Is it worth the hassle of upgrading to this from a 5700X?

    • +3

ignoring all other components - the 3d vcache will make a big difference for gaming, up to you if thats worth $200

    • If you have a high end graphics card (i.e. RTX 4080, 4080 Super, 4090) and have a 1080p gaming monitor, then yes (though technically, some games don't benefit much from 3D V-Cache).

      • I've got a 7800XT and my monitor is a 3440x1440 OLED.

        • +1

Can't find a 1440p comparison, but there is one for 1080p. 1440p difference would be smaller.

          Ryzen 7 5700X vs Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RX 7800XT | Test in 15 Games at 1080p

          • +1

@netsurfer: Thanks for that, got a 7800 XT and want to use for VR (closer to 4K), so likely not worth it

            • @abowen: How much can you sell your current 5700X for? If you intend to keep that PC for quite some time and you do game on that PC a lot, it might still be worthwhile (and stop you from keep thinking about it).

    • +4

Since you're this far into AM4, it's not worth it IMO. It's better to get an AM5 system instead of upgrading to a dead end from close to a dead end.
And I say this as a fellow 5700X user.

      • this video suggests otherwise
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3LeeEDWDPY

if your video card performance is being capped like the 4080 in this video then it absolutely makes sense to upgrade

at the end of the day you are look at FPS increase per $

so for $215, minus the resale of your 5700x ($140??) it's not only viable - but a complete no brainer!

on top of that it opens up scope for a GPU upgrade in the future as an upgrade with a 3d chip will now result in your GPU bottle necking performance unless it's a 4090

    • +1

Does depend on the type of games you play, mainly improves performance for CPU reliant games. This article shows a few comparisons between this and the 5700X

Probably get $150 for the 5700x on the used market. $70 upgrade ;)

      • exactly what i was thinking!

did so recently - Baldur's Gate 3 is much snappier and dota framerate has increased significantly. I'm happy.

@twig: You probably never visited Fluidtek. Eddie raved about his ability to get Logitech products at the lowest possible prices a lot. It felt like visiting computer nazi from time to time. It was often entertaining when I visited Fluidtek (quite a bit of drama in front of me while I waited). However, the queue was usually just too long. Most of us went to his store because he had the lowest price for the items we wanted and he knew that.

                  • +2

@netsurfer: I have, once. I did not enjoy the queue or his hospitality and never came back

Worth upgrading from a 3700x with 32gb of 3600MHz mem for gaming at 3440x1440?

    • You'll definitely see an improvement with the added cache in this. Particularly if games are currently stuttering with the 3700x.

      • Hmm i'm pretty tempted if it'll help me do a proper upgrade for an extra year or so!

        • +3

I pulled the trigger! Happy christmas to me.

          • @Polska Kielbasa: the 5000 series alone is a worthwhile upgrade for a 3700x…

and this will last you until AM6

            • @tephra: Hi mate, How about 3700x vs 5700x3d at 4k 240hz ?

              • @doichosach: your going to be more GPU bound in that scenario, but IMHO if you running 4k/240 then you probably have a 4080/4090 and so it makes no sense to have a 3700x in that situation, the 5700x3d will still help massively…

                • @tephra: Hi there, I have 3080 at the moment and waiting for RTX 5000 series. I just don't want to spend 1k for CPU , Mobo and Ram upgrade. I just bought the Dell 4k 240hz last month.

                  • +1

@doichosach: buy the 5700x3d, sell your 3700 over on forum.overclockers.com.au - probably get around $100 for it.

                    no brainer.

it will be a vastly better experience…

dont forget to update your BIOS

                    • @tephra: I haven't been to OCAU for quite a while as I used to buy stuff I didn't need, so I had to stop going to not waste money and to be able to save up for other things.
Are many people selling any 5800X3D CPUs at all there? I wonder how much difference is performance is between the two. I'll have to look at some reviews.
I also don't really want to update from AM4 yet as I'm running a 3900XT with an AMD 6900XT video card. I'd rather just upgrade the CPU and also upgrade RAM to at least 64GB, then with the money saved, take a look at the next lot of video cards to spend money on rather than buy a new MB, CPU, RAM and then still have to fork out for a graphics card on top of that. Would be too much that way.

