Brass Monkey 25L Portable Fridge/Freezer $199 + $25 Delivery ($0 C&C/ In-Store) @ Jaycar

620

A really great 12v/240v (comes with both) fridge/freezer. Controllable via display or Bluetooth app.

I’ve owned one of these for the past 2years and it’s been fantastic. I paid $350 and still think it’s great value.

The Bluetooth is really handy, when connected to the car I normally run it high power mode and get it really cool. Then once at camp site turn it way down onto eco mode.

Input Power: 12V DC, 3.75A | 24V DC, 1.875A | 45W
Power Consumption: 0.25kw.h/24hr | Current Draw 1.875A−3.75A

You can run this in your house?

    • +3

Yes comes with 240v too. eBay may be cheaper for delivery https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256638580632

Just tried the code - SEPSNS on EBay now and got $10 off

    • +3

Yes, mine lives it's life as the dog's food freezer until we finally go away somewhere. Hasn't skipped a beat.

      • Oh how perfect. How many days worth of food can you Store

        • Just checked and i have the 15L version. Internal dimensions are approx 35L x 25W x 18H.
Good for about a ten satchels of 600g dog food.

    • +3

have the 15l version and when my fridge died i was using it for 2 weeks off a variable power supply to keep milk and a few essentials cool until i could get another fridge. Bought the 15l so i could keep things cool in the car when shopping in summer. The 25l is tempting and it comes with the mains adapter.

      • There is an extension lid that adds 5ltr capacity. In case you don’t want to spend more.

      • +1

240 to 12 adapters are $20 on ebay.

Slightly different but I had an Engel fridge that ran pretty much constantly at home and when camping for over 15 years. It was only ever turned off for cleaning. I only got rid of it when the compressor packed up and it was going to cost close to $700 to replace.

      • +1

        The older Engels are legendary!

    • I have one yes u plug in put in car it really good for put lunch in

My parents bought a larger one of this brand last year (a model with split sections for fridge or freezer operation in either, plus a retractable handle and wheels) and did a road trip down the east coast. It was absolutely brilliant, and my next car fridge will absolutely be Brass Monkey (currently using a small Waeco which is fine for its size, but I’ll need something bigger soon)

    • +1

Realistically what can you put in the 25l one? or what size would you recommend?

Putting together an old station wagon with a bed in the back, and a mini gas stove and all thats really missing is a fridge/freezer for me food. I'm by myself so it only has to feed one person for say 3-4 days.

      • So my mistake, my Waeco is only 14L making this 25L one a great size… I might be pulling the trigger sooner rather than later aha

So based on the style of the one my parents have and I used with them while they were visiting, I’m assuming this has a straight cavity for storage and not a “shelf” with part of the compressor underneath like my Waeco. I can fit a 3L milk bottle on its side, above the “shelf” in mine, whereas this should hold 3 or 4 bottles upright. Mine can hold 12 beer bottles, with a small space for something else, so assume about a slabs worth of space and some change in this?

Got one but the 60l one few days ago. Checked usage as going camping and wanna check. Used 0.75Kwh/24h. Had fridge 4 freezer -20 for 12h. Then -16 on both. Opened on occasion. It was empty. Should last me 24h with 100ah battery I got from last week's deal. Got 100w solar blanket so see if enough to keep going a few days with fridge/freezer option

  • Does this one fit in a model tesla y in the trunk well (under trunk)?

    • +1

I don’t think so, refer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14407420/redir shame this smaller model isn’t as good a deal

    • +3

Yesit fits perfectly, I have this exact model in the sub trunk.
Got it for $169 in a previous sale though.

      • When you say this exact model, you mean the 25 lt from listing, or 15 lt mentioned in above comment?

          • @unco: Nice photo's ( is this a New OzBargain photo link feature?)

Just to get a perspective of boot, what model vehicle is this?

Does the boot lid close on top of this fridge?

