  • i know there are quite a lot of resin fanatics here on ozbargain - what are y'alls doing for safe ventilation and handling procedures for handling the whole process?

    • +2

so many more considerations to get into resin printing than FDM, add to the actual printer, the cure & wash setups, liquids & other chemical handling requires much more space.

I just run it in my kids room so I don't breathe the fumes

      • using their young lungs as the filtration system?

Relatively simple actually. For ventilation, isolate the room from the rest of your home when printing (ie. close door), open windows in the room and do not stay in there. After print, immediately pour excess resin back into bottle, remove print from platform, wipe down vat and platform with IPA wipe and paper towel. Best to cure all paper waste under the sun for several minutes before throwing into council bin, do not leave them in the room/home.

For cleaning, do 2 bath rinse - submerge into first IPA bath and agitate for a few minutes, take out and transfer to second IPA bath, agitate for few minutes. If you have auto cleaner, use it as second bath. Dry as much as possible before UV cure, either under the sun or use UV chamber. Remember to do all the above with proper mask on. Highly recommend ECO/Plant-based resin to reduce the awful smell.

After cure, remove support. Again, suggest to throw away support into council bin and not leaving any in the house.

I do want to caution everyone reading this that resin printing does generate quite a bit of waste, from used paper/wipes to dirty IPA. Furthermore, both Elegoo and Anycubic are bad at supporting their printers for longer than 1 or 2 years, I’m sure you will find it hard to get any spare parts to repair your printer when needed in the future.

      • If not Elegoo or Anycubic, what other brands would you recommend?

        • +1

Elegoo/Anycubic kept upgrading the board and LCD with newer models and stop selling the old spares almost immediately after EOL, even though LCD was categorized as consumable… I personally prefer FDM, parts last longer and spares are available for much longer time, also a cleaner option if you can live with the limitations.

If you must do resin, to be honest both Elegoo amd Anycubic are relatively cheap, you can just replace them when spares are no longer available. Professional brands like Stratasys or Formlab are supported for much longer time but comparable products cost 10 times more…

I run them in my garage!. also buy LOTS of disposable gloves.
I also use IPA and an ultrasonic bath to clean things…

Saturn 4 Ultra on pre-order for $619.00 …looks waaaaay better

    • must be why they're clearing out the 3

    • Is not having a heater in the Saturn 4 Ultra be a problem?

      • If your area has winter-like temperatures, a heater will be essential. In most Australian cities, you probably won't need a heater. However, if you can keep the resin temperature high (above 30°C), you can significantly reduce exposure time. Higher temperature resin will also yield better results with fewer failures.

    • Saturn 4 has a significantly reduced build area. Saturn 3 has 40mm more Z height, which is significant. While the 4 is better in some ways, it's not a huge improvement. I have been using the Saturn 3 Ultra, with over 100 liters of resin printed (still using the first LCD and first vat film), and I have pre-ordered the 4 as well. I think the Saturn 3 Ultra is one of the best. The 4 has auto-leveling (actually auto zero height), but for the Saturn 3, once you level it, it is permanent, so auto-leveling isn't that helpful. I print 1/4 statue a lot and most of them have long parts (like legs) and z height is critical for me. So even though I pre-ordered the 4, the 3 Ultra will be my main machine.

    • I've purchased the 4 Ultra. nigh on identical specs, but that tilt tray thingy should help keep pigments agitated, so it's a try from me!
      (upgrading from Mono-X 4K)
