[Used] Dell UltraSharp U3419W 34" UWQHD IPS 60Hz Curved Monitor (No Stand) 3-Month Warranty $199 + Del / $0 MEL C&C @ BPC Tech

1420

Ridiculous value for a monitor with these specs, even with no stand and shipping costs - paid $38 for StarTrack to Brisbane area, so $237 total, ordered Sunday arrived today.

Should go without saying it's not an ideal monitor for gaming, but honestly it would be plenty enjoyable for many titles imo (just not competitive shooters etc).

The screen was well packed and works perfectly, has a great picture and there were no scratches or dead pixels on my unit.

Specs:

Size & Resolution: 34-inch, UltraWide, 3440 x 1440 (WQHD)
Aspect Ratio: 21:9
Panel Type: IPS
Colour Coverage: 99% sRGB
Brightness: 300 cd/m²
Ports: USB-C (with power delivery up to 90W), HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, audio out
Refresh Rate: 60Hz
Features: Built-in KVM switch, Picture-by-Picture, Picture-in-Picture
Weight: 8.2kg without stand

Pros:

  • good bit newer than popular U3415W from recent deals
  • decent brightness at 300 cd/m²
  • USB-C with solid power delivery at 90W
  • USB hub and KVM switch
  • excellent overall value

Cons:

  • 60Hz peasantry
  • useless "fast" overdrive mode (visible overshoot like if mouse trails were enabled, just don't)

Before anyone has a sook about the "free shipping over $199" like on that last thread, it's a pretty heavy unit at 8.2kg (not incl. packaging) and the exclusion is clearly stated on BPC's shipping policy page.

Cheers for the mad bargain BPC, couldn't be happier.

How tf does it weigh that much?

    • Almost as much as my 50” TCL tv!

    • 2018 model. Older tech is always heavier.

    • +6

Somebody is clearly too young to remember CRTs.

      • It's not the 2000s anymore.

        • Somebody needs a leeetle bit more exercise if he needs to complain about an 8 kilo monitor that sits on a desk.

Even the cheapest F80 NB monitor arm that gets posted on OzBargain is specced to handle this monitor at 9kg (though personally I'd go up one just to play it safe)

        • It's literally two thousand and twenty four!

          (/s… Sort of)

    • i've noticed that curved monitors tend to weigh more than their flat screen counterparts.

i have no evidence, but I'm assuming it's got to do with the frame inside of the monitor needing to support more overhanging weight.

      • Not necessarily. I have a curved 27" Acer and it's only about 3 kg.

  • Is there any statutory warranty on used sold by a company like this?

Says 3 months warranty on the landing page

Looks like BPC learnt their lesson and don't have the "free shipping" tag this time.

Solid buy for the price, especially those wanting a single cord solution for laptops. Would also suit a new Mac Mini M4. Grabbed one, thanks Op!

    • +1

Quick PSA; the 90w power delivery falls short of what's required for many laptops (such as the recent Lenovo units shared on ozb) to not throttle down CPU wattage. It depends on the model so do your research, and you won't notice anything amiss for charging and connectivity, but if you're chasing performance you'll still need to plug in a higher output power source.

      • Thats really useful, thank you. I assumed laptops would just use battery and instead of say, 6 hours you might get 10hrs plugged in. I didn't realise they instead throttle. :/

  • +1

We use this at work and is perfect for having 3 apps on one screen, essentially 4 screens with the laptop screen.

Thought the title said "curved microwave". Now that's actually a great idea…

Yep - after going for the 3415W a few months ago I wish I'd waited for this instead.

        • U3425WE is already out.

  • Thanks op.

  • What is the year of manufacture please

    • 19 means 2019.
      Is 34" like 2* 27" ?
Does a standard DELL stand fit this, I've got a spare one..

      • 34” is 1.5 * 27”

        • At 1440p, a 34” 21:9 is actually 1.34 * a 27” 16:9.

          3440 / 2560 = 1.343

          • @bopter12: It's basically 2 * 24", I received it today.
Not sure what's the point comparing the total number of pixels when they don't have the same form factor ….

