Also 5700X3D for $364.37 - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/176216573307 (slightly cheaper than other places - most are $379).

    • +1

That's not too bad. Metrocom were selling the tray version for $349 at launch, so $15 more gets you a bunch of plastic and a box.

    • 5700X wattage is 65w, while 5700X3D is 105w.

On light workloads, can the 5700X3D be run efficiently to save on power costs?

      • If you're anal about power then you could look at the slower 5500/5700 or go Intel. They should use 10-20W less power at light workloads.

      • +6

That's the maximum wattage. I have numbers for the 5600X and the 5800X3D. At idle they're basically the same (61W vs 59W), with 1 core loaded up they're still the same (111W vs 110W), but in a multi-core test running full blast the difference appears (154W vs 193W).

That's usually how it works, the power draw stays very similar until the slower system hits its limits, then the faster system can draw more power when it's in a situation where it can get more work done.

If you're just watching youtube, the power consumption should be the same because the systems are doing the same amount of work. If you're gaming and the X3D is giving you better frame rates, then it will draw more power.

If you're trying to build something with low power consumption as a priority, you really need to choose hardware designed for that purpose (like laptop chips).

        • There’s an argument that more powerful chipsets can actually use less power vs throttled low voltage chips. If idle consumption is basically the same between the low wattage and high wattage versions, the higher wattage version draws a bit more power doing tasks but can do the tasks quicker and return to idle wattage faster and therefore have lower overall power consumption.

Low wattage chips are for environments where heat is an issue (i.e. laptop chassis) rather than delivering lower overall power consumption

On lighter workload, due to the slightly lower clock speed, the X3D CPUs are likely to use less power. However, for applications where L3 cache isn't important (i.e. quite a few general applications), you will find X3D CPUs perform slightly worse due to lower clock speed:

Cinebench Multi-core performance - 5700X beats the 5700/5800X3D variants. However, obviously for gaming, the X3D CPUs are much faster.

  • Would this be a worthwhile upgrade over the 3600 and fit into a B450M board?

    • +3

      At this price, absolutely.

    • considering that the used market value of 3600 is something like $120 now (wtf), it's a good deal.

      • +1

I get your point still but I've been tracking fb marketplace, a 3600 is selling for more like $90.

        • +2

Really? Might be time to part with the mint condition 3500X I’ve been sitting on since before Covid. Maybe it’s appreciated enough to finally let it go…

    • i did this upgrade awhile back and have been happy, while i did not see a huge increase in FPS in most cases, everything runs so smooth now, where sometimes on the 3600 i would get stuttering

    • Based on this benchmark, even with a 5700X3D, there is not a big difference in gaming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqNXGL-cqZw

    • -2

Not really no, unless you desperately need 2 extra cores. At this point in time, the best upgrade for AM4 is either a 5600 (for Zen 1/1+ systems on a budget), or a X3D (for CPU bottlenecked games). Else, the 3600 is still perfectly serviceable, especially at higher resolution

      • As an owner of a 3600, i can assure you it is absolutely no longer able to get even a solid 60fps on a lot of recent games.
Try running Darktide, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, Tarkov, etc.

        • Tarkov is uniquely CPU bound and Starfield is an unoptimized piece of shit, Hogwart as well. 1080p put more pressure on the CPU, and Zen 2 always had some latency issue, but its not bad to the point where upgrading to base Zen 3 is immediately going to fix all of your issues, you'd get significantly more value from a GPU upgrade. My 5600 was barely sitting on 15-20% CPU usage at 1080p on Hogwart Legacy with a 6700XT on launch, and it was still running like shit. A 5700X has similar in-game performance as a 5600, and a 3600 is sitting at around ~80% of a 5600 on average. If a 3600 is struggling to get 60fps stable at whatever resolution + setting combo you're running at with your GPU, a 5700X is going to at best barely push you across the line.

If there's any miracle cure CPU, it'd be the X3D due to how the large L3 cache makes up for poor optimization, but even then it varies from games to games. On EFT? Absolutely. On crappy console port AAAslops? Usually not so much

    team,

    I come from a i7 2600k.
Yes that is 13 year old tech.

