Beat me to posting the deal by a few seconds!

    • +2

Sorry! I don't normally bother but I was surprised that no one posted this one at 5pm on the dot.

  • Anyone know if these can be used for international transactions?

    • +2

      Per the cardholder agreement:

2.5% of the transaction value applies when you make a transaction on your Card in a currency other than Australian dollars (AUD) or you make a transaction on your Card in any currency (including AUD) that is processed by a card scheme or billed by the merchant outside of Australia

  • +8

Another way to look at it is it 3.41% discount for $500 gc?

    • +11

A 3.41% discount isn't worth the effort IMO

      • +2

Yes and no! Worth every Qantas point. Also helped save a lot of transaction cost. Eg DEFT 1.4% vs 0.4 on prepaid cards.

Also ATO, usually you can't get any rewards on govt transactions.

Different use case, worth for some, effort for others.

        • -1

If DEFT is 1.4% and prepaid cards is 0.4%, then how is DEFT saving on transaction cost?

      • +1

I use my AMEX to buy them to meet the minimum spend for bonus points (4k in first 3 months), and this allows me to use my AMEX at places where AMEX isnt accepted since i bought the gift cards with it.

Also these cards let me get 2 points per dollar (Through AMEX) for rego and stuff which only takes an extra 5 mins to get to ServiceNSW (I rego 3 cars at the same time every year).

    • +2

Can also do split payments (under $100) with HSBC card for an extra 2%.

      • I think you can't buy a giftcard by split payments?

        • +2

You can, I've done it several times, Woolies it can be done at self-checkout easily, Coles only works for me without issue at manned checkouts (I always just go to front counter to do it at Coles).

    • Hi - newbie question here - what do you mean by 3.41% discount? Where/what is this a discount on?

      • +7

The rewards points based on a $500 load costs $507.95 but gives you spending power of $525. Therefore the cost per dollar value would be (507.95/525)*100. I get an overall discount of 3.2476%

        • Aha! Thanks

  • +1

    ATO?

    Edit: Looks like yes

    • Yes but be aware card payment fee applies for credit card payments.
      https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/paying-the-a…

      • +6

They are considered debit Mastercard and attract 0.2% fees. So, you will pay $1 as a fee for every $499 payment.

    • Does the ATO website allow payment with 2 different cards ie gift card and balance with credit card?

      • +20

The ATO website via myGov allows you to redeem a maximum of 5 payment cards every 12 hours, and you can do part-payments of any amount (starting from $1 + $0.01 payment processing fee). (You can redeem an additional 5 payment cards every 12 hours through Government EastPay.)

For example, if you need to pay $3,300 in taxes, you can redeem up to 5x $500 Vanilla Mastercard gift cards via myGov (making $499 payments from each gift card), then you can go to Government EasyPay and pay the remaining $805 owed.

        • +1

          Thanks WookieMonster

        • +2

Thank you for this! Considering this for ATO payments

        • +1

thanks for sharing this, I will definitely get some to pay ATO then

        • It's only allowed me to do 2 payments/day (or 24 hours) over the weekend?

          • +1

@Craze: Just make sure you keep your physical cards until the transaction/s have been processed. If you encounter any issues and you have thrown the card/s out than I think you would have a battle.

            • @Monkboo82: Thanks- yes I noticed the 4 payments made haven't been processed (weekend + it says may take up to 4 business days). Just used my last card up today and kept all cards (+ saved payment receipt) to confirm later this week.

        • Just purchased a gift card this morning and tried paying ATO's PAYG installment via the myGov website with the card for $499 but got an error. I did check MyBalanceNow website and can see there's $500 on the gift card. Do you think I have to wait 24 hrs before using the card to pay ATO…?

          • +1

@Alinnia: I just made a ~$220 payment from a Vanilla Mastercard gift card on the ATO website via myGov, so it appears to be working on my end. I did wait a couple of hours after purchasing the gift card before making the transaction though.

          • @Alinnia: I also got an error - then the balance says Transaction Declined on MyBalanceNow - did it end up working for you?

            • +1

@iChaseYou: Yes, I tried using the card last night and it worked.

  • +1

@VantageXL - is it from tomorrow or from 9th Oct per T&C

    • +1

It starts on Wednesday 9 October.

    • -2

top of the page says "in 2 days" haiyaaa

      • +1

In WA it says tomorrow at the top of the page because it's set to start at midnight AEDT, so 9pm for us.

        • I've turned on 'No Timezone Conversion' flag, so should be displaying correctly now.

