      Well, 20 incorrect guesses and the data can no longer be retrieved. However, erasing it is easy (and you don't need the old / correct pin code).

      It's USB 3.2 gen 1 (5Gbps) so most likely a SATA SSD.

          As I noted above, that is a 2 year old video though and Verbatm software since updated…..so at a guess that is fixed……one would hope.

          I had a look at the github page. Only 2 models are affected so are you sure this one is affected?

          Anyway, the dumb thing about this device is to reset it, step 1 is hold 1 & 2 and connect the device to an USB port. Then, press another button (read the manual to find out which one) and you are free to reset the pin and wipe the SSD.

          The 20 incorrect guesses is more about how basic / limited this device is.

            That's not the worst thing as people need a way to rest drives and it should make your data inaccessible.
            It's a consumer drive and not a business oriented high risk drive

            The 20 incorrect guesses is more about how basic / limited this device is

            I don't see that being basic / limited as it is stopping brute force attacks.
            Not having it would be basic and limited

              @spaceflight: A better approach would be a recovery password or recovery key. However, since it is numpad based, a quick workaround is used. Also, let the user decide how many tries before wiping the SSD.

              The owner needs to read the manual to find out: the default pin, how to change pin and how to reset it.

      One owner on Amazon indicated:

      • If the disk has been unlocked and then locked again with the LOCK button, it cannot be unlocked again. The USB cable must be disconnected and reconnected.
      • Automatic backups are not possible or meaningless, because the device must be unlocked and then the data is freely accessible.

      Clearance item, most stores probably only have 1 or 2 in stock. The item is gimmicky I reckon. Do you really want to enter the pin code every time you connect an external SSD to a PC or Mac? Furthermore, Centrecom had $5 for an NVMe 256GB SSD a few weeks back. This one is USB 3.0 (or USB 3.2 gen 1 if you preferred the new naming convention).

        Reported speed test result of the device from an Amazon customer comment.

        If you bought one of the $5 256GB NVMe SSDs from Centrecom a few weeks before and the cheap case Clear posted (less than $10 AUD), this would be the result:

        Anyway, hope you get yours. It's different to standard external SSD.

            @ExpressCoffee: It's relative. It is still faster than USB flash drives and if it is to copy data to / from a HDD, it is still faster.

            Also, I don't own this device so I am basing it on Amazon's user comments. Even the $3 el cheapo adapter I got from MSY (USB 3 to SATA) + BX500 250GB is faster than this. We probably should wait for OZBers receiving theirs. Hopefully, they are from a newer batch and much faster.

            It's only $19 so if you managed to get one, that's good. However, given the price, don't have really high expectation.

      There will be some challenges:

      • When the SSD is unlocked via the keypad buttons, does it remain unlocked? (because it needs to be, otherwise you cannot boot from it if it is completely encrypted).
      • It is likely a SATA SSD and hopefully not one of those where it is a single chipset with controller and USB controller in one.

      The chance of being able to completely bypass the pin encryption is low (otherwise it is a security vulnerability - just take the SSD out and it is completely accessible, doesn't even need an app to decode it, that seems unlikely).

      No issues using.
      I grabbed the update from Verbatim site Here.
      Updating: Unlock the drive, and run the downloaded "Keypad Security Update 1.0.0.6.exe". It does its thing finishes off with pop up saying MTPWin2 Download Success! then click OK.

      It says that it will delete the contents however it doesn't but still shows as updated. No idea how to actually check the onboard firmware/software installed on the device though so how does one know it has in fact updated especially as original files are still there AND no changes to set password. Mmmm!

      Update: My mistake, one has to unplug and then plug back in for update to complete.as per instructions. Data is deleted as one also has to Format the drive as part of the process.

      Reminder: If you want to keep original incl software etc, remember to copy it off the drive first. If you want the Verbatim Logo to show up when plugged in, copy back the autorun.inf and icon.ico to the root of drive.

      Drive works fine and a great buy for $19. If really worried about security, one could as easily also add a Cryptomator vault or the likes inside it for extra encryption. :-)

          Did you have any luck getting past this error? I'm having the same problem with my only drive. Tried it on multiple PCs and Windows 7, 10, 11.
          Did you get multiple drives and not all are affected?

            @LikelyMilo: Both mine are fine. No issues updating.
            - Unlock the drive before updating otherwise it will fail. Then run the "Keypad Security Update 1.0.0.6.exe" which shows it's progress and finishes..
            Where are you getting the error?

              @Borg: After I enter "continue" and proceed I get a loading window saying: "Scan bus for Initio External Storage Devices".
              Then after a couple seconds I get a message box saying "Enum Dev Fail". After I close the message box the updater closes.
              I get the same error from the Updater if I run it with the drive not connected at all, or I run the updater in a virtual machine.
              It would seem the updater can't find any compatible devices to update (i've checked and redownloaded the updater many times, I'm sure it's the correct one for my model #53402 1906-468)

              I've tried following the instructions carefully and doing it while unlocked.
              I've tried that many times on 3 computers from Windows 7-11. (Both USB 2 and USB 3 ports)
              I've also tried changing the pin and doing a full reset wipe multiple times. I've run CrystalDiskMark to check the drive functions as normal, and I've checked the SMART info which is also normal.
              I've tried swapping the cables out.
              Tried giving it different drive letters and no drive letter. Tried leaving it unformatted, and as NTFS and exFAT.
              The updater is not firewalled in case it needs internet, and I've tried it on machines with no antivirus to potentially interfere.
              Other than @DaTa, I’ve found posts by two other people mentioning this error. No solution was provided.
              According to Nirsoft USBDeview v3.07:
              The firmware revision is 1.05.
              The VendorID is ‘18a5’
              The ProductID is ‘0419’
              Serial number ends in F87
              Perhaps my device is some special version that was not accounted for by the updater.
              I’d appreciate if anyone who succeeded with updating could give me the info above so I can try and determine if my drive differs in how it identifies itself.

                @LikelyMilo: Mine is the same except Firmware revision 1.13. being updated verions I'd guess.

                The only other suggestions I can make if not already tested: Try on a different PC, Try via USB rather than USBC and ensure to run the update as "administrator"

                @LikelyMilo: I managed to get one to reset and update again, also found windows defender blocking the app used by the firmware updater, once that was allowed it tended to work one drive I think is a different model or controller and has never updated and shows the dev error. crystal disk shows it as a FORESEE 256GB SSD and a firmware version 4.3

                  @DaTa: Support got back to me after I provided them the serial and other drive information.
                  They basically said sorry but that's an older model manufactured too long ago, and it's not supported by the updater, bad luck. Guess some ‘old’ models were mixed into the stock and some people got unlucky.

                  It's got the same model number as the 'supported' model and their warning to update on the product page makes no mention that older models are worthless… So, it's poor behaviour to just ignore the older models and provide no information.
                  I don't know if they're lying about it not being supported, or they can't be bothered to try and fix the issue.

                  Since the advertised brute force/guess protection does not work (among other serious security issues), the main selling point of this drive is worthless.

                  The drive is still covered by the warranty and consumer guarantees, so you could probably return it to Centrecom if you’re persistent about it. However, since it’s a clearance item they’re probably just going to refund you instead of getting you a working drive.
                  Lucky it was so cheap so at least the storage is useful.

                  I hope someone who is good at harassing customer support has more luck than me.

    Mine works fine and updated firmware fine. CrystalDiskMark is showing me 278MB/s read and 348MB/s writes.