With AM4, I'm also not sure whether or not to go with the 5900XT to have the extra cores. Not sure how big of a hit gaming wise the 5900XT would be, though. My monitor's resolution is 1440p at 165Hz.

                      • @Ice009: Don't know, I would assume that the 9800x3d is out, people will upgrade so used 5800x3d's will start to be seen.

Why 64GB of ram? That tells me your doing more than just gaming… If so then you need to work out what is more important.. gaming or productivity.. if gaming then 57/5800x3d is a good choice over the 5900XT…

    • 100%

especially if you have a decent GPU

1 - will increase raw FPS performance
2 - 3d cache renders your slow RAM meaningless, ie even more FPS boost
3 - opens up your platform to a GPU upgrade in the future as you'll now be GPU bound

how much are you paying for the upgrade? you'll get more than a $100 for your old CPU

the return FPS per dollar you are getting is insane for this upgrade, it is a COMPLETE NO BRAINER

i went from a 3600 w/ 6800xt to a 5800x3d, the difference in FPS was ridiculous, it's more than i've seen from upgrading my GPU to a new gen in past upgrades

right now my gpu is the bottleneck which means the next best FPS:$ upgrade for me will be a GPU upgrade, so this AM4 still has life for me, after i get something better than a 4090 gpu it will be time to upgrade from am4, thats YEARS away

  • +1

Pair with Cashrewards 10% Aliexpress cashback

  • Damn. I was wavering between getting this along with a RAM upgrade, or getting a 7800X3D (or 9800X3D once that releases in a week and looks worth it). The 5700X3D + RAM would work out at less than half the price of the 7800X3D upgrade at current normal prices.
This deal makes the 5700X3D much more tempting but I'm not sure if I want to upgrade and stay in AM4.

    • +6

If you currently have an AM4 platform PC setup, it is a low risk upgrade (because of the price). If for some reason you decided to go for 7800X3D or 9800X3D later on, you can simply sell the CPU and will most likely get majority of the money back.

      • Cheers. Was kinda my train of thought as well. Bought the CPU now, hopefully a happy camper once it arrives.

    • +2

I'm still rocking a 3600. The PC builder in me wants to upgrade.. but the gamer in me and the games that I play run perfectly fine as they are… I'm sure that with an upgrade, I'll see better frame rates and stuff, but honestly, I don't feel like my current setup is gimped or anything. Ahh, the pursuit of better numbers vs the idea of good enough.

30 years ago, it was just so much clearer. Upgrades would allow me to play previously unplayable software. Now upgrades just make the same game that I'm already playing, a bit shinier

      • +1

Every time I'm upgrading, it's purely for Minecraft lol. I very rarely play newly released games.

  • Any cheap 78x3d or 98x3d? 👀

  • +1

Tried both codes at checkout, doesn't appear to do anything to the price, also not getting any error. What am I doing wrong?

    • New AliExpress user? It's possible the first order discount is applying and I don't think it stacks with coupons.

      • Yea, new user. I gave up on the coupon and just get it normal price but now getting an error and cannot proceed. Sadness.

        • The new user discount can get you some really low prices on a lot of stuff. If your USD price beats the one in the title then it has worked in your favour for this.

          • @Clear: Thanks, I tried following your method as per above. Still getting the same error:
"There's a problem with this order. Please try again without using an AliExpress coupon code or shop different items."

I've never been able to purchase anything since I created the account. Tried different shop, same error no matter what, I think my account is cursed.

            • +1

@monkeyjaja: New users can't apply coupon codes, as they get a "welcome discount" that can be small or big depending on the product. After the first order new accounts can use codes.

              • +2

@Clear: I'd happily remove the 'welcome discount' coupon just so I can proceed with the order but I can't seem to find a field for it. It's a bug I see other people in Reddit seems to have. One solution seems to buy something really cheap just to clear the welcome coupon, might try that.

