You'd have to ask Plex that, but it's simple enough to resolve.
It’s… a server
Watch your content with VLC media player if your internet goes kaput
Currently using plex free and CPU decoding, no immediate plans on running more than one stream at a time so pass would be for a future enhancement, but i am interested to hear from anyone and their plexamp experience with pass?
Streaming service member - desktop app is just the mobile app. I typically use the normal Plex app as it is sufficient for my use case.
I've used it in the car a few times, more to test it out, and there have been no issues. The files are transcoded from FLAC to OPUS to go over the mobile network.
I'm half thinking of updating a certain set of stacks to get a few more audio-focused Linux Distros. Though, I hear this is a bit of a pain with tagging and people often run multiple apps - eg: download manager, tagging.
Any experience in the sonic features, i assumed it can create same playlists for similiar tracks from random other albums? Ya know, the spotify experience without the sub
Was waiting for this one. So thank you
Emby better
Why?
Plex has too much bloat. Emby works and is well maintained. Jellyfin although free is buggy and client support not as good.
I have both, I let my users decide. Most the users prefer emby.
Similar reason, less bloat, less technical issues, just my content
From an admin side I prefer emby aswell, can do more with it.
Thanks OP, been waiting for this to come up for the last few months. Now I can finally stream my HDR content on my non-HDR TV
nice, i was in turkey last time and it was cheap.
Is it still cheaper in turkey or other parts of the world? As I travel a bit… might be a better option than this.
If the higher upload speeds on fttp plans were cheap i would love this
Try living in an area where fibre isn’t available and the upgrade isn’t even on the list lol. 50k quote for an upgrade.
Still somewhat worth it in 2024, but not as much as in 2019.
The gap between JellyFin and Plex has narrowed a bit.
It will be at least 5-10 years before they get any of Plex's best features though, and we'll likely never see Jellyfin support a wide range of clients.
What are some of Plex's best features compared to Jellyfin? Genuinely curious because I use Jellyfin and want to know what I'm missing
Automatic no touch skip intro - Couldn't live without it
Automatic Skip Credits - Couldn't live without it
PlexAmp
Plex Photos
Wide range of app support across devices (Important if you share with friends/family)
Great UI
There is a lot more I'm sure others could list, but these ones are important to me. The other really important aspect is polish. Jellyfin and its features aren't polished anywhere near to what I would call "mainstream friendly" and likely never will be.
@samfisher5986: Additional few Plex points:
- Closed source
- Allowing a commercial company have direct access to your home network and media library. Analytics of what you have and play.
- A once-off lifetime pass is unsustainable for ongoing development, hence their track record of shoving opt-out bloat to monetise
@sssbp: I agree, but we are all free to leave Plex the minute its worse then Jellyfin.
The problem is Jellyfin development is so slow to the point that it will never catch up at this rate.
@samfisher5986: I agree, pros and cons for both. I'm just there are options for us to select based on our needs
@samfisher5986: The app support is disappointing but hopefully that gets better overtime.
The skip intro plugin works great on Jellyfin for skipping intros and credits, but you can't really use it on Android TV yet. I'm waiting for Findroid to officially released an Android TV app and then I'll be able to properly utilise it. Works great on the Findroid android app though.
I don't selfhost music so not necessary for me, but I have read about a lot of improvements in that space. Same for photos but I might explore Immich for that anyway.
I agree it's not as polished as Plex, but I've had no problems with it. However I also rely on Findroid and the Kodi Jellyfin plugin to watch content so I understand your point there. I think it's only going to get better though, I'm happy to be an early-ish adopter for it. I think development is speeding up a bit now.
Fyi I didn't neg you, only came back to this comment now. Thanks for the informative comment
@greater mimic: The app support is always going to be limited. They currently aren't even allowed to have an app on PS4/PS5.
I looked into skip intro/credits on Jellyfin… seems like its a very weak implementation that doesn't work that well.
It really depends if you are using it yourself or sharing with friends/family where you need more polish.
@samfisher5986: Nah it works well, just needs better client support. It'll get there. Dev work stalled for a bit but now in full swing
I share with some family and it works fine except for lack of client support
The skip intro plugin works great on Jellyfin for skipping intros and credits, but you can't really use it on Android TV yet.
It actually does work for android tv, just need to configure the plugin to auto skip.
@sssbp: Yeah I mean to show the actual skip button, not auto. I'm holding out for Findroid to officially release on ATV, thank god for community projects
@sssbp: Funny enough the Jellyfin team just dropped an update incorporating media segments into the ATV app
@greater mimic: Amazing mate, thank you
Looks like the intro skipper plugin takes full advantage of it too
Can someone please explain what we do with Plex pass? Watching movies?
