Apple iPad with Retina Display (4th Gen) Wi-Fi 16GB at Target Online $474

820

Received an email from Target advertising 5% off Apple iPads excludes iPad mini and iPad 2.

Online website has the 4th gen iPad 16GB Wifi priced at $474, which is 12% off, valid only for one day - available for "click and collect" delivery only.

Apple store: $539
Officeworks: $497

I'm sure some of you might find it worth your while to TRY and get OW to do the 5% price-match thing, would bring it down to: $450.30

32GB Wifi
Target: $616
OW: $648. Price match + 5% off = $585.20
Apple store: $649

Hope that helps someone. :)

Won't work with Officeworks price match.
Because you can only order Ipad online not from individual stores.
And their customer service line is not open weekends so that you can't price beat over the phone.

    • +2

i don't see why not since this is target online, an online store, and OW PM online store prices. they'll probably refuse on grounds that "target returns policy is 14 days while ours is eternity and beyond" though

one thing i don't understand is how ipad 2 prices have actually gone up compared to a few months ago, before ipad 4 release.

      • the iPad 2 has small production volume now

      • +5

I rang up OW about this. The online store does not price match and the ipad can only be purchased online so there is no way they will match anyones price when it comes to ipads

  • I'm trying to decide between an iPad 4 and Nexus 10 for a relative.

I can get the iPad 4 @ $450 (with staff discount) vs. $489 for the Nexus 10.

    Thoughts/Recommendations?

      First world problems

      • +10

Did they say it was a problem. It is a decision and they are looking for ideas on how to make that decision. FFS what is with all you haters that throw out that trite phrase "first world problems"?

        • its funny?

Nobody is saying he shouldn't ask, though it isn't really adding to the discussion.

as to the question, depends on the relative.

closed eco-system but easy to use with lots of apps.

open eco-system with lots of apps and much more functionality, but not so basic (and some people struggle with things above a basic level ;) )

Personally I will never go back to Apple stuff, and for most of my family I try and steer them away too, simply because it makes it difficult to share content and use the device while travelling (family does a lot of travelling), but it would be a harder choice if it was for my nan.

          Agreed!

    • +7

if you're buying for a relative i'll bet ipad is a better choice. easier to use. no learning curve. more apps.

      • +4

and less "Son/Nephew can you help me with this device please" phone calls if you go the apple product

      • What makes the ipad easier to use? Apart from the apps are on the home screen, instead of an app drawer.

        • +2

everything is a lot simpler as easier to see. Android can get complicated for some people

        • +3

That seems to be the average customer's mindset, but still not sure what's so easy it about it.

If your able to go onto the app store, search, download, and use apps you would find using android very easy.

    • +5

Try them both and decide it yourself because specs or reviews on papers can't really justify the real user experience. Personally, I will get an ipad 4.

      • +2

As someone posting this comment for one, I agree. The thing is regarding the nexus vs iPad, is that iOs is so easy to use for non tech people, the App Store and all the apps work well and the battery life is good.

I've got both, nexus 10 32gb and an iPad 4

        • +1

ipad for the 'WOW YOU GOT ME AN IPAD' wow factor. Nexus for a practicality factor. i'll go with the ipad.

        • +4

The problem I've found with the nexus is that is almost no apps out that suit its native resolution, and most apps don't scale correctly. As time goes on it will only get better. That being said, the 4thngen iPad is in a similar boat with the a6x chip, as more apps come out that can make use of all that horsepower.

        • +3

is that iOs is so easy to use for non tech people

I'm really starting to hate this myth… you'd have to be an A-Grade idiot to not be able to navigate Android. iOS may have everything laid out for the user in the beginning (considering there's no App Drawer to have everything hidden away), but that doesn't mean the alternative is difficult to use.
It seems like people are just phobic of thinking these days.

My mother in law wanted to put her christian music on her iphone. I found it quite finicky and annoying to tell the truth - had to download itunes, then I had some issues with getting the thing recognised in xp. I imported the music to itunes, transferred it to the iphone and then had a bit more aggro because I didnt know ios keeps your music in "ipod" not "itunes". WTF is up with that?

With android you just copy and paste.

        • +1

Although I prefer Android generally because the OS is more flexible, if you choice is the Nexus 10 vs the IPad 4 I'd go IPad 4, based on the manufacturer chosen for the Nexus 10 (Samstung) and all those nasties around non-standard resolution and Google's indecision about having a common approach to the Nexus series (in non-tech speak it weakens the quality of apps developers will ultimately build for the nexus series if Google cannot match Apple in platform consistency). In terms of the manufacturer, Samsung or Samstung as we now refer to them, our experience has shown they have a hit/miss (often miss) approach to getting hardware right and when things go wrong the repair process often doesn't result in a happy result, plus they cannot develop decent firmware / or write stable drivers so we often see horrible bugs appearing only in the Samsung ROMs when testing new apps. They also won a Choice Mag Shonky award this year i believe. On the flip side the Nexus 7 is built by Asus, we've used these for development and apart from a handful of glitches they are reasonably good devices and I'm waiting myself for the 3G version, but if you want a 10 inch go IPad 4 or wait to see what Lenovo produces in their next batch of tablets (their last 10 inch was not half bad but generally not well known about).. plus there is always the Surface.. but a little early to tell how well its been built yet.