    • I'm having the same issue but I'm not a new user, I've bought things from AliExpress in the past. Hmm…

      • Yea, super frustrating. I’ve confirmed my email address but I used an Apple hide my email account, if that makes a difference? I’ve been trying to use up their ‘Welcome deal’ the last 30 mins by buying cheap items so the coupon doesn’t conflict with each other and keep getting the same error. Using the iOS app and on the browser makes no difference.

        • I was on my PC before, so I decided to try on my phone and it's doing the exact same thing. I can't figure it out either.

          • @Phade: Using the app, I spoke with their agent who apparently escalated it and will fix it within an hour. Hope it works.

          • @Phade: I gave up and asked a mate that already has an account, went through at the ozb price. Won’t be able to claim during tax time coz invoice won’t be under my name but oh well.

      • I just did a test on my AliExpress account. I found it automatically applied the code for me without me entering it (I have not used either code on any other item yet). I tried manually enter the code again, the amount remains the same (because the code has already been applied). It also automatically applied my AliExpress coins to lower the total to $139.20 USD (~$213 AUD if you have a card that doesn't charge international fees).

      • Have the same exact issue, very weird as I have a couple of prior orders.

  • +1

    Got mine 212AUD Amex

  • +1

For security reasons your request can't currently be processed
when trying to apply coupon, i hope the country is safe after trying to apply my discount, should i be worried for everyone's safety?
    wtf lol

  • Doesn't PayPal introduce a 4% fee for all currency conversions?

    • +3

That's why OP indicated using a card without international fees and set AliExpress and PayPal to use USD (don't use PayPal to convert USD to AUD).

If you keep AliExpress in AUD, right now, the lowest price is $216.42 AUD (if you have some AliExpress coins you can use) or $218.86 AUD (if you don't have any AliExpress coins). However, that amount changes depending on USD to AUD exchange rate (since AliExpress converts USD to AUD).

      • If using Paypal, how do you make Paypal pay in USD? Is there a setting within Paypal I can change? Wouldn't that still covert the current, though?

  • -4

to trust aliexpress.. i've heard of people getting scammed :(

  • I've got a 5600X. Is this an upgrade, or a sidegrade?

    • Upgrade mostly due to the cache .

    • If at 1080p, might be worth it. At 1440p+ probably not GPU depending. I'm in the same boat (5600x) and really I'm probably more likely to jump to the 7800x3d or 9800x3d next year. Pending sales and new boards etc

    • It's a small upgrade. I was in the same situation and got myself the 5700X3D, you should get roughly 10-12% improvement in fps, but it really depends on the game. Tarkov for example runs significantly better, and there's less stuttering.

Don't listen to the people who say it depends on your GPU, it doesn't — you can never get enough CPU power when it comes to gaming.

      • +1

        Kinda?

When your game can benefit from this chip, it benefits from it hard. Specific games can get up to 40% uplift from 3D Vcache.

But majority of the games are still GPU bound. Benchmarks often try to select variety of games that stress CPU as much as GPU, but chances are, you're not going to play rift breaker, far cry 6, or heck, even factorio and Microsoft flight Sim, the two poster child.

So I'd always say, focus on GPU. You'll know you need CPU when you need it, the community of your game will scream at you to buy it.

        • Do all those games you mentioned need a pretty beefy CPU?

          • @Ice009: Games can always benefit with more CPU or GPU. There's always a bottleneck.

Those games mentioned generally gets more benefit with a better CPU to make use of the GPU. Fight Sim especially, it's a huge bottleneck for it.

And keep in mind, sometimes, it's not just about a "better CPU." Minecraft, for example, are far better on a newer CPU than this one. But on flight Sim, this one is better than even the best new non-vcached amd CPU.

            • @Wonderfool: Thanks for the explanation. Didn't realize Minecraft works much better on newer CPUs, why is that? I've never played it. What makes it so intensive?

I should have also remembered that Microsoft Flight Sim is pretty intensive as I remember a workmate playing it a few years back and then he actually learned to fly a plane for real.

              • @Ice009: Because Minecraft is old and prefer single threaded processing. So that means that all the fancy new stuff like Vcache or multi cores doesn't help it. It just wants a fast CPU in the old fashioned way. And because it's a voxel game that needs to loads thousands of blocks in real time every step of the way, it's just so intensive.

