Pry were always a PIA. Nice you still have the same handle.

      • +1

I didnt play much 42, but played quite a lot of BFV late in the cycle. By God, the helicopters were dominant in BFV. When you were getting base raped by one or two choppers, there was no option but to die and die again until someone managed to hit them with a LAW or something.

      • +1

I was in 6Pack, [-LT.] then finally ac. and I remember playing against Booth. That's absolutely hilarious.

  • +3

Absolute best game in the series closely followed by Vietnam. Spent so many hours playing this.

    Is there a direct link?

    • -1

To the person who negative voted. It is a legitimate query before I join as I do not wish to unnecessarily join to every service / posted bargain out there!

      • I'm not sure what you mean by direct link, since the link is pretty direct already… If you mean can you download the game without having to use Origin, then the answer is no.

        • -1

Thankyou for your response. I had a "Download Error
There was a problem initiating your download. Please try again later." message. Was trying to see if I could get it without Origin however doesn't look like it so will try again later.

        • Haha there is probably not much point in trying later - it will always require Origin.

EDIT: Sorry, misread your post. Continue!

    • Open the origin client mangew and click on the demos tab. voila.

      • Thankyou. I clicked on "Get it now" which asked me to login. Then had a "Download Error
There was a problem initiating your download. Please try again later." message.

  • +10

    FYI folks it's a 1.2GB download.

    • +6

That would be a lot…if it was 2002.

      • +9

Don't worry, I've still got a 56k modem in the shed that's up to the task! ;)

        • +1

56K? how'd you manage that. Still on a 14K here.

    • +3

      There goes my monthly allowance

      • -4

        Said nobody ever

        • That would have cost me $1200 back in the day!

  • +1

Time to parachute off the B52 wing again.

  • +4

BF 1942 is right up there with Return to Castle Wolfenstein for my money as best games EVAH! :D

    • +1

rtcw and rtcw:et took up so much of my time but bf42 and bfv won out purely for the vehicles :)

      • Agreed. The vehicle interactivity really was…if you'll pardon the pun…a game changer! :)

        • How about the original COD? That game was amazing until they nerfed all the guns and added recoil. Same thing happened to DoD - I always preferred WW2 guns that shot like rail guns - even if it wasn't realistic :)

        • Compared to modern infantry weapons, many WW1 & WW2 weapons were like railguns.

          The venerable .303 LE, 30-06 Springfield & K98 7.92×57mm Mauser packed a wallop that .223 & .308 just don't get close to! :)

  • This is great thanks :)
I remember playing this when I was a kid, I loved it haha!

  • +1

I can't believe that I am going to play Battlefield 1942 10 years after. Love this game! Thanks OP!

  • Thanks, this will go nicely with my free copies of BF2 and BF:BC2 that I got when Origin had a glitch in their store for 10 free games :)

On my way to getting the complete Battlefield collection for free :D

  • +2

Also, FYI, if you don't want to have to download it again in the future, Origin has an option to keep the installation files after the game has been installed.

  • does anyone actually buy games on origin :P

    • no with all the free games we get. =P

  • -1

    Work on Mac??

    • +1

Not sure why you're getting downvoted since its a legitimate question.
There is a 1942 mac port but I don't think this will work since there isn't an Origin client for Mac (yet)

      • +2

Not sure why you're getting downvoted

        Mac. That is all.

        • -8

HURHURHURR MAC SUX RITE GUYS? RITE?

  • Wow best game ever… I am not in to gaming much but this game almost costed me my marriage…

    Heehee.

    • +2

      DA DA-BA DUM DUM

      • +1

I'm a bit tone deaf, is Darth Vader coming or something??? :p

  • THANK YOU!!

  • +6

Just a heads up for those unaware of Origin (EA's software platform)…

    You gotta sign up, then
    Initial setup file = 15Mb
Update to this setup file = 45mb

Then the game itself = 1.2Gb.

A bit of stuffing about for those who havent done it before, but plus vote for awesome free game!

  • +2

Awesome. Wish they'd put Codename Eagle on Origin though. Still the best!

  • +4
  • Noice! got it.

  • Can anyone give me some tips on how to get multiplayer working? :)

    • +5

stand virtually naked in a big field and wave to any planes that fly past ; )

      • -1

        thanks, helpful -_-

  • awesome! this was the first and only BF i played :P

  • +2

I still remember the first time I played this at an internet cafe…
Playing LAN and seeing who the person I killed was by the looks on their faces or them leaning back.
Even made a small rivalry then friendship with the person sitting directly across me. Good times…

  • +4

    MOST EPIC THEME SONG EVER!!

  • Does this allow you to play online? I took a glance at it and tried to activate punkbuster but it says I have to get the latest version which I should have from BF3.

edit: nevermind, I pressed 'Update' on one of the options and it worked.

  • Thanks

  • love the game! but its very unplayable with my current comp. anyone managed to find a server??

  • Does this mean that it's free for good now or just for a limited time?

    • For good.

      • +3

Nah it's a limited time. Found out from this page which says that it's free until March 1, 2013.

THIS OFFER IS BEING ISSUED TO YOU FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A CREDIT, CHARGE, DEBIT OR GIFT CARD. FREE DOWNLOAD EXPIRES MARCH 1, 2013. REQUIRES ORIGIN ACCOUNT, BLAH BLAH BLAH…

Knowing EA, they will probably shut down the game servers by that time anyway.

  • wow! so much free games! enough to keep me entertained after the exams!

  • great deal! thanks!!

  • Not sure if it's worth installing the ridiculous Origin application distribution program just to download a 10yo game that I will probably never play. This is obviously a ploy by EA to get idiots set up an account and install their app.

    • +4

      Origin isn't actually that bad.

  • What's the situation with online servers and players?, is it compatible with the desert strike mod?.

  • when I try to join a server it says 'invalid cd key' wtf?

    • yeh im getting that also, makes no sense!

  • Origin Username: Bibendum73au

Having an issue with the Punkbuster option. Asks to update to the latest patch?

  • +1

the name speaks for itself because the graphics sure look like 1942

    • +8

      90s kid alert!

  • Wish there was a code for FIFA10, as I missed out on the last one. Any suggestions?

    • edit: nvm

  • So whats the situation with playing online….can you and are they many servers and players?

    • There are a few servers dishing up 64 player goodness. Well worth it if you're keen.

To others messing around with Punkbuster, don't. Leave it unchecked in the multiplayer browser, you don't need it to play online (PB is rubbish anyway).

For anyone getting the invalid CD key error, I have a link I can send you for a fix, if needed just reply to this.