P.S. Yes I don't buy the iOS is friendlier, they are both horrible mobile operating systems desperately needed revamping, but I do find iOS it less painful if you are one of those people that installs apps like crazy. I've not used the surface yet, there was a good review on APC suggesting it Win8 RT demonstrates "why" iOS and Android need a major update. It's certainly worth trying to use all three and working out which is for you.

      • seeing as it's so easy for you, jonnois - here's my next question…

        Ford or Holden?

        • +2

          Thoughts/Recommendations?

jonnois was giving his personal recommendation. Elaborate? No. Helpful to tyronthis' specific circumstances? No. Answering tyronthis' question? Yes.

Of course it was 'so easy' for jonnois, he was just giving his preference, which was all that was asked. You're acting as if tyronthis were asking for a detailed analysis of his situation and a spec-by-spec comparison between the two tablets. Then, perhaps, your criticism would be valid. Of course an explanation of his recommendation would have been nice, but you can't have everything.

          And by the way: Ford.

        • Neither, they both suck.

        • -1

My Holden SSV does 0-100 in 5 secs. Fair chance that beats whatever you drive :)

        • -3

Nope. My GT does 3.7 0-100, 400m in 11.13 on street tyres. So yeah, my previous xr6t did a 10.3 on MT before it got kicked out of WSID for breaking the 10sec barrier.

        • +1

Haha, based on comments above, I completely rest my case.

          "but mines longer"

    • +1

Ok I had trouble with the same decision and I guarantee that the nexus 10 will drop down to $400 maybe even $350 but think! The specs are almost exactly the same bar a few pixels and load speeds.

Here's the deciding factor for me , In a year your ipad you buy now will still be worth almost $400 and if it breaks before that you can walk into any apple store and get a new one within minutes, then there's build quality and ease of use. I am a developer and prefer java to the O'C but the hardware is still not there yet!

      • +1

I guarantee that the nexus 10 will drop down to $400 maybe even $350

Can I borrow your crystal ball?

        • -2

every electronics go down in value mate. it will drop to zero in many years say 5.

        • Nah, except mac. Some old macs increase in values over time.

        • My problem with the above quote was that the he was 'guaranteeing' a price decrease. Sure, you can predict a price decrease, but unless you're the CEO of Google, or possess a crystal ball, you can guarantee no such thing.

It also seemed to me that seanludo was suggesting the 'guaranteed' price decrease would occur relatively soon. If he were implying otherwise, it would be completely irrelevant to tyronthis' current decision. It would be silly to expect such a thing, since the N10 is a premium, newly released tablet.

Follow the trend of the nexus 7 click price history on this page:
          http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/google-nexus-7-16gb/4014-312…

        • -1

My point here is that the price trend of the nexus series versus the apple tablets proves that you lose less money over time this is beneficial in the long run and if you can't see that then you are blind.

    • +1

amazing that the ipad is so much more price-competitive with equivalent android products than the ipad mini. Of course, the iphone is even worse. You can buy as much android phone at half the price.

I'm not an Apple fan but I could see myself at least potentially buying the ipad. Neither the mini or the iphone are worth their inflated prices. I wonder why Apple gouges on some things but not on others.

Although I suppose for most people they never see the true price of their phone because they buy it on a plan.

      • +1

The only android tablet that's remotely comparable feature wise is the nexus 10, to which they have no stock of the 32gb, at 469/569 + shipping its very comparable to the iPad wifi 539/649 shipping inc.

I've got both and the nexus 10 is better in most ways except battery life and native apps for the screen resolution.

        • Well, that was kind of my point. ipad prices are quite close to nexus 10 prices. The Ipad mini is more expensive than the nexus 7, for example, and the iphone is way more expensive than broadly equivalent android phones.

        • You stated the opposite. Nexus 10 is there to compete with ipad which has dominated the market for quite some time. What makes you think Google doesn't like charging premium like Apple does because they can't beat ipad or iphone. Google makes money on selling mobile ads so as long as people can hold one of their anroid devices, they can make money. Selling cheap and doable product (nexus 4 and 10) is what they have to offer. Google will be the obvious winner in Android echosystem because of aggressive pricing on the latest nexus series which will have huge impact on forthcoming Android mobile devices. Make no mistake, resale value wise the i-devices still hold up very well compare to other android devices because there will always be another new android device released every now and then.

That is for The New iPad and not iPad with Retina Display.

      • yup my bad.

you mean the The New iPad with retina display not The Newer iPad with retina display?

        • +2

          wat

        • Correct.. the new ipad is really the ipad 3 and the ipad with retina display is the ipad 4 which came out last month. A few differences like a better CPU and front facing camera

        • +1

What idiotic names. Why don't they just label them as iPad 3 & iPad 4?

        • They were probably worried about all the people that just brought the ipad 3 feeling ripped off with now an outdated tablet.

      • +2

what ipad are you talking about? this ipad in the deal is the latest and greatest A6 processor

        • -1

A6 remains the latest and the greatest until A7 comes out…

        • No the A6 is in the previous iPad. The new versions have A6X.

        • +3

A5X in previous 3rd gen iPad, A6 in iPhone 5, A6X in 4th gen iPad

        • -1

Correct, a6x is over double the performance of the a5x as well.

        • Correct but the A6 is a massive step up from the A5 not a small one.

  • Buying one at a Target store right now. Surprised not sold out yet.