Now is this a big leap? Worth my time sort of upgrade? haha
Ive just been playing Hell Divers with a 3080ti. Big time bottle neck. Bit of a noob on PC specs these days but a mate recommended this CPU.
Just wanted some thoughts on how big the leap would be.

    Cheers!

    • +3

Yes, but not to this product, since you’d need new ram and motherboard as well, at a minimum.

This is a great product for someone already using the AM4 platform.

      • -1

yaaap Ill be upgrading the motherboard and RAM too!

Yeah my CPU is my biggest bottleneck so I think I might pull the trigger. haha

        • +2

          I'm not usually a prebuilt kinda-guy, but why not this AM5 7500F + 4060 build for $799.

5700x + minimum decent VRM board + 32GB used 3200Mhz ram would run you about $500 already, and you'll almost have hit a dead end in the AM4 platform.

        • +7

I think the point is, this series of AM4 boards and CPU are pretty much over.
If you're buying everything new, check what you can get on AM5 or whateverf the latest Intel are offering.
I wouldnt base your whole new rig on this one slighly cheap CPU

  • 7800X3D For $581 (Not bad).

  • +1

I would say the 5600 is a decent price too at 187 after coupon

  • +3

Simiar price last yr. This cpu is great

  • +1

Wow…. That's a good price for a very good CPU for budget gamers

  • Might be time to update the r5 2600.

    • I just got one to replace a 2600. Hopefully I see some good gains from it.

  • +1

It's not ATL if you count cashback. I got it ~$210 early last year. I can't believe it's still priced the same a full year later, barely months away from another new generation.

    • 👌 I'm envious.

  • Does anyone have experience with this or the 5700x3d in helldivers 2? I’ve got a 5600 currently and I feel like it dips too much when the action gets high around 48-55fps. Ive played at either 1080p or 4k on rtx4070tis and I feel both cases of CPU bottleneck.

  • Wonder how this compares to a 3800x. Wondering if I should upgrade it and sell the 3800x.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger. Upgrading from 3600. Now to google how to do it.

  • This is a good price but I need a deal on the 5700x3d.

    • Linked in first response for $364…

      • Is that a good price I'm not even sure I have been out of the upgrading game for a while.

But I think it would be a decent upgrade over my 3700x and a good partner for the rtx3080 for a couple more years.

        • I'm in same boat as you, just with 3800x. Last hurrah!

  • +1

Trying to find a 7800x3D for a mate has been really triggering as almost all of these ebay deals seem to have their price "adjusted" before the sale goes live..

$699 for a 7800x3D here with $105 off makes it $594, PCCG for example is $589 normally.

This should really be banned to be entirely honest, as it's not even a damn sale at this point.

    • +4

I'm guessing you haven't met Jack?

      • +3

        The name's Jack… Price Jack.

    • +1

Yeah, Computer Alliance are pretty bad for price jacking. The 5700X is $30 cheaper on their own website.

    • +1

I got one for ~$500 with the AfterPay code from Metrocom's eBay. Best shot for a cheap one is a OEM Tray Model either from Metrocom (if they restock on their site), or Aliexpress.

    • I'm in the same boat.

Could you please dm me if you find a good deal on the 7800X3D?

I saw one for $581 on ebay with this code.

Everyone is selling for $588 atm. Worth holding to see what else comes up.

    • @Matt86

      Cancel that, I found a new low(ish) for $575.

      Metrocom eBay

      • +1

        $571 here

      • I managed to get a 7950X3D for only $680 on facebook marketplace, works a dream.

        • Wow, now that's a right bargain!

How on earth did you manage that?
How long did you have to wait for a single component listing?

How did you check it was working fine before you bought it?
I'm so dubious about 2nd hand electronics.

          • +1

@lordra: I just searched on Facebook marketplace and talked him down. It works great.

            • @hamwhisperer: How did you check that it was working?
Did he give you an invoice from his original retailer for warranty claims?