  • +1

Need advice pls. Is it worth upgrading to this 5700X3D from 3600? Other info: GTX 2060 Super, 48GB-3200MHz RAM, 2 x 1440p monitors, mostly play CS:GO & black myth wukong.

    • +3

      From 3600 you'll see a massive improvement.

    • I was getting CPU throttled on everything with a 3600/6700xt and I just upgraded to a 7900GRE/5700x3d, I'm barely ever CPU throttled now and it performs really well.
It'll make a big difference but then your GPU might hold you back a bit

    • I went from a 3600 to the 5700X (non-3D) and the difference was insane. Definitely worth the upgrade

    • It will help a bit in csgo (though basically the 5600 will help almost as much).

You'll be heavily bottlenecked by gpu in wukong.

I will consider getting a GPU before getting this.

    • Just did this pairing it with my 4070. Would recommend

    • Thank you all. Decided to pull the trigger!

    Where my fellow am4 fam?

Worth upgrading to this from 1700x (yes) or skip to am5? All my gear is old, running a GTX 970, classic.

    • I wouldn't even hesitate! I went from a 1700x straight to a 5700x about a year ago? and if the X3D was available for this cheap when i did it i would have jumped on it.

I guess it depends on if you're planning on a full system upgrade anytime soon or you're happy to get another year or two out of am4.

Wow just noticed the 970, maybe just get a full upgrade when you're ready….

    • -1

If it is more than just for gaming, then it is worth considering. If you are using AMD stock Wraith Prism cooler and never re-applied thermal paste, before changing the CPU, make sure you run your PC for a while so the CPU heats up a bit, making it easier to remove the cooler.

For mostly gaming, in your case, might not be as clear cut. GTX 970 has 4GB VRAM (and that will become the main bottleneck if you just upgrade the CPU). I recently bought a second hand RX 6600 for $199 (I think the market price is even cheaper now) to replace my oldest / slowest PC's GPU (which had a RX570 4GB VRAM graphics card).

If you have a 8GB+ VRAM GPU, then I would definitely recommend the upgrade. Not saying get a second hand RX 6600 instead, but I think a brand new setup is better if it is for gaming in your case. However, there is also the option of a cost effective GPU upgrade + this CPU (5700X3D), which is also a good option.

At the end of the day, you know your situation best. Also, as I mentioned in another comment above, this CPU is a low risk upgrade at this price (due to its high resale value). Even if it is a stop gap upgrade, you can easily sell it later on and get most of the money back.

    • If you're able to keep using the 1700x for so long until now, no need to jump to am5.

Infact, with your upgrade cycle, you're better off buying am5 when it gets phased out as well lol.

    • Windows 10 is EOL in a year, if you care about that then make sure your motherboard is supported by windows 11 before buying this CPU. Otherwise you'll have to do more upgrades to get security updates.

      • Hmmm I have a taichi x(?)370. I'll have to do some research, because I reckon I've tried to upgrade to 11 and something stopped it

    • If you're broadly happy with your system, it would be very hard to beat the value here by staying on AM4 - and grabbing a GPU upgrade!

AM5 is probably only worth it if you want a much higher end system with a 9800X3D or similar. To give you an idea, the 5700X3D is similar in performance to a 9600 and is obviously a cheaper upgrade.

      • I have plenty to upgrade. I need a new GPU, my hard drives are probably close to 10 years old. After a comment above, I'm not sure if my taichi x370 which I've got a feeling is the hardware stopping me upgrading to w11

        • You can either add a TPM 2.0 module to your motherboard if supported, or install W11 bypassing the TPM requirement.

Or use a different OS which doesn't attempt to force hardware requirements on users

But if you think it's time for a whole new system, fair enough.

          • @snep: How do you find out if your MB has a TPM 2.0 module without trying to upgrade to Windows 11?

  • Took the plunge

Thermalright Peerless Assassin or Phantom Spirit, whichever is cheaper they're 99% similar and perform the same.

My 5600X was running at 95C under loan with the stock wraith stealth cooler. Upgraded to the Phantom Spirit, brought it down to 70C under load. My room just runs hot.