Additional features - Hardware transcoding, skipping intros/credits, mobile apps, Plex amp and more.
For me the big reason was HDR tone mapping - almost all new releases are HDR and if watch on a non-HDR device without tone mapping the colours are all washed out.
Thank you. But where the content comes from everyone? :thinking-face
usually the high seas and ocassionally the content you already own.
Did you mean we d*wnload the content, and let a computer run the plex server (has to stay on) and then stream it from our TV? 😁
@beverleyrose: Bingo, invest in a micro/mini-pc. They consume very little power (upto 65w per hour). You can get a used one for anywhere between $100 to $250 depending on specs you desire.
Any recommendations on what server I should use this on?
Depends on your clients and how many streams at once, most clients these days shouldnt require transcoding.. a basic i5 or i7 tiny form factor that often go here would be fine, but that limits your hdd bay options .. but throw a gpu into a desktop FF and you got your self a winning combination.
I run Plex on a basic N100 machine which works fine for myself and a few friends. The key is that you get a chip with hardware decoding support for H265/H264 so it’s often better to have a lower spec modern chip than a high spec old chip that doesn’t have hardware decoding support.
Wish plex would restore my lifetime plex pass i purchased a couple of years ago. They refused even with the paypal receipt as proof.
Was enough to make me switch to emby.
how did you lose your lifetime plex account? I mean you just log into your account. If you don't know the password you just do forgot password? lol
Its a strange situation. Heres what happened.
I got a new phone logged into my only account and noticed that HW transcoding wasnt working anymore. Checked the plex pass status it wasnt "active" so tried the recovery option, which is essentially sending an email with your details etc.
They required more info so i sent them the paypal transaction. They claimed they have no record of the payment associated with my account. I have only ever had one plex account and two email addresses (I 100% knew the email i used but got support to check the other anyway)
It was september 2021 i paid $127.99 the deal is still listed here.
So im not sure what else i can do, plex support honestly werent much help, I obviously couldnt dispute it with paypal because of the length of time that has passed.
I prefer plex to emby but its pretty useless for hosting a server (with alot of high bitrate files) without h/w transcoding.
Give us more details? Wrong email address?
Tried both of my email addresses with support even though I knew which one i used.
I am in no way bagging plex either its superior to jellyfin and emby (which i use now).
But i cant bring myself to pay for it again when i know ive paid for it previously.
Maybe ill try again with support because i really would like to switch back.
Yeah, that sounds frustrating - would have been worth disputing closer to the time of the transaction.
I want to run a windows PC in my house 24/7 for streaming to (in-house) phones and TVs.
Is this the solution, or better off saving the money and using Jellyfin?
For in house, I wouldn't pay.
The key missing feature from Jellyfin is offline/download support. If your directly streaming within the same network Jellyfin will be fine.
Findroid (the best jellyfin client), can do this flawlessly
It’s like they knew i just received my DS423+ in the mail…
FFS! Literally bought this yesterday. Ffffark!
send their support a msg. Worth a shot
Yeh definately email their support just read a similar story on reddit with a happy ending.
A fan but the deal is not good enough to pull me in lol
I started using Plex just for indexing and serving files straight up to Infuse, because samba share was driving me crazy. Can do this with the free version of Plex btw.
Something that's not very well known I think is that Plex actively blocks your server if you're running it on a Hetzner instance, so if you're planning on running it on bare metal you rent through them, you're out of luck. Don't know if they have these restrictions for other providers.
Personally, Plex feels like they've been shoveling more and more of their own content into their clients, at times even "forgetting" how I've arranged my dashboards so that they're out of the way. Kind of rubs me the wrong way; if I'm hosting on my own machines and I've paid for lifetime use of the software, I'd really rather I have a choice on whether or not I get bombarded by what essentially feels like ads.
If you can get past that, Plex is pretty great. My setup's on Jellyfin now, but I sometimes wish it had the richness that Plex clients offered.
In general I would not be hosting Plex on cloud servers. Most cloud companies wouldn't let you if you told them.
I've paid for lifetime use of the software
Which is exactly why Plex need to shovel things into it, because they have expenses and you aren't giving them additional money.
You can still go back to an old Plex server version but everyone wants their updates.
It would be better that they charged everyone $5 a month, but gave us features we actually want.
Thanks I bought 30
Don't know why this marked as "expired" but the deal is still on - just signed up with 25% off
Just tried, too late