            • +3

@ozhunter68: Go to My Account -> Files and you can upload your own. Think it's been around for quite a while, my earliest file is 2013 haha.

It's a Model Y, this fridge fits in the subtrunk and the subtrunk cover goes back on top without an issue so I have the entire boot space free to use still.
I have some wooden blocks to raise the subtrunk cover for ventilation if needed.

              • +2

                @unco: Nice,….nice,…….and very nice haha!

Thanks for responding to my genuine questions.

              • @unco: What’s your strategy to keep it running when the car is asleep? Just keep sentry mode on?

                • @n1ck: Yep sentry mode to keep it running when I'm anywhere away from home.

I have the Viofo A139 Pro too so sentry mode keeps that powered on when I'm parked anywhere (got the Viofo for actually being able to read numberplates compared to the inbuilt Tesla cameras, it's truly night and day with the 4K recordings).

Most of the time the fridge stays in the boot but powered off. I like that you can keep it plugged in and asleep until you need it, then I just turn it on via the mobile app or physical button the fridge. If the car goes to sleep and turns off the 12v power, the next time you wake the car, the fridge will stay in it's last known state which is handy.

      • same here it good black Friday in few months time

  • Has anyone got experience with the KINGs brand for portable fridge/freezer?

    • My 75 works fine, lids came back to front for the cover, if u buy split zone ask em to ensure right way around so u don't need a video lol

  • +5

Word of warning. I have this fridge. It works but it has extremely poor insulation. The outside of the metal case gets so cold it can condensate water.

As a result this fridge is very inefficient and struggles to maintain the cold. If the power goes out you can quickly kiss your groceries goodbye.

    • Can you buy an insulation cover?

    • It shouldn't do that all year round, only on really hot humid days at least above 30 C +-

Maybe there is a problem with your unit, or it did not have enough space around sides for ventilation?

If anyone who has this or similar model can tune in with comment regarding this, would be good for others.

    • I have this exact 25L model and mine doesn't do that at all. Zero condensation on outside of the unit when in the car on 12v or in the house on 240v, with fridge or freezer temps.

I will say though, the compressor is a lot louder than my Waeco/Dometic and my 100L XTM fridge and it doesn't hold temp as well as them. But it's small and cheap

Got one of these in the truck cab as an armrest.

Was worried how it would suit, being a real compressor, but it was a gentle vibration (easily out vibed by the diesel engine).

And quieter than the AC anything above speed 1.

All in all, very suitable, very happy.

1000x better than a cheap peltier cooler in lots of $99 'mini fridges'

    • +1

Do you find the insualtiin lacking like what tanksinatra commented? I was thinking of using one as a fridge whilst driving and as an esky/cooler with techni ice when I arrive at my unpowered camping shed.

      • +1

I can't say I've noticed a problem as such; but mine is used while driving, and the old habits in me always drop an ice-pack in there.
It does get cool externally though; so it would make sense that the insulation isn't wonderful; but it's 'fine' when the truck is running anyway.
I don't typically take things that will spoil easily.

The 9L version of this my father has doesn't get cold to to the touch, and stays 'very cool' internally overnight (cold would be overstating it).

Considering an esky and a bag of ice can stay frozen for multiple days; I'm not sure I'd be using these for many days at an unpowered location.

        • Thanks, guess I’ll have to start looking for a solar set up soon so I can power a fridge.

          • +1

@mapax: Compressors off solar are also a painful thing to run.

            Look into lpg.

100 litre LPG gas fridge uses around a 1/3kg per 24 hours.

Means an 8.5kg bbq gas bottle will last you three weeks.

            • @MasterScythe: I do actually have a large old LPG fridge but could never get it to work right. I’ll have to do some digging around to see what the issue was and see if I can get it working.

  • So how long can this run at the campsite on just a normal 4wd car battery?

