Take a bit of time for compatibles to come down. Only a few channels selling compatibles.
I got one at $269 about March and using it for duplex scanning. Still using Fuji Xerox M225DW for printing.
Note the duplex scanning the second side always comes upside down and need to manually flip for some reason I haven't been able to work out yet. Think I solved this one. Flip on long edge instead of short edge… maybe.
How long does it usually takes for generic toner to go down to a reasonable price
The toner company I spoke to thought they would have compatible toners around May 24. It was released earlier this year this machine.
I'd suspect it would be May 25 before we have reasonable toners.
Don't forget compatible toners would priorities printers with significant user base first because you need enough volume to mass produce to lower unit cost. They won't ramp up and keep warehouses of toners while printer sales catch up. Unless you are a business users the toner that came with it would probably last for like 12 months.
I bought one for the duplex scanning function and my Fuji Xerox 225dw is like 2018 with non duplex scanning (I need it for work). Will continue to print with the FX (toners are like $12 each) until it dies and use the Brother for scanning etc.

Had a similar model Brother that I got 2 years back, laser is the way to go. No colour unless you pay a lot more but black and white is all I need. Cheap generic toners, can't go wrong.
Colour laser is under 350 at Amazon atm.
Yeah true not bad, but then you need to get more toners etc, B&W is fine.
Thoughts on Ecotank Epson or laser color Not much printing really just occasional prints and photo’s. Duplex scanning though a must. Thanks
I have an old Fuji laser and ecotank. Laser is much better quality. While inkjets have improved, still not as sharp as laser.
Both are pretty cheap to run with generic toner/ink.
I have a Brother monon laser bought about 10 years ago MFC-9340CDW. Had no problems.
I buy the toner from Ink station. Works pretty well.
If you plan on using aftermarket toner, best to block the device from reaching internet so it cannot communicate with Brother servers. Aftermarket toner chips sometimes get blocked via firmware updates and you'll get a toner not detected error until you use a Brother branded toner with the corresponding chip.
You can keep it connected (i.e. for Uploading to Google Drive or Email) but turn off Automatic firmware updates. Kept my Brother MFC like that for years. I also buy my toner from Inkstation.

I have it set on manual updates. Have been ignoring updates. Unless there is good reason to update I won't be doing so.
