BIKE_50

Edit: @peter05 posted a similar code in the comments that gets you a year for $10 BA10_GO valid until 21/05

Roadside assistance for cyclists. Deal was advertised to me via FB Ad. They run a promo like this a couple times a year.

Inclusions:

  • RACV Member Benefits
  • 24/7 Assistance
  • 8 call-outs a year, Victoria wide
  • Explicitly approved reasons for call-outs include: Flats, Bad Weather and Rider Fatigue. Presumably also includes non tyre related mechanical failures, don’t quote me on that.
  • Taxi for both you and bike up to $50 value per callout

I wouldn’t buy this for $47 but for half price I think it’s pretty good value. Can probably make your money back with 2 call-outs.

You saying I can wear some Lycra to the pub, call up and say I'm tired and get 8 free taxis home for $23.50?
    Sign me up!

You dont have to wear lycra… Just bring a bike…

      • No one would believe that, Lycra is a necessity

        • Ha! But you still need to bring your bike to use the bike assist, thats non-negotiable…

Wearing Lycra or not, without your bike, you can use this

          • @meong: honestly the taxi drivers I don't think actually even check…..they barely even read the notes

            • @peter05: Based on my experience, i think you may be right…

Can I carry a clown cycle around with me at all times just in case?

    • +1

If you try to ride that clown cycle the muscle cramps would put you in the definition of "rider's fatigue".

I have commented yearly on these deals:

Don't call to get a mechanic to come and fix your flats! Just get a taxi either to home or at least to the nearest train station or back to your car.

I once tried to get a mechanic to fix my flats they only had a hand pump and didn't even have the tubes.

Ive been buying these on special for a few years, let them expire at the end then sign up again on the 50% off deals. I've never used it but I figure its worth $25 a year as a backup. I ride on carbon fibre wheels running tubeless so I wouldn't let an anonymous mechanic that's not used to working on carbon wheels anywhere near my bike but as an emergency lift home its worth it.

    • Maybe one day try calling them while you're riding tubular wheels and see them scratching their heads 😂

  • +1

Spend $10 on a tube, bring a small pump, fix your own flat. If you ride a bike, learning to fix a flat is essential and really easy even for non mechanically minded types.

    • My advice is literally the cheapest option, Oz bargainers

Don't forget the other scenarios such as fatigue, broken chain, snapped derailleurs.

I've used this during an outer suburb gravel ride in which was too hot, i had muscle cramps (lack of preparation, dehydration, etc). I pushed the bike all the way from the gravel tracks to the roadside and called for a taxi back to my car.

      • Fair point

  • Years ago I used this option in Tasmania, was a part of the ultimate road side assist.

And for all the comments about just fix it yourself, I used two spare tubes and tried a patch before making for help!

  • Has anyone ever used this for a flat? Any idea what average call-out time might be for metro Melbourne? Just makes me wonder if I wouldnt be better off walking to a bike repair shop. Probably better for more serious bike riders than just commuters to work?

      read my comment above: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15162269/redir

dont use the mechanic call out, use the taxi callout

if you can just get a lift with your bike all the way home then you can repair most of it yourself…

flats - $20 at bike shop, $10 tubes yourself
derailleur alignment - $40 at bike shop, $0 yourself (i once had to get my derailleur adjusted cause i didnt bring my tool with me)
tired - $5-$20 drinking and/or eating at the nearest coffee shop, $0 at home

      • And when you use the taxi call out, determine if you need the full cab as the booking fees for the larger taxis or disability taxis is $25+, eats massively into your $50 allowance.

Getting a smaller/standard taxi means you have to take wheels off or put seats down but you’ll get further for the call-out

        • Actually, no difference.

They are meant to get you a maxi taxi by default.

One time i was riding with my wife and we were able to fit both bikes (by taking front wheels off)

"Yes, we’ll arrange an appropriately sized vehicle that will fit your bike. Most of the time this will be a maxi taxi.

We’ll send a taxi to anywhere you’ve stopped riding in Victoria, and bring you and your bike to your chosen destination"

Use BA10_GO for $10 for the year

    • I just used this and every step of the way it said it was $10 a year including on the confirmation page, but I was charged $47….WTF

    • Thanks for this

    • Nice one, that worked.

Hey OP, I hope you enjoyed the Essendon vs Bulldogs game. Your fellow ozbargainer was behind you :)

    • Haha small world mate! Tbh I have zero interest in the footy and I was bored out of my mind, hence why I was on OZbargain for half of the game. I was only there cos my mate was selected to go down to the field quarter time to kick those goals to win crypto