            • +2

@ShouldIBuyIt: I think you have misunderstood. They are not just comparing the pixels - they are explaining the size of the monitor relative to a 27" QHD (which is the same height and ppi as this monitor).

bopter12 was just correcting the math, because its not 21 vs 16 exactly (because "21:9" is not really 21:9, its a bunch of resolutions which are almost 21:9, and thus grouped together).

So the correct math would be 3440 vs 2560, not 21 vs 16 (which is not 1.5 anyway…but yeah).

(Even if you were wanting to know about sheer number of pixels, for the purposes of bandwith / processing power, 1.343x 27" QHD is a lot more accurate than 2x 24" FHD anyway!).

When it comes to ultrawides, it's conventional to talk with reference to the 16:9 with equivalent ppi & height (27" QHD in this case).

            • +1

              @ShouldIBuyIt:

              It’s basically 2 * 24”…

              Again, that’s not accurate.
Suggest taking a look at DisplayWars: https://www.displaywars.com/24-inch-16x9-vs-34-inch-21x9

              As you can see, it’s only 1.49 * 24”

Cheers @caprimulgus for the higher effort explanation 👍🏼

      • +1

That means the year the model was released, not the manufactured year.
The manufacture could range from 2019 through to 2021, U3421WE was the replacement.

What can be used as a stand with this?

  • I've got this Acer 28" 4k monitor:
    https://www.acer.com/gb-en/monitors/business/cb2/pdp/UM.PB2E…

But I need more screen real estate as my setup now only allows for one monitor plus laptop screen.

Would the monitor in this deal give me about the same vertical real estate or less, seeing that my old screen isn't ultra wide but it is 4k?

Used for coding, would like to have IDE on screen plus 2 other apps at the same time

    • +2

4K without scaling (100% scaling) has more desktop realestate (resolution) than this (WQHD). It has more pixels both vertically and horizontally.

(If you use 150% scaling on your 28" 4K, then this ultrawide will give you the exact same effective vertical resolution, but more effective horizontal resolution - so yes, this would give you more desktop realestate than your 4K at 150% scaling. But the 4K will be sharper, because the actual resolution is still higher.)

If you mean physical dimensions, this will be very slightly shorter, but much wider. It is the equivalent of a 27" QHD monitor stretched out by about 1.3x.

      • Thanks, yep I'm using the 4k monitor at 150% scaling. This is handy to know. Cheers

        • Im using 125pct scaling on 32"4k.. massive reql estate love it

    • Price ?

  • would this okay to pair with flat 32" 4K ? i feel the setup would be weird as this one is curved, it cant be on the side.
but the 32" would be too much as a side monitor..
    oh well…199 saved

    • I used a 32" 4K as a side monitor to a 34" ultrawide like this, with the 32" 4K on an arm so i could rotate freely between portrait and landscape.

I found it to be a great setup for me personally - very flexible, and "best of both worlds", in a way.

Only changed from it because i replaced the 34" with a 40" 5K2K (which is even more awesome, obviously!).

      • Whats your 32inch 4k. Ive been looking for 1 for cheap / sale

        • I have Dell S3221QS - it was the best option for me at the time, but there are other better/cheaper ones around now.

        • the famous Phillips one that pops up on ozb often. yo ushould check ozb more often…

      • @caprimulgus im looking at my 32" now and imagining it on the side is….. feel like overkill really …… im working with lots spreadsheet pdf and docs but still….
yeah all monitors would be on arm

        • Portrait 32" is certainly a tall screen! But quite nice to splitscreen vertically, giving two 2160x1920 (or three 2160x1280) workspaces, or a more natural feeling fullscreen page for word documents.

Overkill? Sure! But I found it nice to use! :)

You don't need to use it in portrait though - you could just use 34" ultrawide and 32" 4K (both in landscape) side-by-side, for the flexibility of two differently shaped (and different ppi) workspaces. Just depends if you would find value in that, with your usage.

          • @caprimulgus: Thanks. But if we have ultrawide screen as main, would it means we will have to look further to the sode monitor, therefore straining out neck more? Thats my concern. Also the 32 on the side will looks bigger (thus weird) than the main, i guess.

Edit. No they are very similar in shape.
            https://www.displaywars.com/32-inch-16x9-vs-34-inch-21x9

            • @CyberMurning: They may look similar on displaywars, but trust me, they are completely different. When you start split-screening into different screen segments, the resulting segments look and feel very different at different aspect ratios. YMMV.