  • Is this Vanilla Mastercard the one that is ok for DEFT?
The Vanilla visa from recent Coles deal does not on DEFT.

    • I have been paying deft on vanilla visa. No issues tbh.

      • Yeah wasn’t working for me when I tried it with Vanilla giftcards from Coles last week.

        • I will give it another try tonight. I have been using both Coles Mastercard and Vanilla Visa.

        • Confirmed - doesn't worn on DEFT anymore :'(

          • @abs898: Which one ? Coles Mastercard or Vanilla Visa ?

            • +2

              @bbqwer: Vanilla Visa

              Coles Mastercard worked

              • @abs898: Sorry noob question. What are the advantages of using DEFT payments?

                • +3

@ilovefullprice: Deft is a payment intermediator, for instance my OC/Strata rates are via deft. You don't choose deft, deft chooses you

    • Sorry noob question. What are the advantages of using DEFT payments?

    • +1

Just used this card today to pay strata bill via Deft and payment went through successfully. (0.4% fee applies)

    • Can also confirm this card works with DEFT (0.4% fee)

  • Can't find in-store in Perth OMG

    • Yeah the last round was shocking with stock levels.

  • none in my local woolies left..

  • +1

Wonder if I could purchase these vanilla cards with the vanilla cards from Coles?

    • Short answer is no. But others can probably elaborate on this

      • Will there be an error on the system or not accepted by the staff?

        • +1

I would expect a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error to appear on the EFTPOS terminal as soon as you swipe a Vanilla Visa gift card on the EFTPOS terminal when you attempt to make a payment. If you trigger this error at a self checkout, the checkout will ask for the staff member to come over and dismiss the error message.

The reason I say this is two-fold:

          1. Woolworths enforces two levels of payment method restrictions on gift cards sold at their stores: regular restrictions (which appear to apply to most gift cards, including Apple gift cards, Ultimate gift cards and Uber gift cards), and increased restrictions (which appear to apply to gift cards such as Vanilla Mastercard gift cards, eBay gift cards and Everyday WISH gift cards). I say the Vanilla Mastercard gift cards has increased restrictions, because of comments such as this one.

          2. Vanilla Visa gift cards (regardless of whether they were purchased from Coles, Woolworths, The Reject Shop, etc) are a payment method that are caught up in these increased restrctions. For example, someone recently tried to use a Vanilla Visa gift card to pay for a TCN eftpos Luxury gift card at Woolworths, but the checkout rejected it.

You can see the known restrictions at Woolworths in this table.

You could always give it a go, but if I were you, I would brace for disappointment…

          • +2

            @WookieMonster: Thanks @WookieMonster

I did buy this weeks promotion at Woolies using the Vanilla Visa bought during the Coles promo.

It must have just been the first level of payment restriction!

  • +1

Not a single variable left in local Woolworths but plenty of $100 in stock!!

    • You just need to find where people have hidden them.

  • +1

Can you set a PIN and do they work at the same places as the Coles Prepaid MasterCards? Just wondering because the Vanilla Visa works at less places than the Coles MasterCard.

    • No pins for vanilla card,

      • +4

Vanilla Visa gift cards don't support PINs but Vanilla/Coles Mastercard gift cards do.

        From the cardholder agreement:

The use of a PIN with a physical Card is optional. However, should you choose to use a PIN with a Card, you can apply one when you first use the Card at a merchant’s POS device. Any four-digit code will work as the initial PIN for your first PIN-based transaction. After the first PIN-based transaction, you must use the same PIN for each subsequent PIN‑based transaction, unless and until you choose to reset the PIN.

  • +1

Limit 2 for variable cards per day per member.

  • Thank you - looking for a way to hit CC spend

  • any issues with getting dodgy ones like the coles mastercard?

    • +3

I have not heard any stories of tampered Vanilla Mastercard gift cards, but you absolutely should keep an eye out for tampering, because:

      • Vanilla Visa gift cards sold at Woolworths use the same style of packaging as Vanilla Mastercard gift cards sold at Woolworths, and someone during the last Vanilla Visa gift card at Woolworths reported a lot of gift cards at their store were tampered.

      • The newer Visa gift cards sold at Coles use the same style of packaging as Vanilla Mastercard gift cards and Vanilla Visa gift cards sold at Woolworths, and during the recent VIC/TAS deal at Coles, there was one report of tampering.

  • +1

Easy way to hit min spend on new credit card!

    Love these lickle deals

  • Does anyone know whether the 10% off per month (Woolworths insurance) applies to this?

