Amanda Palmer 'Theatre Is Evil' - FREE Digital Album Download. SHE Wants You to Have It for FREE

500

Amanda Palmer wants you to have her music for free!! She is a firm believer of music being as free as possible and to prove it she's now giving her latest album 'Theatre is Evil' away for zilch, zip, nothing. Click on the link and read it for yourself! No strings attached.

A brief history of Amanda… she was the brains and the Piano behind the 'Punk Cabaret' act 'The Dresden Dolls' that blew many of our minds about 10 years ago but has since moved on to bigger & better things developing her solo career, working closely with Ben Folds and creating, touring & recording with the 'Grand Theft Orchestra'.

Born, bred & based in the US though she loves Australia and some of her previous work even includes tracks titled 'Vegemite' and 'Map of Tasmania' but please be aware that this music isn't for kids… it can be raw, edgy, heavy and vulgar at times but soft, fluffy & melodic at others. If you like the concept of a sexy Cabaret chick with graffiti for eyebrows, hairy armpits and a killer attitude smashing out tunes on her piano while belting out incredible lyrics at the top of her lungs at ear-bleeding levels then this is for YOU! If not then download it anyway, listen to it and pass it on to someone else who might like it.

I was lucky enough to see her live recently while OS and wow it was one of the best shows I've ever experienced. So professional but in a relaxed, grotty 'carnie' kinda way. She will be up near the top of my most played list for a very long time.

Please enjoy! I'm sure a lot of you wont but I'm also sure a lot will ;) Love her or hate her, she doesn't care nor do I ;)

    Good album.

JJJ giving "Do It with A Rockstar" high rotation atm, hilarious song, love it! Thanks for the heads-up OP.

    • Agreed, one of the few dozen tracks from my collection I've played so loud over & over again back to back that I managed to create that unmistakable odour of burning voice coils. Probably goes on my short list of 'songs I could go deaf to' Ahhhhh :)

      • -1

Burning voice coils probably means your amp is under powered for the volume you were playing it at. When an amp is pushed beyond its capabilities the wave form gets squared off at the top and bottom of the sine wave. This results in the coils overheating as the cones don't move in and out smoothly but stay in and out for a longer period where the wave form is squared off. Smooth movement corresponding with a normal sine wave normally cools the coils but staying still for part of the time on each in and out movement prevents proper cooling. Eventually you'll see smoke.

        • Nah, it's more likely the fact I'm pushing my sacrificial studio monitors too hard with my current dumping monoblocks… but thanks for the advice ;)

I think this model will be the future. If I remember correctly, when Nine Inch Nails tried it they actually made even more money than they would have at regular prices!

    • +3

      Not with ozbargainers though :P

    • Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead can afford to play the 'numbers game' due to the size of their existing fan base [one they have earned through not only great music - but also traditional marketing, media tie-ins and promotions, and million dollar stage shows]. They can bet on a percentage [however small] of these fans putting down money without even hearing the album. A new or non-mass-market artist doesn't have this luxury.

For example I havn't heard of this person before, I'm highly unlikely to pay to download and listen to this album (yes she has a pay what you want option) so I'll take the free download. Now my (and I'd say 'human') nature makes it even more unlikely that I will return to the site and pay for the digital version again [bonuses or not]. It would have to be really really good.

Personally I'm not a fan of pushing artists this way, though they are welcome to give away their work of course. It will just be sad to see music go the way of itunes apps where you question if its even worth a dollar.

It will just be sad to see music go the way of itunes apps where you question if its even worth a dollar.

why? an app can take 10 times the amount of time to produce. you can come up with a song in 15 mins.
it's all relative. and yes i think it should be $1. everything should cost $1.

  • +3

Thanks OP. Paid the $1 for the lossless version plus bonus tracks…. if it's good (or rather, if it appeals to me), then will come back to give more. Definitely like the concept, and think those who are willing to give it a go should be supported! I think of it as being more along the lines of 'shareware' - free (or low cost) to try, but pay if you actually use it.

  • thanks!

Amanda Palmer was the first artist to raise over a million dollars online via pledges for this album on kickstarter. Didn't cost her anything to record the album, as its funded via her existing fan base. She chooses to be independent to have full control over what she records and releases. You don't have to be popular to make a good income if you have a dedicated loyal fanbase. Most artist make no money from album sales anyways, it all comes down to touring.

    • and as yet no one has mentioned the scandal where, even with the million raised from kickstarter, she wanted her musicians on her tour to play 'for beer and high fives' instead of getting paid money.
      http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/09/14/amanda_palmer_play_f…

after the backlash she backed down and offered to pay them, but I think it was a token amount.

      • +2

        Not mentioned because it's pointless.

Those musicians were extras and played at the back of the stage behind Amanda and her professional musicians 'The Grand Theft Orchestra'. They joined hundreds of others for the chance & opportunity to play and knew they would not be paid before they applied! It was a 'for the love of it' type gig and is what Amanda is all about. It was their choice to apply.

Scandal? I don't think so HOWEVER I do think she was pushing the limits a tad and I'm glad she's now decided to give them a token amount for their appearances.

  • Must resist temptation

  • To save you the trouble of entering your email address, here's my link (not sure how long it will work for)

    • Nah, not working thanks anyway.

  • Oooh, hairy armpits. Reminds me of Nina Luftballoons fame

the psychology of it is really interesting.
I would pay for this album just because she's willing to give it for free.

    • For some people this would be the case. For me, it's more 'Without listening to it in advance, I am happy to pay a nominal amount for this album (less than the cost of a single track on iTunes, but enough to cover the royalties so the artist is not out of pocket… heck, think of it as tossing a $1 coin to a busker) to listen to it in full. If I enjoy it, and believe it's worth it, then will come back and give some more'

      • I use youtube to preview the album and then buy it if I like it.

After listening to it for half an hour, I'll pay for this :)

Thanks OP, you put me onto something I probably would've otherwise overlooked.

Awwww, chux ;) No worries… and if you end up REALLY liking her stuff please be sure to grab her older solo stuff and especially everything by the Dresden Dolls too OK. I'm sure you wont be disappointed. Oh and of course sign up to her newsletter and try to make it to one of her live shows as they're an amazing experience.

  • Small warning. Went lossless, and with the extra tracks it made for a 500Mb or so download. Download speed sucked bigtime last night…. left running and failed. Fired up again, only this time used 'down them all'. Great product, but mistake here in that it uses multiple connections (up to four) to improve speed & reliability of downloads. It also failed - but when I tried again I got the message: We're sorry, but the download limit on this file has been exceeded.. So now have sent support request to their helpdesk, which is manned Mon-Fri, 8am to 6pm PST. So might get a reply sometime next week….. sigh….

    • …and got an email today from the support desk, along with a time limited (as opposed to download attempt limited) link. 572Mb download worked fine this time!