              • @caprimulgus: i just thought of another issue. right now i cant share my 32"4k on teams app as other workmates are using fhd monitors or even 14" laptop (they complained cant see anything, too small). so only share my laptop screen but that is too small for me to work (while sharing).
on your 34" wide, can you share just half of the screen for example? im afraid it will be still too small on other people monitor or doesnt look right because different ratio

                • @CyberMurning: It depends what you are sharing: if you are sharing a single program that can be windowed, then you can set the window to be a smaller section of the screen (at or closer to 1920x1080, but doesnt have to be exact), and you just share the program.

This doesnt work for fullscreen applications or sharing a desktop (to switch between multiple programs), so if you need that, you'd need an alternative method. (I just use my 1080p laptop screen for that.)

Alternatively, you could probably use PBP mode (1720x1440), or set the monitor to a lower resolution while sharing. But that would obviously be a hassle.

So yes, there are ways to share screen better when using higher res monitors, but it depends what you are sharing.

My work laptop can handle 3 screens (total), so I am using my laptop screen as a third monitor. So this is not really an issue for me.

                  • @caprimulgus: " (I just use my 1080p laptop screen for that.)"
same but that will not work if i need to show people 2-3 things (for example excel word and pdf) - my work laptop is 14" :( and my eyes are old

so maybe best to get a second monitor with just 2K res at max. not curve. hmm maybe 27" and keep 32"4k as main

      • What’s the 40” monitor you’re using?

  • +2

Would a standard Dell monitor stand that comes out from a Dell ultrasharp monitor fit this?

    • +1

I'd say yes - had a stand from an S2721DGF laying around so used that for mine.

    • I had one spare stand from a 23" or 24" Dell screen and yes, it does fit. However, this screen is much heavier that what the original screen was, and therefore just goes to the bottom of the adjustment range and won't stay up. Having said that, I only now started wondering if there is a way to adjust the stiffness of the vertical adjustment mechanism?

  • 60Hz peasantry

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • I saw this multiple times and didn't bother posting it. Kogan have a similar monitor for $300 something. This is second hand, has high postage and is missing the stand. It didn't seem like that much of a deal

not going to crack 60fps at this res anyway

Had these all throughout our office during COVID. Fantastic monitors, but discovered a batch of these had power supply problems.

When the USB PD (we had 60w laptops at the time) and monitor power draw went up to a certain threshold (turn brightness up to 70%), the internal USB hub would flake/die and peripherals connected (mouse, keyboard, webcam, etc) would disconnect or behave erratically.

Bad batch turned out to be manufactured 2020 June/July. Would be wise to check this and then stress test the power supply within your 3 month warranty.

    • +1

      I have an 8.8kg 40" on an H100 and a 7.4kg 32" on an H80, both with the same 9kg rating.

The difference is that the pivot joint (where the monitor connects to the arm) on the H100 cant hold the 8.8kg monitor properly - it sags forwards (ever so slightly from my preferred position). I find the tilt on all NB arms to be pretty finicky, but at least the H80 with 7.4kg monitor can hold the position I set it at.

The H100 previously had a Kogan 34" on it, and it did hold the tilt. But I forget how much that monitor weighs. (I think it was more than 7.4kg, but less than 8.8kg).

So yeah…an F80 may or may not hold this 8.2kg monitor fine. But you'd be pushing it, and it's possible that the tilt wont hold properly. Someome would have to try it.

And keep in mind that curved monitors will have a more forward centre of gravity, so you probably want to leave a bit more headroom under the weight rating anyway. (I don't think it's a massive deal for low curve monitors like this - but it's a massive deal for really large ultrawides that have curvature ratings under 1500, with lower number meaning higher curve.)

    • I've got mine on a F160 (dual arms)
1x 27" and the dell 3415W. It holds and hasn't moved for 2 months but it is definitely on the limit

  • The reason this is such a low price is that the ultrasharp market typically wants higher resolution than this display. And it is not suitable for the alternative gamer market as refresh rate is at @60

But I suppose for office app use it is pretty good (Usbc @90w and a decent dock in an 2019 monitor!) and cheaper than a P or S series Dell that market usually goes for .