    • It doesn't. You may still be prompted to use it but it won't work.

    • 10% off doesn't work on any gift card purchase

      • Some sim starters were excluded tho categorised as GCs.

      • Ta

    • +1

      😂 sorry Karen.

      • -2

Thats was meant to be a '-' not a '0'

Yeah, 3.41% discount is too low given the difficulty it will be in finding variable cards. If it was online, I would be up for it.

  • Is this still VIC/NSW only? Wonder if available in QLD.

    • +4

Since when has a gift card deal at Woolworths been restricted to VIC/NSW only? The only times in recent memory I recall Woolworths excluding some regions from their gift card deals was when TAS was excluded from gift card deals earning bonus Everyday Rewards points (and this was only before August 2020, because that was when Everyday Rewards was not available in TAS).

I can see this deal at the bottom of page 35 of the QLD catalogue, so it is safe to say this deal is available in QLD.

  • +3

Feels kind of pointless. Its a 3% discount and only if you get the full $500. Everything else even loses you money

  • +4

Would it be even less than 3.74% considering you spend the points at woolies and u can get woolies gc for 5% off?

  • +2

    20x points pls

  • -1

Can I use EFTPOS card I bought last week for this?

    • +2

Someone reported in June 2024 that they were unable to use a TCN eftpos gift card to pay for a Vanilla Mastercard gift card at Woolworths. You could always give it a go yourself to see whether it works, but if I were you, I would brace for disappointment…

  • +1

Didn't see any Variable load MCs in 5 different Woolworths sores in Sydney today….looks like this promo is going to be a fizzer for me. :( …unless they are restocking in time for Wed am!

  • Yep checked my local Woolies in Sydney and no variable cards on shelf

  • Wait so you buy the cards today and redeem them later for points?

    • Some people hide the cards today, so they are available for them on Wednesday.

      • Righttttt

  • Well I have 4K rates due next month. Be looking for some at my local on wednesday, thursday, friday…….. to save 32 bucks a visit. Worth it for me.

  • Issue is the availability. I've only seen 2x $100 of these on shelves on my last visits.

  • Checked multiple Woolies in Melbourne, no variable load Vanilla Mastercards on the shelves.

  • -2

Not worth the effort for 3.4% (if buying $500 cards). Don’t forget your time and the risk of hacked cards or mistakes. Don’t support these deals so we get more 10% (7.x% deals).

  • Any limitations using these cards? Can I use them to buy other gift cards?

    • +8

You can only use them to make purchases at merchants that choose to accept prepaid Mastercard gift cards.

Some examples to illustrate what I mean:

      • Any online merchants that require a payment card to support 3-D Secure support will reject this gift card, because prepaid gift cards - including Vanilla Mastercard gift cards - are unable to support 3-D Secure. (If you have been prompted by an online merchant to input a one-time password from your financial institution to authorise a transaction, that is what I am referring to.) Examples that come to mind include Everyday Pay on the Everyday Rewards app, as well as GCX.

      • Any merchant that rejects a prepaid card of any sort will reject Vanilla Mastercard gift cards, as they are classified by Mastercard as a prepaid card. An example of such a merchant is Cashrewards’ gift card portal.

      • Woolworths (and Woolworths Metro) will not allow you to use this gift card to purchase some gift cards sold at their physical stores (e.g. Everyday WISH, eBay, Vanilla Mastercard, Vanilla Visa). If you try this anyway, you should get a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error at the checkout.

      • Coles will not allow you to use this gift card to purchase a handful of gift cards sold at their physical stores (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift cards). If you try this anyway, you should get an Invalid Product Mix error at the checkout.

      • The Woolworths Group gift card portal will reject this gift card if you try to use it as a payment method via the Credit or Debit Card section. However, if you go to the PayPal Pay Now or Pay in 4 section and use PayPal (and use the Vanilla Mastercard gift card as a payment source, that should work. Same should apply to Prezzee and Giftz (as examples).

      • InComm (the gift card scheme owner) appears to have blocked Australia Post (both in-store and the online Post Billpay service) as a merchant for some reason. Australia Post sells gift cards in their physical stores, so this is a relevant point. (I know the linked comments are for Coles Mastercard gift cards, but Coles Mastercard gift cards and Vanilla Mastercard gift cards are essentially the same gift card with different branding.)

There are more examples (e.g. you officially cannot use this gift card at automated fuel dispensers, you officially cannot use this gift card for cash-equivalent transactions, you probably still cannot use this gift card on eBay Australia for some reason), but I think you get the point.