Worth getting the cover for $99?
    https://www.jaycar.com.au/grey-insulated-cover-for-25l-brass…

    • Personally, not a fan of the covers, unless you need to have the fridge working in full sun, such as the back

of a ute or next to tent etc. Some reviews don't show much extra efficiency, and if air/cooling vents are restricted,

might even be worse. Annoying to constantly open one or two flaps to get access to fridge. If one of those hot

and humid days, good to wipe condensation off sides, but cover would make this hard, and unless constantly

removing to dry out the cover and fridge could get mould stains more easily etc.

      • You shouldn't get condensation in the sides of the fridge if the cover works. If it is condensing then the cover is doing nothing and might as well go in the bin.

    • I had my run for 6 months most a 14 below and rest at drink and food cold as i want to test going to keep drugs cold all the time

  • How heavy is this unit?

    https://www.jaycar.com.au/fridges-freezers/12-24-volt-fridge…

    • I got the 60l few days ago. Think was $320.

  • Thanks OP, bought 1

  • +3

Have had this running as a mini freezer constantly for three years - hasn't missed a beat. Also very quiet.
As for condensation yes, there is some in the hottest part of summer but not for the rest of the year.
I have mine set at -18c so that's about 50c less than ambient.
One point, the door seals that they come with are not awesome, so adding some stick on rubber or silicone strips will help a lot

    • +1

Sounds like you are using this inside your home (mostly) for 3 years, which is a bit different to using it in

a hot vehicle which can get to 40 C + in summer. That would explain for less condensation, but many

portable fridges will condensate in really hot and humid conditions, just the nature of the beast.

My Brass Monkey I am using 24/7 also has some seal condensation/moisture build up, was not worried

about it as have plenty of power to keep running it, but maybe a good thing to do before heading off to Northern

W.A. next year. What kind of rubber or silicone strips did you use for that?

      • Yes just using it as a mini freezer. As for extra seals, just clear stick on silicon strips.
The factory door seal barely seals at all so a bit extra is required.

      • @ozhunter68

My Brass Monkey I am using 24/7

What is your setup to achieve this? Thanks.

        • I have converted a Toyota Hiace Commuter into a camper and travel and live in that full time.

  • We typically keep a small insulated picnic hamper with ice in front of the passenger seat on our road trips. Would this be a good fit for that space?

    • +4

Click on the link, look at the dimensions, or just do some googling you goose. Easy to find it out. No one knows the dimensions of the space you're trying to fit this thing in to.

      • Although your response was a little blunt and lacking politeness, you're spot on lol!

  • +4

I bought this a few years ago. Intended to use for week long remote camping in sunny northern nsw, powered with 100ah battery and 100w solar panel. Its not enough. This thing does not have much insulation at alll its foam. So uses a lot of power.

Its good for shorter trips and also to throw in back of car for day trip to like buy meat for example. For camping I will need more solar panels. NOt too bad for first one, but I am looking for better plastic ones now.

    • Did you end up finding a better one?
Was contemplating a brass monkey but was concerned about the temp retention

  • +3

I have a different size Brass Monkey fridge and an Evakool, not complaining about it due to the price difference, but the Brass Monkey fan is WAY louder then the Evakool. Worth considering for people where noise might be an issue.

    • Good point, but for this to really be relavent we need to know both model numbers as we all know

that various models as well as brands Can/Do Vary.

  • This model includes lithium ion batteries (as in video ad) or batteries sold separately? Thanks.

    • +1

      No

    • I think for just about all the brass monkey fridges you have to buy the battery separately at the exorbitant prices they charge for the batteries.

  • For any Tesla owners, this fridge fits in the underfloor space in the boot ;)

  • Ordered and paid for a fridge on Wednesday evening click and collect. Received a call Thursday saying they have no stock and to contact support for refund. Online support tells me to contact store for refund… Received a “ready for collection email” on Friday.. what is going on?!

  • Got this one just now for $280:
    https://www.jaycar.com.au/30l-brass-monkey-portable-fridge-f…

Size is very slightly bigger but no metal frame. In the store it felt better than very chilled metal frame from outside.