    • I have one and find it quite acceptable for Flight Simulator 2020, which rarely gets above 40-50 fps anyway. The wide view is great.

  • Is this a better deal than the recent Samsung 32" monitor for $341?

    • You mean 34 inch fuc no, that is brand spanking new with webcam and 2024 model. This is crap dont get fooled. If you bought the other one congrats, i misseed the deal

  • Hey all, I currntly have 1 x 27 2k and 1 x 24 FHD. Would it be better to get another 27 2k or get this 34 wqhd? Is this essentially same as 2 x 27 2k? Its for work productivity only. No movie or gaming. I have no experience with big wqhd not sure if it's better. TIA

    • At home I have a 27" 4K and a 38" 3840 x 1600, at work I have a 27" 1080P (thanks for that IT, stupid buy that it was) and the older version of this Dell 34".

I could never go back to not having a wide screen. Get this 34" and pair it with your 27".

      • Not enough space. 27 + 24 is already almost desk edge to edge. I just remembered I need to screen share on Teams for presentation and training perhaps wqhd not great with that. I think I might get new 27 so will stick to 2 x 27" 2k.

        • What about 34" with portrait 27/24"? :)

Also, if you are using an asymmetric setup, with main 34", and 27" or 24" angled off the the side, it needs less desk width than directly side by side.

          • @caprimulgus: Hmmm, I never use portrait mode before and don't find the use of it. Also only the 24" FHD can be rotated as portrait mode. The 27" is fixed and no vesa mount. Main issue is I never use wqhd not sure if I will regret it. The reason am considering is because my desk is very small and am thinking to decluter, will 1 x 34 wqhd work better for my case. Plus the usb-c connector mean I can get rid of the docking station which is another item occupying the desk.Still thinking……

            • @psychoacid: portrait very useful when you long long document
with dock you can hide them under the desk (mount with double tape) and just run a cable out

              • @CyberMurning: My dock is the Dell with wireless mobile charger. :p
Maybe the desk is my problem…(first world problem; don't want to spend but want the best setup)

                • @psychoacid: 34" (single monitor) would be more of a side-grade to 2x 27". Neither is better really, just depends what is more important to you. Eg. 2x 27" would have a lot more desktop realestate, but 34" would give you the declutter and nicer/wider fullscreen (single screen) view.

But yes, upgrading desk would be my vote! :)

                • @psychoacid: better upgrade the desk than buying new bigger house?

        • Sharing screen on Teams with 34" can be an issue. I usually share the window, and resize the doc or whatever I am sharing. Well, that is if I don't share the smaller screen to fix the issue.
Otherwise, you can also use this to just share a specific section - https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9n4066w2r5q4?hl=en-US&gl=U…

          • @snuke: Discussed here

            • @ShouldIBuyIt: Yeah, I use Fancy Zones to resize, region to share lets you lock a specific area, and whatever goes into it is shared.

              • @snuke: Problem is, cant install anything on work laptop. Its locked tightly

                • @CyberMurning: Even from Windows store? Mine is locked down too, but that installed all fine.

                  • @snuke: when i click windows store it says blocked by it but when browsing or use direct link you gave above, it lets me download and install. weird :D

          • @snuke: Yeah I decided to get another 27 to match the current 27. I think 2 x 27 2k better suited to my work. Thanks all.

            • @psychoacid: yes if you happy with the 27 i think getting the same resolution is good. i stuck with this big 32"4K already haha but i love it now just trying to replace the crappy 22" HD+ that i have on the side.

          • @snuke: wow this david reviewer is exactly what i feel right now lol

This is effectively a 27" QHD stretched wider. It's not 2x, it's more like an extra third wider.

If you keep the 27" and run 34" + 27", they will match very nicely (same height and vertical resolution / ppi). But it will be asymmetric, not symmetric like 2x 27. I actually prefer an asymmetric setup personally, but YMMV.

I have 40" ultrawide + 32" 4K, which is effectively the upsized version of 34" ultrawide + 27" QHD. (Ie. Matched ppi pair of 21:9 & 16:9 with the same height and vertical resolution.)

      • +1

yeah matching res also kind of important i hate when moving things from 4K to FHD and the windows is all over the place
